My dad took me to see this in the theater when I was four years old in 1980. I still remember it. Time is such a thief. I miss those days so much. So much has changed, I have lost a lot of people and I am only getting older. It’s crazy how a movie can bring back so many memories that were so long ago. 🥲😢
Gtfoh, really!? I'm from an Italian city and this movie reminds me so much of my upbringing... Just the good ol neighborhood.. These kids really missed it..

For me the scene in the kitchen where Anne Bancroft reacts to Dom Deluise having eaten a piece of Anthony's birthday cake is one of the funniest ever captured on film. I can't watch her without practically peeing myself. 🤣
Great movie. Interesting fact is that Anne Bancroft never directed or wrote another film after this saying she didn't think she was good at it. Shame. She could have gone far at it. RIP Ann, Dom and Ron.
+Jackie Newberry Anne is asked about this on Charlie Rose. On youtube. She didn't want the job of taking care of everybody. I haven't heard that she thought she wasn't good at it..maybe it's true. My father always said "The Olivas Family was put on this earth to see how far the skin could stretch" Going up and down in weight has always been a huge issue in my life. This movie holds a very Special place in my heart. It's a great movie about family and acceptance of self and each other. All around Hats off to writers, director, cast Great movie.
Probably the funniest comedy I've seen since those wonderful Mel Brooks films (and I mean all of them). Ann Bancroft did a fabulous job of portraying an Italian family and also a good job of telling a great story!
And with Dom Deluise as the star, it isn't hard. His parents were both first generation Italian immigrants and his love of food in real life is quite well established (check out the Eat This videos that he made during the 80s. They are on RUclips). He really made this movie work. The sad reality is that he did struggle with weight in real life and it did ultimately cause his death. At least he made it to 75 years old and didn't die super young.

Wow. Binge Eating Disorder personified. This movie is SOOOO triggering for anyone like myself recovering from that. The close ups of all the food, was really tempting. Couldn't get over how you could buy 2 heaping bags of food for 40 bucks. These days at a Chinese restaurant, you order two or three small boxes it's at least 20!
I was thinking the same thing. It's eerie. Obesity these days has gotten severely out of control. :( and I am not saying that as a "skinny" chick..I'm here 20 pounds heavier than 2 years ago.
It's because you live in America. The most obese country in the world, blame your government, your greedy food corporations, they are all making you all this way.
Not all of us. I'm thin. Always have been. But yes, the US has gotten disgustingly fat, and sees no problem with it. They want to believe it's some kind of disease instead of a lack of self-control when it comes to what food they choose to consume.
I remember renting this with my mom i was probably 15 when it came out on video from the video store. So, that long ago. Lol, it's funny it was after seeing this I started making omelettes with the mozz and the fresh tomato on the side *no bread like he did, Lol! I still make it to this day. It's one of my very favorite breakfasts. I make it all the time and think of this movie when I do. Lol, so weird. I loved Anne Bancroft in whatever she did. There's still some places left. Our lady of Pompeii church. Faiccos. Pinos. Joe's of bleeker Street. Johns on prince Street. Parisi. Albanese. Alleva. Dipalo. Pasticceria rocco

Anne Bancroft wrote and directed this movie, and she herself was raised in an Italian Catholic culture in NYC, so she knows how it's like and as you said it really is a 'spot on.' Lol.
Dom DeLuise‘s performance was incredible. The only problem with this film was the tone. It kind of left you wondering whether it was a comedy or drama. The ironic thing is DeIuise was able to switch effortlessly regardless. I saw it when I was 9 and still love it’s charm.
Thanks for the the upload Joe! I missed this in the theatre when it was first released and only saw a butchered version on broadcast TV a few years after, but seeing the entire uncut version made my day! It's a funny, bittersweet movie with a clear message; Dominick's weight problem was alleviated somewhat and kept in-check once he was in love and stopped worrying about it! There was a sitcom with Nell Carter in the 80's that ripped-off the "Chubby Checker" rescue/ food orgy scene. I was BLESSED to see it in the theater with my mom. Laughed and cried all the way through. Saw it on cable...had the VHS tape and here’s Utube😇 It’s on DVD and blue ray now 🥳 Gotta get it A CLASSIC 💕
Dom DeLuise in rare form as serious romantic man....whats not to love. AB always such a pleasure to watch. I think my favorite DD film is The End with Burt Reynolds. Those two comedic geniuses were so perfectly matched. Fatso. Classic. Thank you
Ty so much. One of the funniest movie ever with dom and the beautiful Anne Bancroft . So unfair it's not out on DVD unless it's way over priced. You ate the ony. Classic
Love this movie! Thanks so very much for uploading it, @Joe Postove! I love all movies about food; but this is, without a doubt, my favorite one. Wonderful, funny story with great, comedic actors and the sights of classic, old-style NY to boot. Little movie with a big heart. Enjoying this now just as much as when I first had the pleasure of seeing it in the theater in 1980. Mille Grazie, Giuseppe!
