Lay beside me, tell me what they've done Speak the words I wanna hear, to make my demons run - He meets a woman who has had a similar bad experience with the world and he feels that they can "comprehend" each other. The door is locked now, but it's open if you're true If you can understand the me, than I can understand the you - He has closed himself off from the world and is considering opening up for her, as long as she is “true” and not like the rest of the world. Lay beside me, under wicked sky The black of day, dark of night, we share this paralyze - He believes he has found someone he can open up to, they can be two against the evil world. The door cracks open, but there's no sun shining through Black heart scarring darker still, but there's no sun shining through No, there's no sun shining through No, there's no sun shining... - Sunlight is symbolic of purity and safety. He opens the ‘door’ to his heart, but she betrays him like the rest of the world, being impure like the rest of the world. ‘Black heart scarring still’ is saying how when he thinks that he cannot have anything worse happen, it does. Come lay beside me, this won't hurt I swear „She loves me not, she loves me still“, but she'll never love again She lay beside me, but she'll be there when I'm gone Black heart scarring darker still, yes she'll be there when I'm gone Yes, she'll be there when I'm gone Dead sure she'll be there... - In a sudden rage, he kills her. He tries to justify it by saying that she never loved him, but he realized that she did love him even though she was insincere. ‘She’ll be there when I’m gone’ ; he is saying that he’ll see her again in heaven / hell / afterlife. Lay beside me, tell me what I've done The door is closed, so are you're eyes But now I see the sun, now I see the sun Yes now I see IT..... - After killing her, he closes back up and sees the sun. He feels safe being alone and closed off from the world, the world is only there to hurt him. I take this key (never free...) and I bury it (never me...) in you - Is symbolic of killing her for betraying him. He takes the key to his heart and buries it along with her so he cannot be hurt never again. Because you're unforgiven too.... - Is referencing the first song. In the first song, he called everyone who wronged him “Unforgiven,” so now he says she is “Unforgiven too”, the same as the world, out there only to hurt him.
actually in the first one, he admits the unforgiven, the old man and whipping boy done wrong is him. It seems to me, and makes sense if you look at the lyrics and understand metaphors, that the first could have been written around Kenny and Sante Kimes (look up interviews and documentaries), and that this one is from Kenny's point of view toward his mother, whom was a narcissist, had control over him, that he followed blindly. They were separated when both were convicted obviously, and i feel that after being out from under his mother's influence, he kind of woke up in a sense as well as his mother died while serving her time, and so this may also be him coming to grips with the fact that she had conned him into doing all these awful things and brainwashed him and now he must face the guilt.
These lyrics, as well as the lyrics from the two other Unforgiven songs - are incredible. So much meaning, so much emotion. Also incredible riffs on all three. Metallica are one of the best bands of this generation.
Marshall Watson Yes, their prime has passed and we will probably never get the level of MOP, Black Album, or AJFA again. But that is life and a band cant remain amazing forever.

I never saw anything about death, I more see abandonment. Like even though he's trying to move on from the first unforgiven, he ends up pinpointing the blame to one person instead of the whole world. This also looks like it's continued in unforgiven 3 when he realizes he was to blame all along, still not forgiving. As for the details I don't really know. Maybe two people with similar life experiences as described in unforgiven 1. The lyrics in the song though undoubtly describe his pain and feeling toward this situation though. I guess that's the great thing about Metallica songs, they're all up for interpretation.
This is just a beautiful song and I get chills every time I listen to it. This is just one of those songs that you need to listen through the whole thing... you get so transfixed in the song that its hard to stop listening to it halfway through. I believe so anyways :)
Thank you for showing the words. Being hearing impaired songs are difficult without turning up the sound loud enough to annoy the neighbors. By the way: I am 73 and have only just discovered Metallica.
It's 2019 and i have been listening to this song for more than a decade ,surely will continue this ...and everytime i listen to Metallica's songs i find peace.......\m/ \m/
+Trevor E. Well, technically all metal has some remnant of country. Though, some of the more modern, darker stuff has ground it down to a point where it is unrecognizable. Check out some of the other bands around Metallica's era too! :D Quite a few blues and country elements. As well (if I'm not mistaken) I believe James grew up in that kind of culture.
Metallica is timeless. This song perfectly describes my divorce from my wife who I still love but due to a back injury I became not good enough. But her POS 10 year older ex boyfriend is......
PeacefulJoint it's not. I'm sorry that you are dealing with it as well. It doesn't make me feel any better being not alone with that happening. I appreciate everyone's comments and my heart goes out to all of you. It's amazing how bad a broken heart can hurt. Almost makes you wish you have no feelings at all.
Owismael It's insane how tranquil this song can make you. I could be having the shittiest day and when I hear this song, all the troubles seek to float away as I see myself sinking into a rock n roll coma. Fucking love this song. Sorry for my inappropriate language.
I love music it helps me figure out how to deal w things by rehashing my feelings by listening to certain music over and over. Sometimes it's hard for me to even give new music a chance
My friend who used to shoot dope with me sent me this song after she passed and the lyrics are just way too fitting for us She sent me this song right as i drove past the most beautiful lake in the world I had goosebumps all over my body Every lyric fit us to a T Ive been trying my best to live the clean life now that my dear gypsy sister is gone but I will never forget she sent this song to me I love and miss you so much Shelby Niles Metallica was your favorite band and I know it was you
I never liked metal/rock songs, but this! this is perfection! I love the lyrics, the music is so touching and hard hitting I think I'll give this genre of music a chance
no better than all of the new songs. that shit is trash, its made by a computer, with no talent at all. plus the singers use auto tone to make them sound good. so disappointing. todays music is

