Making a gouache palette & painting loose in my sketchbook ❂ Art Toolkit Palettes

- Hello! In this video I'll be sharing the process of making a gouache palette with my existing collection of gouache and new Art Toolkit palette. I bought both the Folio and Pocket palettes, and I'll be making a gouache palette using the larger Folio palette. They're lightweight and very small, making them perfect for travel and painting on location. I'll share my thought process when putting a palette together, swatch the paints, and talk to you about the colours and brands. I'll also use the palette for the first time to create some art in my sketchbook!

I meant to say but totally forgot: I am not at all loyal to any particular brand of gouache - all of these seem pretty good to me! The only difference I can see is that the Schmincke Horadam gouache seems to be a little more like a watercolour than some of the other brands in that it's not as opaque.
Maybe try Schmincke designers Gouache, since it contains white in nearly every color and therefore is more opaque. Horadam gouache is loaded with pure pigment, no white in it since it is the horadam series, therefore it is not as opaque than the other gouache paints from other brands and not comparable
Do you find that the pigment tends to settle out.. more so …when drying the gouache out in a pallet form rather than leaving it in a more liquid state in a tube? it seems to me that in the drying out process …there would be some settling of pigments that might make it more difficult to re-wet, and be able to give the same vibrancy as the more liquid form. I’m just learning about this medium and therefore the question.
Pro tip: add a tiny bit of vegetable glycerine to each pan and stir it in. This will keep it moist for longer, make it easier to reactivate and make it dry slower in the pan, which minimises the amount of cracking. And when I say “a tiny bit” I mean one drop. For burnt umber I use 2 drops 👌🌻
@@Andidejager.I came here to say just that.
Your red watercolor will allow you to make a purple if you wish. Also, I admire anyone who cam fill these pans neatly. I cannot. I Jaber neuropathy in my fingertips and constantly drop the pans. If I try to fill them while they are in the palette, they somehow stick to the tube when I'm trying to remove the tube. I just bought 8 DS Gouache tubes to use in a demi (very tiny) palette. Purchased from Art Toolkit. I'm in the States and haven't heard of several brands you named.
Making a fresh palette is one of the best things in the world 😊
Giant obvious hoos
@@SarahBurnsStudio ^ this took me a second 😊I was hoping you'd comment here -- I thought I learned from you to mix glycerin(?) into gouache to prevent cracking, but I don't know what that is (and I want to know) 😅
Lovely video as always Natasha. I too am planning to make a gouache palette in a folio palette. Little hidden house.
🏡
I would agree with this statement. ;)
Little hidden house.
A quote someone said really spoke to me and that is: don’t go for the masterpiece right away instead go for the joy of creating and enjoy the process, especially in a sketch journal.
A sketch journal is a safe place for your imagination to stretch and explore and it has helped me relax and paint intuitively.
Love that!
Little hidden house - I've been planning for some time on trying gouache as an addition to my normal watercolour and have been trying to get a feel for how it varies from traditional watercolour practice by watching many Y/Tube videos, including almost all of Sarah Burns' output. Your channel popped up this evening as one of those fortuitous Y/Tube suggestions and your video just gained you a new subscriber here. I look forward to checking through your backlist but for now 'Thank you' for this video - we all owe so much to Y/Tubers like yourself who put out material to help people who are starting out on their individual journeys in art.
Little Hidden House. Thank you for sharing! I love watching your videos! They're quite soothing. I also feel like your videos leave me feeling inspired in a way that feels like mixed media is more approachable!
LIttle hidden house! Great video, Natasha. I'm fascinated with dried gouache palettes and with Art Toolkit.
A very enjoyable and educational video, thank you!
I love the ‘Little Hidden House’ 🙂
Little Hidden House: For cracked paints, you might try adding a sheet of baking paper over the paints when you close the palette. It also keeps wet paints from contaminating any lid colors you’ve mixed.
Adorable artwork I always stay to the end 💕
Aw, thanks Deborah!
If people want a gouache-like paint that doesn’t crack I would HIGHLY recommend White Knights pan watercolors! A good selection of them have a strong gouache-like feel to them with good opaqueness, and even those that aren’t have a lot of pigmentation to them that makes it easy to achieve opaque colors with just a little bit of white or black gouache mixed in. I get mine on Blick and they even list which colors are more or less opaque. I’ve been a qouache artist for four of five years now but don’t own an actual thing of gouache paint aside from a little tube of white, thanks to these watercolors :)
Great tip, thank you for sharing!
Natasha , I appreciate your thoughtful curation of this palette. You’ve added light. Your deep moody darks will never go away. They’ve been a place if mysterious inspiration asyou’ve shown so well
I hope you enjoy adding these glowing colors.
