Team event should be scheduled after the individual competition. In that way, athletes may have higher spirit to participate in the team event, particularly those unlucky in the individuals, team event gives them a chance to redeem themselves in a way.
I absolutely agree! I think it’s really unreasonable to require the athletes to compete for the team before their own event. If they get injured competing for the team, it could remove their ability to complete their primary objective, which is to compete in their own event.
I think in some ways they want it to become similar to gymnastics in that the team competition is most sentimentally important and comes first, both in chronology and in priority....? I don't necessarily agree but it is an interesting concept....
@@michelledegeorge5708 That must be the ISU’s reason. But I would argue that just because water polo plays with a ball, then we can teach how to play basket ball in a pool. Skating requires skates and ice while gym requires bear feet and a floor.
Don’t know if Adam is going as Mariah’s coach (remember something about a one-coach only thing), but maybe we won’t see anybody with a preposterous tacky outfit with a gazillion logos in the kiss and cry.
The exitement living up to the olympics while watching This and That every week just keeps on building! (I was even watching old episodes in between last Sunday and this video) I'm so hyped up for the olympics thanks to you guys! Hope it will all be wonderfull! ♡♡♡
Part of me wonders if Nikita will have a Plushenko moment where he delivers in the team event and then has back issues in the individual and either underperforms or have to pull out. Back issues make me nervous in big competitions… 😬
I think with it being Moskvina's last Olympics, she's going to do everything possible to make sure Mishina & Galliamov are as perfectly polished as possible. She wants to go out with a bang and they're her final swan song.
Did she say she is going to retire as a coach? However this is Sui and Hans last Olympics and they are worlds above both moskvina teams so if they skate clean, no matter what, moskvinas teams should not beat Sui and Han, as much as I admire her, her teams are not to the level of a clean Sui and han
Great show! Such an exciting week! It’s awful to say but, after watching The Edge, I’m kind of not so excited for Hubbel and Donohue as I was before. I don’t know if it’s because the Papadakis-Cizeron’s situation. She was kind of rude towards them. Although I think it’s just the way she talks. I mean, she seems to be a very honest person, that friend that says what we need to hear. But also what I took from it, it’s that they think they only have the French as opponents. They don’t even consider Chock and Bates. This just rings such a bad vibe, bad energy to me. And I agree that Chock and Bates can be ahead of them at the Olympics as they were at Nationals. Well, we’ll soon find out! Good Olympics to everyone ❤️
It's not awful, her remarks were classless and rude, not just towards P/C but in relation to all their training mates. She's tone deaf, and her assuredness that she should be closer to P/C is laughable. If I was Gabby and heard my "friend" speaking about me in such a manner in a public forum, I'd never talk to her again. I think MFD should have taken it upon herself to silence Hubbell or dismiss her from the rink.
@@thesupremediva Yes, Meghan. I agree with you. I'd never talk to her again if I was Gabby. I said awful because I was just not comfortable about judging her based on a show that could be edited in certain way but, at the end, she said those things.
I think your gut feeling about Chock/Bates is right, Dave. At NHK the judges had them so close to the Russians in the short, and gave them almost 125 with a fall in the free. Meanwhile, Hubbell/Donahue can’t break 126 with strong skates. I guess we’ll see what shakes out! 🤷🏼♀️
I think it helps that C/B free dance is different than the other top 6 teams. They all went slow and romantic or classical, and love or hate C/B alien program, at least it’s out of the box.
I didn't want to believe that there's a possibility Wakaba could be excluded from the team event, but now that you mention it, making Kaori do both the SP and FS would be the most JSF thing
Wakaba doing 3A in SP is better bet. Kaori relies completely on friendly judging with her content. Young You or Leona could beat her depending on the judges.
@@joeyartkSouth Korea and Belgium aren't doing the team event. Unlike Pyeongchang where Canada had Kaetlyn & Gabby and Italy had Carolina, it won't be as hard for Japan to earn 9 points in the SP and FS regardless of how they use Wakaba, which is why I'd be really upset if they exclude her
Honestly, as hard as it is to make a confident decision with this guy since you never know what he pulls off and thinks (he definitely doesn't listen to his coaches at this point, which is understandable as he can pretty much coach himself with the amount of experience he has, but sometimes this fact is concerning), I believe that Yuzuru will go for the 4A, even if that meant losing the gold - to me, he seems like extremely stubborn and determined human-being and this 4A obsession of his has been going for so long. Add this to the fact that he has already won the Olympics twice, winning it three times would be amazing for everyone, including him of course, but he already has two gold Olympic medals at home and I believe that since his "relationship" with Nathan is on the friendly and full-on respect side, he would be pleased if Nathan was awarded for his performance and talent - if they were literal rivals on and off ice, it would be another story. If he never won Olympics before, of course, he would go for the safer choice and not do the 4A, but this is very likely his last Olympics (as I don't believe he will still be around to compete at 31 during the next Olympics) and there will never be a more legendary event to jump the 4A at - the whole world is watching this unlike the Worlds and other competitions during the season. Even if he didn't end up with the gold around his neck, he would still be known as the guy who jumped the 4A or at least attempted to do so and that is also a massive accomplishment. Plus Fanyus and the Chinese fans and media, who absolutely adore this guy, would probably make a way bigger sensation of it than Nathan's win.
