here's something I think could help with opening a pad in public: open it at home, put in a Ziploc bag or something. then use it when needed. no noise, no fear. you're welcome. 😎(idk)

I was never good at subtlety and had a "teacher" moment myself when I went to the bathroom to change my pad before class and the teacher refused to give me permission to go. I went anyways. Came back and he tried to humiliate me in front of the whole class by asking why I ignored him and was so disrespectful. So I said very loudly and made sure I had everyones attention, "You mean when I went to the bathroom to prevent the blood from overflowing into my underwear and clothes? I'm sorry, your right I should ask you for permission to do basic self care because your delusional sense of authority is offended by the untimely disobedience of my period." He stuttered and and everyone stared and he tried to say, "Well, why didn't you tell me it was because of that?" I was like "I didn't realize you needed an update on my bodily functions, next time I'll be sure to include how heavy my flow is and the consistency of the bloody as it comes out too." Needless to say the man was speechless but I was still given detention. I get more mouthy when menstruating, and I was very apathetic as a teenager.

My best friend once told me off - legitimately TOLD ME OFF - for taking my bag to the toilet. She chastised me for making it obvious. Like it would be the worst thing in the world for the three other girls in the room who go through exactly the same thing every month to know that I was going through it today. She felt that shame on my behalf and sat on it all the time I was out of the room, waiting on my return so she could blurt it out in a panic, intending to make me feel somehow in the wrong for discreetly getting on with my business not discreetly enough. I told her it would be more obvious if I took my pad out in front of them and waved it around on my way out.

I was in one of my classes and I asked to go to the bathroom and of course I took my bag with me. mind you its a small cross body bag that I always wear during my period and never take off at school so if I have to go to the bathroom I don't take it off my chair and then put it on. anyway so I stand up and start to walk out when a boy in my class loudly whisper-yells that I don't need to take my bag to the bathroom. I'm probably just going to be talking with one of my friends. then as I got very red in embarrassment a boy in my class who I have a crush on stood up told the guys off saying I can do whatever I want and pointed to the hanging thing where are phone have to be for class. and pointed out that my phone was there.

"blood is gross, let's not talk about this."
*is messing around with boyfriend on period when he notices my tampon strong*
    *he immediately backs up*
    "Ew, it's a tampon."
i told him i just wanted to cuddle because apparently i am viewed as disgusting for being a woman, and that's not right. I cried. It's not my fault I have to deal with guys saying shit like, "oh, she must be on her period" when I'm mad. Maybe if men understood what it feels like to be ashamed of bleeding out of their genitals, they'd get it.

I used to be very uncomfortable talking about it out loud and even talking about it with my friends. It IS dumb because women ( and trans guys) can't help it, it's natural. But I've always been taught it was something boys and men didn't want to hear about because "it's private" or "it's gross". But mostly, I've always kept quiet because of the consequences which are " oh she's on her period that's why she's reacting like that" during a class discussion, do you know how many times I heard that? As if discussing and standing up for people is just a hormonal reaction? But now I've learned not to give a shit. Because HELLO THIS IS MY BODY. My female classmates' openness about the topic really helped.

I first found this poem a bit over a year ago now, and ever since I listened to it, I never whispered for a pad again. I walked straight into the classroom where my favorite teacher was, during a class period that wasn't mine, filled with a majority of people I didn't know but some I did, and straight up asked if she had a pad. I wasn't quiet, I didn't hide it. I almost shouted over the room. She didn't have one, but this random girl I had never seen before in my life said she had a tampon I could use. I thanked her, went to the bathroom, and came back shouting that "Satan's waterfall wasn't going to be ruining this pair of underwear!"

If you're so mentally feeble you can't handle a woman saying she's on her period, you're bringing us down as a population. It's not that bad. The word, that is. The cycle, however, I hear is hell. Half the time I feel I should apologize for my weaker male counterparts for their insensitivity.