Mary
Personally, I love using Holbein and watching your process of choosing a palette reinvigorated my desire to touch my gouache again! Your tiny palette is super adorable!
So glad that it inspired you!
Small hidden house.
Little hidden house - I love the music that accompanied the art-making.
Thank you, I'm so glad you enjoyed it!
Little Hidden House! Thank you for sharing this video on your thinking process to put together a palette. Beautiful painting in the end even if it’s not your best 😊.

Lovely little hidden house! Thank you for sharing, Natasha, and for supplying the paint brands and colors. ❤️
You're very welcome, Jill!
Such a calming and informative video 🙏 I love your painting of the Little Hidden House! 😍
Beautiful colour palette too! The arrangement of the palette reminds me of a Paul Klee painting, a work of art in itself! 😊🎨🤍😘 xxx
I love how the Art Toolkit palette can make paint pans look like a work of art! And thank you - I'm so glad that you enjoyed the video. 🤗❤️😘 xxx
Your little hidden house painting was gorgeous. Loved watching your process with the new palette ❤
Thank you so much, I'm really pleased you like it!
Little hidden house. Beautiful! Enjoyed watching this video-very informative. Thanks for sharing and inspiring 😊
So glad you enjoyed it!
Little hidden house....your videos are so lovely and soothing. Thank you for sharing your beautiful work and your process! :)
Thank you so much!
Hi Natasha. I just want to say I love all of your videos and am impressed by the level of detail you pour into each piece. I watch them all from beginning to end. It’s great to see your process. Happy to have found your channel. ☺️
Thank you so much! I'm really pleased that you're enjoying them. :)
Thank you for this lovely video! Your little hidden house is so charming!
I really like how you don't limit yourself to "traditional" colours like a lot of people do. You use colours that you know you'll love, and I'm quite motivated to do that as well now! I have some gouache tubes, but I don't use them very often, and I have a feeling that's because it mostly contains colours that don't speak to me.
Looking forward to your next video!
Thank you! If you choose/buy only the colours you truly love, then you'll always be inspired to create art!
Little hidden house. Absolutely brilliant and as I faff about with my travel kit it inspires me greatly! Thanks so much!
That's lovely to hear, thank you!
Little hidden house…love this charming painting, trees particularly.
Thanks so much!
I love the unique bold statements you do with your colors and shapes. Very cool style indeed.
The little hidden house sketch helped me to understand the colors much better💙 thanks a lot for your time spending and effort 🌺
Thank you!
Have you tried adding mixing medium to keep it from cracking?
Love the little hidden house. What a gorgeous colour palette you have chosen! The colours all go together so beautifully. Lovely! And thanks for listing all the colours. So helpful.
Thank you so much!
Little Hidden House. I love the cauliflower bloom in the grass. So pretty❤
A happy accident!
Little hidden house
Thank you for sharing. I love your palette!
4:25 Beautiful swatches! Love the look of the small, colorful squares and precisely written labels in the larger square of the sketchbook. 🥰 Makes me feel artsy and cozy.
Little hidden house! Loved your colours swatching and painting process in sketchbook Natasha..always enjoy your style and content..I am inspired to not give up on my own art...sketchbook watercolour and gouache with line studies. Thanks!! ❤ from Canada 🍁!
I'm so glad to hear this! Thank you. :)
Little hidden house. Loved this video so helpful. Thank you 💖
Little hidden house - it’s so cute! I am considering branching out into gouache and this palette building video is so helpful! Thank you for sharing
Little hidden house. I’m going to try an Art Toolkit gouache palette. Thanks for the inspiration
When the gouache cracks in drying I used a drop or 2 of glycerin in the cracks. Then I use the back of a paint brush and gently push the pieces of gouache to work the glycerin between the pan and the gouache. Then I add a drop or 2 of water on top. It really works.
I loved the 'little hidden house' at the end Natasha! And great to see your new palette of gouache. The colors you selected are just gorgeous! 😍
Thank you so much!
Little hidden house. Love watching you paint.
Little hidden house, great video, thanks!
I just enjoy so much having your videos on while I paint or fiddle around my studio, thank you for sharing your work with us all :)
Wow the Holbein gouache is stunning! The Shinhan is pretty impressive as well ❤
Little hidden house. Love this palette. It’s beautiful.
Little hidden house! I have a palette full of Holbein gouache. It has dried fully and some of the colors have cracked but it has no effect on the paint or the experience of using them. None have come loose except one and I just put a tiny drop of gum arabic under it and dropped it back down. It has not come loose since. Rewetting them is great. I have the Holbein tube colors in a large mijello palette for at home. I think the art toolkit palette will be great for a travel kit because there is limited space between the colors and the lid. I would put a small super thin piece of foam in it to make sure there is no gap at all. Would be great for plein air then. I also love richness of colors from Holbein. Smoked bamboo is great. I picked some individual colors instead of getting all the iridori sets. Thanks Natasha! Love your videos.
