    I have studied dopamine and motivation for almost 10 years now. My best advice is: Quit all addictions so your brain will become more sensitive to dopamine and doing hard things becomes easy. Willpower rarely helps, changing your neurochemistry will.

    I did this just cause I didn't feel like doing social media anymore. It's been months at this point. I still don't have any more motivation than before lol I just have more time and I'm less mad at the world throughout the day. Cool idea but seems oversimplified.

    • @heyJordanParker
      @heyJordanParker  2 года назад +40

      You're right, it is vastly oversimplified!
      I'll expand it in a long-form video but here's the generic approach (hopefully it will give you an idea for what to do):
      1. Find what do you anticipate often during your days - things like notifications, emails, games (mobile games abuse this way too much), gambling, shows, anime, and so on.
      2. Exclude those from your "diet" for at least a week.
      3. Start reintroducing them one by one every week. The order is up to you; start with what you want the most, it should be fine.
      4. Track your motivation, happiness, and energy every single day. Just rate all of those from 1 to 5 and write that in a notebook or Notion.
      5. Check if the week off helped (based on your data). Check if reintroducing something had a negative effect. Depending on your physiology, you might want to do that reintroduction slower (e.g. if nothing ever happens, try excluding everything for a week and then reintroducing it every month).
      6. Check your baseline habits - the boring stuff like sleep, stress, food, going outside (the sun is shockingly useful for this), and social interactions. Those can dysregulate dopamine sensitivity too.
      7. Create something. Simple but effective and I like having at least one of those hanging around xD
      Hopefully that helps. Feel free to ping me in the Discord and I'll join you in figuring this out and help!

      When you see an 86 year old man, who didn’t believe in watching tv to be “entertained” , get onto the web on his phone to put something up for sale on FB, Craigslist etc and a year later all he wants to do is scroll the internet….sits in his recliner (now 87yrs) and spends 99% of his time looking on the internet for whatever…..this really seems to ring true! Sadly. The whole world spends bukus of time ON the INTERNET and on their PHONES.🤷🏼‍♀️ Even people who go out to spend time together (for dinner, movie, whatever) cannot stay off their damn PHONES!😂😂If you look around,…it has really become problematic with the way our society works nowadays. Even the damn doctors are on computers WHILE you’re sitting there telling what your issue is.🤷🏼‍♀️🤷🏼‍♀️ And,..these are people who get to decide on your HEALTH.
      It really has become insanity IMO and,…it wouldn’t take much for someone to invade our country because no one is really paying attention probably. 🤷🏼‍♀️ JMO

    I don't do social media, I never enjoyed going out, I dread going to work because I don't enjoy work life. I only go out if needed and at work I go through the motions to get the money to pay my bills. No dopamine there.

    • @kdnbj
      @kdnbj Год назад +7

      he didn’t say it was the solution to everything, and you’re also on social media now. You probably just sleep too much, have no driving factor, masturbate too much, or watch too much t.v., play video games, or do drugs. I’m not accusing you but these are things that also release extreme amounts of dopamine. Fix any issues you think you have, find a goal, and start working towards it.

    What if you’re 21 but have been depressed for 10 years? I just can’t see any light anymore, I think and think and think about a thousand scenarios of a future, but everything still feels dull, I do the things I like, I try my best to do what I have to do while wanting to collapse on the floor and just cry. But everyday I wake up I just instantly feel bad, no matter the weather, no matter how happy the environment can be, I still feel bad, you can show me 10 different houses, take me to 10 different cities, or 10 different countries it never changes, and yes I try to cheer myself up but it’s hard, there’s always something pulling me back, it’s like being stuck in quicksand, like a ball and chain. Social media does nothing to me, the most social media I use is RUclips mostly for listening to music or watching interesting videos and such. Music has been the only thing that has kept me here, saved me, and made me feel everything would be ok, my only friend basically it has kept me company and comprehension, somethings even as a kid I never had. I lost most of my friends in 2020 after quarantine hit, I realized even more that I was right and I never really had real friends, just at school, I often wanted to reach out to them (still do) but if they really were my friends they would’ve kept in touch to begin with, they were nice people really but I often felt invisible, by everyone even my own family. I basically have no one to turn to, I’m now all alone and struggling but with a bit more clarity of everything that’s happened, and I now can’t trust anyone, I often get angry at others because I don’t want them to hurt me, I don’t want myself to make false illusions into thinking anyone would want to be my friend. I could’ve had a friend but sadly my twin sister died stillborn a week after. All my life I’ve felt something missing, felt old somehow and felt alone, anxious and depressed since childhood. I don’t know what’s wrong with me anymore, hope, illusion, and music were the only things keeping me grounded, though now that I’m 21 everything feels worse, I know I’m “young have lots to live for” but how when even as a kid you failed, even as a kid you couldn’t live? I’m just tired.
    I’m sorry if it’s a long comment and this depresses or makes anyone mad (some people apparently get mad if they read anyone is depressed) I just want to vent it out to see if anyone else bothers or understands. If you feel like this, I can only you and I can get through it.

