How far can you stretch a 2.0-litre motor? How much power can you squeeze out of it? According to Mercedes-AMG, 310kW seems to be the answer.
And the result is one of the most powerful 2.0-litre performance cars ever put on sale, the 2019 Mercedes A45 S AMG. We finally got our hands on one and spent a day out on an airfield drag racing it against the limited edition BMW M2 CS, and you can watch that video here:

In this video, our relatively tame motoring journalist Ciro De Siena is let loose on a 2km runway in Merc's million-Rand little monster. Is this car just a straight-line hero, a robot-to-robot racer? Or is there enough in the dynamics department to keep you interested when things get twisty?

I agree with you about the road and tyre noise, it is rather loud and bothersome. Even the interior cameras picked up the noise.

I remember when the B7 Audi RS4 first came out in 2007. It had 309KW and cost just under R600k. The E92 M-Tree had identical power but a slightly higher price tag. 14 years later, we have hatchbacks with more power, at twice the price. At what point will this madness stop?
More power from fewer cylinders... fuel economy also way better now.

Had the previous gen A250 sport and my biggest gripe was the boot space, I know it is for non parent people,but I got a kid a few months later and 1 pram should not fill a boot

Excellent review, as always! I completely agree that the Performance seats should be the only configuration for the A45. I have been driving my 2015 model with Performance seat and loving them, even on long (5-7 hours) trips. Being ready to trade up to the a45s (pre-loved) is tempting but your comments about the road. Noise is a deal-breaker. RS3 may be the solution.Cheers, V

I remember back is 2012 I think when the 1st A45 was launched. It cost 620k entry level and this new one is almost double the amount yet you don't get double the power. It's crazy how expensive things have become.

The road noise is because you have Cup 2 tyres on the car. The car usually comes with Pilot Sport 4s tyres which don't make a lot of noise.
Yeah i never noticed the tyre noise that he is moaning about when driving the A45 s. I was like I better check it out next time.

R1.4-R1.5 bar is what most of them go for with good specs. which is insane. M2 Comp any day over this. Good video though

Well balance review 👌, beast of a car but not perfect!
in the first race between the CS and merc, the CS doesnt launch fully. a few minutes later when the CS launches you can see the difference. no smoke or the back of the CS doesnt drop as the mercs does in full launch or the bm does later on....

People said the road noise is there but nothing crazy.
Probably in your market, the A45 has different tires than those in other markets.
Like your A45 only gets basic seats, but even A200d in my market gets memory seats.

How dare you insult a Valiant. My grandpa had one and I loved that interior. Especially the front bunk seat, especially in the brown... Vinyl...
A Class are beautiful cars I own 1 but, and few things I hate about it is the seats have no much support ,road noise and could be too bumpy of uneven roads.
The tyre noice is because of the run flats. I always advise when purchasing a MERC
to change them to the normal tyres 🤞🏽🤞🏽

The Mercedes A45 S AMG is the fastest hatchback in the world. However, it costs an arm and a leg, 1.1 Mil for a hatchback is a lot in my opinion. May I suggest an alternative to that - the 2016 Ford Focus RS. It's as competitive and sporty as the A45 S AMG but with half the price.
Even at that price it's way too high
I wish Mercedes put that engine in a 2 door sportscar. The A-class is a hatchback which kinda kills the appeal for its price.

Weird, I long distance travel like in a commercial plane comfort with no disturbing road noise with my A45S with Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tyres came with stock. Your tyres or road quality is different, then.

Have you seen the interior? Its better than most middle class, even high class cars. Thats the difference between the A45 and other hot hatchs. Ofcourse it has to come at a price
