- Frank talks about the influences of both art and science in car design, and design in general; he touches upon how these two elements have shaped his work throughout his illustrious career. Frank goes on to share his anticipations for the future of design.
Frank Stephenson is one of the world's most renowned and influential car designers today. He was born in Casablanca, Morocco. After growing up there, in Turkey and in Spain, he became a professional motocross racer, before moving to California to study automotive design. Frank began his professional design career in 1986 with Ford Motor Company and designed the iconic Ford Escort RS Cosworth, moving later to BMW Group where he designed the first BMW X5 and the award-winning New MINI. His next move was to Ferrari and Maserati, as their first ever Design Director. There he designed many supercars, including the Ferrari F430, the Ferrari FXX Super Enzo, the Maserati MC12 Stradale and the Maserati GranSport. He was then placed as Design Director for Fiat, Lancia and Alfa Romeo, where he was responsible also for the design of the new Fiat 500. Frank joined McLaren Automotive in 2008, creating a vanguard design studio and design team, and establishing a new and distinctive design language.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx
Frank has his own youtube channel where he explains his designs in detail - some of his designs will be the best we have ever seen!
Yup that's how I learned about him
My all time favourite Ferrari Enzo
I fall on love with Ferrari due to Enzo
@@VINAYAKSONI007 It’s one of my favorite Ferraris.
this is the dude who designed the McLaren P1, MP4-12C, Ferrari F430, Maserati MC12, BMW X5, Fiat 500 among others. Literally the greatest automotive designer of the modern era, so if you're gonna listen to anyone about design, it's this guy.
I feel like he's the Francisco Scaglione of this generation
scaglione is a genius that dont have enough of time to make us more art to love for
But i appreciate Stephenson as much too
Frank Stephenson is one of the best car designers ever
Yup
@Dev_Phoenix Roblox he has a vision
@Dev_Phoenix Roblox yes ik what you meant
I agree 👌
I've seen and noticed Frank telling all of us about the future..
The fact that the audience do not realize how much many of us will give to hear such an inspiring TED talk, this is truly amazing
I was chuckling at all his little jokes but it seems like they couldn't even smile. Must be fans of toaster cars lmao
@@ianshafer64 I wonder if they were told to stay as silent as possible so they can record the audio. I like that Frank tries to make it entertaining while keeping it thoughtful and "serious". Just enough humour to keep people engaged after the initial interest has gone off.
@@Endless-Riveryeah but some other ted talks that i know there is people laugh at jokes
Mister Stephenson is a true inspiration, I learned about him when I discovered his RUclips channel. Great to see how his brain works, when it comes to design.
He makes the subject so accessible. A real skill.
Frank's RUclips channel rocks!!
He designed the Mini Cooper, and also worked for Ferrari. He's also a cool guy. 😎
and BMW, McLaren, Fiat, Maserati... he is the best! his channel is great!
he designed the Ford Escort Cosworth RS.
@@shaggings I saw that episode... with the three wing design that Ford cheaped out on using.
Not used to seeing Frank that nervous, makes it even more interesting to watch because it shows he really cares about this talk
Honestly one of the coolest people in the world
he's literally GREAT in predicting the future, he designed the Fiat 500 which hasn't changed its design to this day, and the MINI Cooper - a car that looks as amazing, quirky and cool as it did back in the 2000s! And the Maseratti MC12 he designed is to this day my most fav car design ever.
the legend of car designers
Never know before most of the fantastic car on the road today was came from this guy. Super!
Frank Stephenson for president 2024!
Inspirational speech... dream huge and make it happen
Persistence wins resistance
Automotive design is very complex and extremely hard to rise to a view on the top of the world, Frank is one of the few who reached that peak.
Respect !
It's been downhill for bmw after he left
Love Franks designs
What an inspiration!
This is an amazing speech. Should get more views
Disagree. And after the first few minutes of pointless rambling about things OTHER than design, I can see why people stopped watching. I certainly did.
@@artistryartistry7239 Hmm...you love public speaking and don't start out nervous ? Then you don't care about the message. He's very good. Could the fault lie
Somewhere else. Your attitude...perhaps....
I love frank, but his power point is terribly 'designed' hahaha
It’s horrible by design😂
Yeah, and using those "default" quotes was kind of sad but in a positive way, I don't know how to explain this feeling :) Maybe it's because I also love Frank and his designs, but here he kind of shows he is not perfect... or just didn't have time to design the ppt :)
@@mater753s I'm thinking he might have just had a whole thing planned out in his head but the organizers asked him to make a PowerPoint so people can follow along a bit easier. I mean it's not a bad PowerPoint, better than the once I've seen from college students, hah. He might not be well versed in PowerPoint or perhaps he wanted people to not focus on an amazing PowerPoint but rather stay focused on the ideas of his talk. It's not perfect but I know he probably tried his best and that's why he's great. I know what you're feeling though and I agree :)
Probably about the time he was given. Frank is actually kinda love making great presentations based on what I’ve seen from his channel.. Anyway Through out almost a decade I work in the Automotive Industry so many designers are just not so good about making Presentation, only few stand out hahaha
Bravo Frank 🙌
Hi Frank, here's mine..