I love love love the Holbein colours and their names! Since using the palette for the first time, some of the cracked paints seem to have stuck to the pans a little more, which is great.
Little Hidden House, oh that Ash Blue is so pretty. I love your little house and I love watching you paint
Thank you so much! I'm really pleased that you enjoyed watching.
Little hidden house - this was so relaxing to watch, thank you ☺️
little hidden house is beautiful.
Such a pretty little hidden house!! 🥰🏡
Thank you! 🤍
Loved this! I found mixing a drop of glycerin in with my gouache before I set them aside to dry helps them crack a tad less and stay creamier for longer. Awesome palette❤
Little hidden house! Great video and came here to see if there was something I could do to reduce the chance of them falling out after they dry. I think I may have a solution but wanted to check some other video's. Thanks for the vid.
Little hidden house 🙂. What a lovely video!! I learned so much through this video - thank you so much!!
So glad it was helpful! Thank you!
I love the painting! Well done!🥰🥰
Thanks so much! 😊
Little Hidden House :). I have the Art Tool Kit Travelers' Co palette and filled them with gouache. Even the nicest brands cracked, but they still rewet so nicely! I don't mind the look. Your sketchbook piece is lovely!
The cracked paint does travel to other pans. However it’s not bad. I used mine since the summer. I found when I rewet it I could put all the cracked paint together. I like to put a little bit of glycerin in mine it helps a lot with the earth tones. Happy painting 🤗
is glycerin an art supply or a grocery item, ie, where do I get some?
@@ina_lina I was able to get it from hobby lobby in the candle section
@@jenniferdoyleart Thank you!
Little hidden house 🏡 Love your color palette! Very nice to watch .
Little hidden house - great video Natasha 🙏 I’m fairly new to gouache and in doing a Lot of research Schminke Horadam got consistently great reviews so not surprised to hear it kept well in the pan ☺️
Loved the Little Hidden House. I'm new to gouache and found this video to be more informative than I'd expected. Thank you, Natasha.
That's so nice to hear, thank you!
Little hidden house, just love your art work i too love muted colours
Thank you so much!
Little hidden house 🥰 loved this video, so calming and relaxing to watch. Thank you 💕
So glad that you enjoyed it!
Love you little hidden house Natasha. Really lovely loose work. Great palette x
Thank you, Lesley! x
Little hidden house. Love the gouache loose painting. It does have charm!!
Thank you so much!
Thanks for your little hidden house. It was very inspiring to watch & I think it turned out great!
Thank you so much!
Little hidden house…lovely, and great tip on the Art Folio palettes and pans! 🙏🙏🙏
Loved the "Little wooden house" 🥰🥰
Natasha, I love to watch your calming videos and your talking about paint and colours.
I use gouache palettes for years now. Don't worry about the cracking of the paint, it will disappear when you use your lovely pallette. Maybe a tip? Add one or two drops of gum arrabic in your paint, even on the dry paint in your box.
Looking forward to more of your artwork and videos!
I have a little bottle of gum arabic, so may try that! The only thing I am a bit concerned about is whether it would make the colours a bit shiny rather than matte?
Little hidden house. I think it's adorable and I love the colors you chose!
Thank you so much!
Love the new palette, I use Windsor and Newton Designer Gouache and have only had a problem with the yellow ochre cracking. No cracking on any of the other colours in my 12 colour palette. Thanks Natasha for another inspiring video.
That's good to know, thanks!
Little Hidden House - so sweet!
Love this little hidden house. I'll be really interested to see how you feel about your gouache palette as time goes on xx
I think I'll be using this a lot, so I'll do an update! xx
Loved your little hidden house
Little Hidden House! Great episode. I follow you and Paul Wang, so I pick up both technique and joyful application. Makes my day!
Little hidden house 💛 I LOVE the colours in your palette!
Thank you! 😊
Little hidden house! I really enjoyed watching this Natasha. Thank you x
I'm so glad, thank you!
If I can’t watch your videos on the day they drop, I read through the comments first to see wha the key phrase is if you have watched to the end to see what you will paint🤓 Your little hidden house is charming. I have been thinking about getting the folio palette, so this was quite helpful for options on how to organize the pans. Thanks for sharing!😘
There were so many options! I could have chosen so many different configurations. I love the flexibility of all the different sizes of pans, but the decision-making process was lengthy, ha ha!
