- Early release (mix not final) of a song from Lemon Demon's upcoming album. The video was created to be projected during live shows. The clips used are from 1964's The Killers, Ronald Reagan's last acting gig before getting into politics.
Did you know that this song was so famous that they took his character (Ronald Reagan) and retconned him into history.
Makes sense, could you imagine if we actually voted for presidents based on how famous they are? Wild.

I think my favorite part of this video is that there's no footage of Reagan's actual political career beyond the sample. It's all just the movies he was in.
There's probably some commentary to make about how he wanted to be an action star and not a president in there that I'm too dumb to word properly.
I think it's a reference to his Alzheimer's and his inability to tell what in his life was real and what was part of a movie in his later life
I've heard that this song is about socialist time traveler Ronald Reagan fighting in-universe Reagan, but I like to think it's a fun take-down of double-speak that can be applied more broadly. I'm also too dumb to put it to words well. Guess I should probably listen to this song a couple hundred more times. 🤷♀️

I love all of Neil's songs, they have a confidence and energy very reminiscent of many 80's songs, and I haven't seen that in any newer music for the most part (not that other new music is bad, but they just have a different sorta energy).

i don’t know why i’m so obsessed with this video. i love spirit phone and always liked this song alright, but it was never quite my favorite or anything. this video is exceptional, though, and pairs with the mix perfectly. it feels like a propaganda video, especially when his face flashes and those hypnotic spirals. it really feels like reagan’s insane, egotistical inner monologue... man! nothing makes you hate reagan more than this video!

Honestly I see it as kind of an attempt to understand the thought process behind the economic policy he was pushing for. He probably really believed that it would be good for everyone, no matter their class level, but he was so so wrong. I wonder if he regrets it or lives in a fantasy world like the people who somehow think it was magically successful despite the reality to the contrary.

@@jodgee2374 the song is a biting parody of raeganomics, or ronald raegan's belief in deregulation and lowered taxes, not a celebration. the song makes clear that these policies don't actually help the small worker like he wants you to believe. he gets the workers to agree by enticing them with the vision of a business they will someday own, while telling the rich business owners that he'll defeat the unionists ("they") who "want to take your money" and "hate freedom" (unionists were often accused of supporting the soviet union).
that's just my take though, either way this track is meant as a slap to raegans face, not a kiss

So i just spent the last ten or so minutes synching this version with the album version and crossfading between the two to compare. It sounds like Neil went back and re-recorded at least some minor backing vocals, and the Spirit Phone version is definitely more fleshed out than this one. This version sounds a little empty in comparison to the album version's backing synth sounds.
TL;DR This shit is rad but 4 years of polish made it even radder.
I feel the exact opposite. I felt that the new release kind of lost the grittiness and raw energy that the demo had. It lost the bounce to it, became more softcore. But it did seam really well with the rest of the album, so it's fine I guess
I can definitely appreciate the amount of effort that went into it, though
+Sharkalien I think the switch from synth to guitar made the album version a lot more powerful than this one. However, there's way more organ sound in this. I like to switch back and forth between the two.

Every time I play through the spirit phone album (often) I am inclined to stop right after I earn my life and head on over here to this video as I just can't help but find this version of Reaganomics much better. Don't get me wrong album ver is great but it just pales in comparison. It was the first version of this song that I heard and is just so much punchier and better as a standalone song without as much of the blatant (albeit fantastic) silliness of the album version that keeps it in line with the theme of the album. A friend of mine whose first experience of reaganomics was the album ver has since listened to this and agrees it simply goes harder. I really hope this version stays up indeinitely. I think personally he just tried to make it better... /too/ much. Sometimes you just gotta leave something alone, I see that kind of thing with writers who over-edit their work.
Honestly I had the same opinion of it at first, but the more I listen to the spirit phone version, he clearly has a much better sense of progression and cohesiveness to the entire track and it's tone. It's much more nuanced and not as in-your-face as this version (which i think is the only area in which the new one is not as good as this one), but he compliments the lyrical tone of the song a little better with the version on spirit phone (imo).
I agree to some extent. Like I like certain aspects of both. I think a lot of the songs original soul is in this version, but the version on Spirit Phone is a little more unified and less jarring.

This song might imply that Ronald Reagan has no clue how to govern, *but* it doesn't ever state it and I think that's the second best thing about this song.
I think he knew how to govern (although that’s a low bar now), it’s just that he did it in an incredibly laissez-faire/modern conservative way. I think it’s more poking fun at how over the top he was.

edit 4 years later: I don't know why I called the spirit phone version overproduced. After listening to spirit phone a bunch of times, I would say that the spirit phone version definitely has a much richer and fuller sound, but this version just sounds more explosive and raw. They both have their qualities but I still like this version more :')

Edit: This is a genius song though with very well thought out editing and really the video adds a lot to the song. The transitions into black and white and the snares when there is actions. It's genius.