NITROGLICETINA METALLICA although “the me and the you,” is not incorrect technically, the MORE grammatically correct phrase would simply be “us” or “you and I” (or “you and me,” if the sentence would use “me” instead of “I” alone) The poetic use of this phrasing works for the song and is correct to any listener, enough
I wonder if we'll get an unfourgiven. Hopefully it has more of an "unforgiven 1 and 2" feel to it. Unforgiven 3 is good, but doesn't really feel like a third entry into the unforgiven series.
A lot of people seem to miss or not understand the part at the end. "I take this key and i burry it in you, because you're unforgiven too!" Think for a moment, this love story didn't work out.

I STILL REMEMBER THE VERY MOMENT I OPENED MY WIFE´S COFFIN TO KISS HER GOODBYE FOR ThE LAST TIME EVER, time just stood still in that dark, cloudy morning, and i just told her ´´i miss you already, babe, my soul IS with you and i will be here with you, be not afraid..´´ then i just close it and i remember i got on my knees trying to breath again, as if part of me had died along with her , just like I told her...everything just lost meaning , i was there and could not believe what was happening, like in a bad dream... ´´lay beside me, tell me what i´ve done, the door is closed , so are your eyes , but now i´ll see the sun ´´, sometimes i feel that verse was written for me... cannot write anymore...

this is my new favorite song, used to be No Leaf Clover but I can't stop listening to this one I keep playing it over and over for hours, I LOVE THIS SONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Lay beside me, tell me what they've done
Speak the words I wanna hear, to make my demons run
- He meets a woman who has had a similar bad experience with the world and he feels that they can "comprehend" each other.
The door is locked now, but it's open if you're true
If you can understand the me, than I can understand the you
- He has closed himself off from the world and is considering opening up for her, as long as she is “true” and not like the rest of the world.
Lay beside me, under wicked sky
The black of day, dark of night, we share this paralyze
- He believes he has found someone he can open up to, they can be two against the evil world.
The door cracks open, but there's no sun shining through
Black heart scarring darker still, but there's no sun shining through
No, there's no sun shining through
No, there's no sun shining...
- Sunlight is symbolic of purity and safety. He opens the ‘door’ to his heart, but she betrays him like the rest of the world, being impure like the rest of the world. ‘Black heart scarring still’ is saying how when he thinks that he cannot have anything worse happen, it does.
Come lay beside me, this won't hurt I swear
„She loves me not, she loves me still“, but she'll never love again
She lay beside me, but she'll be there when I'm gone
Black heart scarring darker still, yes she'll be there when I'm gone
Yes, she'll be there when I'm gone
Dead sure she'll be there...
- In a sudden rage, he kills her. He tries to justify it by saying that she never loved him, but he realized that she did love him even though she was insincere. ‘She’ll be there when I’m gone’ ; he is saying that he’ll see her again in heaven / hell / afterlife.
Lay beside me, tell me what I've done
The door is closed, so are you're eyes
But now I see the sun, now I see the sun
Yes now I see IT.....
- After killing her, he closes back up and sees the sun. He feels safe being alone and closed off from the world, the world is only there to hurt him.
I take this key (never free...) and I bury it (never me...) in you
- Is symbolic of killing her for betraying him.
Never heard anyone over simplify a Metallica song, mabey you should do it about fade to black

My two month old son loves this song. it can calm any tantrum and lull him to sleep.
No, no, you're remembering it wrong. Your two month old son goes to sleep listening to Enter Sandman, you conceived him to The Unforgiven.
Parallaxus Maybe "Nothing Else Matters" instead of "The Unforgiven".
lol I remember being in kindergarten and falling asleep to the And Justice For All album. I fell asleep to Blackened. That's how much I love Metallica!
yolanda ramirez my daughter loves a couple songs by Metallica and Ozzy, linkin park and also foo fighters

