Late father had one for 26 years before he passed it on to me, one of the last carburetted models. It's been a great car and still looks new (even the leather looks fresh thanks to proper cleaning and care). Its 31 years old now and has done 113K miles, and in that time we have only replaced the battery, exhaust, alternator & the electric arial. Apart from that its been a pleasure to own and will stay in the family indefinitely. Rolls Royce - The best car in the world.

I have an 87 Silver Spur for 13 yrs now and yes,Ive had probs with it. How did the probs occur?
When I bought the car,a few months later the brakes were less than reassiring. I took her to a mechanic advertizing himself as a foreign car specialist.
"Never take it to a Rolls Dealer" I was told by everyone.
Well.what a mistake! The car started leaking brake fluid on mu driveway and then anywhere I parked it. A friend told me whenever I come over to park it on the street because it stained his driveway. How embarrasing
I took it back to the 'specialist' and he told me I had a "loose"hose. He tightened it and replenished it with STP.
THINGS GOT WORSE! Finally I chanced it and took it to a ROLLS Dealer.
"My friend"he said with a discolored face."You have to put mineral brake fluid." 2 cans at $12. each. I had to spend thousands to replace all the brake lines. I bought the manuals(2)for $500 a pop.to really get to know all about her.
Someone else rcommended me to a "professuonal" months later for a tune up.
Not only did it sound worse driving her out and returning her sev.times,I caught an assistant SLAMING THE ELECT.TRUNK like it was his hated mother in law. and the side was all scratched from the mechanic peering over into the engine compartment without a protective blanket.
$500 for a new trunk lock.
    IS IT ROLLS ROYCES FAULT???
    A RESOUNDING NO!
Ive since taken her to a local Rolld dealer which sells both new and used. It was a.fortune undoing what so-called 'experts' did to her,but now those first nightmarish yrs are over and use her weekly wjthout any 'Surprises'.
Weather you spend $12Gs or $50Gs, trust her only to those who built her.She was after all, over $150Gs(depending on the age) when new. Love her and shell love you back.

EXCELLENT advice, Peter. Although sometimes RR dealers will not touch older models (sometimes) . Then it is best to rely on a RR club member for recommendations. I salute you for sticking with it and getting her sorted out.

Mine has been to the same independent specialist for 27 years. The chap is getting on in years now, but he still picks up the car from my house and personly drives it to his garage whenever it needs a service etc. He knows every nut and bolt on my car. He was originally recommended by some chaps in the RR Owners club years ago. Luckily his son who works with him will take over the business when he retires, so it will be business as usual. I completely agree that you need to take it to someone who knows Rolls Royces. Otherwise, it will cost you in the end.

I'm really considering buying one of these. My insurance has come down so much since turning 23. Can now get one insured for less than £700 when I passed my test in 2010 it was over £15,000 a year on insurance. I was planning on buying a half decent one for about 8-9k and just have it for a year or two and possibly sell it on afterwards. You can get classical luxury like this in the cars of today unless your spending 300,000 on a new Phantom.

"in immaculate condition"...."just some damp in the footwells" - errr....I'd want to know exactly what was causing that before buying it!!!! Leaking heater matrix for example.

Regardless of age try to buy one with low mileage ie under 80000 miles especially a Shadow and preferably with good service history with receipts - dont expect to find a reliable one for under £10000

As temping as it is I can't see anyone buying something like this and using it as a DD. You'd have to take loans out to maintain it.

Dear RUclips.... please stop recommending Rolls Royce videos , I still can’t afford one and it just makes me even more depressed in this otherwise woeful year.... No, seriously, fond memories of occasionally driving my boss’s Spirit in the 1980’s which in hindsight I likened to a cross between a hand built timber cabin cruiser and a double decker bus, both of which I had experience in/on. 😎

Not a reliable car, at all! I had problem, with the suspension, and the wiring of the air cond took fire, it took ONE YEAR to have it fixed, beside that, it is noisy, and the front suspension is far from smooth, never again, thanks !
