Natalie, you need to get a moderator for your comments section if you're going to commit to watching game of thrones because especially for this show people spoil things a lot in the comments section. And in this show, it really ruins it if something is spoiled.

Absolutely get a comments mod. Some spoilers are on purpose but some are accidental, I'm quite guilty of accidental spoilers just because this show has a way of taking some throw away statement and later on going "no really we planted the seed and left it dangling, here's the pay off you thought we didn't think of" and then does it.

I'd honestly recommend not doing any searches about info on this show. Instead, have a trusted friend or relative feed your answers for basic non spoilery questions, since they won't spoil you by mistake.
With every google search, you're combating both show and book spoilers and the internet is absolutely littered with them. I can't even count the number of times I was spoiled when the show was still going on even!

Agreed. You'll get so many unintentional spoilers it's not even funny. This isn't like other shows in being able to avoid spoilers, with the amount of press coverage about it (and their "clickbaity" titles).

Personally I liked the things that happened, but it was WAY too rushed and some characters like Jamie were written badly. His actions kinda make sense, but it was too rushed so it make him look like a jerk. Also Tyrion was made a little dumber than usual, and Jon literally had no other brain cells that "You are my queen" In the books, Bran is the first to have a POV, so it makes sense for him to be the king. In the series tho, he didn't have enough screen time and again, it was too rushed and out of nowhere for it to seem right. I liked what they did with Daenerys, and it did have SOME signs that it would happen (being cold when people were dying, liking revenge, mercilessly killing (bad people, but still), etc. also when Missandei died, it showed that she was going a little crazy, but it was still too rushed and seemed out of no where, so it wasn't as powerful and great as if it would be if she had more time to develop into a crazy person. If she had time she would be my favorite villain, since it would be a great story about how the kindest people can turn bad... But yeah... Also the night walkers were too rushed, like, the king died so easily, it's kinda sad 😅 At least those are my thoughts.

So to explain a couple of things:
    1. "Snow" is the surname given to bastards, or children born out of wedlock, that live in the region know as The North. All the regions of Westeros do this. The southernmost region, Dorne, is an arid, desert like area. Bastards there are named "Sand". Bastards from The Riverlands are named "Rivers" and so on. It is basically a way of pointing out that they are illegitimate children of lords, and therefore have no rights of succession in the family.
    2. Every major family (Stark, Lannister, Baratheon, etc.) have a motto. The Stark motto is "Winter is Coming." In this world, summers and winters can last for years, even decades. It has been many years since the last true winter at this point, but as the Starks live in The North, they are keenly aware of how devastating Winter can be. They are always vigilant of the coming winter, hence their "house words."
I am so excited to watch this series and see your reaction to it.

Unfortunately the lack of care and quality in the later seasons left many fans severly dissapointed and it does sadly sour the whole show.

Just my opinion, Ive no problem with other opinions, and I still really enjoyed and was invested in the show by the end of season 6. If it had finished strongly Id probably hold seasons 5 and 6 in higher regard. Incorrect, that isint a constant. It's very loose, and it should be specified only Highborn bastards get the surname.
Excerpt from "Bastardry" a wiki of ice and fire.
"The surname a bastard received appears to be connected to the location the child is raised, though this is not a consistent rule. Because of this, bastards who are half-siblings might have different surnames. For example, King Robert I Baratheon's eldest bastard, born and raised in the Vale, is called Mya Stone, while his bastard from the stormlands (fathered on a noblewoman from the Reach) is called Edric Storm. However, whilst Aegor Rivers was raised at Stone Hedge in the riverlands, his half-brother Brynden was also called Rivers, despite having lived at least the first few years of his life with his mother at King's Landing in the crownlands.[21] Prince Oberyn Martell's eight bastard daughters all have the surname Sand, even though the eldest, Obara, lived in Oldtown in the Reach during the earlier years of her life"

Biggest point, it's not a true rule. There's no law in Westeros demanding noble bastards take the lands name, it's a custom so yes you are incorrect.
While refered to as a rule you should view it more as a practice or custom, its not enshrined in law and is thus malleable.
I'm not trying to be rude, just pointing out what you said was incorrect. You literally attempted to do the same thing.
In truth it can be boiled down to whatever bastard name fits best being the one that sticks, not fully where your raised or fully where you were born. Perhaps a mix of both.
If you had instead said that it's usually not where your born, but where your raised that could be a correct statement. But it's also obvious that the place you are born is usually the place your raised anyway.