Yep. I rate it goes 2,3, then 1. They're all great :)
Nathan Busse hell yes
First is the best in my opinion, 2nd is my 2nd and third just sucks.
AdoreYouInAshXI the third is good too, love it.
I'm glad I got into these guys during my freshman year of High School.
I love the Unforgiven songs. I only wish they'd make a 4th one in their new album, but they should call it The Un4given
thats a badass idea
+Jr Freeman I tweeted to Metallica, Kirk, and Rob about it, but heard nothing back, lol
You do realize that, at this point, the album is already finished and they're waiting on the factories to press and ship the discs for release, right?
+TestECull of course I know that. It would just be cool if they did that in a future album if they make any more.
that made me really sad "the trilogy is finished" thats a small bit of metallica that seems over.

The setting of this flashback is the memory of her death, an eternal storm.

Both his days and nights have been darkened by her passing.
"The door cracks open

He believes he has found someone he can open up to, that they can be two against the world.
The door cracks open, but there's no sun shining through
Black heart scarring darker still, but there's no sun shining through
No, there's no sun shining through
No, there's no sun shining...
-
Sunlight is symbolic of purity and safety.
-
In a sudden rage, he kills her. He tries to justify it by saying that she never loved him, but he realized that she did love him even though she lied / cheated / whatever. The meaning of ‘She’ll be there when I’m gone’ is pretty obvious; he is saying that he’ll see her again in heaven / hell / afterlife.
Lay beside me, tell me what I've done
The door is closed, so are your eyes
But now I see the sun, now I see the sun
Yes now I see IT.....
-
After killing her, he closes back up and sees the sun. He feels safe being alone and closed off from the world, the world is only there to hurt him.
I take this key (never free...) and I bury it (never me...) in you
-
Is symbolic of killing her for betraying him. He takes the key to his heart and buries it along with her.
Because you're unforgiven too....
-
Is referencing the first song. In the first song, he called everyone who wronged him “Unforgiven,” so now he says she is “Unforgiven too”, the same as the world, out there only to hurt him.
This hits me so hard but calms me down at the same time
Not gonna lie it hits me to
This is just a beautiful song and I get chills every time I listen to it.
We welcome all.
When you understand the meaning of the song lyrics is when you truly understand the greatness of Metallica
Papa het is a beast in the lyrical department ! .. Literally all of these songs are written so well
Have to agree, totally!
Does he kill the girl in the song
Christina Moore sadly he does
Alexandros Mazonakis I heard this song so many times but I guess I really didn't get it until I actually read the lyrics
Oh, this song remains me when I was about fifteen. Ten years later I'm still feeling the same when hear it.
Same here time goes fast
David G. A. I literally just told my friend this. Every time you hear it, it hits you like the first time.
You've just said it: like the first time.
This video is so 2008 it hurts. Hurts so good.
This comment is so 2016 💀💀💀

...I don't even know the meaning of this line yet it impacts me deeply.
To know the meaning of that part you need to understand the whole song.
I'll leave a post so look up for it
Good music is universal. If you know that it has meaning, and you can always tell, then that's all you need.
He shoved up a key in someone's ass.
I'm guessing the key to his heart that he keeps saying gets darker.
Lol dido
It's 2019 and i have been listening to this song for more than a decade ,surely will continue this ...and everytime i listen to Metallica's songs i find peace.......\m/ \m/
Truly a masterpiece of a song. Even in the guitar solo I hear the pain. Metallica is truly special for having made this.
I listen to hip hop mostly but god damn this is good stuff! U gotta respect good music when you hear it and damn this is great music!
Go check out Nothing Else Matters, Fade To Black,... from Metallica. Those are good too
thank you!!!
vacumecleaner and stop listening to hip hop its idiot music
Really. I stopped listen to hip hop, rap when I got into rock and metal.
happentodie dont be ignorant lol
This song is very manipulative. It makes me listen it again every time.
The Unforgiven II has a bit of a country flare to it, I dig it. I was pleasantly surprised that it actually worked for Metallica.
Not this generation..stop givong credit to tbis fucko offspring
What?
Listen to Mama Said
+TheSinquisitor Well the pentatonic (Rock/metal) scale came directly from the blues scales so yeah
My dad raised me on Metallica. Metallicas my favorite ever since i was little. Still is and always will be.
This song is something phenomenal!

