Tessoro actually has an amazing backstory but due to time constraints and focus of the movie being "Fun" they had to shorten it. But Oda revealed it in an sbs and you can read it on onepiece wikki.

Hints we got to the backstory - not including when he got genuinely angry when Luffy said that everything he was saying about gold was 'crap':
1) The 'Stella' included in the title of the opening show
2) The fact that the one finger he doesn't have a gold ring on (not including when he took one off to kill a musician who laughed without permission) is the ring finger on his left hand - where a wedding ring usually goes. You have to watch carefully but you can see it.

It's been confirmed - Stella's dead.
She died/was killed while she was a slave, a few years after she was bought and Tesoro was enslaved, roughly five years before Fisher Tiger attacked Mariejois and freed thousands of slaves.
Many things might have been different if she had survived and had managed to escape with Tesoro.

You should also react to Heart of Gold which is actually a prequel to this movie.
Also react to Adventure of Nebulandia. It's a special episode which is actually pretty good. The timeline should be somewhere around punkhazard or end of Fishmen Island for that one. So no spoilers.
Of course, as someone else pointed out, if Baccarat had used the sword her luck would have lasted much longer. Since she's using a coin, event hough she had plenty of luck, she was using it up a lot faster.
Some people just can't resist showing off I guess.
Or she can't really use a sword.. haha.. like, how lucky you can be just by swinging a sword at one person at a time?
This movie is somewhat underrated, as is its villain. I loved how Toei related the story even though this is not canon, and the cameos of characters like Akainu, Rob Lucci, Sabo, the vice admiral who appears in the VIP room. They even put Absalom and Spandam 😂
tesoro threw nami - luffy catch nami and carina - luffy threw them and yelled robin - robin understood the assignment - and gear fourth kick in. the best sequence for me
This and Baron Omatsuri are my favorite One Piece movies, love to see your reacting to it!

The scene where Luffy throws Nami and Carina and cries out "Robin!!" is a rare scene that was written directly by Oda-sensei.
It's a short scene, but it's powerful and one of my favorites.

There's a tv movie 'Heart of Gold' that's set before this where we find out how they're going to get there and several other things happen as well (see the end credits) but I guess it's not imperative to watch it first.
There's also a smartphone release short episode set just before this movie starts 'One Piece Episode 0:Gold' where we mostly just see the Straw hats enjoying a day off (though others reckon it's just fan service).

This is honestly how Gear 4 should have been animated during Dressrosa. It was supposed to be a one-sided fight in which Luffy dominated Dofflamingo. Instead, TOEI made it look like Doffy was actually able to push back against Luffy's punches. Thankfully, we have been getting some movie quality animation now.
