  • Here's my review of the Lumix 25mm 1.4 Leica lens. It's a beast, but it isn't perfect. The Lumix 25mm f1.4 is a great, fast, prime lens for the micro four thirds system. Here are my thoughts!

    I had to buy this lens myself for the f/1.4. Most people discount it because of how good the f/1.7 version is, but you just cant make up for that aperture when you need it. The size and weight make this lens a gem to carry around with f/1.4 on tap

    Just discovered your channel and enjoyed this review of what is also possibly my favourite M43 lens to date. I was lucky enough to score mine second hand at a good price when I was first starting out a year or so ago. So glad I did. It's such a gem of a lens. Great for low light, portraits, and wandering around/street photography. Look forward to enjoying more of your excellent videos. Thanks!

    Really enjoying your videos! I received a GX85 (stateside) last Christmas and it's represented a renewed interest in my photography life. It's so small that I feel encouraged and enthused to take it everywhere with me, versus my older and bulkier Nikon DSLR. Aside from the kit lenses that came with the GX85, I also have the 20mm 1.7 and for the price, it's been wonderful. It's my go-to lens these days and has been really enjoyable. Thanks again for all your great GX80 videos and such!

    I had it, but it has a very noisy aperture on Olympus bodies, and it is not as "Leica-like" as I would have liked - as a Leica M user (and this might have been part of my disappointment). I had the Olympus Pro 25 mm 1.2 for a test, and I personally find it to be a greater value for the money (even though quite expensive for an MFT lens). It all depends on preferences, I guess.

    • @dunsunyt
      @dunsunyt 6 лет назад

      Yes aperture is a bit noisy but you can get rid of it if you turn off antiflickr in Olympus menu. I'm an exact oposite guy I had Oly 25mm 1.2 as well. Yes it's a bit sharper and bokeh is milky smooth I did not like that lens for its price and mainly for its weigh and size. I shoot m43 for weigt/size reasons. If I really wanted to get that FF look I would rather get a FF camera + any of its nifty fifty fast lenses.

    I’m late to the party and never gave much thought to prime lenses because I was too lazy to walk back and forwards to frame the shot. Then I bought the Leica 12mm and now primes have blown my tiny little mind.
    I’m now seriously thinking of getting a 25mm lens but I can’t decide on this lens or the Leica version. Seeing as they are both reasonably priced second hand on MPB, would you still go for the Panasonic, or would you pay the extra for the Leica version?
    The Leica, second hand, is less than what you paid all those years ago.

    • @MicroFourNerds

      This is the Leica version, the f1.4. It’s my fave!!!! Well worth the money. I believe there’s a mkii out now that is weather sealed, this is the mki which is why it might look different

    The heart was all for the PL25/1.4, but the head only allowed for the P25/1.7. Honestly, 2/3 of a stop don't change my life (I'm not a pro) but paying 300% more would. Anyhow, as a substitute, the lesser brother is a solid performer too. Bokeh is a bit harsh, and there's a focus shift zone between f/2 and f/4 that requires a bit of MF correction. At least build quality is in line with the price point ;-)

How far back was your camera when you filmed this video? Were you able to reach forward and touch the screen? If not, can you recommend a good piece-to-camera lens that won't break the bank?

    Ok, this is bit weird... I ordered Summilux 25mm F1.4... (I also love sharp center and nice vignetting on the edges) Its on its way already... When Matti Sulanto makes an announcement that there is available Mark II... Apparently local shop in Bratislava for PRO photographers did not got the memo yet. :)

    Love this lens, it was one of two lenses (along with the Olympus 60mm F2.8 Macro) I wanted before I even bought my first MFT camera (returning to photography after over a decade of being away). I now have several lenses and these two are indeed my favourite. However, I don't actually seem to use the 50mm "standard" that often whereas the Macro I've used loads. But it still amazes me when I use this lens, even when taking pictures of mundane things, I need to make an effort to use it more.
    Love the channel keep posting these great videos :-)

    OPINIONS NEEDED! Thank you for this review. I just bought a GH5 and have no lenses yet. I love shooting night street video. I'm considering this Leica 25mm 1.4 ....or the new Olympus 25mm 1.2 ....or getting the Metabones booster and a full frame prime at like 1.4 which SHOULD give best night time performance. Price isn't too much of a concern. THANK YOU!

    • @MicroFourNerds
      @MicroFourNerds  6 лет назад

      Vagabond-Dogs TV! Hopefully others can add their opinions below too! Personally, if money (and size) were no option, i'd be swayed by the Olympus 1.2 or the metabones adapted. I've recently loaned 2 different f1.2 lenses (the 42.5mm and the 12mm Panasonic) and the 1.2 does make a difference even over 1.4. Perhaps you could rent the lenses first to decide for yourself? I rented mine from a company called Lens Pimp in the UK (great name haha) which was very affordable. I'm sure there are other alternatives 😊

    • @ted_nemeth
      @ted_nemeth 6 лет назад

      Thank you! I'm tempted to go the speed booster route because a f1.2 lens would equal like f1.8 roughly with the Metabones factor. Where as a M43 native at 1.2 equals f2.4. ......All this since night video is important to me. Anyone with the Lumix body have any experience with this?

    Subbed because I just got my gh5 not too long ago. I currently have the 25mm 1.7, should the 1.4 be better or is it better to upgrade from? Ive seen a few for about 150 new on ebay for this one.