Yuzu was the underdog coming into the 2014 and 2018 olympics.... I said before, I think the 4A is primarily propaganda. He's making noise like only he can, people are talking about him, judges are probably watching him closely and probably impressed he pulled a clean program full of quads and full of transitions after that. But I have no doubt he wants to win that 3rd OGM and he'll be strategic. I think he'll probably not jump the 4A at the olys. And I also think he'll be back next season just to land it in competition, and then land all quads in one program. Totally Hanyu goals. LOL
Or maybe go to worlds and try the 4A there. He actually publicly said he changed his perspective on the Olympics because winning before seemed unrealistic
If he has one of those magical Yuzu performances, where you can hear a pin drop, I think he can win with his PCS. I want Nathan to win, but he hasn't improved his PCS in the last 4 years.
I don’t know what he’ll actually do in the FS if he’s contending for gold after the SP, but I have no doubt that this 4A obsession is his way of compartmentalizing and protecting himself against the pressure/narrative of being expected to win a 3rd OGM. I hope he’s at least been practicing layouts with the 4Lo in it instead of the 4A so he can go for it if needed
Dear Dave and Jonathan (and all lovely people here 😊), could you please rally for the team event to be held AFTER the individuals? I remember you mention that in the past and it makes so much more sense stamina-wise, and for psychological reasons…?
I dunno with other sports that have this team event format, but artistic gymnastic also does team event first then individual. The peak event is individual and you wouldn't want to put your best first, otherwise TE would not have enough viewers. From the athletes perspective, individual events first is a no brainer.
My heart just bleeds for the amount of pressure Nathan must feel. I don't know how anyone handles pressure like that. My wish for him is two perfect programs and a gold medal, but more than that I just hope that he feels good after both programs and that he did all he could under the circumstances. I'd love to see EVERYONE skate their very best and then watch the politics give the scores.
I sincerely hope he got a sport psychiatrist for this Olympic because of what happen in 2018. While a lot can say u can move on, something the past ghost won’t leave u alone and when u doubt even for a second, it can make a gold place finish to fifth place
I think who skates the team event for the Japanese men is entirely up to Yuzuru. If he says he wants the SP, then I think Yuma gets the FS (Shoma is dealing with an ankle injury so I don't see him skating the FS in the team event). If Yuzu wants to skate the FS then I think Shoma gets the SP (he's been more consistent in the short than Yuma this season). If Yuzu decides he doesn't want to skate the team event then I think it will be Shoma in the SP and Yuma in the FS. I definitely don't see any of the Japanese men skating both programs in the team event. I think the American team could try to arrange to have their men skate based off of who is skating for Japan. So if Yuzuru skates the SP, then Nathan skates the SP. If Yuzu skates the FS, then Nathan skates the FS. Vincent would skate against Shoma or Yuma. With that said, I don't think that's what Team USA will do. I think Nathan will skate the SP no matter what and Vincent will skate the FS. I think Nathan having injury problems will definitely keep him from skating two FS at the Games.
Long time viewer & fan of your channel/& socials. Thank you so much for your input each week. I really enjoy & look forward to your educated opinions. It's going to be a super fun February & I'll look forward to your insights :)
I agree with all the teams, the only thing I think they'll have S/B share the TE with S/K. I think Nikita's back is that bad, and Rusfed still wants that OGM in the individual event. I hope JSF adds Wakaba in the TE!! She'll be ahead of the Americans and the Canadians for sure. I wonder if JSF will add Yuma instead of Shoma, I've never seen JSF behind a skater like they are behind Shoma. Idk. And Canada is such a mess, I'm feeling very confident Japan will get a medal. What remains to be seen is whether it'll be bronze or silver. No offense to the Americans, but I'm rooting for Japan silver! :-)
I’m worried about Sui/Han, if they lose gold again at home Olympics, it will be devastating. And I’ve seen the video of Boyang training his 4Lz at the Beijing rink and it’s so beautiful and I just want a good skate for him🙏🏻 Also it’s so unreal to see photos and videos from the Olympics rink, I can’t believe the Olympics are already here✨
I'm very worried about Sui/Han, considering the scoring in the Euros 2022 where all records were broken. They cannot make any mistakes at all because the other teams are scored like they're head to head in quality. The only team that I believe is on par in quality is only T/M but you know what happened with FS, all 3 Russians look like they can beat S/H
@@yohanes2034 it’s so disgusting honestly, I agree the only team who COULD beat them is T/M. They are the best Russian pair right now by a mile. If they were consistent, the federation would give a shit about M/G but because T/M are such mess ups and cannot be trusted, they had to turn to their second best team and over score them to high heavens. If it was scored fairly, and both sui and Han and M/G put out clean skates, sui and Han should be ahead by a mile. But unfortunately this is figure skating
@@toxic-low-key-ghost7934 yes even if S/H have stepout or even fall from sbs 3S, they should lead just because M/G PCS is far too generous. Also who was petitioning to reduce BV of 4twist and 4thr? --> Rusfed. The same fed who argue that women should be allowed to jump quads in the SP said 4twist and 4thr are dangerous hence BV should be reduced (to discourage pairs and reduce injuries). The hypocrite of them all
@@yohanes2034 it’s so sad because they should be worlds ahead in terms of pcs, M/G free program is just… meh. Cool tricks but pcs wise it’s meh. Sui and Han are literally magical and I say this as quite a fan of Russian pairs skaters. Last Olympics, the pairs were judged fairly, in my opinion. Sui and Han had many mistakes in the free and they came second where I think they should have, S/M fairly won. But my gosh these Olympics, Russia is just being greedy as hell, especially in dance, thinking that Nikita and his terrible twizzles can seriously beat the French. And what a coincidence. I am sick of this hypocrisy. When it comes to the women, not allowing quads in the short is discrimination and stopping development of the sport. But in pairs it’s too dangerous. Funny how they weren’t petitioning for the BV to be reduced when T/M were doing the quad twist back in 2018
I'm surprised Alysa isn't more in the conversation for the Team Event. It seems she's been shrouded in mystery since the last minute coaching change. Ethically, the pairs choice should be based on international scores. Knierim & Frazier have the record high by a US pair by quite a few points. Cain-Gribble & LeDuc have one score that was close to one of K/F's GP scores, but other than that, K/F have had substantially superior scores this year. Ashley and Tim's scores are more in the territory of Calalang & Johnson's.
