@M5PerfHydros btw, I was recently given for free, an alraedy fabricated Dumas Atlas Van Lines 1/8 (wood). Very messy construction and paint. Also missing a few items. The hobby store owner was all happy to rid it out of his shop, and now I have an ugly yellow thing in my garage that I've become mildly obsessed with. Not sure if I can attach a photo here.
I used to run fast electrics until my back got so bad I could no longer launch and retrieve boats. So...back to my actual first love, R/C Aircraft. BUT!!! This is one of the BEST videos I have EVER watched. Everything is very clear and understandable and Scott...you are also very entertaining. Thanks! Best 1.5 hours I have watched in a very long time although I don't plan to go back to running boats!
Man how things have changed…lol, old school way back in the 70s, yup I’m that old, we would never let the thrust push on the engine, we had mini thrust bearings between the dog and strut, even later when the cable drives first came out we still pushed against the strut not the engine. Unless your system is only used on electrics?. Just found your channel and loved it, my son in his 40s has picked up the rc boat bug.
Oh ya, I did that myself in "the early days", and I'm still not convinced that a bearing at the strut isn't the best way to go. Although there's no good way to do that with the solid flex drive system, I think the lighter weight and higher rpm achieved with the solid drive is worth the trade-off. So many ways to slice a cat (and I've tried most of them!).
When I was racing unlimited nitro hydros used to run parallel drive back in the 80s with 2 u-joints and 3/16 music wire and 3/8 brass tube and in the tube had 3 B-3 needle bearings. Made for an ultra fast boat.
I was trying to install this in my 1/8th scale hydroplane, and it wasn't going at all like yours was going...I emailed Brent for help, and he got back to me right away and walked me through it..that was awesome.
I recognize those triangle boxes! Haha. I switched from coil to solid shaft in all my gas boats and immediately noticed a differences, especially on takeoff. When I pull the trigger on a coil drive, I could see and feel the delay of the drive windings up. When I tried a solid shaft for the first time.. the response was Instant 1:1. Never looked back. Boats got faster and more responsive and won a lot of races!

The best place to buy wood kits is MLBoatworks; mlboatworksrc.com/ Many good fiberglass boats and cowlings are also available from RC Boat Company; rcboatcompany.com/
Great video series Scott! I'm learning tons of stuff. After having installed and run the Byers wire drive do you have any comments or recommendations for improvements? Any particular troubling points of failure? I'm just looking over an ML Boatworks 1/10 scale electric kit and am considering the wire drive.
Whatever you do, never run a cable again, especially in the electrics. The Electro Eliminator is still running the same drive with zero failures and super fast!
OK, if I understand correctly there's a little hole in the outer brass tube (that is glued in) to hold the other brass stuffing tube with the solder through a tiny hole ? I'm not sure what I'm looking at (it's so tiny). Can you confirm ? Thanks! P.S. I've learned a lot !