My Italian Catholic aunt who was a real life Antionette took me to see it at the Graumans Chineese Theater on Hollywood Blvd when it came out. I'm 52 now, I was 10 then. Great memories!
This os a staple in Italian Catholic homes . Everyone can relate to this .. lol 💯 😆 🤣 😂 Anne Bancroft was such a treasure .. I remember meeting Dom when he was on a book tour for one of his cookbooks. We spent a few hours talking after he was done signing books. What fun and memories talking about cooking this movie . Classic
Fabulous film!!!!! So under rated! Great memories, I grew up working on bleeker street and 7th avenue, how I miss the sights and sounds and flavors of Rocco's bakery on bleeker street! Too expensive to live there again :-( Thank you sooooo much for keeping this great film on RUclips! I always watch it when I need to smile!
liquidschwarrtz, it was said that when Mel Brooks' mother learned he was bringing home an Italian Catholic girl home to meet her, she replied, "I'll be in the kitchen....with my head in the oven!" 🤣🤣🤣
thank you for providing enough information about the movie that I knew I'd like it from the beginning. Loved the diet doctor coughing away with a lit cigarette hanging from his lips- LOL. The key is the ending- I won't tell, so to anyone who thinks they might like it- it's worth watching to the end.
By todays standards, he's not even that fat. He could lose a few. I live in WI, everyone here seems obese. Don't get me wrong I love this movie! Thank you for posting!
Oh God , so real. My family..full Italian Americans and very dramatic like Annie in that scene. Love it. So real.Great to see Annie paying homage to her Italian roots . Born in the Bronx as Anna Maria Italiano, about as Italian as you could get.
Very nice and fun movie. Reminds me of growing up in the old Italian neighborhood. I even understood a lot of the old Italian language. Thank you for the fun times.
"Give him the honey, Jr." "Get the honey." LOL...…OMG....it's the best part of the whole movie. (Richard Karron / The big curly hair guy with the large mustache.)
Great movie, wonderfully written that showed Anne Bankroft's genius with a talented cast! With memorable lines like, " When I eat, I'm me!" "You ate the Ony!" "You ate $40 of Chinese food!" "I ate everything!"
This movie is truly classic great and accurate to the Catholic Italian tradition of what I knew about. Salute Dom DeLouise+ Anne Bancroft+ Memory Eternal+ May Perpetual Light shine upon them and by the Mercy of God May they rest in peace Amen
I adore this movie. Very sensitive and very funny. Brilliant writing and directing by Ann. I wonder if she lived long enough to realize how much a cult classic this is. I loved her in Prisoner of Second Ave. She was fabulous as the teacher of Helen Keller. Sadly missed but never forgotten. True talent.
LOL yes the quips were brilliant. Poor Ann just wanted a bath lol Loved when Lemmon chased Stallone bc he thought he picked his pocket and ending up taking Stallone's wallet instead lol I haven't seen the movie in a few years I'll have to see if I can find it on YT. They don't make em like that anymore. :o)
My cousin is actress Peggy Mondo in this movie. Have yet to watch this as I never knew she was in this movie until a few weeks ago. I remember always looking for her on tv shows never knew when I would see her next.
Darn Anne Bancroft(born Anna Maria Italiano) really captures what being an Italian American in NYC is like. She definitley deserved better reviews for this her only directional effort. The part where she screams at Dom for eating part of the birthday cake is so real. Very very Italian. This movie is a beautiful touching combination of comedy and drama that should have been a big hit. Thankful people years later are discovering it.
he did a lot of dieting in real life too...and consequently went up and down a great deal between his movies. ironically, in this movie he is actually on the slimmer side for him.