The problem with Alysa is the constant coaching changes. It's kind of reminiscent of Nicole Bobek with all the coaching changes and drama. Her father Arthur is also the problem--he is a true stage parent from hell like Tiffany Chin's mother Marjorie. Our team can't afford inconsistency or mistakes.
The fact Kolyada will not be there is just sooo sudden and random. I don't get it. I get he is positive but no one seems to care. Does anyone remember those amazing FS performances from the last year?
Why isn’t the team event held after the individual medals? Waiting would stress me out to no end… I really admire their ability to keep it together & look happy …. I’m a mess just thinking about that
I hope Yuma does the team event fs because he recently said in an interview that he wants to do 4Lo at the Olympics and this would provide an opportunity for him to land it in competition before the individual event. Otherwise I think it's really risky to attempt it in the individual event when he hasn't attempted it in competition since the early fall and he landed it with step-outs.
@@christinethorp3684 Because if he falls on it, it could be the difference between him being on or off the podium. It could even throw off the rest of his program. Would you attempt a jump you've never landed with positive GOE before when you could still win an Olympic medal without it? The only reason for him to add the 4Lo to his program is so he has a chance at gold.
The two dance teams both deserve a team medal more than the two women do. I understand the reasoning for not splitting dance, but it's practically a guaranteed medal for both teams. Even if G/P beat them in the team event, they still both have an Olympic medal, while if they just put in one team, that team gets a medal but both teams could still lose to G/P in the individual .
I really hope they split the dance instead of women's singles. The dance teams are both a t the caliber where they've earned a medal, such as qualifying for the grand prix. Neither Mariah nor Karen was able to do that, or even come close... I like both ladies as people but they haven't earned it. The politics are unfair; no coach is entitled to a medal for the skater if their skater hasn't earned it...
I think the Team Event can ruin your individual performance. We've seen it happen too often in all disciplines since Sochi, starting with Julia Lipnitskaya. I also think of Marchei/Hotarek in Pyeongchang.
@@julesc3089 USA isn't an underdog at all. Almost secured silver medal. In case some troubles with Russian team like Covid or Nikitas back it could turn into gold. The underdog in this event is Canada.
There is little to no excitement with these games for me - we know who’s winning in the womens and ice dance and amongst the men it’s either Hanyun or Chen and either S/H or M/G.
I would not use Jason for the Team Event. I think in the long with only five makes sense to just use Vincent. I think short far to many can defeat him. I read somewhere that the Russian girls are being kept very carefully. Own rooms.
If Eteri wanted to max out medals she would have Anna and Sasha in the team event along with T/M. Imagine having 3 gold olympic medals in ladies, i dont think that would happen tho!
I think Eteri and Rusfed want that double Olympic champion they're chasing since Sochi. I think if 2018 Team Event went well(or at least Misha held it together), and Zagitova would've been double champion, considering splitting the medals even more wouldn't be so out of the question.
There will be live audience in that rink. Beijing organizer will not publicly sell event tickets but will send “invitations” to certain communities that work for the state-own enterprises.
@@JohnnyOpera1 It was originally open to Chinese-only audience but now it's only random people invited, so it will be a much smaller group (definitely not full rink) and who may not be figure skating fans. :(
Ugh, I hope that the U.S. gives both dance teams slots on the team event. They both deserve Olympic medals, while frankly neither Mariah nor Karen does.
The IAM teams are all going separately from the rest of the team so I’m not worried about Keegan, he had such drama getting to nationals, he’s probably better off going from Alaska or nearby Vancouver.
skate canada didn't gamble when they didnt put in weaver and poje in 2018 when they couldve had a medal but they put virtue/moir in for both. but i think that was more for v/m's benefit than anything
From Meagan interview, she said that Skate Canada meant to put Weaver/ Poje if they know for sure that team canada would get the gold. They didn't gamble and put V/M, later they found out without V/M getting 1st in the FD they would still get the gold regardless, but they couldn't switch the team cause it's too late.
I'm pretty sure Shcherbakova will get the greater amount of politicking to get into the team event. Her loyalty to Eteri must account to something, right? Right? *insert that Natalie Portman Star Wars meme* I do prefer Sasha to get the LP segment because her LP has that viral potential...but it only works when she hits everything and is not injured. Sooo I do get why Anna would get that LP segment. Anyway, I prefer B/K to get the LP segment over T/M. It's a pity that the latter is getting it because of politics.
