Frank, I am so glad you like the Mclaren Artura, because I was very impressed by it. I was not sure of what you were going to say about it. So I was hoping you didn't give it the Axe.
Even though I also had a problem with the name (I think they should have stayed with the alpha-numeric format), one of the things I liked best about the Artura is that it got right what it seems Ferrari 488 messed-up. Both the Artura and the Ferrari 488 have the same kind of side intake Door cutout designs. But the Door handle of the Ferrari 488 sits so low, it makes the Door look like it's saggy & melting. However, the Artura has its Door handle at the top, making the Door look stern & solid.
I think your idea of using vertical bars instead of a mesh in a Super Car's rear is absolutely genius. I have always admired when Mercedes & BMW use vertical Bars in their Grilles. But I never thought of it in the rear.
Above all, based upon your critique of the Artura, I now salute you as a true Car design grand master. Much respect to you.

    • @FrankStephensondesign

@@FrankStephensondesign Frank, I see what you are saying. The rear vent of the 2021 Porsche 911 Targa & Convertible have vertical chrome bars (not blades as you mentioned though) and it looks very elegant.
By the way, forgive me for being pesky, but it is simply an honor to be able to get even the smallest nuggets of wisdom from such a giant of the Car Design industry like you.
In addition, I told some commercial airline pilots about you, and a little bit of the stories I heard you tell in some of your interviews. They were so impressed that they thought I should have been a Professor teaching in a University. That made me realize that it will be a good idea if you would consider writing your Biography. The Cars you have designed have brought joy to billions of people around the world. I think knowing the stories behind their beloved vehicles will give them a better appreciation for the Cars sitting in their Garages or driveways.

I think it’s so underrated for what it was designed to be, an urban car. In my eyes, it was way before it’s time and still can keep up with other cars in 2021. Big windows, very good all-around view, small turn radius, good handling, modern unusual recycled materials, carbon fiber and aluminium body, good charging speed and it’s quite fast! I was part of the small group modelling the exterior of this back in 2018 (front/side mainly) and I remember wondering how many would pick up it’s actually carry-over 720 headlamps.. they’re well disguised in there

Side view of the car reminds immediately of Ferrari F40 or P4, but its OK. The interpretation of the NACA-Duct looks organic and how Mclaran intigrated it in the body is very nice. Colour of the car is also very nice, something different from the papaya-colour usually used by McLaren, now they have someting fresh and it reminds a bit of Lamborghini. Frank, before you mentioned mesh I knew alredy you would say somthing negativ about it. And I completely agree with you. Mesh doesn't look good any more today, that's obvious, would be nice to see your solution of the rear end. And on the rear of the car we expect a little bit more drama than we see it now. Thank you for review, Frank, it was a pleasure to see the video.

It seems to me like Frank often sets the bar for design language wherever he works, and when he leaves they struggle to know how to progress it. Look at MINI, they have really struggled moving the design language on. Or Fiat with the 500 (the new electric one finally progresses it). Looks to me like McLaren are struggling to move it on, it’s a nice car but is it enough progression? Not sure. Just looks like another McLaren.

Amazing video as always, Frank! I couldn't agree more with you about the taillights. Cars like the Artura (and Chiron) would be much more attractive in the rear if they followed your P1 taillight design where the light is integrated into the existing outline of the rear. I hope McLaren (and others) are taking notes from your channel!

I don't like that most modern cars front is designed to look angry, aggresive, with lines resembling too evident human or animal face expressions. I think you can get an imponent, intimidating presence with more calm looking designs or at least not so animal-like. One example to this could be the Aston Martin vantage from the 90s. Greetings

