Out where I live, response time is 30 minutes, if you’re lucky. The cops are just here to check the scene and dispose of the formerly alive home intruder. Of course, they’re also deputies, so that’s a little different. They know the drill, they live out here too.

Cops aren't there to protect you anyway. It really is kinda irrelevant (in most cases) whether the police come 5 minutes after or an hour. My first argument is that if you want police to work properly, you probably need more funding for a better training, more incentive for good people, more control over the officers, more officers for controlling the situation, so that one officer shouldn't have to use a lot of force, instead multiple officers control the situation which also leads to less personal racist acts and more surveillance so that racist cops can be identified and fired. The situation in your country have nothing to do with this.

They also need to have access to more counselling and therapy. They may have passed some sort of psychiatric test before becoming cops but many of these cops had been through many situations that put their lives in great dangers. Many have watched their comrades get killed or injured. Many have suffered injuries themselves while performing their duties. At the end of the day what we need to remember is that everyone has a breaking point and no matter how strong you are at the beginning the accumulation of traumatic events can may you suddenly snap and lose control. That's why they need more funding to address these situations.

Out where I live, response time is 30 minutes, if you’re lucky. The cops are just here to check the scene and dispose of the formerly alive home intruder. Of course, they’re also deputies, so that’s a little different. They know the drill, they live out here too.
15 minutes is fast, I heard a woman getting beaten and our police department in the UK is 10 mins away, it took them half an hour to get here and she was hiding in the woods but he came back and got her, he was throwing her on the car and beating her. I went to help and he almost hit me. These kids - they have no idea.
Cops aren't there to protect you anyway. It really is kinda irrelevant (in most cases) whether the police come 5 minutes after or an hour. You need to protect yourself, whether that is with weapons or self defense skills (preferably both). You can't run from a rapist or murderer while calling the police and expect them to be there on time to get him off you or something, they really have not thought it through
In my city they have gutted the police department to the extent that the state police help patrol. And YES I live in a Democratic city in a Democratic state.

What about not defunding the police, but intervening and force these departments to do a better job at background checking the police officers they hire. These bad apples who are wrongfully hurting civilians need to be removed and should get consequences for their actions. It’s not right to wrongfully hurt anybody of any race. This current racist justice system is giving racist folks the chance to terrorize innocent black folks just by the basis of their skin. They should forcefully restrain people who are a threat, not just bc they are black. My first argument is that if you want police to work properly, you probably need more funding for a better training, more incentive for good people, more control over the officers, more officers for controlling the situation, so that one officer shouldn't have to use a lot of force, instead multiple officers control the situation which also leads to less personal racist acts and more surveillance so that racist cops can be identified and fired.
The situation in your country have nothing to do with this.
preen that’s the thing, they shouldn’t be working in ALL ASPECTS of our lives. Suicidal? Call the police. Injured? Call the police. Domestic abuse? Call the police. There should be other branches that handle these types of things with specialists in these branches who can handle the situations better than cops would. You would still have police to go after bank robbers, violent people etc. but they just wouldn’t be answering calls about things other than those listed previously.

It is impossible to do regular check-ups on cops mental thinking...can't read minds and anyway police unions would not stand for that. Only way to lower the cost of policing is for the populace to reduce their criminality which will probably never happen in USA but might be improved by longer prison sentences and no leniency at all.
Japan, Singapore, S. Korea and Taiwan have very very low crime and low cost of policing because of that. Those are high Eye Cue nations....the higher the average Eye Cue the lower the crime. All are super clean...Japan is famous for being super clean (regarding litter) while having almost no public trash cans on the streets...the people just don't litter and so street sweeping and trash bin collection costs are basically zero. They also need to have access to more counselling and therapy. They may have passed some sort of psychiatric test before becoming cops but many of these cops had been through many situations that put their lives in great dangers. Many have watched their comrades get killed or injured. Many have suffered injuries themselves while performing their duties. At the end of the day what we need to remember is that everyone has a breaking point and no matter how strong you are at the beginning the accumulation of traumatic events can may you suddenly snap and lose control. That's why they need more funding to address these situations.

the problem is some people dont understand that defund the police does not mean get rid of it. People on both sides, liberals and conservatives. Defunding the police (I think) is a good idea. the police are heavily over funded. in some states more than others. we have police in places they don't need to be and doing things they shouldn't be doing. For example mental help, police are often first responders rather than more qualified people. Many schools are practically run by police. by removing funding from those areas, large amounts of money can be given to places more in need, such as schools and mental help institutions.

There's an old saying " “God made man, Sam Colt made men equal, but John Browning keeps men free.” For those who don’t find it obvious, the idea is that a larger, stronger, younger, more brutish man is only the equal of a man - or woman - who has a decent handgun. For those who don't know, Colt made a very popular revolver post Civil War and Browning made machine guns and the Model 1911 semiautomatic pistol (Used in both World Wars and still very popular today)).
