  • Gold Foil Pickups Explained
You’d think as technology has progressed, guitarists would leave the old ways behind and be happy with our modern electronic marvels. But, as many musicians will attest, there’s something irreplaceably special about the equipment produced in the early days of each musical epoch. So it is that today there is a growing interest in vintage-styled gold foil pickups.
There are several companies offering their own versions of these unique-looking pups-some sticking to vintage specs and others presenting contemporary twists.
Though gold foil pickups were initially issued in low-cost student guitars, they’re seeing a resurgence in popularity as more and more guitarists are looking to the days of yore to get the most from their tone.
Like with most things, opinions are split-with a pretty big margin-on whether or not gold foils are any good. But, love ‘em or hate ‘em, everyone tends to agree that they offer a sound much different than your typical single-coil or humbucker.
So, out of all the types of electric guitar pickups available, could gold foil pickups be the secret to your long-sought sound? Let’s talk about it...

Thanks for watching! Like we noted in the video, it's a broad category and info can be somewhat sparse, but hopefully this serves as a good intro to the world of gold foil pups 🤘

Note: DeArmond gold foils tended to be 8-10K, very hot, especially with regards to Fender single coils. Teisco tended to be lower output, 4-7K. They're also true single coils.

Good video! I have a Teisco with small gold foils in it. It's very cool but not what I expected. It's sparkly but has very little midrange punch. I would reccomend taking a trip to a guitar store and trying these pickups out before you buy them online, they're harder to use than you'd expect.

I just bought my first proper guitar (after 9 years of playing haha), a 1999 DeArmond hollow body with USA gold tone humbuckers, which are gold foil pickups.

Ry Cooder was the man that brought gold foils to attention with his Coodercaster years ago.

  • @robinleebraun7739

I was hoping to see how they are constructed. What’s under the foil?

Good work ! Thanks for clearing up some widespread misconceptions and letting the air out of all the hype and mojo-talk re these pups- they're just another flavor-of-the-day, until the next thing comes along.

Sorry for ruining this to y'all but as the inventor of the "Alu Foil™®©" pickups I have a couple of things to say. Gold foil is a tiny aluminum net glued to a paper then sprayed with gold paint. It has nothing to do with the sound/ttone, it just about the looks. You're welcome!

except these on the modern Supros are NOT Gold Foil Pickups. purely cosmetic; internally they're recreations of an old Valco/Supro pickup design . 'gold foil' really means the Teisco and Harmony/DeArmond vintage gold foil pickups. they use rubber magnets.