Thanks for such a great preview! I’m really excited to see what happens and I hope C&B can pull off a silver, that would be great. I hope they surprise us all and bring back the snake dance! The team event is going to be the tensest one yet.
It's never been a good thing to bring back an old programme in dance.Dont think they'd do it at this late stage. The programmes need to he polished at the peak for olympics.
The last few episodes of on edge really got me worried about P/C. While S/K are getting the momentum from winning euros Marie-France is just letting her own skaters run a campaign against her only real contenders for the gold. Without the gp final to make a clear comparison between the french and the russians, Hubbell's attempts to drag down the French only serve to aid the Russians in politicking their way to a win
@@lyragill3395 I still think they can pull through, remember they took the entire 2020 season off and missed 2021 worlds then came back stronger than ever with their new programs. You can’t count them out. Plus, Nikita and his horrendous twizzles should not be even thinking of getting Olympic gold against the French. It’s sui and Han that I’m most worried about since m/g are being overscored to high heavens in an attempt to show they are a worthy challenge of the Chinese when really, they are the second best Russian pair in terms of skating. The only Russian pair who should be challengers of the Chinese are tarasova and morozov but they can never pull it together so….
THANK YOU. It's a crime that MFD has let such a false, damaging narrative play out for that tacky series and hurt P/C's reputation. Never one word about their ACTUAL world titles or the fact that P/C are going for Gold. Geez, we had Scott Moir of all people paying them huge compliments. Meanwhile, Hubbel seems to think she deserves to beat them. ::Eyeroll::
Great show! Will you guys being doing one after every event, like after the Men's Free, Ladies' Free, etc... or will you guys recap each short program to?
I have this sinking feeling that politics and underhanded judging will mean that only one out of Sui/Han and P/C will come away with the gold. But with Sui/Han having a home Olympics the favour for gold is theirs so it might mean ice dance is even shadier than usual. But then pairs is also last, which throws things out a bit. I hope I'm wrong but some of the names on that list of officials isn't really easing my doubts.
Dont agree with the opinion that the team event should be after the induvial event. In this case the athletes who already received a medal in the individual event would not be so motivated. And from event in which participate top athletes from each country it will turn into secondary event.
I would just like to say, yes 100% the world is more tolerant of Eteri than Daniil. Eteri may be terrifying and debatably unethical, depending on your opinions, but at least the woman knows how to package and politic AF for her skaters. Dani is just as unethical but somehow more annoying lol
Annoying, smug, a manchild, etc. while does not have a talent to back it up. I think most of my negativity towards ET skaters could be traced back to him. I mean a lot of fans have been saying about what if (insert ET skater name here) has better choreo and program then the pcs would be more deserved (or something like that)
His “choreography” is so weak. There are so many amazing choreographers in Russia! But, the best women skaters ever in the world are stuck with him, even for their exhibitions!
@@SunflowerCat333 , don't agree, i enjoy watching some of his works like Olympics ''Karenina'' and ''Black Swan'' are, Alyona's ''Departure'' and even Anya's LP '' The Master and Margarita'', Alina's ''Cleopatra'' program was also good and Kamilla's ''Girl on the Ball'', inspired by Picasso's work, was great idea. Ok, 1000 ppl= 1000 different opinions, but ppl ( mostly outside of Russia) don't like him, maybe U ( they) don't like Russian's literature, but ''Karenina'' and Anya's ''Master and Margarita'' inspired me and my students to compare Evgenia's ( ''Karenina'') and Anya's ( ''The Master and Margarita'') dance on ice sequences with Tolstoy's and Bulgakov's novels sequences.
What stands behind Meaghan's words about team Canada- does she mean that Canadian federation does not believe that their team has chance to qualify among top 5 teams or in best case to take the bronze? And this is one of the reason why Keegan is not in Beijing yet.
Definitely the best part of the week, and the episodes I missed, I saved to email. Now how will I be able to watch it, with all the other things going on in my life (I have a 91 year old Aunt Yonia, living in an assisted living facility. She is my only living relative, 4 years ago, were able to watch it together. Sharon
Ladies Short Program: who will land their triple axel? Because it comes down to this. Valieva, Wakaba, Kawabe, Shabatova, You, Liu, Trusova (am I missing anyone?) must land their 3A's. It is such a high risk jump, but miss it, you are not in the top group for the fs. Make it, you are.
I would’ve loved to see Shoma in the TE, I think bw him and Yuma it wouldn’t really make a different placement wise and I would’ve loved to see Shoma get a medal along with Yuzuru and team JPN. I also get the feeling Yuma would do well I’m the individual anyway. But from reports it seems Shoma is staying in JPN for a few more days to heal his ankle injury and probs won’t make it :(
I think they'll put Anna in the team event. She's the reigning world champion, a 3x national champion, and has beaten Trusova every time in their senior career. I feel like everyone gets so caught up in what Trusova can possibly do instead of looking at what she actually has done. She hasn't won any major competitions as a senior, only bronze. She's a very nervous skater, she doesn't skate clean very often. If you had to pick who to give it to based on what they've achieved so far, Anna has earned that spot.