      What I hear:
      You want to make money, so you work.
      You don't like your work, so you feel bad.
      So I'd ask:
      What alternative ways you can think of for making money? (problem #1)
      What alternative jobs you can think of that won't feel that way? (problem #2)

      If that's not possible - doing extremely hard/unpleasant things has the same effect. Lifting heavy weights, cold showers, and doing challenging and kind of unpleasant things.

    Ok but how many times can you try and recieve no reward (like schoolwork you study for and still get F's) before your body just no longer expects dopamine from stuff and you feel empty even once accomplishments begin shoeing up again?

    • @heyJordanParker
      @heyJordanParker  8 месяцев назад +1

      What this sounds like is your intrinsic drive being replaced with extrinsic motivation.
      Fs and school accomplishments are not something you "create" as enjoyment. It's something completely external to you and they can kill your inner motivation (so to speak).
      The "solution" is to rely less on those external validations and more on your internal goals.
      Aka focus on inputs not outputs.
      It's not about whether or not you got an A.
      If about deciding to study for 3 hours and ACTUALLY studying for 3 hours.

    • @Vic-mj4ts
      @Vic-mj4ts 8 месяцев назад

      @heyJordanParker doesn't help my lack of internal motives but it's a more helpful response then "idk just work harder", thank you for the starting point!

  • @letsgetthisbread9374
    @letsgetthisbread9374 Год назад +2

    Not....everyone gets it in truly satisfying amounts though. I mean, so many disorders and illnesses are due to imbalances with dopamine.
    I don't usually get dopamine dumps from eating- its often a pain to get up off my but in the mornings to get dressed.
    I kinda looked this up for ways to stay motivated, buy just wanted to clarify:
    No. People's dopamine levels aren't always satisfying. Just because I do something I know I should, doesn't mean the reward feels worth it. Especially if i do things often and it goes completely unnoticed or gets messed up minutes later anyways. That just makes me feel distressed, honestly. :/

    • @heyJordanParker
      @heyJordanParker  Год назад +1

      Lots of people have a dopamine dysregulation of some sort. This is the result of companies monetizing our attention.
      You have 2 ways to stimulate your dopamine production:
      A/ Mindfulness - this can include any form, but it needs to feel boring (at least at first). I prefer meditation.
      B/ Pain - Pleasure and Pain are on the same scale. The more pleasure in your life, the higher your threshold for big dopamine spike. The higher the pain in your life, the lower the threshold. Cold Showers and Exercise can be a good start.

    • @letsgetthisbread9374
      @letsgetthisbread9374 Год назад

      @Jordan D. Parker I've actually got ADHD though so....not so much a monetization thing as much as a diagnosed lack of Dopamine in the prefrontal cortex but...yeah. Pain sounds like something I haven't heard before- im willing to give cold showers and excercise a try 🤔 thank you for the reply and help!

      If it makes you feel better - most people's dopamine system is broken (or "dysregulated"). Mine is too.
      While your upper limit might be different than others, I believe you can do a lot to do better. (Unless you're live like a monk and use your phone once a year to comment on one of my videos xD)

    • @heyJordanParker
      @heyJordanParker  2 года назад

      Absolutely it isn't.
      I'll explore this in further indepth but for now, here's another approachable idea to try:
      Try not using your phone for short periods of time. 30 minutes for example. Then build up from there. If 30 minutes is too much - try 15 or 5 or even 2.
      Build the skill up!
      Also, there are those boxes you can put your phone in and lock it in with a timer that you have to wait out to get it. Getting one of those might help more.
      Play with this and if you need more help or another approach - I'm always on Discord and I'll help (of course).

      @@heyJordanParker thank you a lot for the advice and I’ve actually been getting better at not using my phone but the biggest problem is probably that I need reference photos that’s why I want a printer but my mom won’t let me get one

    • @heyJordanParker
      @heyJordanParker  2 года назад

      @@2735angel So, what I understand is: you need to use your phone to stay productive and, at the same time, that's where the distractions live.
      Here are a few options to deal with that:
      1. Expensive - get a second machine for work. Maybe in the long run?
      2. Practical - download all reference images and turn your airplane mode on. That should work a lot of the time and is quite easy.
      3. Universal - install an app that blocks other applications from opening during hours. That might cost a few $ but it can allow you to use internet and have no distractions.
      Maybe those can serve as a starting point for you?

      In the perfect world, 1 or even 2 weeks.

      So, start with 1-2 days. Combine it with reduced overall daily usage and you will be way on your way.