I will admit, when it first launched 4 months or so ago,I wasn't convinced.perhaps it 2as the launch color that put me off but I saw a picture of it in a bright red which I kinda prefer a dark red like nerello red or volcano red but I'm in love with the design.it has similarities on the side of the emira which I also love.
Frank, even if you may never personally read this, thank you for giving back with your expertise.
In my opinion, going full EV is a mistake. If you listen to something like a Pagani Huyara R or novitec 812 N-Largo it's the soul stirring emotions that only the sound of a ICE engine like a f12 or similar that no matter how fast, how efficient an EV is in comparison.an EV will NEVER HAVE.it will be incapable of replacing it.
I love your work man,I'm an amateur designer and I feel that coming up with multiple design languages that are unique is a difficult thing.
I have noticed that there are certain elements that are consistent with my designs but I try changing that certain element and in my eye it doesn't seem to look proper.
I have always struggled with perspective and 3D drawing but I'm decent at side profile.
    I'm 37 btw.
If I were to say any kind of design influences I have it would be the F40,F50,DB9,Countach,corvettes,Pagani Huyara and Zonda,288 GTO,250 LM,Enzo
I'm also not ignorant of things like aerodynamics but I would like to see what your take is on a Pagani or Koenigsegg.I realize they don't have a long history on which to draw on but the new Countach that Lamborghini is developing.I think from the picture I have seen it's taking some inspiration from the LP400.
    Maybe I'm wrong.

6:40 - That area improves the performance of the car, because it reduces the drag (the air stream is being redirected far from the wheel spokes) and helps to stabilize the air stream, which typically gets turbulent at the moment it reaches the rotating tyres that try to push the coming air stream against the road, thus create lift and drag.

It's interesting regarding the mesh topic. I've always seen it more as a way to keep unwanted debris and elements out, such as leaves and whatnot. I completely agree that people who stick their hands in deserve the following burnmark as a reminder of their stupidity.
Simultaneously, I don't mind mesh when the airflow is deliberately meant to be restricted - this is more often relevant in the frontal part and intakes, where mesh design can be used to enhance the overall aesthetic of the car's visual appearance (more techy, more classic, more product design, or something else entirely).
I think for the Artura, the biggest criticism I'd give, is that McLaren overall are slowly risking falling into the trap of overfamiliarizing their vehicle lineup, to the point where each model and update looks so similar that people start to lose interest in the individual car, because it doesn't manage to make a name for itself. This is something that more and more brands are starting to suffer from today, where family feeling has become such a dominant trend. It's always desirable that people can recognize a car's brand purely from a glance, but there is a fine line where if you cross it, the individual car itself starts to lose its own personal brand value and ends up becoming forgettable - which in the long run hurts the brand image of the company. It's like taking a Jaguar E-Type. Yes you know it as a Jaguar, but you also know it purely as the E-Type. The car can stand on its own regardless of the brand behind the name attached. The individual model has its own purpose and soul. And I don't find that soul in the Artura, simply because McLaren has done too much of the same approach for too long. First the P1, and later the 720 was a breath of fresh air, and McLaren needs more of that.

Thanks for you comments Frank, you're the only person seriously analysing design in this way on RUclips and these cars live and die by design as much as performance!
The two areas of the design that I take issue with are:
    1) The heavy edge treatment on the side intakes, wouldn't that be better softer to avoid distracting from the other curves nearby?
    2) The roof/ B pillars. From the rear 3/4 view is seems a bit bubble like, almost as if the car has been inflated. You can get a similar sense in the Lotus Evora and the Noble M600. The original 570s has this while the 570GT with it's rear hatch glass was very different and (to me) more resolved. It seems to lack tension compared to say the Ferarri 458 in this area.
What do you make of this aspect?
    Thanks once again

Why mesh, Frank? Think how much cheaper it is, even a single unit price difference. Project that over a whole years worth of manufacture... Precisely the type of people we don't need in the gene-pool in control of the asylum's purse-strings.
The end result is morbid mediocrity.
NB: Your 'blades' idea is beautiful. Would really tie-in the diffuser, stop it looking like tacked-on aero. These mesh-grilles with the progressive scale cut-outs are REALLY gonna date these cars down the line. Everyone is doing it, from Peugeot to Ferrari to Mercedes.
Bless you I do really enjoy your videos, some real quality content.

Great deconstruction of the design as always. Personally think this car looks like a mashup of all the previous mclarens. The front remidns me of the 720s combined with the headlight area from the 650s. rear is again like a mix of 570s and 720s and the side is like the 600LT. Wish Mclaren wouldnt play it so safe. Even though the car doesnt look bad. As Frank says, it is evolutionary not revolutionary. Which might not necessarily be a bad thing, but in this case the Artura seems like another forgettable model in the mclaren range. Kinda wish they made something with similar shock value as when the P1 came out. But again, personal opinion. Great video :)