Um...Sasha beat Anna at the most recent Russian Nationals which is arguably the most important competition of the season because the first two places are guaranteed the spots at Olympics. Furthermore...."if you had to pick who to give it to based on what they've achieved so far..", I would pick Sasha because she literally revolutionized the sport. World Champions, Olympic Champions, they all come and go. There will always be another Olympic and World champion. However, no one will every be able to do what Sasha did. First woman to land a quad since 2002. First woman to land a truly rotated 4S, 4T, 4Lz, 4F, first woman to land 2 quads in a program, first woman to land quad in combination, first woman to land 3 quads in program (then 4 and 5 at Japan Open and Test Skates), first woman to backload a quad in combination, first woman to land more than one quad at Worlds, etc. The list goes on......the contribution Sasha has made to the ladies figure skating sport is irreplaceable.... Not to mention the fact that as of now, in 2022, Sasha is still the only lady in the entire world and history to be competing with 4 quads and attempting more than 3 quad skates. I love Anna and she's actually my favorite but the way you phrased this comment is so undermining and diminishing of what Sasha did to this sport as a whole. Put Sasha or Anna in, it doesn't matter, because either girls will definitely beat the rest. It's really not about "strategy" when choosing between the two and I believe that the honor to be the first woman to land a quad at the Olympics should go to Sasha... Not only has she actually been more consistent than Anna this season, with her only failing Euros and US Classics, while Anna has either failed the short or free at ALL of her competitions this season, she did solidify her spot on the team with her second place finish at Russian Nationals, which is again, arguably the most important competition of the quad.
Completely agree with you! No matter which girl they put on TE they still going to win gold so I think they will based on her trajectory and Anna has won a lot this years
Yeah, because Anna is overscored every single time? To be fair, they should just put Liza in the sp, Valieva in the fp. They have been reliable this season.
And Anna is skating clean this season? 😂😂 They should put Sasha and Liza for the team, but since Russian federation seems to hate the Empress, I hope they go with Sasha and Kamila.
I hope what you predicted is indeed the US team! Just to clarify, Alexa and Brandon have a Season’s Best 10 points higher than Cain and LeDuc. Senior Bs are ISU competitions but not included on their season’s best lists for some reason. K/F also have a much higher average and median score this season than C/L in both programs and also defeated them at Worlds. K/F have consistently had the best scores and likely the best scoring potential.
My prediction.. Men Shoma unexpected Gold Sherbakova off the podium sui-han scandalous gold France wins the dance 😗☕️.... i also have a feeling if Hanyu falls on 4A he might be off the podium😥 ( especially if all men preform clean programs)
You clearly have no idea who Sui and Han are to say that any medal they win are scandalous, unless you're one of those crazy Russians who keep saying Adelina Sotnikova deserved that gold 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
I agree that it looks like they will put Chock and Bates for both, the momentum is with them. Which will really suck for HD, Pyeongchang all over again :( I don’t know if that’s the best decision strategy-wise either given the effect of team on individual event, I think when it’s head to head it’s easier to put Canadians ahead of Chock and Bates than ahead of HD, the difference in skating skills is just too apparent. But, doesn’t matter if Canada doesn’t get to do the team free I guess…
I'm so excited to watch this. I had a question, though. I know if one of the girls from ROC get sidelined for whatever reason, the alternate(Liza) would be brought in. However, let's say Trusova aggravates her injury in the team event and can't skate in the individual ladies. If she drops out, can they bring in Liza for the individual?
Yes as long as she does if BEFORE the individual short program starts. The reason Kovtun couldn't replace Evgeni Plushenko in 2014 was because Plushenko pulled out during the SP warm up.
It’s really kind of you to think that Trusova will ever accept not to participate at the Olympics individual event. She performed at Skate America while her injury was fresh, there is no way she will ever give up on Olympics. Maybe if she breaks her leg to the point that she can’t walk on her own.. only then :D
I just don’t see that weird alien program being medal worthy for ice dance. That said, it’s ice dance, and many of these judges have lived through and internalized that trashy era of post-Torville/Dean pre-Zoueva ice dance (as described in the meddling video y’all did). If they could give Domnina/Shabilin a bronze after those two messes of a programs (CD aside), anything could happen
Hanyu doesn't have the TES to win, 4A or no 4A. Yuma? No. the judges will hold him back on PCS because he is just up from juniors. Vincent is unlikely to repeat Skate America and even if he did, he wouldn't beat a clean Nathan. Nathan has only lost one competition in the last four years and it was just a preliminary Grand Prix event. I wouldn't bet against him.
If Nathan and Yuzu receives the right GOE for their jumps, spins and choreo the advantage Nathan has in B.V won't matter. But, the last 4 years proved that judges don't care. I just want everyone to skate clean and be rewarded properly.
The Russian ladies could very well sweep the podium, or they could go 1-2, with either Japan (Wakaba or Kaori) or even South Korea getting in 3rd (though, You Young's 3A is inconsistent). I agree with your lists, guys. Everyone is happy to see Yuzuru Hanyu going to Beijing; the question is, will he be cleared to compete? Will Nathan and the others? Too bad or Mikhail Kolyada. I wanted so much to see his White Crow program. Not sure if Kondratiuk or Mozalev will be able to medal individually, unless Hanyu/Chen/Zhou/Kagiyama make mistakes. I hope Sui/Han are able to win gold; Papadakis/Cizeron should be able to win gold, too, since they went up against S/K before and won. The only sure winner at Beijing 2022 is Valieva. If Trusova can land her quads and quit the 3A, she could get 2nd place, seriously. Scherbakova could fight her for silver, too.
