I just made my own pipboy all i needed was my phone, the app and some duct tape. Plus taking it off after playing makes you feel like you have radiation poisoning in you arm due to lack of hair.
Ha, I just used one if those arm things you put on your arm that contain your phone. You know, the ones meant for running with your phone. It worked, and it wasn’t the most uncomfortable thing.
+WhammyTime91 Seriously the Companion App for Unity wasn't bad. It was free and you just had to have it activated as you were playing the game. Everyone was making a fuss over nothing.
It may not be the most complicated app for a game, but it respect the hell out of you guys for going threw and explaining it anyways just incase someone would need help. That's awesome!
What disappoints me is that I can’t find a Let’s Play where two guys are playing Fallout 4. What I mean is: I call it the Chief Run/AI Run where you grab a friend and one person plays Fallout 4 while the friend acts like a personal AI or a golf caddy for weapons. I had fun helping my uncle. He was in the middle of sniping super mutants when a raider snuck up on him. As he was turning I switched to a melee weapon then a laser pistol (what I meant to pick) allowing him to enter VATS and cap a second raider. It was going pretty good until one mission had us fighting robots. It was a test of our teamwork and situation adaptation. I then moved away soon after so we never finished our run.
I have another bit of info y'all should know. From my experience, while the app "just works" like Todd says, it will cause your phone to get a bit warm, and on top of that, after almost 2 hours of playing the game, with the app on, my nearly full battery was in need of recharging. So to repeat, the TLDR version is the app may consume battery life on your phone if used too often. I hope you all pay attention to this.
+SheosMan117 isn't it kinda obvious it would drain battery life easily when the app is always refreshing with constant second by second update to match your in-game pipboy?
How to make a cheap Pip-Boy: 1. Buy a phone case for your phone 2. Buy 1 or 2 wristbands 3. Stick the wristbands to the phone case 4. Put It on your arm and launch up the app! Congrats you have a made a cheap Pip boy! :D
Gee, I can't wait to use the instant-strip feature, I bet that'll come in handy when I'm getting attacked by 5 bandits, 2 Super Mutants, sixteen thousand Radroaches and a Yaoi Guai at the same time. Also, the male protagonist has the manliest manhood I have ever seen in any sane video game.
*spoiler* I got the game yesterday and when I got to the point where I had power armor and I was fighting a deathclaw I got out of my power armor and took off all my clothes :3
I know you are just trynna trick yourself to think of this. I know you want the pip boy, and I want it too And every fallout fan does, but I has no monies :c
until the plastic pit boy becomes cheaper that's probably what I'm going to do. I'm sorry but paying 60 more dollars for a plastic cool looking pipboy not worth it
I have been playing with the app as I play and it does offer some great advantages, however there is one pretty obvious concern which no one has discussed yet and that is the massive battery drain and workload this app puts on to the device. Testing this on an LG G3 (D855) at 100% battery and no other apps running, after around 10 minutes the phones CPU get very hot (untested on IPhones please add you data) and battery last around 4 and a half hours. which isn't bad but is a heavy drain (again IPhone data Untested). There is also the concern of heat dissipation, as if you keep your phone in some kind of protective case, prolonged use at high load may damage devices. Those things aside, I am really enjoying Fallout 4 especially as a newcomer to the Fallout series.
finally! I've been looking for a video like this for a week! the other videos are just unboxing the collector's edition pipboy and pipboy app demo without connecting it to the game. another reason why outsidexbox is one of my favourite youtube channels.
I wish you could actually use the scroll wheel to switch between stuff. Like have a usb switch in the pipboy to plug into your phone. That would be awesome
+TheRupertLitterbin LG VX8100 or VX8300 by chance? Ollllllllllllllllld Verizon flip phones, but both of mine still work just fine even though they're over a decade old.
This video gets me thinking, next year, when mods come to the xbox, y'all should make a video that shows off the process, of installing, and uninstalling, mods. I'm sure y'all are excited for that.
I think the next time they do a pip boy app instead of making the pip boy a touch screen case, It should be made so in order to operate it you have to use the button and dial switches. Doing this would make the whole thing feel like how an actual pip boy would work
+ykagz007 I love it, I get about 2.5 hours out of my Samsung S3 with a full charge, then it's down to about 5%. One thing I have noticed though, at least for me playing on the PS4, if I have the app (and yes, in the Pip Boy..while playing..) and I have the Map on "Local" instead of "World", for some reason I get some stuttering in the game. Moment I switch back to World map or anything else, it's fine.
Welp. Sadly the 99.99% of us who found out about the Pip Boy edition of Fallout 4 found out 23 seconds after it was sold out. So sad. I'm sure you can still buy it on eBay for $2,000,000.
