Not sure why he didn’t try the 4 cable method at least once. Or put the gate after the overdrive rather than before it for a standard connection. That would have shown me more of what this pedal was truly capable of.
He used it as just another noise gate pedal. But this one is totally more than the average noise gate pedal. Too bad this review does not do a great service in showing what the NS-1X can do.
you are not wrong. But how it does it is important. How it is supposed to work is important. Or do you think it has 4 input/output jacks just for show?@@djsusan00
I got this pedal, it’s my first gate, and I love it. Makes a HUGE difference. I don’t have a lot of gate experience admittedly but man this thing is GREAT
If you run the guitar through the send/return before the input/output it should make big difference in it's performance. I run an ISP Decimator 2 G-String that way and it changed everything. It helps it retain the natural guitar tone and helps it to react even faster.
I would like to see a direct A/B comparison with the Sentry, using a bypass looping system, so that buffers don't interfere. Get a friend over and do a blind comparison.
Very cool. Good shout on the old ns2 being sought after. There is SOMETHING about that pedal (buffer perhaps?) when you have a large pedal board with a LOUD amp at stage volume that old ns2 almost sounds like a conpressor. It's really subtle but when I take it out of my setup (even with a transparent buffer) I kinda miss the smear effect it has. It's a tiny bit darker.
I used and am still using the NS2 in my rig in X pattern.Still using amps here which is novelty for some 😂. I love the Boss buffers as they boost the signal over long cable runs. The problem people have with it is usuallly user input.
Like others have commented, trying the 4C method would have given you completely different results. As I understand it, plugging directly into NG and then routing through the amps effect loop (if present) placing noisy pedals in the loop would better eliminate noise from the guitar, pedals and amp.
How to use a noise gate or a noise suppressor is depending on the situation where the noise is coming from. Is it a noisy pickup (electromagnetic interference in the room, lights, generators, some machines that generate a electromagnetic feld...), is it the power supply to your effect pedals (not isolated cables), the addition of powerful distortion or fuzz pedals, too much gain, is it the amp, is it the main power supply? I like any kind of help to solve problems. This video is ok, but it was too short for me, because it was only one situation where it was used.
Really suprised you didn't try 4 cable. Especially when u said you were going to run it through a 5150 ii. Disappointing. Thought for sure you'd be all over that. Considering it seems to have taken a page out of the TC Sentry's book (adding damp control, plus the reduction mode seems to be the same as the Sentry's hiss mode) I really wanted to see how it compared. But using the ns1x or the Sentry without running it 4 cable and including the pre-amp isn't even getting close to how these are meant to function. For what it's worth, I just replaced my old NS2 with a Tc Sentry. The NS2 always did the job, but the Sentry is amazing. Had a few troubles at first but once I did a firmware update it was a different pedal. The Sentry in hiss mode, with 4 cable method, is the best gate I've ever played. And I feel like if you have the Sentry (or other gates for that matter) and not utilising the 4 cable method, you're doing it wrong.
I love my ISP decimator, its just basic. Turn the knob till the fizz is gone...done! Just curious why you had this pedal before the overdrive? I always thought gates go at the end of the chain
Unfortunately you did not try the 4cm but even though it's a fine pedal but I would add 100 bucks more and get the ISP decimator G2 (which i have)! 1 knob and does the work perfect!!
I can hear a slight duller sound when engaged for some reasons. Also the fact that it cuts off your signal for a split-second is a no-go for me (at least).
Check out Leon Todd’s review where he uses the NS properly with the key input. I’ve used the old ns 2 for years with zero issues with four cable method. This is another poor review not using equipment as intended.
It's just a really fast and accurate gate. And it's really adjustable. Offers three modes, the basic gate, hiss reduction and an user customizable preset mode. You can adjust the preset through their configurator app to only gate the problem frequencies you encounter and let everything else bybass the gate, for example.
Sentry is still better but IMO huge this is a huge improvement over the original. As the gentleman below me stated, iit definitely sounds slightly duller
Finally a review from Fluff as it should be, with personal closing thoughts. In the last years this channel was becoming pretty much only sponsored ads... 👏
@@RiffsAndBeards I'm following your channel since 2011 (at least) so I saw the evolution, in the last years your "reviews" were basically some clips of you playing and that's it, no pros and cons, neither comparisons with similar products. I can understand sponsorship (everyone has to eat and pay bills) but if I want to see an ad, I go directly to the official webpage of the product. Anyway, that's my thought, and my previous comment wasn't intended as a critique, quite the opposite! 😃
@@emimeleyou’re seeing ads all day every day and only upset about fluff. Product placement is in literally every hollywood film. You are the product. Your data is being sold and advertised to advertisers.
@@Ottophil That's no true, I stopped following other youtubers because they did only sponsored ads and not real reviews. I like Fluff's channel for the quality he brings, but if he talks about some product without adding nothing of his own, then this is useless.
Why do you like the TC Sentry? Don’t you notice a huge tone loss (almost all your high-end is gone) when the pedal is on? It’s not subtle. I ended up selling mine because of it.
I have EHX Silencer , it don't to that popping sound. Unfortunately in 4 cable method , it introduce ground loop ( audible when the switch set to bypass) . I have to put I isolation transformer after the send to prevent that ground loop. I wonder if this pedal will introduce the same issue or not.
Is the take away this is a 1X adds a gate mode and better noise reduction in the reduction mode? NS-2 was a suppressor not a gate, but you could kind of maybe make it work as one with lots of tone suck.
Why saying it's not closing fast enough and never adjust the threshold knob up? That's the exact purpose of that knob.. I don't own this gate but I might get one in the future..
I love my Revv G8, never looked back! The Boss has more "bells & whistles ", but I'd rather have a straight up gate that works. I don't seethe need for mute on the same pedal as the gate itself, it should be gating right? I could be wrong, I personally just wouldn't use that feature.
not really sure what the difference between damp and decay is. isn't decay the setting that determines how fast or how long it closes off when you stop playing the guitar ? many kind thanks !
Decay is how fast it closes. Damp is essentially how far it closes, therefore also how quickly it can open again. With the damp not all the way up it can still let some frequencies through, which helps it to sound more natural
Pass on this review. If you're gonna demo a noise-gate, maybe don't leave your vocal mic open the entire time? I can hear the acoustic jangle of your guitar strings when the gate turns on.

4 cable method with the BOSS NS1X: ruclips.net/video/Vy_grgB0RZo/видео.html
Leon Todd reviews this as it should be reviewed. Properly. What is it with people not using the Boss Ns2 and NS1X as it should be. 4CM

The old NS2 can be modded into a gate instead of a suppressor and are a little quicker if you use it as a gate (not the intended use)

"I wish it were a little faster".. doesn't touch the threshold
Mute mode keeps the gate function on while the pedal is disengaged and then mutes the signal when engaged

kinda agree with the NS-2 not being the best only due to my set-up, I need the threshold at full pretty much and decay all the way down
Hmmm yes, judging from my trusty iphone speaker i approve.

You need a Stratocaster with single pickups for this test, Fluff.
irrelevant, nobody with good tone uses single coils
I’m still hearing the ring behind the nut. Tape or foam would have helped.
Ya. I know. I didnt use the tape or foam on purpose. Cause its a noise gate pedal video.
@@RiffsAndBeards - Noise gates are for guitar and amp noise. They won’t do much for that ring.
Fluff going to Halloween as Trey Xavier this year

Sorry Fluff, but you're using this wrong. The NS-2 and the NS-1x work better and are much more sensitive when using the loop as designed.
NS-2 is not a gate, it's a noise suppressor which works differently than a gate.