This movie has been a part of my Italian -American family for what seems like forever. A family get together is just not the same without us quoting this movie and of course eating. "You ate the "ony" and "I'm not eatin' it. I'm just smelling it!" "Fancul' you forgot!" and of course after the food binge with the Chubby Checkers..."Is there any of Antonette's pineapple peach preserves left? The pectin will settle my stomach"..I could go on and on, but this movie really is an underrated classic that so few people seem to even know exists...and 40 dollars of Chinese food isnt even a half a bag in 2018 money LOL.
Anne Bancroft does care about her brother. !SHE doesn't want lose him like Sal but she accepts him. Like he is but doesn't want to see him sick. Lydia puts meaning in his life! Good story GOOD ending my sister has made fun of me leaving me alone with Chinese food! it hurts a little but I just keep trying to stay healthy hope people accept me as I am!
Gimme those keys or ill blow your nose right off your face HAHAHAHA!!!!! The whole scene though with the knife and all jesus christ cant get anymore funnier!
God I remember dunking Italian bread in the sauce on the stove when I was a kid me and my brother and then getting yelled at by Ma "Get outta the sauce!" Ahh Saturday afternoons in the 80s as a teenager the memories love ya Ma RIP❤🎉

Fatso. Classic. Thank you
I'm black and I used TV o skip school to watch this movie over and over again, just loved Dom!
I have to admire your dedication
Ty so much. One of the funniest movie ever with dom and the beautiful Anne Bancroft . So unfair it's not out on DVD unless it's way over priced. You ate the ony. Classic
One of my all time favorite movies. Thank you so much for putting it up on youtube!
Mille Grazie, Giuseppe!
you know something
I'm 36 years old and I still don't know how to run my plate
Do you know how to use your bread correctly?
Very cute comment SMbigpapi. Made me smile. I'm 100% Irish, and I love this movie. I think that I was Italian in a past life.
Bridget Mahoney I'm Puerto Rican and I often see a lot of similarities between us and the Italians maybe I was Italian a past life too
Lol
Hilariously sad movie! Loved it. Laughed and cried. Thanks for posting! Andy.Mueller.75
Thank you so much for uploading this my whole family loves this! It means so much to us!
Still brings me tears of laughter and emotion. This movie reminds me of my family in a sweet and crazy way.
My Italian Catholic aunt who was a real life Antionette took me to see it at the Graumans Chineese Theater on Hollywood Blvd when it came out. I'm 52 now, I was 10 then. Great memories!
Anne Bancroft had such a mind. What a genius.
There will never be another Dom DeLuise! May god bless you and keep those heavens smiling!!!
Classic
Anne Bancroft, Dom DeLuise, etc. were absolutely perfect!!!
The most-quotable movie of all-time.
“Why do they want me to be skinny? I’m not so bad as I am…am I?” My whole life right there
Fabulous film!!!!! So under rated! Great memories, I grew up working on bleeker street and 7th avenue, how I miss the sights and sounds and flavors of Rocco's bakery on bleeker street! Too expensive to live there again :-(
Thank you sooooo much for keeping this great film on RUclips! I always watch it when I need to smile!
Thanks for uploading this, it's an old family favorite!!
liquidschwarrtz, it was said that when Mel Brooks' mother learned he was bringing home an Italian Catholic girl home to meet her, she replied, "I'll be in the kitchen....with my head in the oven!" 🤣🤣🤣
This movie is a classic!
And the mind is a powerful thing.
I could swear I smelled that spaghetti sauce as it was bubbling on the stove lol!
🤤🤤🍝🍝🍝
What a great response!!
thank you for providing enough information about the movie that I knew I'd like it from the beginning. Loved the diet doctor coughing away with a lit cigarette hanging from his lips- LOL. The key is the ending- I won't tell, so to anyone who thinks they might like it- it's worth watching to the end.
Swelled up with tears when he started talking to the pic of his mom at the end
Thank you for posting this. You brought back so many fond memories. Such a great movie
The most relatable movie I've ever seen.
Uh-huh . The obesity war goes on .
By todays standards, he's not even that fat. He could lose a few. I live in WI, everyone here seems obese. Don't get me wrong I love this movie! Thank you for posting!
meltz911 I totally agree with you! Dominic looks skinny compared to most men I know. He doesn’t have that much of an abdomen area.
Thank you for posting this. It's a GEM. Period.
"You ate the ony"
WELL!?!?!?!
Balloon: BBBPPHPHPHPHHPHPPH!!