Oh man Dave, when you said that Nathan should go for the flip and lutz in the short I literally yelled NO!!! At my screen. You obviously have a point about him setting himself up well, but I still just think the better strategy would be to just aim for not going into the long 22 points down and in 17th place!! Go for the flip and toe! Great preview, thank you both again. P.S. I think the Chinese will skate clean in the individual. Bet on it. This is China!!! They have lived at that training school since they were children! There are too many expectations and too much pressure ( like tennis player pressure) for them not to. I think those poor people are dead inside at this point and that is why they are going to get it done! But I want it for them so bad at the same time! More than I want Nathan to get the gold! They have been under dogs since they were kids just because of their size, you know?
11:19 at this point, it’s safe to assume Keegan will miss the team event. He’s still to produce two negative tests. That lowers Canada’s chances to reach the podium
@@fionan7311 the criteria should still be to have two entrants but the sport should make that process easier to qualify for . Countries will then have to build up their teams over the years of the quadrennial. Maybe have duel meets in the season so the scores are built up .
I saw Euros where Anna looked tired in short and missed the combo. She magically pulled out the free, at least IMO, but that doesn’t happen usually twice in a row. So if she had one magic free in the team event, I fear it may not go well in individual. Sasha I think will probably miss one or two quads in both and will still score up there.
I find it super confusing Danil G going to the olympics He is just a secondary coach (arguably) and choreographer. I am worried his desire to go to the olympics will cost the Russian ladies medals. I feel empathy/sympathy for Ilia M from the US it is not inconceiveable Jason will get a team medal. From the brink of not going to Beijing to earning a team medal whereas poor Ilia will be watching from afar.
Agree...this olympics for USA athletes...would not be good...the programs, the skating techniques and all components are not on the same level as Rusia, Japan, Korea...so...really difficult olympics for usa team on the female competition.

@Xiangni Bian Totally agree!
I agree, the individual skaters would be fresh and could use all their energies. The team event would be a bit more "fun" and a bit of redemption.
it must be so hard for Dani G to know if he has covid or not. how can he tell when he had no taste to begin with???
Okay, that’s just too good. Bravo 👏 😂
Don’t know if Adam is going as Mariah’s coach (remember something about a one-coach only thing), but maybe we won’t see anybody with a preposterous tacky outfit with a gazillion logos in the kiss and cry.

Good jab, I applaud lol
When Dave talked about how Dani has aged since 2016 I fricking lost it 😂
Chock reposting the team event tv times makes me think you’re right, Dave! That dance bronze medal is going to be so fun to watch.
I still somehow hope for Tuktamysheva to get a chance to participate in the Olympics.
The exitement living up to the olympics while watching This and That every week just keeps on building! (I was even watching old episodes in between last Sunday and this video) I'm so hyped up for the olympics thanks to you guys! Hope it will all be wonderfull! ♡♡♡
Yudzu can do whatever he wants! He's an accomplished athlete, he's not killing his career if things don't go perfectly.
Best way to start the week! Every Sunday with TSL❤️
Glad you enjoy it!
My head says Mishina and Galliamov. My heart says Sui and Han. I am going with my heart.
Agreed on head v heart
Darn, this makes me not want to watch that now, because H&D are my favorite team after P&C and I still want to like them.
What did she said? I'm not into this situation. Thanks
Unlike Pyeongchang where Canada had Kaetlyn & Gabby and Italy had Carolina, it won't be as hard for Japan to earn 9 points in the SP and FS regardless of how they use Wakaba, which is why I'd be really upset if they exclude her
@@blinky7046 Oh ok. Thanks. Yea, I would like her to get a good performances in over that ice before the individual skate.
Watching you two gentlemen is the highlight of my Sunday!!
Glad to hear it!
I don’t think he’s going to do the 4A. It’ll be a deliberate loss and Japan really wants a medal in the individual and team event.
He will absolutely attempt the 4A - in all his interviews he says his goal is to both land the 4A and win the OGM, or rather, win by nailing the 4A
Yuzu was the underdog coming into the 2014 and 2018 olympics....
If he does the SP clean and has a lead, I'd believe his brain would choose over not doing 4A in the FP.
@@jorgebonilla2234 It's a good point!
This is so exciting! I love to hear opinions, and to get immersed in the skating world, much love
@@TheSkatingLesson Hi. Where do you go to see the list of judges?
Dear Dave and Jonathan (and all lovely people here 😊), could you please rally for the team event to be held AFTER the individuals? I remember you mention that in the past and it makes so much more sense stamina-wise, and for psychological reasons…?
We don't have that power.
@@TheSkatingLesson YES, you do! Don’t underestimate your power; Russia is listing to you?!👍
Agreed! Plus, the general audience doesn't always want to watch the same programs twice (unlike big skating fans).
I dunno with other sports that have this team event format, but artistic gymnastic also does team event first then individual. The peak event is individual and you wouldn't want to put your best first, otherwise TE would not have enough viewers. From the athletes perspective, individual events first is a no brainer.
Agree, it would be so much better for the skaters. Plus, that’s how it is done for the Worlds.