Could some people stop shitting on what other people like just because you don't like it? Disposable income isn't really a problem if you can afford this game and a console/pc to play it on, if people want to buy a pip boy for the lulz of being able to interact with the game and the novelty of it how does it affect you. Take your negativity and piss off.
Joking aside, it is actually pretty useful cycling between different outfits on the pipboy while your you look at your character in 3rd person in real time.
Honestly, it would be sweet if the pip-boy app allowed you to have a radio station that is the app going through the music on your phone, so instead of Dion's The Wanderer, you can have, Idk, Dropkick Murphy's Shipping up to Boston
I think it would be better to wait for (hopefully soon to come) Pip-Boy Readius mod that will remove that clumsy glove from you ingame wrist and let you use it as a handheld device. Then you don't need to put the phone into that plastic cage and use it as normal phone while retaining the perfect immersion to game:) Yay! But great explanation video. I liked that:) Thanks
This seriously is the koolest thing ever. I had no idea that it actually did anything. I thought it was just sum silly replica, not something awesome like this! Now i wish i had bought the limited edition bundle.
+Dave N My phone is Android and the App drains the battery just as fast. The app stops your phone going to sleep so your screen is on constantly running the app.
What exactly is the advantage of using the real pip-boy as opposed to the ingame one? the ingame one at-least pauses the game. Isn't it awkward to put down the controller to use the pip-boy?
The problem is that you can't connect the app unless you switch your Internet security protocol to TKIP which is much more vulnerable to attacks from hackers and viruses. A risky trade off to see your inventory on another screen.
I'm so frustrated at the moment i need to know the specifics of the fallout pip boy app and how it works on pc. 1)Does it require an internet connection (will it still work if its connected to wifi but theres no internet connection and my pc is connected to the same wifi) 2) How does it connect will i need to log in to steam before i can use it because on xbox it needs a log in. 3) Will it work on pirated copies of the game.
The bad thing is that it doesn't appear in the play store, and I want to download it But there are pages But I don't want to download them in case they give me a virus
In Stats there is a stat for times killed. Is this refering to DLC that allows Dark Souls style Co-op or just a companion who can revive you? It is not in-game only in-app.
So you don't have to pause the game to change things. Well that will be handy when one arm is in the air, while the other arm is busy tapping at the phone screen.
its a good way if you want to remove the pipboy from your character, you still maintain its use, untill the creation kit and script extender comes out with proper replacement >.>
I simply can't get my phone in there properly. I'm using the cushion that it says to use for a Galaxy S3, but it just won't fit right. It always pops out somewhere, and I can't get it closed without crushing part of the cushion. I guess I'll have to cut one of them to fit a little better. Other than that, I love this damn thing. I wish I never had to take it off. Having an actual Pip-Boy on my wrist while playing Fallout 4, combined with the app that allows me to actually use it, I'm having a ton of fun. This is my game of the year, and I'm probably not even 10% into it yet.
Sam Gates The bed of the Pip-Boy is meant for the biggest possible phone. If you have one that's slightly smaller, you need the cushions to make it sit properly. Without one, it moves around way too much.
Getting this game for my dad on his birthday, and I'm installing this app on my phone. All I'm gonna say is his character's clothes and weapons might "accidentally" fly off.
So, it doesn't work no matter how hard I try I can't get my phone to connect. I tried to look it up and it seems that it depends on what kind of device that you have. So my phone can have the app but can't connect
I can't get it connected to my Xbox one. It just spins saying "searching for devices" and never finds one. I have smartglass on and I have it on the same network. What should I do?
Im on PC and its not working for me... just get Device not found... im past the part where you get it in game... My phones are on my local wifi network... I have no idea what to do left :(
Honestly the hardware was a bit of a failure in my eyes. I got it at midnight (Australia so no videos going through it yet) and i worked at it for around 20 minutes just to get it ready. I expected a lot more honestly.
I don't have a pipboy edition, so I think I would just use two strips to wrap my phone on my arm. Although I'm not sure if it's really convenient since both my hands are on the gamepad. Also, my school's network authorizing software would automatically disable the wifi on my laptop (because they don't want people to set up hotspot to share the network access) so I can't even use ad-hoc. Maybe I can only try that out when I'm at home, after the school semester is off.
why wont my app connect to my xbox? its on the same network and my xbox shows up but when i click my xbox it comes up with connecting but never connects
with the tapping a button and being naked instantly imagine it in real life need to get changed look at your arm and tap it hey presto you are now naked
Short answer: It just works