' greatness is the wonder between possible imaginings'
We never know who's great, wonder and the zeitgeist carries them
Nice pen Frank...@Bic 👌
Very inspiring!
Yup
i love this dude
Making others SMILE 😊
is what makes me creative💕
What a boss
Amazing
thank you
Аmazing person. I watch his chanell even though I do not desgin
👏👏👏👏👏👏 best!
Awesome
What a great presentation
Frank, I am so curious could you share what do you drive as your daily? I would love to know what is your ideal everyday car
For a designer his PowerPoint is really sad
tools are tools, no matter if it is paper or a screen... the pencil is not the tool of passion but the designer is. I am very confident that transparent refrigerator on 4 wheels from the presentation was "designed" on paper too... The mistake was definitely not in choosing a nonpassionate pencil, the mistake was choosing a sketcher rather than a designer
I can bore you with ideas and inventions ..form days, to weeks, to months, to years,& to decades at a time..But i never stop thinking about designing..even when Im in bed, I get up and write down ideas
Under the door you could possibly have ...a slide out drawer for your shoes...☯️
This man is the Steve Jobs of cars
I wonder what Sergio Pininfarina or Marcello Gandini thought about design. They certainly made a serious impact on design
There is no proof that Einstein ever said, “Logic can take you from A to B...” etc but he did say something similar according to the Saturday Evening Post in 1929: "Knowledge is limited. Imagination encircles the world."
I think he said "imagination is more important than knowledge."
6:28 until 6:40 he's just saying that he doesn't want to lose his job
A lot about his own vision while pointing to some very good quotes by others that will create the future, his very narrow view is saying we should stay on the ground because he can't imagine flying above as it is too dangerous.
The opposite will become the future while ground accidents continue in 2-dimensional space with many unforeseeable events while moving in 3-dimensional space will be orders of magnitude safer, faster and much more efficient.
He looks at nature but not the birds able to cross oceans on very little fuel safely avoiding the perils on the ground consuming more energy and effort to avoid death.
His channel is much more interesting than this talk
I love Frank. But there are objective measures of creativity (or divergent thinking as it’s known in literature). Check the Torrance tests of creativity. There are actually objective measures… association, what people do when they face an apparent dead end, etc.
Thanks for sharing👍
talking about car design in the far future is like talking about escalators or elevators. A space that moves you from one area to the next. Nobody will be owning a car. You press a button on your mobile device, a car appears and takes you to your destination.
the next step is that you don't leave your home at all. Just plug yourself into the network and work in VR.
I still got my notepad and bic pen open and ready nearby ..
Very interesting stuff but can't help but think the future of driving is going to be dull.
Well said my friend.
In the future cars will be just appliances like toasters without any soul or emotions to them
Does the word I BELIEVE YOU CAN'T ...
Fire up anyone elses blood pressure? I reply back quicker than usually.I'd love to show'm, as if I was from Missouri..😎✌️
I got no insight from this talk. Just about his work in the auto industry and his outlook on beautiful design
13:04 Isn't to be interactive with the car... like... you know... the same as driving it? just say'n
Frank is certainly a great car designer.
Frank is certainly not a great PowerPoint designer.
Lies, show off and typical motivational delusions .
@@FrankStephensondesign Wery shallow psichology from you. As always. Floating on the surface with mainstream.

This guy designed Ferrari F430? It is the ugliest Ferrari ever made in history.
so its this guys fault!
What?
What?
What?
Where?
@@letmesummarize1176 when?
Horrible speech.
i like lots of his cars but i dont think hes very imaginative. his vision of design seems quite basic
He designed many timeless cars so I think he did a great job. A basic designer couldn't do that
Maybe that's his key
Contrary Pocke1, I believe a designer with this perspective strikes the best balance between respecting that which is classic and the courage of breaking new ground! Listening to his comments on other designs, he was rich in his praise yet honest where ‘the rubber meets the road’!
A good design doesn't need to be too aggressive like the ones you see nowadays in lambos and other manufacturers
More lines and aggressive shapes doesn't mean its better
Line flow is the most important thing ever
Plus have you seen McLaren p1
Its one of the most beautiful cars ever
That single car toll today has changed how the world sees McLaren and given a design DNA to McLaren
Man designed the Ferrari F430 and Mc Laren P1, quite basic huh
