You missed to mention one point though. States in India are largely based on language like Tamil Nadu for Tamil, Bengal for Bengali, Punjab for Punjabi, Gujarat for Gujarati, Odisha for Odiya etc.

However some people think it is unfair because Hindi is considered as a language of North India and refuse to use it over their regional language. It's complicated. As an Indian, I realized how diverse India is after seeing how homogenous Europe is. Went to Portugal for exchange. In our class, all were Portuguese except 1 Norwegian and me. Portugal is a pretty small country and doesn't at all represent Europe's massive diversity. Obviously individual nations that are fractions of India's size are going to be more ethnically homogenous than India. You're comparing apples and oranges.
There's no such thing as "quasi-federalism" in polity. It's a made-up term used by some to describe federal countries which are more centralized with US as a reference point. A country is either Federal or unitary & the level of decentralisation isn't an indicator of federalism. It's whether the autonomy of sub-units, no matter how little it is, is constitutionally guaranteed or not. And in india,it certainly is. Also, unlike most federations, indian federation is protected by an eternity clause. So while,one day, US could certainly become an unitary state if one party becomes dominant in all levels of government, in india, it isn't possible. ever. So, by that regard, india is even stronger of a federation than US. Coming to level of decentralisation, india is also highly decentralised. Although, not as much as US, the units, nonetheless, enjoy sole or joint control over a substantial range of issues. India is ,however,more decentralised than Italy and Spain and on par with Canada.

India and the EU are both similar in size, both divided up by ethnolinguistic groups, and both extremely diverse subcontinents. The difference is the EU is broken up into different countries under one union whereas India is broken up into different states under one country.

Same! There's so much digging to do. So far I've found that both India and China were such trading behemoths you can find their influence everywhere. Indian language Tamil has similarities to South Korean owing to these trading relationships, and not to forget the Hindu kingdoms outside of India i.e. Thailand, Cambodia etc where Indian names and temples still exist. Buddha's history is also really fascinating, i.e. he was born in a Republic and that's ringing Greek republic and philosophy bells for me.

To most of the West, India is a massive country very far away, with religions they don't recognize and languages they don't understand. Of course certain specific locations/identities will become more culturally recognizable. It's not that westerners are _unaware_ of India's diversity, it's just that most aren't deeply educated on specifics.

Interestingly enough, in 2 states of South India (Kerala and Tamil Nadu) as well as 4 in the Northeast (Mizoram, Manipur, Meghalaya and Nagaland), English is more widely understood than Hindi. If you pick a random person in those states, the chance of them being able to speak English is still pretty low, but it's even more unlikely that they'll speak Hindi.

Factual error Urdu is a language from UP(north india) with hindi language in Arabic script, Pakistan's domestic languages are punjabi sindhi and afgani, they speak Urdu because the Muslim elite before partition used to live in Hindu majority areas of India and were speaking URDU, after the formation or Pakistan, they went there as civil servants and imposed urdu. Hindu hindi speakers in North India are better in urdu in terms of accent, understanding and communication (without even learning it) than an average Pakistani. Because urdu borrows 80% from hindi as it was mafe by Hindu converts.

Excellent summary of India but what you failed to focus is that the "South" does not speak Kannada or Tamil or Telugu or Malayalam. They are each a language of a specific state, like Telugu is spoken only in Andhra Pradesh (and Telangana since Andhra split in 2016), Tamil only in Tamil Nadu and similarly, Marathi in Maharashtra and for all other regions.

7:34 is the typical narrative spread by the British that they united India, and without them there would be no India. The Maratha Empire you mentioned covered a large part of modern India and without the British, might have united the country under one government. So while the British did make one political entity, it's not unique or magnanimous of them to do so.

I'm half Pakistani and half Bangladeshi, and I know a fair bit about south asia as a whole so I came to make a few corrections. the first is at 3:59 where you said "north India mostly speaks indo-aryan languages like Hindi which is notably similar to the Urdu spoken in Pakistan" the key word I want to dissect is "similar".by saying that, people might get the impression that it's a similar situation with Spanish and Portuguese, when in reality its not even close. Urdu and Hindi are actually the same language but because of political tension, are referred to by different names. secondly, multiple times throughout the video, you mention that Hindi is the most spoken language, and while that's true, its more of a dialect continuum than a language proper. people in rajastan cant understand people in bihar. the Hindi people speak as a lingua franca is based off the Hindi spoken in New Delhi, and that is what Urdu is a dialect of. I apologize if this seemed too nit picky, but I just wanted to correct some things. hope this helps
I would not agree that people in Rajasthan wouldn't understand the people in Bihar. Hindi is my second language and I understand people from these states perfectly. Could be the villages you are talking about, but I still think it won't make the languages illegible.

