my guy had Garmin Vector 2 pedals and they were ok, but now he uses the Assioma and things they are great. He also has the wahoo kicker. We did get different power readings from Tacx Flux S compared to Tacx Neo. i dont know why a company things 100W different is within range, crazy!

Hi mark. Just wanted to say i love your channel. Love the humour and effort put into these videos. I'm a 65kg male that is out of practice. I left the army 4 years ago and haven't done much since. 3 kids, all the usual excuses not to train. I recently picked up a smart trainer bike and started my zwift journey. In 6 weeks ive put 30 Watts onto my FTP and improved my overall wellbeing. I used to run, and be quite good. But my lower limb joints dislike running these days. But, seeing you come from overweight to "above average" as you like to put it, is making me want to get back out running. Wish me luck

I like using SPD cleats even on my road bikes for simple clip in/out at traffic lights and recently got myself Garmin Rally XC200 power meter pedals (the spiritual successor to the Vector 3s). I cross checked them with the Wahoo Kickr and they read around 4W higher which should come down to drive train friction. Outside they also correlate with my perceived excertion so I am quite happy (apart from that Garmin price tag).

  • @ChrisProuse

Speedplay pedals for the win! I put them on my bike 15 years ago and never looked back… well, apart from looking back for cars… but the float pays off on longer rides and saves your knees by not locking them into the same repetitive range of motion. People would often say they were like pedalling on ice skates at first, so I had an advantage as a Canadian 😄

I use a crank-based power meter (Power2max Type S) and am very happy with his choice. This video kind of confirms that I made the right choice, I never got weird results, not necessary to re-calibrate, and yes, it's a 2-sided measurement unlike the crank-arm based offerings. Just change the battery once a year.

The thing I'm most interested in is how easy Speedplay pedals are to clip into in real world conditions (e.g. getting away from the lights in traffic, potentially uphill). I have SPD-SL on my road bike and often find I can't clip in first time. On my other bikes I have SPD, and they're first time every time.

i used to used spd sl pedals. although clipping in got much easier, there were still times in busy traffic where it was a bit of a hazard. i bought some speedplay pedals. i find them extremely easy to clip in, in fact there is no real "clipping in" you just put your foot on the pedal, and push, and you are clipped in. it is very natural and easy. i have done some 20% plus climbs with huge torque (for me) being put through the pedals and have never come un clipped. i think they are amazing.

Hey mark great video! I’m a speedplay fan myself. Didn’t like the stiff feeling of SPD’s…..plus the speedplay helped with the numbness I’d get.
Just a suggestion, to help with the wear and tear on the cleats and pedals…..suggesting getting some dry lube with PTFE by WD-40. Quick spray on the pedals and cleats and you’re good to go. Speedplay sells lube but it’s a small bottle and can get messy.

Hey Mark, Nice video. I have to say, I have the complete opposite experience with my Garmin `vector 3 pedals. They work fine and the data i get is in line with that of my home trainer (not within 100 watts) but pretty similar. That said I am not entirely happy with them, but this comes down to the battery system they chose to implement. So I'm not going to be a total Garmin fanboy. In fact i dumped them for my cycle comuter and opted for the Wahoo Elemnt roam this time, which i am totally happy with. I think the main point about power though is not the absolute number but if the device measures consistently, so if you use it you can set training zones. If you set them indoors and ride outside you may feel workouts suddenly becoming easier, due to better cooling, and people in general being able to produce more power outside (for some reason, maybe just down to cooling). Anyway, my 2 cents (or pence) worth. Still like your content, when you back racing??

Hi, Mark watched your latest video yesterday, and I love your channel. Especially when you drop those short film clips in very funny. Anyway, I too am moving most of my tech to Wahoo, I think a lot of their stuff is top notch so to speak, I have the Elemnt Bolt bike computer and the rival watch these two interact seamlessly, If your Tri racing as I do once you get off the bike and the computer senses you have stopped riding it transfers all the gathered data to the rival watch without me having to faff around pressing buttons in the correct sequence. I now just need to change my smart trainer an elite suito to a kickr or kickr core and I will have everything linked up. Keep up the great work, and more falling off the trainer please been there done that lol.