Ow
We’re living in 2015 while this man is living in 2287. 🤯
Ouch. You probably should've made it less...sticky.
Ha, I just used one if those arm things you put on your arm that contain your phone. You know, the ones meant for running with your phone. It worked, and it wasn’t the most uncomfortable thing.
Get green acrylic paint and cardboard
Now THAT'S what a game app should be like, well done Bethesda. Are you watching Ubisoft?
+WhammyTime91 Seriously the Companion App for Unity wasn't bad. It was free and you just had to have it activated as you were playing the game. Everyone was making a fuss over nothing.
+supershinigami1 The thing is, the Fallout 4 app is entirely optional. Unity locked away content unless you had the app.
Alexander Freyr Yeah that's a fair point
+WhammyTime91 And Treyarch
apparently there's a crew companion app coming early 2015 I'm seeing nothing
To be honest, I'm mostly just disappointed the switches and buttons on the Pip-Boy don't work.
Gonk Droid the Bluetooth edition pip boy has working buttons, just like they work in the game
maybe it could have an audio jack plug to connect to it like with self E sticks
now I wish I had a pipboy.....time to get the tape
+Conor Butler (DuckAssassin) nice... lets call it the stick-boy!! wait... what?
I'll patent it
Or you could handcraft a pip-boy out of some paper, cardboard and tape, the poor man's pip boy
+Fawaz Sror Then Stick A Phone With The Pip Boy App Inside!
+Oscar Adamovich yup
It may not be the most complicated app for a game, but it respect the hell out of you guys for going threw and explaining it anyways just incase someone would need help. That's awesome!

