What a gift! Anytime Ralph is interviewed, or writes a piece about his work, I feel so lucky to have access to it. His explanations of WHY and HOW things were done are so satisfying to hear, after years of pondering. He remembers everything, and is always so gracious about pointing out Jerry Finnerman's genius as a cinematographer. Ralph is the best example of what classic television was, at its pinnacle. "Metamorphosis" is Star Trek's finest, and if you want to see a masterclass in how to direct episodic television, watch The Waltons episode "The Pony Cart". He is a treasure.
Ralph hailed from Mason City, Iowa. Also the hometown of composer Meredith Willson who write The Music Man. Thirty miles from where my Mom grew up.
Ralph is a living legend
