You have to be insane to buy a Collector Booster of this deeply undervalue set. It's totally bizarre that WotC would design a set like this with a 'draft focus' and then put such low value into it. On one hand, there will possibly be a lot of shock lands in each box, which could be where the ONLY value will be found, but on the other hand, this set is expected to (hopefully) tank shock land costs, thus hurting the value anyone can expect to crack. This is a bizarre, misfocused set from WotC. They should've just done two new Ravnica sets around the Mystery at Karlov Manor, and reprinted all the shocks in them, along with some other needed reprints. Only people drafting or buying packs from this set are people with extra funds to throw away. It'll be interesting to see just how low shock lands get to in a few months, tho.

I came back to magic after like 20 years out. Only thing I had is the collectors edition set still. I’m so overwhelmed with all the product that I can’t even figure out where to start, what to get, and how to even get started. Ugh.
Depending on the type of gameplay you are looking for, the best ways to start are either buying a preconstructed Commander deck or going to a local game store for a prerelease or draft event.
I love that Turnabout was not only first printed in URZA'S SAGA but was also reprinted last year in DOMINARIA Remastered. I saw that peek at the camera, Prof, haha.
I just checked: Shocks are around ten Euros each. That price is fine. They don't need reprints. I understand that a Mana Crypt for 100+ is unaffordable for most players but if you erode the prices of chase cards to under five bucks, there is no incentive anymore to buy or sell product. This is poison for the secondary market.
It’s neat when the Professor mixes things up, having another gent to talk to rather than just talking straight to the camera. I liked when he had Sheldon Menery on
love the playlist titles popping up to give the musicians real time credit! I'm really easing off boxes these days, but I can see opening some packs of these over the next season.
This and the Dr. Who opening make it seem like Brian has pivoted from being a long-time member of Wizards's naughty list to bring a part of their PR department. 🤔
Why not both? I'm a newer subscriber, but he definitely doesn't often have good things to say about their business decisions and the direction Hasbro/WotC is taking MTG. Maybe some elements of WotC are going under the radar and work with and respect the more outspoken communities.
Hey Prof, a loam is a type of soil that has a high silt content. Loams are generally known for having a high water capacity and are therefore particularly fertile soil when nutrients are applied correctly.
Ravnica is my favorite plane and I love the old border treatment. I cannot wait for this product. Really cool approach to have Carmen answer some questions about the choices in cards and art.
Prof And Carmen I love you both and thoroughly enjoy this personal tour of the collector booster box and hope people are kind to each other as we go into the holidays!
2.20 I love how the editkr completely ignores the prof's repeated requests for the collector booster boxes to go in the top right corner and instead puts them in more sensible places 😃😃
Wizards is pulling out all the stops they've done before for this set: serialized cards, anime cards, old border, shock lands, and upshifting Cyclonic Rift to mythic.
My favorite plane is ravnica, and it will continue to be my favorite plane. The guilds like dimir, Orzhov, Azorius, and rakdos are my favorites in that order.
Love the moments where Brian is like why not reprint this or make this more available and there is just an awkward laugh or silence... also always great seeing rhe greed on increasing rarity of stuff.
Ravnica was my first plane, gatecrash and dragon's maze got me into the game through art, mechanics, and flavor text. Despite protests from my wallet, im 100% buying collector boxes
Same, I started around M2014, Theros and Return to Ravnica block. It was the perfect bunch of blocks that grabbed a hold of me and did not let go. Ravnica aesthetics and guilds, Greek mythology but in MtG and M2014 was pretty damn decent. Too bad they dropped the ball with this product. Premium price for barely any value...it is just meh...
I adore Izzet, the comedy and chaos and amazing cards. I love engineering as well, so I think that also draws me to it...but overall, Izzet is my go-to guild.
Unfortunately for Savra lovers she is dead. Like super dead. Neck snapped, body possessed and reanimated, then crushed by Experiment Kraj and Rakdos levels of dead.
Easy pass on this set. Product is priced way too high for small chances for reprints (**cough Moar Shocklands cough**). Tired of the asinine gamble experience WOTC/Hasbro keeps shoveling every other month expansion. Buy Singles!
I'm kinda surprised to see prof like this set tbh. Prices overall going up with singles value seeming really meh as a whole, especially with the practice of bulk mythics in full force here as well. Would have really liked to see some honest discussion about why we need to have bulk mythics and rares to fill space when we're expected to pay $200+ for a product with no msrp. I'm not gonna say he's selling out, I think it's cool that the channel is getting these kinds of opportunities, but I do think there's something missing here. Shock lands should not be the most exciting thing about a $200 loot box.
Please note that I have not done my "Is It Worth It To Buy" financial analysis. A set can be excellent in many ways but still not have value given the price per box (which is as of yet unknown, please don't pay preorder prices, etc). This is a casual video, not an in depth analysis (which is coming).
