Harley Davidson Ape Hanger Handlebar Internal Wiring volume 1

  • This is a 6 part series showing the basics of internally wiring a set of ape hangers on a Harley Davidson touring model, pre 2014. I thought I'd make this to help others with their handle bar swap. I'm just a self taught garage mechanic but I'm a professional at wiring things. I'm and electrician and a substation switchboard wireman. I hope this makes someone's project a little easier.

    I have watched several videos and could not get the pins to dislodge the way others did it for my 13 CVO RG. Spent hours searching, watching and trying. I thought I would look for one more video. Watched your video last night. You explained it with a slight variation... and boom... I was pulling pins at 1AM. Give the camera woman a raise. Thanks!

    Great video. As a employee of a major connector manufacturer, I appreciate your knowledge and understanding of the insulator and conductor crimps on the male and female terminals, and how important the crimping process is to a great connection, and not to damage the housing or connector and show patients on those stubborn ones! 😎you make it look easy.

    Just want to thank you. Had to switch out my apes for new ones and your video got the job done for me. I didn’t have something small enough to release the pins. So I pulled the entire white clip out and then pushed the pins up, twisted to the right and they slid out. But thank you again.

      It’s easier if you push the pin using the needle from the other side.. in fact you push the lever down and it releases the pin.. paper clip does the trick.

    • @skydude426
      @skydude426  2 года назад +1

      I don’t know what the 2018 models have for wiring to the handle bar controls. I’m not sure which year, but the control switches changed and so did the wiring. In the bikes with control switches like the ones on my 2012 in the video, 18 or 20 gauge will work fine.

      @@skydude426 thanks for replying. Can I use same for Throttle wire

    • @skydude426
      @skydude426  2 года назад

      You can if you plan on soldering the throttle wires. If you do, be careful not to mix them up. Some of them are the same color. Also, they are smaller wires, I guessing 22 gauge. I chose not to solder the throttle wires and bought a plug and play extension. That saved me the hassle of dealing with the small connector and associated pins. If I remember correctly I bought it at my local dealership. You can also find them on line.

    Hello Sky Dude,
    I’ve watched all 6 videos. I have say, you help me to make the decision to do this myself. If it’s not to much trouble, where did you buy the braided nylon? I need to buy some wire cutters and crimping tool. What brand of tool did you buy on eBay? I too, don’t want to spend a fortune on tools.

    • @skydude426

      Here’s a link to a site I found after I did my handle bars. They sell the crimp tool I use for 25 bucks. They also sell custom cut colored wire lengths and virtually any terminal or pin you could need on a Harley. Very handy site for Harley wiring projects. They also have expandable sleeping.

      I was wondering if you could come to my rescue one more time. I’m upgrading all my handlebar switch housings to chrome. As I said before, I have the Ultra Classic Tri-Glide. I’m told from my local Harley Davidson dealership, that Harley does not offer the reverse switch housing in chrome. Bummer! Any idea who I can go to for an aftermarket reverse switch housing? Don’t really want to go back with the black housing when everything else is chrome. Any help will be greatly appreciated!
