Great to see pacific islanders being noticed! Regardless of the people here being polynesian, being micronesian myself, i hope more of us from all kinds of background will be able to make our selves known in the future. It’s just nice knowing we have some form of representation.

Yes, they are! I really don’t understand why is it divisive for us to call them Asian? Having Polynesian Ancestry and identifying as one is the equivalence to me identifying as the 2% Irish in me per my ancestry test! I definitely think because of the colonization in Hawaii, the lines started to blur when it came to the race of Pacific Islanders. I love the name Pasifika, Oceanic, and or Moana because this is inclusive to all our islands in the South Pacific who aren’t represented in society. You can literally Google “Pacific Islander” and see majority them aren’t the representation we see every day. I have no problem with them taking pride in ancestry but taking away from a group of people who have a lack of representation sounds a little too PRIVILEGY for me. The fact that you can pick and choose your race, is beyond me! You can be Asian with Hawaiian ancestors, and that’s okay!

Yeah it’s annoying to see people say happy AAPI month but only focus on Asian people (especially East Asians).
But I think the term started out with good intentions, like civil rights activists in the 1960s wanted to combine forces but the term stuck around for too long.
We have such different cultures and problems than asians that it feels unjust to group us together.

@@soniikaye8547 melanesia, unfortunately does not get the recognition they want due to colorist colonizers. So, they often get left out. Same goes to Micronesia. Melanesia is often seen as another Australia.
Lastly, most of the melanesian Islands are more towards Asia than the Pacific. Take PNG for example.

@@DunkyCapraro I agree Polynesians and as a whole Pacific Islanders have faced hardship and oppression but not to the same level as Native Americans. Pacific Islanders still retain their traditional culture, language, history and in the majority of cases traditional land rights.
@@TM686K Acknowledging that this is not the oppression Olympics but I also think it’s important to not forget the often untold ugly colonial history of Pacific people. From the West Papua (ongoing) genocide, the blackbirding slave trade, nuclear testing in Marshall Islands, the skinning of Samoan tattoos off of chiefs to the Pacific people’s body parts still in the basements of European museums. The oppression of indigenous people globally was and is horrific, just because some stories are more well know to be violent doesn’t mean there shouldn’t be space made for the untold stories of other indigenous people.