@@TolarianCommunityCollege Really appreciate the context and the response! I think I personally really struggle with treating products with that degree of separation which is where my reaction came from. I've only been playing magic for the last year and a half or so, it's a bit harder for me to look and say "oh cool this card from ravnica" when I was never invested at the time. It is interesting for me to see the perspective of someone who's been so invested for basically as long as magic has been around which is why I enjoy your content as a whole and love your passion for the game. All that being said I am really happy to see you getting these opportunities and seems like you had a blast making the video which is what matters.
Og ravnica was my first intro to mtg when I was 11. I got the selesnya united precon. Still here almost 20 years later. Can't wait for this set to come out!!
It's nice to have a casual video like this every now and then where we aren't constantly critiquing everything. These kind of videos and a critical pricing video can both exist alongside each other and I believe the prof has plans for the latter to come out at the appropriate time. I'd advise other commenters to not jump the gun and assume this video is an endorsement of the set's financial value. It is very unfortunate that Hasbro decided to lay off people so close to the holidays while paying their CEO a massive bonus. There's really no excuse and I can understand why people would find it hard to ignore that fact even in the comments section of a light hearted video. I hope that everyone who was laid off finds work quickly. I really wish I could say Hasbro should change for the better but lets be honest that is extremely unlikely. Like most other companies in the modern world, the many suffer to make the few rich.
Archaeologist here! Loam, at least as we categorize it in my work, is a type of sediment, often being a relatively even mix of silt, sand, and clay and is often alluvially deposited. Loam can also be a very good type of soil for gardening, hence the flavor of the card.
Actualy, Otaria is a continent of Dominaria and we already had a Dominária remastered. But Otaria was built to feel separated from the Invasion part of the plane. So i guess it counts as new remaster. It would be so cool but one can only dream...
plus with the time they had finding cards for Ravnica …They’d be hard pressed to make a set worth buying a box of maybe with both Otaria blocks *shrugs*
@@jonous2001 But thats why is a remastered. They can add more sinergetic cards around the archetypes they want to promote. And there's a lot o cards that work amazing with those blocks. But i think it's coming together... kinda (lol).
person says that Turnabout was originally an IDW comic card and hasn't been in retro frame foil ever... it was in Urza's Saga originally and retro frame and foiled in Dominaria Remastered... Or were they specifically talking about that artwork?
Honestly, seeing you two gush over cards is fantastic. I'm probably going to buy singles from this set, but I love the chill vibe you two are giving off!
As prof always says, Buy Singles. and this set seems like the set to do so. on another note "never before seen split color" Proxy artists came out with that a long time ago WoTC just refused to do it so as always the players have to do it themselves. I have a few in my cEDH deck, old cards are very expensive lol.
As someone who prefers anime-style illustrations over western/more traditional illustrations (generally, not just in Magic), I wish WotC was better at directing the artists than this. Almost 100% of the anime illustrations in any MtG set are the most stripped down, "How to Draw Manga", baby's first shounen depiction one could conjure that I have to roll my eyes and groan at them when I should be getting excited for them. They are what a 60-year-old head-of-marketing persons think "hip anime" looks like.
I almost feel like this would of been an entirely different commentary on this pack ipening video if the prof. was alone while opening the pack instead of with the mtg employee roght beside him. 😅 Personally fine it stupid how Wizards has decided to print Shock Lands 2 sets in a row while keeping the box prices so high by not introducing MSRP...
It is Chris Cox that has the Hasbro machete just in case you wan to to borrow it for opening you next box. He has been using it too much recently so it would be a good thing to remove it from his hands

Weren't the Unfinity and Expedition Shock Lands full Art?
Yes you are correct. However… Expedition shocks were lottery ticket cards, and Unfinity shocks were ugly for most people lol
I love that Turnabout was not only first printed in URZA'S SAGA but was also reprinted last year in DOMINARIA Remastered. I saw that peek at the camera, Prof, haha.
So happy to hear that the shock lands were reprinted
Maybe now they will be within price range
They allready just were reprinted this year in Unfinity, though, right?
That's the real win of this set. I'm so ready to load up on shocks.
Shocks are already cheap AF lol
I just checked: Shocks are around ten Euros each. That price is fine. They don't need reprints.
I understand that a Mana Crypt for 100+ is unaffordable for most players but if you erode the prices of chase cards to under five bucks, there is no incentive anymore to buy or sell product.
This is poison for the secondary market.
thank you Professor I like seeing the smart people who make our sets.
Wish Prof would have mentioned value in the packs. “I still haven’t seen a shockland” “Well that was just the 2nd pack” $50 later…
So nice that wotc finaly give prof the recognition he deserve !
Hey Prof, a loam is a type of soil that has a high silt content. Loams are generally known for having a high water capacity and are therefore particularly fertile soil when nutrients are applied correctly.