Odia is closely related to Bengali and is descended from a common Eastern Prakrit language, albeit with somewhat of a mixed history. The one good thing the British did was become the outside threat needed to unite India. Without them India would not be united today (yes there were large Indian empires, but nationalism would take hold and divide the subcontinent just as it did elsewhere).

It's so annoying when I tell people I'm Indian (I live in the UK) and they try to impress me with a random Hindi sentence; I'm like "Mate, I have no idea what that means, are you trying to speak Hindi or something?"😆 I then proceed to tell them I'm from the South and that I do not know Hindi. Also annoying is when people talk about "Indian Food" and think it's spicy and is made of "curry". I still have no idea what "curry" is supposed to be, and not every region has spicy food, although certain regions do add a lot of spice to their food. Some parts of Karnataka (Udipi) in fact have very sweet food. I'm not saying it's wrong that these stereotypes are present, I didn't know how diverse the UK is either, before coming here. It's just that annoyance is my first reaction.
I just don't like how you did not include Kashmir into north India. It has free and fair elections, with higher turnout rates than any US elections. Kashmir is politically administered by India, and Kashmiris hold Indian passports. You have only made a few Pakistanis happy by doing this.

You missed to mention one point though. States in India are largely based on language like Tamil Nadu for Tamil, Bengal for Bengali, Punjab for Punjabi, Gujarat for Gujarati, Odisha for Odiya etc.

However some people think it is unfair because Hindi is considered as a language of North India and refuse to use it over their regional language. It's complicated. The teacher was comparing our class to UN and telling how diverse our class was. A country is either Federal or unitary & the level of decentralisation isn't an indicator of federalism. Also, unlike most federations, indian federation is protected by an eternity clause. So while,one day, US could certainly become an unitary state if one party becomes dominant in all levels of government, in india, it isn't possible. ever.
So, by that regard, india is even stronger of a federation than US.
Coming to level of decentralisation, india is also highly decentralised. Although, not as much as US, the units, nonetheless, enjoy sole or joint control over a substantial range of issues.

Same! There's so much digging to do. So far I've found that both India and China were such trading behemoths you can find their influence everywhere. Interestingly enough, in 2 states of South India (Kerala and Tamil Nadu) as well as 4 in the Northeast (Mizoram, Manipur, Meghalaya and Nagaland), English is more widely understood than Hindi. If you pick a random person in those states, the chance of them being able to speak English is still pretty low, but it's even more unlikely that they'll speak Hindi.
That's because those countries a major host for christians. As christians they know english pretty well.

Urdu is a language from UP(north india) with hindi language in Arabic script,
Pakistan's domestic languages are punjabi sindhi and afgani, they speak Urdu because the Muslim elite before partition used to live in Hindu majority areas of India and were speaking URDU,
after the formation or Pakistan, they went there as civil servants and imposed urdu.
Hindu hindi speakers in North India are better in urdu in terms of accent, understanding and communication (without even learning it) than an average Pakistani. Because urdu borrows 80% from hindi as it was mafe by Hindu converts.
Facts, my dads side is very proud on being Bihari but during my family is mixed with people from UP and Hyderabad. I guess all those people united to become the Urdu speaking population (Muhajir) of Pakistan

They are each a language of a specific state, like Telugu is spoken only in Andhra Pradesh (and Telangana since Andhra split in 2016), Tamil only in Tamil Nadu and similarly, Marathi in Maharashtra and for all other regions.

Urdu and Hindi are actually the same language but because of political tension, are referred to by different names. secondly, multiple times throughout the video, you mention that Hindi is the most spoken language, and while that's true, its more of a dialect continuum than a language proper. people in rajastan cant understand people in bihar. the Hindi people speak as a lingua franca is based off the Hindi spoken in New Delhi, and that is what Urdu is a dialect of.

It's so annoying when I tell people I'm Indian (I live in the UK) and they try to impress me with a random Hindi sentence; I'm like "Mate, I have no idea what that means, are you trying to speak Hindi or something?"😆 I then proceed to tell them I'm from the South and that I do not know Hindi.
Also annoying is when people talk about "Indian Food" and think it's spicy and is made of "curry". I still have no idea what "curry" is supposed to be, and not every region has spicy food, although certain regions do add a lot of spice to their food. Some parts of Karnataka (Udipi) in fact have very sweet food.
I'm not saying it's wrong that these stereotypes are present, I didn't know how diverse the UK is either, before coming here. It's just that annoyance is my first reaction.