what the hell did you think Goku listened to? Justin Beiber?
Not really a big fan of anything post-Black Album, but this one was excellent.
Metallica is timeless. This song perfectly describes my divorce from my wife who I still love but due to a back injury I became not good enough. But her POS 10 year older ex boyfriend is......
how is he better than you?
Dan Mayer that's terrible, but think of the bright side: you don't have to stay with a cheating, betraying woman like her.
She doesn't deserve you'
Dan Mayer I understand man. The mother of my son who I have been with for 5 years now just left me for somebody else. Shits not easy.
I grew up listening to this. Here it is 2019, and I still turn to unforgiven and unforgiven 2 when my depression gets too much to handle.
First band I really like. This is my favorite here.
amen
Same here
Same here.
i dont like no rock bands and songs' metallica is way beyonce
wow dude just wow
Whenever i listen to this song, i immediately get relaxed, amazing lyrics too.
Owismael
It's insane how tranquil this song can make you.
There are no words that can describe those Metallica masterpieces ....but the first Unforgiven is the best in my opinion
This is secretly my favorite song by Metallica. I just adore James Hatfields voice in this song.
2020 and I can confirm
This is still legendary af
It's uh not actually 2020 though

I've been listening to Metallica for as long as I can remember. Maybe even my whole life. I'll never stop loving their music
This song will never lose its place in my heart
This would work great on the intro or end credits to a movie.

Davi Drakos Same here i think my 50th time......
Davi Drakos hell yea!
I never liked metal/rock songs, but this! this is perfection! I love the lyrics, the music is so touching and hard hitting I think I'll give this genre of music a chance
Hussam Nour Try listening to the first Unforgiven
If you also like the harder songs of Metallica, you should also try Avenged Sevenfold and Disturbed. Rock and Metal these days are SO under-rated.

I do prefer the older bands but AS and disturbed are pretty good

no better than all of the new songs. that shit is trash, its made by a computer, with no talent at all. plus the singers use auto tone to make them sound good. so disappointing. todays music is
2018 almost 2019 and you are still correct!!
This song really deserves for those who were not be UNFORGIVEN until to our last breathes.
Lay beside me and tell me what they've done
And speak the words I wanna hear to make my demons run
The door is locked now but it's open if you're true
If you can understand the me then I can understand the you
Lay beside me, under wicked sky
Through black of day, dark of night, we share this, paralyzed
The door cracks open but there's no sun shining through
Black heart scarring darker still but there's no sun shining through
No there's no sun shining through, no there's no sun shining
What I've felt, what I've known
Turn the pages, turn the stone
Behind the door, should I open it for you?
Yeah, what I've felt, what I've known
Sick and tired, I stand alone
Could you be there
'Cause I'm the one who waits for you
Or are you unforgiven too?
Come lay beside me, this won't hurt I swear
She loves me not, she loves me still but she'll never love again
She lay beside me but she'll be there when I'm gone
Black hearts scarring darker still, yes she'll be there when I'm gone
Yes she'll be there when I'm gone, dead sure she'll be there?
What I've felt, what I've known
Turn the pages, turn the stone

Yeah, what I've felt, what I've known
Sick and tired, I stand alone
Could you be there
'Cause I'm the one who waits for you
Or are you unforgiven too?
Lay beside me, tell me what I've done
The door is closed so are your eyes
But now I see the sun, now I see the sun
Yes now I see it
What I've felt, what I've known
Turn the pages, turn the stone
Behind the door, should I open it for you
Yeah, what I've felt, what I've known
So sick and tired, I stand alone
Could you be there
'Cause I'm the one who waits
The one who waits for you
Oh, what I've felt, what I've known
Turn the pages, turn the stone
Behind the door, should I open it for you? (so I dub thee unforgiven)
Oh, what I've felt
Oh, what I've known
I'll take this key and I'll bury it in you
Because you're unforgiven too

Songs like this one will let Metallica in the history of music like the greatest band ever existed.
"The me and the you", you can not say, correct me if I'm wrong, anyway wonderful song, good Metallica! ♥️
NITROGLICETINA METALLICA although “the me and the you,” is not incorrect technically, the MORE grammatically correct phrase would simply be “us” or “you and I” (or “you and me,” if the sentence would use “me” instead of “I” alone)
The poetic use of this phrasing works for the song and is correct to any listener, enough
They just said it. mic drop

This was the first Metallica song I ever listened to, and so will my offspring.
First Metallica song I heard was master of puppets
I wonder if we'll get an unfourgiven. Hopefully it has more of an "unforgiven 1 and 2" feel to it. Unforgiven 3 is good, but doesn't really feel like a third entry into the unforgiven series.
Parallaxus black ops 1/2 somewhat resemble while black ops 3 is completely different... stay woke
Parallaxus Have to agree but it's not a bad song by any standards either. It rounds out the trinity of songs well though
Thomas Overy Definately agree, it kinda stands on it's own while still incorporating the original vibe in certain parts.
A lot of people seem to miss or not understand the part at the end. "I take this key and i burry it in you, because you're unforgiven too!" Think for a moment, this love story didn't work out.
One commie boi just like the ussr and china, it didnt workout