I remember coming across this show right after the 2018 Olympics and taught me IJS and I’ve been hooked since:)
❤️❤️🙏
It's nice to talk to fans everyone I know could care less about skating.
I remember coming across this show in early 2013
I came across this show because of gymnastics. I stayed for the Russian drama.
All your predictions sound spot on. It’s def gonna be 1. Kamila 2/3 Sasha/Anna. I really hope Sasha wins tho :) Good luck to everyone!
Same! Team Sasha all the way! :)
And I’ve seen the video of Boyang training his 4Lz at the Beijing rink and it’s so beautiful and I just want a good skate for him🙏🏻
Also it’s so unreal to see photos and videos from the Olympics rink, I can’t believe the Olympics are already here✨
I'm very worried about Sui/Han, considering the scoring in the Euros 2022 where all records were broken.
Funny how they weren’t petitioning for the BV to be reduced when T/M were doing the quad twist back in 2018
Sui/han may lose the gold because of the rediculous PCS judging. The ISU does not want the skaters to be judged from the Artistic side
So sad.
I think they’re still punishing him for bombing in 2018 😕
@@almourie they definitely do, it’s ridiculous, their the best artistic skater these days
Yuma really has nothing to lose, though. Why wouldn't he just go for the quad loop?
"How many triples do you believe that Stevie Wonder thinks that Karen rotated at the nationals?" BAH WAHH HAHAHA!!!!!!🤣 LMAO!!!!!!
Madison doing the Skims ad is Olympic medal worthy.
Let’s see which teams test positive and how the placements happen.
Love the smiles on both of your faces - this is so exciting!!
I think the Team Event can ruin your individual performance. We've seen it happen too often in all disciplines since Sochi, starting with Julia Lipnitskaya. I also think of Marchei/Hotarek in Pyeongchang.
It can also start great momentum
I feel like USA is the underdog. I am supporting our team even though we are the underdog.
@@julesc3089 USA isn't an underdog at all. Almost secured silver medal. In case some troubles with Russian team like Covid or Nikitas back it could turn into gold. The underdog in this event is Canada.
I hope we split the dance teams. Both deserve a medal
There is little to no excitement with these games for me - we know who’s winning in the womens and ice dance and amongst the men it’s either Hanyun or Chen and either S/H or M/G.
Ice dance still will be excited, but women and men will be boring.
You guys sound like Marta Karolyi putting together the "team" for the Olympic Gold team event LOL!!! Love it :)🤣

I would not use Jason for the Team Event. I think in the long with only five makes sense to just use Vincent. I think short far to many can defeat him.
I read somewhere that the Russian girls are being kept very carefully. Own rooms.
This is what I'm looking for every weekend!!!
Dave: Thank you so much. The conversation was fascinating as always, and has increased my excitement for the Olympics.
Exciting. Going to be a wild ride next couple weeks
If Canada is a medal contender then team Georgia 🇬🇪 should be too. We have a much stronger team than Canada.
Yeah when I watched Europeans I was super surprised and impressed with the Georgian competitors. They are a dark horse.
I rooting for Sasha 🚀
If Eteri wanted to max out medals she would have Anna and Sasha in the team event along with T/M. Imagine having 3 gold olympic medals in ladies, i dont think that would happen tho!
I think Eteri and Rusfed want that double Olympic champion they're chasing since Sochi. I think if 2018 Team Event went well(or at least Misha held it together), and Zagitova would've been double champion, considering splitting the medals even more wouldn't be so out of the question.
Im so excited I can not wait to hear all the drama. I loved hearing your opinions. Thank you so much for giving me a great start of the week. 😀😀
You are so welcome!
There will be live audience in that rink. Beijing organizer will not publicly sell event tickets but will send “invitations” to certain communities that work for the state-own enterprises.
I thought they changed this recently…am I wrong?
@@JohnnyOpera1 It was originally open to Chinese-only audience but now it's only random people invited, so it will be a much smaller group (definitely not full rink) and who may not be figure skating fans. :(
Ugh, I hope that the U.S. gives both dance teams slots on the team event. They both deserve Olympic medals, while frankly neither Mariah nor Karen does.
Honestly I could see Georgia beating Canada
The IAM teams are all going separately from the rest of the team so I’m not worried about Keegan, he had such drama getting to nationals, he’s probably better off going from Alaska or nearby Vancouver.
Hope everyone gets there safely and healthy~
but to participate in the team event he already should be there
TSL is the best part of the week!
skate canada didn't gamble when they didnt put in weaver and poje in 2018 when they couldve had a medal but they put virtue/moir in for both. but i think that was more for v/m's benefit than anything
It was. Skate Canada knew that V/M needed the momentum, and it paid off.
Bravo, Dave and Jonathan!
I love Sunday afternoon chores with TSL. (Okay really I love TSL and that makes doing chores passable.)

I'm pretty sure Shcherbakova will get the greater amount of politicking to get into the team event. Her loyalty to Eteri must account to something, right? Right? *insert that Natalie Portman Star Wars meme*
I do prefer Sasha to get the LP segment because her LP has that viral potential...but it only works when she hits everything and is not injured. Sooo I do get why Anna would get that LP segment. Anyway, I prefer B/K to get the LP segment over T/M. It's a pity that the latter is getting it because of politics.
Let the Games begin. Olympics 2022: Let the Shenanigans begin.