My mother used to lose her temper just like her :)
Dave Wilson Rofllllllll!!!
Oh God , so real. My family..full Italian Americans and very dramatic like Annie in that scene. Love it. So real.Great to see Annie paying homage to her Italian roots . Born in the Bronx as Anna Maria Italiano, about as Italian as you could get.
Wow, what a shame. This is considered fat back in 1980 and look where we are now.
Anyway, thanks for posting this. It's a great movie.
of course that was considered fat. the fact you think he isn't shows how fuck you're conception of fat is. maybe you're a fatso too lol
Loved the Sweet Georgia Brown song, related to another Anne's Bancroft and Mel Brooks movie - To be or not to be!!!
Yeah, funny dude-he was also in Sidney Lumet’s “Prince of the City” the following year
"You're such good people. The good people are the fat people."
Amy Shanahan and the fat people die young!
Great movie, wonderfully written that showed Anne Bankroft's genius with a talented cast! With memorable lines like, " When I eat, I'm me!" "You ate the Ony!" "You ate $40 of Chinese food!" "I ate everything!"
I swear by today's standard's Dom is barely overweight in this film.
Dom is so adorable in this wonderful film and his love interest is an absolute jewel
His love interest is that lady from Easy Money who played Rodney Dangerfields wife
This movie is truly classic great and accurate to the Catholic Italian tradition of what I knew about.
Salute
Dom DeLouise+
Anne Bancroft+
Memory Eternal+
May Perpetual Light shine upon them and by the Mercy of God May they rest in peace Amen
Don't watch this if you're on a diet! It made me so hungry i pigged out.LOL
I love Dom he was such a great actor
I adore this movie. Very sensitive and very funny. Brilliant writing and directing by Ann. I wonder if she lived long enough to realize how much a cult classic this is. I loved her in Prisoner of Second Ave. She was fabulous as the teacher of Helen Keller. Sadly missed but never forgotten. True talent.
+tonithenightowl Prisoner of Second Avebue, the best! Where ya gonna get the water?!?! Robbed, like you had it, now they have it.
She 'Anne Bancroft' also played in a movie called 'Homecoming', also amazing!!
I adore that film; Neil Simon, Jack Lemmon and Anne Bancroft at their best.
Omg i was looking for this every where and I finally found it !!!!
My cousin is actress Peggy Mondo in this movie. Have yet to watch this as I never knew she was in this movie until a few weeks ago. I remember always looking for her on tv shows never knew when I would see her next.
He’s not even fat. He’s not even big by today’s standards.
Anne Bancroft and Sam Kinison should've had a screaming contest between each other. Oh, Aaagghh!
Sam would've won the ritchter scale but Ann would've won the duration part♡
I didn't think Dom was all that big in the film, I've seen him a lot bigger in others. He just looked above average to me.
when youre the same size as fat people you dont look fat
he did a lot of dieting in real life too...and consequently went up and down a great deal between his movies. ironically, in this movie he is actually on the slimmer side for him.
Dom DeLuise was a great actor. RIP Dominick
I love this movie so much I cry when I see it cause it reminds me of my grandfather
hes right on the couch next to you,his spirit, crying, and laughing, in silence with you
I love this movie. I remember seeing it in a theater back in 1980 when I was a kid. It still makes me hungry!!
'You ate the 'ONY'!!!!!...........WELLLLLLLL???????!!!!' (PHLBPHLBPHLBPHLBPHLBPHLBPHLB) LMAO!!!!! ;)
lol
FROZEN HA HA & 40 Dollars worth of Chinese food also. Love it.
You ate the ONY is what I remember most of this movie. lol
Love the smoking doctor.
Me too. He's nice and skinny and loaded with tar and nicotine. Who will die first Dom or the doc?
Hilarious.
Live forever Bancroft and Delouise. Wow . The greatness slaps your face
"Sal, take me with you, Sal!!!" 😭😂🤣
Thanks so much for sharing! Just did a search for this on DVD - $99.00!!! I have my much viewed vhs I'll be hanging on to I guess!
Anne Bancroft was great in this
God I remember dunking Italian bread in the sauce on the stove when I was a kid me and my brother and then getting yelled at by Ma "Get outta the sauce!" Ahh Saturday afternoons in the 80s as a teenager the memories love ya Ma RIP❤🎉
What an underrated movie, such a treasure. I've loved this movie for years, but only had it on VHS, thank you for the upload,