Loam is like mulch. Like the dying undergrowth of a forest that piles up.
Neck snapped, body possessed and reanimated, then crushed by Experiment Kraj and Rakdos levels of dead.
so nice to see Carmen back, I loved her wonderful work with the Professor. it's so enjoyable to see you two chat like the old friends you are
Prof, what is your opinion on certain cards only being available in a more expensive product? Not versions of a card in a set, but the cards at all.
Missed opportunity to errata the Nephilim cycle
This video shows how enjoyable this hobby is.
I cant wait to buy a draft box of this set and sit on it forever when my playgroup inevitably fails to organize a draft night.
This was REALLY cool! Seeing you get to share this with part of the project team is really special. Thanks prof!
Easy pass on this set. Product is priced way too high for small chances for reprints (**cough Moar Shocklands cough**). Tired of the asinine gamble experience WOTC/Hasbro keeps shoveling every other month expansion. Buy Singles!
Thank you Wizards staff for putting so much love and care into this awesome game! I appreciate all of you
I'm kinda surprised to see prof like this set tbh.
Our group will wait and may buy some singles but we will not buy and sealed boxes. Thank you Carmen and Professor for the video.
Archaeologist here! Loam, at least as we categorize it in my work, is a type of sediment, often being a relatively even mix of silt, sand, and clay and is often alluvially deposited. Loam can also be a very good type of soil for gardening, hence the flavor of the card.
Assuming this video was made weeks ago, I hope Carmen wasn't fired from WotC recently
What's in a ravnica remastered box the tears of 1100 hasbro employees let go 2 weeks before Christmas...atleast it's not Pinkertons this time.
Carmen was a great addition to this video, so cool to get all those designer insights! In before Chris Cocks fires her on Christmas.
I am very happy to see that the relationship between WOTC and Prof improving.
I hope he can give us a remaster of Onslaught block , I feel like going back to that plane would be great!
Actualy, i'm working on an Odyssey/Onslaught cube for about a year now. Its hidden on Cube Cobra because i'm short on time to really put the required effort.
Thanks Prof - Very nice chat between you too, hope to see more similar videos. :)
As prof always says, Buy Singles. and this set seems like the set to do so. on another note "never before seen split color" Proxy artists came out with that a long time ago WoTC just refused to do it so as always the players have to do it themselves.
I have a few in my cEDH deck, old cards are very expensive lol.
when you hear that the 3rd commnder deck you built was the same commander as Prof 🤩🤩🤩
Personally fine it stupid how Wizards has decided to print Shock Lands 2 sets in a row while keeping the box prices so high by not introducing MSRP...
It is Chris Cox that has the Hasbro machete just in case you wan to to borrow it for opening you next box. He has been using it too much recently so it would be a good thing to remove it from his hands
Did I miss where thus was titled "sponsored content"?
Seeing as I didn’t get paid or even get to keep the cards, it’s not. Me talking with a member of WotC staff does not a sponsored video make.
@@TolarianCommunityCollege #everyoneGetsWOTCstaffToBringFreeThemContent
So disappointed by the choice of artwork for Teysa. Nothing scheming about her in that. :/
23:13 nice Timeless themed pack, 2 of the most played cards
I am loving seeing the cards from this set, the Ravnica sets are my favorites. Although I can't afford the collector boosters I am still going to buy into it, it's refreshing to see after so much Universes Beyond stuff being pushed. Sadly I feel as though a lot of the cards are a little dated in power levels, but there is still so much going for it, plus shocks!! I am truly an Izzet mage, was kind of shocked to hear you say you were on the Team. Good Video!
Missed opportunity to tell a WOTC employee the foiling is trash.
I am very excited to buy singles from this set. I've been pretty cheap with new sets due to growing dissatisfaction but if shocklands drop for a bit like they normaly do after a reprint I'm planning on buying the ones I'm missing to have a playset of each
I really hope this much love and care goes into Khans of Tarkir remastered. Fingers crossed
There is no Khans of Tarkir remastered. Maybe there will be eventually.
@@JasonOshinko My bad I was thinking of the upcoming Return to Khans of Tarkir
wish this set wasn't premium priced, was gonna buy/play a bunch of draft, but not for that price. buying singles will be nice i suppose
prof is gonna act like opening cards called "Skewer the critics" isn't a direct threat from WOTC
Definitely buy singles for shocklands after this they’ll be so cheap! Idk how you could possibly get 300$ with this set, there’s no heavy hitter like Force of will like Dominaria
The new bob-less bob looks friggin' wicked in retro frame.
Protect this man. He is a treasure. One love.❤️💛💚
Nah man I hooked to this series
Guildpact was the first ETB box I ever bought.. I miss getting them cause of the big card storage and everything that came with them .
