  • Get free digital elevation models (DEM) at multiple resolutions for the United States. This tutorial will walk you through how to download elevation from two government websites; the National Map and the NRCS Geospatial Data Gateway. With these websites you can download 10 meter or 30 meter DEMs from the National Elevation Dataset for anywhere in the United States.

I remember one website where it would allow you to view global DEM data and download within a specific area. USGS goes a bit silly, highlight an area and it will give you data outside the defined region.

Great video. Very clear. Had a question about cropping in QGIS. I have a DEM raster image and a high resolution image that align perfectly except one image is larger than the other. How do I crop both images to the extents of the other so I can then export them and have them remain aligned. It doesn’t necessarily matter if the resolutions are the same just that they remain in proportion to each other so I can then use the dem to create a terrain in the 3D program I use and the image as a texture map that aligns perfectly. Hopefully, that makes sense.

From the main menu bar go to Raster > Extraction > Clip Raster By Extent. You can then input the top, bottom, left, right values to match the extent. This will give you a new image that has the same extent.

so how would u use this for a heightmap to be used in something like unreal
because that what i wanted to do

I think that's going to depend on how you want to use it exactly. The data you get here give you a grid with a number that represents elevation for each grid cell. Depending on the format you need for your specific application it should be pretty easy to convert.

Hi! I am trying to do this to create layered maps of lakes- I'm having a hard time finding the data to import into qgis. Any tips? Thanks!

Are you looking for lake elevations (bathymetry). If so, those data are a lot harder to find than surface topography and may not be available everywhere.

@@geospatialschool Thanks for the reply! Yes i'm looking for bathymetric data- i make lake maps (www.etsy.com/listing/754801148/custom-lake-map-art-laser-cut-3d?ref=shop_home_feat_3) I've been creating the layers by hand...

Hi experts, I'm facing issue, I couldn't download high resolution DEM (1m to 3m) for region near sulphur Spring at Franklin County in national map website.it's showing "no data available"... But lower resolution data of 30m resolution data were available.
    Please help me🙏

HR data are probably not available for that area from this source.

@@rohi7597 You have to find out if the data actually exist. If they do, you have to find out where they're hosted and if they're publicly available. 1-3m data are not available everywhere.

@@geospatialschool in national map website the 1/9 arc second (that's 3m) are not available for the Franklin County (Kentucky).
In Data Gateway the data set of 1m resolution is having some large voids spots.. Which is making data useless