“Winter is coming” = House Stark motto. In this world, the seasons are much different. Winter and summer last years, sometimes decades. House Stark holds the North and protects the realm from the dangers beyond the ice wall, so their motto means they’re always prepared for the worst.
Snow = name given to illegitimate children in the north. Each realm has their own generic name for bastards, though I can only remember “Rivers” as the one for the river lands and “Sands” for the desert region to the south.
Sansa and Arya go with Ned so they can learn the ways of the court and gain some polish in polite society.
Theon is not actually part of the Stark family, he’s a ward. Basically, to seal treaties or to enforce surrender a child was sometimes given to another house to be raised to ensure good behavior from the other house or to strengthen ties if marriage was not an acceptable option.
The Night's Watch used to be a very honorable profession with a noble calling, but over the years they've basically become a place where the dregs of society are shunted off to. Disgraced knights, lords, criminals, basically people nobody wants around are sent north to join the Night's Watch for life. Recruiting parties basically went to each lord's castle and asked for anybody they had in their dungeons, and nobels who did bad things were often given the option of either death or banishment to the wall.

"Winter is Coming" is the Stark family motto. The Westeros winters are like mini-ice ages and can last for years. They also bring ... nasty things.
Jon Snow is called "Snow" because he has no family name to take (e.g. Stark). "Sand" is used similarly in the southern kingdom.

@Leon Russell No, Gared was the veteran. Yes, he'd been there the longest, but Wil, who got away on the show, but was decapitated by Ned, was the expert scout, because he had been a poacher before coming the Wall, a job which used the same skillset. Ser Waymar, the son of Lord Yohn Royce, was the "intern" as it were, the newest guy, getting a training command mission. Gared, who was killed on the show and decapitated by Ned in the books, is not a particular expert, he's just an experienced fighter there to possibly advise Royce.

"What is a dire wolf? How is that different?"
In real life? A long-extinct species of wolf that was on the large side for wolves, around the size of the largest gray wolves that exist today.
In fantasy, however, "dire" is commonly a prefix used to distinguish a breed/species of beast that is exceptionally large compared to their more normal cousins. Adult dire wolves in Game of Thrones can grow to be as large as a small horse, for instance.

    • @SuzakuX
      @SuzakuX 3 года назад +1

Unfortunately the showrunners chose to focus the FX budget on the dragons, so the direwolves are very diminished in the show compared to the books, in terms of both stature _and_ screen time.

Snow is the name that all bastards from the North/Winterfell are given instead of their house name. Each major city or realm has their own "bastard name" like rivers, stone, hill, etc..
"Winter is coming" is the house moto of the Starks, each major house has one that's repeated to symbolize what their house embodies, "fire and blood" for targaryens, "hear me roar" for lannisters, "we light the way" for the hightowers, etc..

Love that you're reacting to this series. Despite the issues with the later seasons, it's still one of the best TV series to ever air. But you still need to react to the other quintessential Joss Whedon series besides "Firefly". And that, of course, is "Buffy: The Vampire Slayer".
EDIT: It is quite a commitment to react to, but it's worth it. Just fly through the first season. It's a bit of a mess. But it gets AMAZING thereafter.

It tells of the history up to King Robert's rebellion, so there are no spoilers. It will clarify most questions about the high families and their lands (including family trees), mythical creatures, some of the events leading into season 1, as well as history back to the 1st men. It is $25 on Amazon. I feel it would be a much better reference material compared to google since you wouldn't risk any spoils. I feel so strongly about it I will even buy it for you. Furthermore, it's their family's words specifically because the entire country knows that winter means *literally* years of winter. They don't get the seasons the way our world does. Winter for them means literally YEARS of hardship, and not necessarily just because of the weather. "Winter is coming" is a calling for preparation for hardiness and diligence, a warning, a dread respect. The Starks are the wardens of the north, they were born in, work in, and die in the winter, so to speak. They are known for their grit, they command respect, and they have a long history of that respect because the other houses of the north that lie under their banner have relationships forged in trust and tested loyalty. As such, "Winter is Coming" are weighty and storied words for the people of this continent.