I'm building a sport 20 electric hydro and the water we run in is brackish (Not so easy to find a good freshwater place to run in Hawaii). Would you recommend this shaft for my use or should I stay with a flex cable?
@@M5PerfHydros Thanks! Another question...I noticed you use oil with this wire drive, on our current boats we use marine grease instead of oil because of the corrosion from the brackish water. Would I still want to use grease with this or use oil?
In a previous video you were going to increase the motor water jacket inlet and outlet nipples. Did you ever do that ? It looks like they are the same original size.
great video. i watched it the day you posted it. i also tried to send Brent an e mail with no response to date. i am just wondering had you checked with Brent before dropping his info on the video to see if he is up to taking on new customers?
Yes Brent was aware I would be sharing his email. I contacted him after receiving your message and he tells me that my video has caused quite a stir and he's a bit overloaded with messages. He's working through them all so I expect you'll hear back from him soon. If not, please shoot him another email as he may have missed some along the way!
Hey Scott I’ve really been enjoying your videos lately, I just bought my first nitro hydro after ten years of flying rc helicopters and jets. I’m excited to get out on the water and plan on building an outrigger while the ice is covering up the lakes up here in Maine, I have two quick questions, it’s perfectly fine to just run 2 stroke klotz oil on my shaft instead of marine grease? Is that what u do ? Which I’m hoping so because my other hobbie is dirt biking so I have all kinds of klotz! And last quick question, do u happen to have any fast used boats or hulls for sale? I’m also on all the forums too but please if u have one you’d like to sell, I’d love the chance to own such well taking care of boat, nitro or electric. If you happen to I can send my email and send pixs etc. thanks scott, From Scott!
Hi Scott (cool name by the way), I do use grease on the cable. Old fashioned I know, but there it is. I have considered using some sort of oil, and klotz would be good as any I should think. What I would never do is add an oiling cup like I see in a lot of boats. Adding the unnecessary weight would make my head explode!
Oh and second part... No boats for sale currently, but stay tuned. I'll probably sell two at the end of this season to make room for new. Find me on Facebook and you'll see them listed eventually
I've converted my boats to a solid flex drive system and don't use cables anymore, but you can get them from a number of sources. A couple I prefer are Rattlesnake RC and Zippkits. www.allrc1.com and www.zippkits.com
Mine or guy who makes the solid flex drive? How about both to be sure.. Mine is scott.meyers24@gmail.com, Brent's (wire drive) is bbyers@altamotive.com
ruclips.net/user/shortsFXI-K7E4sbg?feature=share here is my running video with the solid flex shaft. Not the best but was on the river with low visibility.

That's a question for the builder of the flex drive system, Brent Byers. You can reach him here; bbyers@altamotive.com
great video. i watched it the day you posted it. i also tried to
send Brent an e mail with no response to date. i am just wondering
had you checked with Brent before dropping his info on the video to
see if he is up to taking on new customers?
Yes Brent was aware I would be sharing his email. I contacted him after receiving your message and he tells me that my video has caused quite a stir and he's a bit overloaded with messages. He's working through them all so I expect you'll hear back from him soon. If not, please shoot him another email as he may have missed some along the way!
@@M5PerfHydros Thanks much appreciated
I have gotten through the back log of emails, but I didn't see one from you. What's your email address?
Scott where can I get an alignment tool like you use?
I made it myself, but you can get a similar tool from Brent Byers here; Brent Byers
Hi Scott (cool name by the way),
I do use grease on the cable.
Is a solid flex drive viable in a 40xx 1000kv 8s 36" catamaran ? Sorry if this is a dumb question. lol
Heck I dunno... That's a good question for the developer! Get him here; bbyers@altamotive.com
@@M5PerfHydros lol, Thanks for the honest reply.
@@M5PerfHydros Do you have a good link or e-mail for him?
Yup bbyers@altamotive.com
What kind of oil you using there?
To lube the shaft and strut? I just used two stroke oil, same as premix for gas motors
@@M5PerfHydros I'm wondering if using marvel mystery oil would be ok?
Too thin I think
Who sells the alignment tool
bbyers@altamotive.com
Chris from Az/ tried to contact Brent by your email address and haven't heard back in a week. What do I need to give him to move forward?
What address did you use?
Received a reply back from Brent / my fault / spam / now I can move forward.
Where do you get your flex cable
I've converted my boats to a solid flex drive system and don't use cables anymore, but you can get them from a number of sources. A couple I prefer are Rattlesnake RC and Zippkits.
www.allrc1.com and www.zippkits.com
@@M5PerfHydros I assumed you made your own considering you modified everything
Right? I've thought about it, but when I find someone building a thing exactly as I would or even better, I like to support them and buy it from them
@@M5PerfHydros talked with Jeff wohlts about them almost set one of mine up with the wire but......
What is the dia. of the wire .000???
Huh... I dunno, never measured it. Doesn't look like .125", maybe .100", but I'm using memory only since everything is packed away due to our move
@@M5PerfHydros can you send me the email address
Mine or guy who makes the solid flex drive? How about both to be sure.. Mine is scott.meyers24@gmail.com, Brent's (wire drive) is bbyers@altamotive.com
ruclips.net/user/shortsFXI-K7E4sbg?feature=share here is my running video with the solid flex shaft. Not the best but was on the river with low visibility.
Get on with it already
Nitro is much better then electric cus it's much more fun