+SheosMan117 look, a comment that answers a common question without any thumbs up. changed that
I didn't know there was a common question. What was it?
+SheosMan117 isn't it kinda obvious it would drain battery life easily when the app is always refreshing with constant second by second update to match your in-game pipboy?
Maybe, maybe not, but the fact nobody had said anything meant I had to.
+SheosMan117 i'd have to agree 100%

Too bad I only have a IPad...
What about blood circulation?
That's what I did
@@keulron2290 Who needs blood circulation? Lol

+James Jaudon Saint's Row. Nuff' said
OH NO A DEATHCLAW IS RUNNING AT ME AND I CAN ONLY CLICK 1 OPTION... hmm insta strip or alien blaster? INSTA STRIP GO!
*spoiler* I got the game yesterday and when I got to the point where I had power armor and I was fighting a deathclaw I got out of my power armor and took off all my clothes :3
***** Actually the raiders killed him right before he could kill me... then the raiders killed me
it's amazing how this thing just works, even with a pirated version of the game it just works
Hey, I can do the clothes off thing in real life !
( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
Not as quickly, though.
Damn it I was so close to seeing Mike's password!
Or we can pay the normal price for the game and just download the app and use it without having to wear a huge clunky plastic thing on my arm
+MrTripleKill3 yes
+MrTripleKill3 only someone who don't have the pip-boy edition would say something like that
I know you are just trynna trick yourself to think of this. I know you want the pip boy, and I want it too
And every fallout fan does, but I has no monies :c
Yes, you can. Although it is cool and creates a different sort of immersion, it is completely optional to run it without the Pip-Boy.
until the plastic pit boy becomes cheaper that's probably what I'm going to do. I'm sorry but paying 60 more dollars for a plastic cool looking pipboy not worth it

