I am very proud to say that I am a Day One Dragonball fan of the original I think 44,000 that watched the very first syndication of it. I was only 7 and it has changed my life ever since Thank you forever Akira Toriyama
Excellent channel Layman. Little younger than you, (1990 baby here) shout out to my fellow brothers who love football, anime, and are confused by modern women SMH.
We're around the same age; it was a middle school classmate of mine that introduced me to anime, with VHS tapes of Ranma 1/2. From there it was scouring the city looking for any any anime I could find. It took a while for me to warm up to DBZ, but Vegeta was just too good a character for me to stay disinterested.
I’m in Japan right now and there’s a conspiracy that he was killed by the animation company he worked for because they did not like the direction he was going in for the 40th anniversary of Dragon Ball.
I got started on anime through Dragonball. I had to get up eeeeaaaarrrlllyyy on Sunday to catch it. AT will ALWAYS be my hero for my induction into that world. 💯✊🏾
I remember the first time I saw Dragon ball it was on VHS and it was the late 80’s early 90’s. I was into really into comic books namely marvel so anything animated i was into as well. I really did like Robotech, Akira, Voltron and others. They used to have a store called Turtles Records and Tapes in my neighborhood and they had an anime section( well it wasn’t called “anime” at the time). I remember combing through that section and picking up Dragonball and my brother loved one called "Nina the wonder boy”. I never would have thought that it would have gotten so big, this was the late 80’s early 90’s. I remember trying to tell some friends about it back then, but like you said it was hard to get here in the states. When Adult swim and Toonami came out I was just going to college and I lived for the line up. Even if I was out partying I made sure to be back at my dorm or apartment before Adult Swim/ Toonami came on lol. I never missed an episode of Big O, Cowboy Bebop, Inuyasha and of course Dragonball Z. I remember in college I ran our game room for work-study and we had a media room and every night that Dragonball Z would premiere an episode the media room was packed( I went to an HBCU) so it was all black people lol. It was literally standing room only every week! Everyone would get so silent you could hear a pin drop before the episode aired. When the “Cell Saga” came out I thought people were going to tear the room up lol. Man Thank You for sharing you story, I wanted to share mine.
Great vid as usual. As I've commented on previous occasions, I've been and still am a massive geek. I love animation (western, Japanese or whatever), comics, video games, etc and grew up through the 1990s and early 2000s. My first intro to anime was Pokémon. However, I got into DBZ in the early 2000s. Akira Toriyama has changed the game when it comes to World popular culture. R.I.P. Akira Toriyama 😢
I saw the end of the Boo saga in higher school in the late 90s. A friend of mine brought a random DVD in Chinatown. I was stunned that the series had ended, when the syndicated show wouldn’t get pass the Namek saga. After that we scrapped for any Dragon Ball Z movie, episode, etc.
Great work as always. RIP to one of the GOAT. Also I really am worried about what mainstream is going to try to do to Anime. I still do not understand why more studios are not doing what Netflix is doing and building up an archive of animation that is new and anime for anime fans. not sure if its Japan not wanting to work with them or if they (the American studios) are still not understanding how big anime has become. We do need more black writers who love anime and want to do it the right way but i won't hold my breath. Even though I am one of them.
Wow. I remember running home skipping football practice after school to catch the next episode of dragon ball z . I just couldn't miss what happened next. My coaches were NOT happy, but I look back now and I still say it was worth it😂
Hey Layman, great videos as always. I truly enjoy your content, especially those that fit your anti-simp theme. I know you don't feature horror, but in the anthology Masters of Horror, there is an episode in season one (episode 4) called "Jenifer" that I would love to see you take on.
Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Z, Dragon Ball Super, Arale, Dragon Quest...
Thank you, Akira Toriyama, for the memories. R.I.P.

Dragon Ball z was a cool franchise thanks to Akira Toriyama RIP sir, you would be missed.
Android 17 is my favorite DBZ character!...RIP To A Legend
In the early 90’s the people around me were either introduced to anime through Dragonball or Sailor Moon. I was in the Sailor Moon camp.
Excellent channel Layman.

He owned his own production company and had complete control over his creation. He is just endemic of Japanese “salaryman” culture
I wouldnt doubt it
Everything's a conspiracy 🤦🏿♂️🤦🏿♂️