I love this so much and even before watching this video, my close friends and I, to which a few are boys, I tell them when I’m on my period. Straight. Up. Yes, they were uncomfortable for the first few times and yes, they asked me not to tell them because it is 'disgusting' and so I told them, "Dude, you want to have a girlfriend right? Well your girlfriend is going to go through this, your Mum? She'll go through it too, have a sister? She’s going to go through it as well. It is natural, and you will have to learn to get used to it, so when I tell you I’m on my period, I want you to understand that this is a stressful time for me and I ask you excuse me if I get too whiny, or if I’m in pain and need to leave. Do not feel disgusted by my natural cycle because if you do, then you are saying you are disgusted by every female that will ever grow up,"

Honestly, having friends that are mostly guys makes me a lot more laidback talking about this stuff. I forgot it sometimes makes people uncomfortable once and I literally said to my friend[there was someone new eating with us at lunch] “I have to go take care of girl stuff, I’ll be right back.” And he was all “okay, we’ll wait” and the new person gave me a look of half horror and half confusion as my friend reached in my bag and handed me my pad. Honestly, no regrets. My friends know that I’m a girl, and that means I bleed out of my vagina once a month. Some of them I respect that talking about it makes them uncomfortable but those it doesn’t, I’m pretty open about it.

Ironically, no girl in the class had anything on her, but he kept pads and tampons in his lockers and his pockets because he knew people forget and he wanted people to know it was okay and just something that happens, nothing to be ashamed of

Why do we ask “can I borrow a tampon” or “can I borrow a pad”
Borrowing something is using something for a little while then returning it.
I do not want that pad or tampon back after it’s covered in your blood! It’s like thanks sally for returning it now I’m gonna use it when I’m on my period! Next time let’s say yo can I just take a pad or tampon from you?
I just found it really funny how we ask to borrow it when we never return it😂

Mint cip because one day you’ll probably return the favor and “return” the used item, kinda like how you call a loan “borrowing money” you aren’t getting the same money back but yannow, you’re still getting money returned

I was lucky because my Mom taught me never to be ashamed of my period. It’s uncomfortable and can be gross, but it’s natural. When my periods started, i looked up everything about it. What’s these weird clots? Is it normal to be heavy? Light? What if it’s brown? Everything.
So I was that student who always had extra pads, tampons, chocolate, and Midol/Pamprin in their locker incase other students needed it.
If you were too embarrassed to ask your mom/sister/nurse, you could always ask me. This happened a lot when I was a senior in my JROTC classes bc the freshmen girls where scared of how their periods would effect them in drills and such.
While I never minded being the “mom/pad” friend, it was always struck me how ashamed other girls were about their periods. They always asked me how I could be open about my periods. How could I be so straight forward when it came to asking teachers to go to the bathroom to change my pad. How could I not be embarrassed?
I always asked them, “When did being a human become something to be embarrassed about?”

I got my period once out of nowhere when I was in class last year. I got a pass to go to the nurses. When I got there, there was some other students waiting for the nurse, but I said, "I'm on my period." They looked at me like 'WTH?' Then the nurse said there was some pads in the bathroom so I went there, got on a pad and new pair of paints for my others were SOAKED AF in blood. I got on and the nurse pulled me aside and said, "Next time you can just go into the bathroom if you need anything for your period. You don't have to embarrass yourself like that." She was saying I embarrassed myself by telling her I'm on my period to get a pad while others were around. Screw you, school

Honestly I feel like it's an American thing because I live in Germany and I can ask casually and get asked casually for tampons atleast from girl's. A lot of boys still feel really uncomfortable with the topic but atleast 80% of women are totally fine with it. Like asking another girl at the club and getting an empathetic smile while she hands you a tampon that's pretty much normal here. Unless you have extremely immature friend's atleast. And I even now a couple of guys who are fine with talking about period. Might not be their favorite topic but they don't start to freak if they even hear the word like it's voldemort 😂

This isn't just a couple guys not enjoying talking about periods, this is most girls being raised to never talk about their period or let on to anyone that you had it. I'm off the opinion that people have a right to complain about that

I think she said "no, dead-- deadass" (like a stutter). deadass means seriously or literally. Like instead of "she seriously said that to me" you could say "she deadass said that to me". Its usually used with a negative connotation (so the "she" in the above example would have likely said something rude to the speaker)

"I'm on my life" = "Im on my period."
    "Bread" = "Pad"
    "String cheese." = "Tampon"
And now kids in a grade below us are even using it, because we're to afraid to get laughed at by boys.