the character is hung like a horse lol

This app works perfectly, well synced with the game, mostly useful for the map.
This video gets me thinking, next year, when mods come to the xbox, y'all should make a video that shows off the process, of installing, and uninstalling, mods. I'm sure y'all are excited for that.
I would just use it for couple of hours and keep it as a souvenir
I think the next time they do a pip boy app instead of making the pip boy a touch screen case, It should be made so in order to operate it you have to use the button and dial switches. Doing this would make the whole thing feel like how an actual pip boy would work

i am sold at the minin map part

I found this through browsing the settings. My exact thoughts: “HWHCJSFJ SINCE WHEN DID FALLOUT HAVE AN APP”
its comfortable with form but a little oddly huge. i dont use the strap inside of it because it felt odd
Honestly, it would be sweet if the pip-boy app allowed you to have a radio station that is the app going through the music on your phone, so instead of Dion's The Wanderer, you can have, Idk, Dropkick Murphy's Shipping up to Boston

Wow! Mikes in-game character is an exact replica!!!! ;)
I think it is worth mentioning you can play all the holotape games offline on the app
Of course you could always just tape your phone to your arm... way cheaper!
This is pretty dope. No more having to constantly pull up my map when exploring.
This seriously is the koolest thing ever. I had no idea that it actually did anything. I thought it was just sum silly replica, not something awesome like this! Now i wish i had bought the limited edition bundle.
Any note on how quickly it drains your phones battery?
+Joey Byars (xJoey6855x) Any note on how tired people get of hearing iPhone users complain about their phones' batteries?
+Dave N bro what are you even talking about
+Dave N wow it must be exhausting, poor you, he didnt even say he had an iphone smh some of you people are childish
+Dave N My phone is Android and the App drains the battery just as fast. The app stops your phone going to sleep so your screen is on constantly running the app.
Sean You need wifi on for it to work.
How ironic, I’m watching this video about a pip boy, on a homemade pip boy
I don't even have an xbox but I do like the videos this channel makes :)
What exactly is the advantage of using the real pip-boy as opposed to the ingame one? the ingame one at-least pauses the game. Isn't it awkward to put down the controller to use the pip-boy?
not in the case of the map
+Roderic McKay yeah and scrolling through all your stuff on console is annoying D;
+TingTingin the map is the best use for the app.
***** But don't you need 2 hands to use the controller?
+Roderic McKay Probably faster to just keep one hand walking and the other hand going through the inventory, as long as you're not in danger.
How do you work your controller when you've got a desktop computer strapped to your wrist?
It works. It just works.
This is probly one of the coolest thing modern gaming has done in a long time
To use the app do you need the pipboy or is it just a qr code that you scan in game and then it just works?
The problem is that you can't connect the app unless you switch your Internet security protocol to TKIP which is much more vulnerable to attacks from hackers and viruses. A risky trade off to see your inventory on another screen.
thank you for the info sir/madam
Oh dude having the map up all the time would be fucking awesome
OX PLEASE STOP THIS I CAN'T HANDLE THE WAITING :(((
Do the knobs actually work on it like how the characters uses it the game? or can u only control it with touchscreen?
I'm so frustrated at the moment i need to know the specifics of the fallout pip boy app and how it works on pc.
1)Does it require an internet connection (will it still work if its connected to wifi but theres no internet connection and my pc is connected to the same wifi)
2) How does it connect will i need to log in to steam before i can use it because on xbox it needs a log in.
Freaking love this game and i started playing in 2020
Dont regret it tho
The goty edition is nice and cant complain with the creation club
Do you have to restart the game to connect the Pip-boy? Please answer.
Sam Gates Easily? The cushion was too big, so the phone crushed one of the edges.
Sam Gates What the hell are you talking about?
Sam Gates What's so hard to understand about my phone depressing one edge of the foam cushion? What's wrong with you?
Sam Gates The bed of the Pip-Boy is meant for the biggest possible phone. If you have one that's slightly smaller, you need the cushions to make it sit properly. Without one, it moves around way too much.
Sam Gates It's one of the best collector's edition replicas I've ever seen, worth every penny.
Getting this game for my dad on his birthday, and I'm installing this app on my phone. All I'm gonna say is his character's clothes and weapons might "accidentally" fly off.
Can't wait to get the game!! Totally getting the collector's edition!!
It's sold out.
Doesn't mean they can't make more!
+jacesman but it's a " limited edition "... Limited..like very few. They are not making any more.
+jacesman they specifically said that can't make more
I don't think so, I checked Best Buy, and it's still for sale!
Where do you get that pip boy?? I have the app, but not the closable case pip boy.
Thanks! my Pip-Boy arm thing and app is useful now
the damn arm thing is a pip-boy..
So, it doesn't work no matter how hard I try I can't get my phone to connect. I tried to look it up and it seems that it depends on what kind of device that you have. So my phone can have the app but can't connect
Do you need the Pip-boy to use the app or can you just hand your phone to your brother and yell when you need a stumps?
+Ahri Going? No, the app will also work on an IOS or Android tablet. Larger screen too.
What phones does it work with??? Would it work with the LG velvet phone? It is a bit bigger than others
Can you buy one of those pip boy arm devices, without having to purchase the pip boy edition? I want to get one for my sister for Christmas.
Anoyne try playing co-op were the second player ONLY uses the pip-boy app?
So I have a question. What do you need for the pip boy thing
For once, an benefit of having everything in one menu.
I am sooooo happy I bought the pipboy edition.
The map is cool. I don't have a pip-boy but I'll still download it anyway. You don't NEED the pip-boy
I can't get it connected to my Xbox one. It just spins saying "searching for devices" and never finds one. I have smartglass on and I have it on the same network. What should I do?
Im on PC and its not working for me... just get Device not found... im past the part where you get it in game... My phones are on my local wifi network... I have no idea what to do left :(
Finally! A way to undress my character without using the controller!!
I did a run where I could NOT pull up the in game pip boy and only use the app and my fallout 4 pip boy. It was a lot of fun
Mine won't connect. It says the smart glass doesn't connect but my smart glass app does. I'm stuck. Everything is turned on right.
So you dont need the pipboy edition to use the app for xbox one?
and what if you don't have the pip boy edition but have the app, but it won't connect to your xbox 1
Does the radio/music play on the mobile phone or on the PC?
Honestly the hardware was a bit of a failure in my eyes. I got it at midnight (Australia so no videos going through it yet) and i worked at it for around 20 minutes just to get it ready. I expected a lot more honestly.
So do you have to put in the password every time or does it remember it?
I don't have a pipboy edition, so I think I would just use two strips to wrap my phone on my arm. Although I'm not sure if it's really convenient since both my hands are on the gamepad.
Also, my school's network authorizing software would automatically disable the wifi on my laptop (because they don't want people to set up hotspot to share the network access) so I can't even use ad-hoc. Maybe I can only try that out when I'm at home, after the school semester is off.
Can you get a real life pip boy after the game is out with out the collectors edition?
Thing is, while using the real life pip-boy, you can't have both hands on the keyboard.
I still want one though.
why wont my app connect to my xbox? its on the same network and my xbox shows up but when i click my xbox it comes up with connecting but never connects
I don’t think app works anymore I tried making it work but it doesn’t
Does this still work in 2023? I downloaded it but it just says view mode and i cant do anything…
I cant get mine to work, I tried connecting in different ways (on pip boy, pause screen ext) and the option is on, I own an xbone plz help :(
would be nice if there was an explanation on how to fix a none connection even though everything is set up correctly
Does this still work in 5/22/24???
So instead of buying the pipboy edition, can't you just strap your phone to your wrist?
How do you get the pip boy thing were you put your phone?
SO DO YOU NEED TO PAY FOR ONLINE ON XBOX/PSN IN ORDER FOR THIS TO WORK. PLEASE REPLIE BECAUSE IM THINKING OF BUYING IT
Do you need the Pip-Boy? Or is it optional?
seems like a very useful app, especially the map. But i got a feeling that it will drained my nexus 5's tiny battery in an instant
Erm Is this just me but the App constantly keeps disconnecting from the console and I have to keep retrying to reconnect, any solutions?
