I kind of wouldn’t mind seeing dual versions as long as they’re clearly labeled. Include both the standard 4k and the A.I. upscale. Selling the upscale by itself probably is not the way to go. I realize this isn’t a fair comparison but when digitizing my old photos I like to retain the original (with imperfections and grain) and also a upscaled, repaired version even though it technically introduces elements that weren’t in the original. But then at some point in the future somebody’s going to potentially see both versions and decide “why would I want to keep the lower resolution version with the original flaws” and end up trashing it, so there’s that. But that would probably end up happening regardless. Assuming they even want to keep these old photos of people they probably didn’t even personally know.
I think My Moonization did the AI upscale himself. The 2017 and 2022 Steelbook are the same, but the latter had Dolby Vision added. At least that’s what I think. The disclaimer isn’t clear on that.
Weird. I bought the 4k steelbook here in the Netherlands in July 2023, but it does not look overprocessed at all. I checked the scene depicted here at 10:50: mine shows tattooed arms with freckles and in fact... hair.
@@Mymoonization Thanks. I understand. It's just that my steelbook is also advertised as the 25th anniversary release and the artwork is the same. There is no further info on the steelbook, so I got confused about this. Wish you all the best for 2025.
It would seem AI is incapable of understanding the imperfections on skin which causes it to scrub the image almost thinking that it's removing grain. Certainly in a still frame it looks horrendous but I wonder if it's as noticeable when the image is moving?
Where did you find the AI upscale? I have the steelbook and it does not look like that. At all. Many commenters here are now under the false impression that the AI images you’re showing is what’s actually on the disc. It is not.
Did you notice it said "A.I.Version". The basic image comes from the steelbook but retouched by myself and this via I.A. If I wanted to give false information I would have indicated 2017 vs 2022 edition. My goal is to make a difference between an image with gaun and another without. I hope I was clearer this time. Happy New Year to you and your loved ones !
Hmmm, it mostly works ok, but with fine detail like rock faces and planet surfaces it adds too much edge detail, and with mushy or motion blurred stuff like rain and flying slime it removes too much edge detail. Would still watch both versions though.
Personally, if A.I. will help with resolution vs just smearing the image, then I'm fine with it. I only like grain when it's handled very well and is extremely fine. I HATE chunky grain that is literally dancing in the background or on faces that takes me completely out of the movie, then I rather watch the blu or DVD.
I want old films to look like film not a videogame cutscene. People that hate grain just don't understand film and are probably the same people that use motion enhancement features and use the cool temp lol They're just clueless. Luckily very few directors cater to them cough Cameron cough 😆
Im glad i kept my 2017 release version...the 25th anniversary version looks garish and theres so much oversharpening on fine details. I really wish studios would focus on high quality scans and let it the texture of the movie shine through rather than try to overly clean and saturate everything.
Once AI correctly removes grain and insert detail people won't care about it being generated (I think?) but for now it's not perfect and can look pretty bad so we should just allow it more development time.
So, AI just a tool and, sorry, it`s wrong usage for this tool. After upscaled step it`s should be one or two steps to return film grain and other analog marks to picture, like, you know, Pixar do it.
You need to somehow title this video to inform us that this is NOT from the new 4k disc, this is just a demonstration of someone playing around with AI on the images. This is very misleading fir people who want to buy the physical media. The only difference with the new 4k disc over the old one is the added Dolby Vision, the grain is still there. I love your normal comparison videos and watch them a lot but this is misleading.
Dear Chris, did you notice that in my comparison, it says A.I. version and not "2022 Edition" ? Therefore, my video is not misleading. Anyway, thank you for your comment and happy new year !
@@Mymoonization Eh NO! Cm'on man it is absolutely mis-leading. Even your text at the beginning of the video states "..The main source is from the latest ST 4k steelbook 25th anniversary edition and with processing due to AI" That clearly suggests to anyone that what we are looking at is a comparison of the 2017 edition vs the new steelbook, suggesting that the steelbook has AI. Also you show a thumbnail of the new steelbook making it more misleading. Even someone else on here makes a similar comment to me.
Well Chris, you're talking about my thumbnail, but did you notice there's a + symbol?! That means, source via 2022 + A.I editing. @@lesstoriesmoomins320 If you understood that from the get-go then you must be more aware that he does this sort of thing. It's not obvious at all. And put it this way then, how come 90% of the comments on here read like they think it is 2 pieces of physical media that are being compared? In other words they have been mislead. I'm not insisting anything, I'm taking a logical interpretation of Moonization's presentation format and even from his own mis-leading wording. I'm not slagging him off here (as I say I love his stuff), but these one's could be more clear as to what we are looking at. How about EG. "AI Upscaled By Me".
When I buy a 4k film and it still has grain. I feel like i`ve just wasted my money! Love what AI upscaling is doing to films. Aliens and Terminator are 2 of my favorite 4k conversions. the other is Edward Nortons Hulk.
Looking at some scenes seen here, I have to agree with You, film grain is unwanted noise, like hiss in old tapes, it shouldn't be there. Having a tool to remove it is a good thing. But look at how human skin looks like especially when it's a closeup. This algorithm clearly cannot tell the difference between skin impurities and film grain, it just removes it. Humans don't look like this! Just look at this: 10:45, isn't it comical how it removes the freckles from the guy's arm in the right?
Well ( as of now) it’s like if you took a video game, boosted the resolution to the max but degraded the quality of textures or even removed them completely. Besides personal preferences, it’s not good yet. The best option as of now should be to have both a real an AI version when you buy a disc, so everyone would be happy even if it adds 5$ to the purchase.
People complaining about AI, just keep the dvd or blu-ray version of that movie. The only 4k movies worth buying are those remastered with AI enhancement otherwise 4k is a scam. You gotta be retrd to pay 30 bucks for 4k blu ray that looks exactly like the 1080p version.
Most 4ks are brand new transfers from the negative using new digital scanning technology that is vastly superior to what was done for Blu-ray. Then add the HDR. The resolution/detail is just a nice bonus