    • @MicroFourNerds
      @MicroFourNerds  5 лет назад +1

      I do prefer the 1.4, it really is great in low light and sharp for days! It really depends on your budget whether it’s worth upgrading to because it is significantly more expensive for maybe a couple of perfect improvement

    Tanks and keep these coming. Don't worry about the fisheye - I have a (Samyang) one and it sits in the bag a lot of the year. Then I go on holiday and in tight spots (inside buildings etc.) or when wanting a low down, really wide shot - it comes out again.

    This lens (as well as the 35-100 f2.8 & 100-400) is partly why I sold my Sony and Nikon gear. I can have instant AF and sweet bokeh but still carry 3 or 4 lenses anywhere. Another thing is that there is still plenty of room to crop or downsize for most professional digital output. First thing the designers would do when getting 40+mp images is downsize them.

    Just got one, and the image quality really is amazing. That said, on my GX9, the aperture blades sound like someone running a cheese grater over corrugated iron. Bigger glass, brighter and OIS compared to this one. Also love to see your thoughts on the 14-140mm zoom and the G85, which is very similar to the GX85 but in a compact DLSR body with a few extras like a fully articulating screen, weather sealing, mic jack etc.

    Is it worth it to buy this lens in 2018? I mean it released 7 years ago - does that even matter for lenses? I'm new in photography and bought the Panasonic gx9 with the lumix G Vario 12-32mm kit lens. I love the m43 system because of their size. +Andreas Huber I don't think lens age matters too much, especially with prime lenses as they're relatively simple construction. The 1.7 will be wonderful for you and a huge step up from the kit lens. The 1.4 IS bloody brilliant, but stupidly more expensive compared to the 1.7 so it really depends on how much you'd like to spend

    Thx for the lens review, the lens is so expensive because of the Leica logo (its not Lumix actually, but Leica design).

      Ulf Jönsson completely agree it's a survivor from the dawn of M43, I think if it was newer a lot of the build would be better ( and weather sealed). A lot of photos, I revisit and go, 'Cor that's nice!' were taken with this lens. Though the lens hood is particularly annoying. The Leica design ethic I guess
      I've tried the Olympus f1.2 pro, which I don't like as much ( but is better in the rain ).

    I don't own a single lens (I think) that isn't second hand. I picked this lens up from ebay last year for $380 US. At that price point, it's been an incredible value. I don't think I'll be leaving MFT anytime soon. I hear you on weather sealing, BUT I think you need to consider when this lens was first produced (2011 and still holding its own!!!). Weather sealing wasn't as big of a thing (if a thing at all) on all lenses/gear back then. Think about the G-series bodies...no weather sealing until G85. Now ALL G-series are weather sealed forevermore. Most Panny version 2 lenses now are also weather sealed, including the 100-300 which isn't a "pro" lens at all. It's just one of those things that's become standard after years of iteration and innovation push price points down for high-end features. Happens with all technology, right? Now, if they update this lens and don't include weather sealing, I'll be joining that protest line with you.

      On a lumix body They're both about the same until you get to lower light, then olympus lenses in general struggle a bit in my experience. I think it's down to mixing the brands rather than any problem with the lens tho. On an olympus body forget focusing in low light at all for video haha

  • @JeanClaudeBalzac
    @JeanClaudeBalzac 6 лет назад +2

    It was the first fixed focal length lens I bought for m43, and it made me fall in love with the Leica design/branded Lumix lenses, so after that I couldn’t resist buying the 15mm f1.7 and the highly praised 42.5mm f1.2. of those last two i like the design better, they have that beautiful Leica quality feel and design to them that lacks the 25mm. But it is still my most used lens. I hope that one day they make a 25mm f1.2 or 1.0 in that same design. Compared to the almost perfect Olympus lenses i think the Leica/Lumix lenses have a more character, and i love that!

    Finally bit the bullet and bought one on the strength of your review and the comments my earlier comment received. Very sharp and takes lovely pictures but it really is plastic, it looks just like any other other 'ordinary' Panasonic lens till you take the lens cap off and see the word Leica. I've got to say I'm disappointed by how bad the CAs are wide open and they don't go away till f2.8. I know they're widely reported and you can fix them in LightRoom but they are still bad for a premium lens. I like it, and will definitely be keeping it, but my 15mm f1.7 beats it all round, that not only takes lovely pics, it looks and feels like a premium product as well.

    I like this lens, it gives a nice rendering, but I have noticed very bad CA in some situations. I also wish Panasonic would update it to match the build, look, aperture ring and lack of CA of the newer 12, 15, and 42.5 Leica branded lenses, but I guess then the price would increase substantially as well.

      I really like mine as well, but I completely agree with you on the Chromatic aberration. It can be really bad and easily ruin photos for instance if there is a strong back light.

    @patrickwhitehead 6 лет назад

    Was considering getting one as I've recently aquired the 15mm 1.7 which I love (probably my favourite lens) but hadn't realised the 25 was plastic. The 15mm is all metal, even the lens hood, and is a thing of beauty. I note you also make no reference to 'Leica rendering' - my 15mm certainly has it and if the 25mm hasn't then that's another reason not to move from my 'plastic fantastic' Pana 25mm f1.7 which is okay, but very, very plastic. At least that was cheap and it is quite sharp.

      I have owned all 25mm m43 lenses including Oly 25mm 1.8 and 1.2. All are sold now except Leica 25mm 1.4 which is definitely worth it ! It does render colors in a different way (more contrasty colors) than any Olympus lens does and its bokeh is very organic and unique. The only downside is its AF accuracy on Olympus cameras. But it is a thing of the camera not the lens.