Thanks for such a great preview! I’m really excited to see what happens and I hope C&B can pull off a silver, that would be great. I hope they surprise us all and bring back the snake dance! The team event is going to be the tensest one yet.
Chock & Bates bringing back the snake dance would be awesome! I think it is a sure winner!
I noticed too that Gadbois has basically stopped politicking for P/C, and we all know that in this sport, you have to keep politicking.
Really great video! I look forward to the Olympics!
Sharon
I hope you enjoy
Ladies Short Program: who will land their triple axel? Because it comes down to this. Valieva, Wakaba, Kawabe, Shabatova, You, Liu, Trusova (am I missing anyone?) must land their 3A's. It is such a high risk jump, but miss it, you are not in the top group for the fs. Make it, you are.
I can only speak for myself, but I found the time change in Asia (forward by 12-14 hours) easier to handle than Europe (forward by 6-8 hours).
It is going to be easier for me, on the US West Coast!
Jason do the short, clean. Maybe Nathan do the free with modifications (less quads) 🤷🏽♀️
But from reports it seems Shoma is staying in JPN for a few more days to heal his ankle injury and probs won’t make it :(
Shoma has better skills and can do the more difficult quads. Unlike most men including Yuma who only do the two easiest ones.
I have to say that Olympics is going to be a really interesting. Love to see you both.
Actually Senior Bs do count for seasons bests and world records. It's only non-ISU competitions or invitationals like World Tean trophy that don't.
We were looking at all scores. I’m sure Alexa appreciates strong Stan’s
My prediction..
Men Shoma unexpected Gold
Sherbakova off the podium
sui-han scandalous gold
France wins the dance
😗☕️....
i also have a feeling if Hanyu falls on 4A he might be off the podium😥 ( especially if all men preform clean programs)
Why will sui/han's gold be scandalous? Even if they make minor mistakes they should still win. They are miles a head of everyone else in goe and PCS.
@@benbailey159bb Which...I mean...what a tool Plushenko was.
It’s really kind of you to think that Trusova will ever accept not to participate at the Olympics individual event. She performed at Skate America while her injury was fresh, there is no way she will ever give up on Olympics. Maybe if she breaks her leg to the point that she can’t walk on her own.. only then :D
@@saraehtor7753 oh if she tests positive for Covid.
@@benbailey159bb Do you wish for it to happen? 😨
I like to hear these two talk .
Im ready for Danny G's deportation party
We are all waiting to see if he gets in!
Eteri will make it happen. She was able to get Diana to the Olympics, she can do anything.
The man is going for 3rd Olympic gold I don't think he's coming to sanity any time soon lol
I think it's Nathan's to win but I can see him having another breakdown from the pressure.
It is Nathan's to lose, but an "on" Yuzu can be a real threat. It iss gonna be interesting if they both skate their best!
@@etherealtb6021 If the both skate clean I think Hanyu will win the SP and Nathan will win the FS and overall.
Japan Team Event Talk 35:50
Alla Viktorovna Shekhovtsova is my new DRAG NAME.
In 1994, Kurt lost to Elvis at nationals. That changed things. Would have been great if Viktor or Elvis one. Anyone but Urmanov.
ALLA the infamous Russian judge just pulled out of the Olympics judging she has covid other skaters may have a chance let's all hope.
I am sure she will be leading from afar.
I've been reloading repeatedly. I'll be back when youtube decides to give me sound 😂

Absolutely agree with everything you put forward David and Jonathan
It’s a true team event if there are two competitors in each discipline. The changes need to happen for the next Olympics . # common sense .
Yeah that's a rule I just don't understand.
It's to keep it more of a level playing field for countries with less depth, for example Team Georgia has only 1 entry in each discipline.
@@fionan7311 the criteria should still be to have two entrants but the sport should make that process easier to qualify for . Countries will then have to build up their teams over the years of the quadrennial. Maybe have duel meets in the season so the scores are built up .
I’m still naive enough to believe that Boikova/Kozlovskii can get that bronze… they’re fighters with Moskvina politics behind them
Light your candles!
If I were Eteri I’d save Anna for the individual, if she wants a chance at three medals
Yeah. She is tough but physically looks like the us falling apart. I still gave her favoured to win lol God, I still want Tuktamysheva there
You missed euros it’s seems
I saw Euros where Anna looked tired in short and missed the combo. She magically pulled out the free, at least IMO, but that doesn’t happen usually twice in a row. So if she had one magic free in the team event, I fear it may not go well in individual. Sasha I think will probably miss one or two quads in both and will still score up there.
@@rajs7876 Yes, if Russian federation is smart enough they'll save Kamila and put Liza for team, Kamila can ended up getting an injury in the team.
Jonathan, what do you mean about Yuzu doing "reduced material?" Is Nathan's GOE comparable, less than, or greater than Hanyu's?
Been waiting for this preview!!!
❤️❤️
Prediction: Jason (or Vincent) will bomb the team event and Ilia will post yet another crazy, awesome, never ever landed combo on the same day
I hope they replace one of them with Ilia to participate in the mens event.
He's already posted a quad toe-quad loop. Unfortunately, they can't just sub in Ilia for the team event. I'm sure he'll wow everyone at Worlds.
@@aalegalfocus he can be in the mens event not the team event
The US deserve to finish third or fourth for its refusal to send Ilia. And I’m an American speaking.