Little hidden house, gorgeous ❤ can you also tell us what paintbrush to use. Very tempted to get a art tool
Kit and fill it with gouache to paint more outdoors. Yamilax
Little hidden house. Lovely!
I enjoyed watching you pain the Little Hidden House. I also enjoyed hearing you talk about why you choose what colors you do. I have found I think a lot more about color after having found your videos a couple years ago. I see that as a good thing!
That's so lovely to hear, thank you! x
Little Hidden House. I have heard from someone who uses a lot of pan gouache that she adds a few drops of gum Arabic when she places them in her palette. She feels that Schminke is the most amenable - but this was a few years ago and lots can change with brands in that time. I have an empty Folio Palette and am intrigued enough now to consider making a gouache one for myself. I really enjoyed this video and also really liked the palette you chose too. Thank you for doing this for us!
Loved your video! And yes the “little hidden house” is charming. The rundown on your different gouaches is very helpful? 🏠
Little hidden house - so charming!
Thank you!
Little Hidden House. As someone who struggles with trees..your trees are so lovely.
Little hidden house! Loved watching your process.
Glad you enjoyed it! Thank you. :)
Lovely, little, hidden house. Beautiful, Natasha.
Thank you, Christine!
Little hidden house. I have just started my gouache journey. Love the idea of using Saturn red W/c with white. such a nice pink.
Little hidden house.
Lovely piece Natasha.
Thank you!
My gouache tubes are collecting dust because I didn’t like the way they dried up in a pallet but I have the small ArtTool Kits with the tiny pans. This would be a great way for them to get some use. Thank you 🙏 for a lovely demonstration 🎉
Definitely give it a go! :)
Hello Natasha, I was very pleased to see a new video. I really appreciate your work because I also made an air tight box with different brands of gouache colours. I am still waiting to see if they tear. I made one with Daler Rowney's Designer's Gouache and one with Schmincke and Winsor Newton. I like your little hidden house. Not everything has to be perfect in a sketchbook. It is so much fun to play with the colours:)). Take care and have a lovely week, Gabi:)
Gouache is so much fun to paint with, isn't it?! I'd forgotten how much I enjoy using it. I'll often use it over the top of watercolour paintings for details but rarely on its own - that's going to change now! Wishing you a lovely week too. :)
Little hidden house... Your uploads are always so relaxing.. Always happy to see a new one on my feed❤
Aw, thank you! I really appreciate that. :)
Wonderful! Little hidden house 😊
Little Hidden House,The Art Toolkit palettes are a great little invention I first saw them in a video by Sandi Hester here on RUclips and was intreaged.I have several of the folio size and I love the flexibility of them, the pocket one will be great for when you are outdoor sketching. Its inspiring to see and hear how you chose the colours and how you configured the palette to suit how you will use it,and the added bonus gift of seeing paint in real time as well.I think the looser style you are evolving is working well, but is still recognisanle as your style/look if that makes sense, still looks like a Natasha painting.Glad that you are rediscovering gouache as a medium, hope it really inspires you.(Matt) P.s I hope you and Dominic continue to get better each day. When I was configuring the pans inside the palettes itmade me think of that game Tetris!
I hoping to take both the Folio and the Pocket palette with me on any outings, as they're so small I could easily carry both if needed! Such a great design; it's nice to hear that you use them too. :) It is like Tetris, you're right, ha ha!
Little hidden wooden house. Thanks for the video and your process.
Beautiful, I just bought a gouache 18 paints set to try out and I find it very enjoyable, I added over a small watercolour painting and I really liked the results, thank you for sharing. Little hidden house 💕
Little hidden house! Timely video as I was just at the store yesterday buying a few more gouache and the same palette!! I’m a watercolorist at heart but have started to do mixed media and have started loving gouache lately after I discovered the caramel d’achs palette. Makes for each quick painting and sketching!
I love combining watercolour and gouache! Enjoy your new paints. :)
Cute little hidden house. This was quite helpful. I’m fairly new to watercolor and really new to gouache. Love your videos and your work. Thank you.
I'm so glad it was helpful!
Little hidden house! I love my Art Toolkit palettes and the ease/flexibility of switching colours, changing order of colours or pan sizes. I used one of my palettes for dries gouache also and quite like having it available!
(LHH) Thanks Natasha. I have the same issue. A set of tube gouache that just sits there unused. I've been using the Caran D'ache pan set for the convenience but it's limited. This is a great way forward. Very inspiring. I was always worried that once it's dried it was unusable.
It reactivates brilliantly!
Little Hidden House - Happy New Year Natasha! That was a lovely restful video 😊 I think it was the music- I was listening and watching as I drew in my sketchbook. Lovely!
Happy New Year to you too! :)
I love the little hidden house 🏡