I tried speedplay pedals but I didn’t like 2 things. Contact area, I have never noticed this with spd and spd-sl cleats because the contact area is almost the width of the shoe. With speedplay I noticed the smaller circle contact area. The biggest issue is mud/dirt. Any amount of dirt or mud and you can’t clip in. I took them out in the spring when it was a little wet out and one wrong step in some muddy grass at a stop light and I couldn’t clip in the rest of the ride. It was a tiny amount of mud/dirt and they where totally f’d.

If you’re going to use speedplay long term you really need a bike fitter to set up your cleats.. the wrong position will give you all sorts of problems not to mention reduced power.
Ask any long term user and they’ll say speedplay are the business! The adjustability in the cleats I.e. increased float, increased q-factor can solve biomechanic problems and they’re SO SO much easier to clip in on the road.. I clip in without looking at them

The world of strava is a great platform for getting better than average (paid version has great breakdown and comparisons against 1000's of people). Hill climbing events, great sportives (Dragon ride, Fred whitton are brutal) , multi day cycling events(Tour of wessex is a great 3 day event (over 100 miles a day) where you basically climb the equivalent of mount Everest cycling) .... and then there cycling in the alps. Cycle the real alp du heuz. Compare yourself against 1000's of riders. Ive never raced in real life but some people go mad into that too. Lol as usual. I soured on Garmin looooong ago . After being a Garmin fanboy for many years (several HRM straps, two Edge 500s) I quit after they failed intermittently over, and over, and over. Head unit, trainer and HRM are all Wahoo now (+sufferfest flag adorning my pain cave wall.)
For power I'm on Favero Assioma Duo for the past year. I just bought new bearing kit after about 8000k. I can say there is very little wrong with these. They compare quite well with with my Wahoo kickr.
I have several sets of Speedplay pedals too but not the power meter - yet. My Cannondale has them w/a Quark crank which is accurate but DUB hub relegates it to that one bike forever. I don't like SRAM much as a rule. So I need Lake to release a four-hole shoe (in Competition last plz - or something wide enough for me foot) before I switch back to Speedplays which I really like for the dual sided entry and infinitely adjustable float. Though I've adjusted to the toe flick to get into my Favero/Look pedals and the float cleats are slowly coming down from 9 to now 6 degrees.
Finally I will also add - all told the Favero's are the lightest cleat/pedal power meters on the market right now. They also cost $300 less than Wahoo Speedplays.

    woo more cycling content
also: i have the assioma duo power pedals, great stuff. exact same as my smart trainer. same charging style as your speedplay. id say only benefit (other than price maybe?) is the cleats are look-neo compatible so much more common and less of a hassle to settup (no hastle actually)

I was thinking about getting some wahoo pedals. I’ve had no luck with three of my garmin products the customer service is crap, I too have some garmin paper weights that won’t event connect now after paying for an official garmin upgrade battery door. That’s said if you want rid of your garmin pedals at a reasonable price let me know as I can’t really justify buying another new set of wahoo pedals at the moment.

Enjoyed the review. Sometimes you just have to put your foot down and tell it like it is to Garmin with 80’s theme music blaring in the background while you do so of course. Good stuff as always.

Great video as always. I've had a lot of fun with Garmin customer support. Useless in so many regards. My forerunner 645 music Is behaving exactly as expected when I do 10 hill reps up a 0.14 mile 7% hill and it registers elevation gain of zero. On which point mark, I have something weird going on with HR during hill climbs.... Can't find much research online, might be a subject for your own investigation and subsequent video? My Strava run of yesterday (Malcolm farrelle) alludes to the issue.

Hi Mark, The Garmin Vector 3 pedals do have a terrible reputation, I will not comment further as I haven't tried them. The main question should really be so...why would anybody buy the Wahoo Speedplay when the Favero Assomia are £250 cheaper and are known to be the best pedals on the market (apart from the dreadful original cleats in the box, which can be sorted by buying Look Keo ones). I have Wahoo products and they have great customer service...But that was not enough to buy the Speedplay for me. As for the 5km of riding before the Alpe 😀😀...

You can use zwiftpower to create dual records with "analysis". Create one with the garmin and kickr bike and send it off to garmin. What's your left/right balance with the garmin? It's likely one of the pedals is good and one is stuffed. That response from garmin is just bs.

    • @MarkLewisfitness
      @MarkLewisfitness  2 года назад +1

Oddly, left and right were both reading the same but low. And I sent Garmin lots and lots of data - they stuck to the same response though. The email conversation went over many many days, they had ample chance to sort it!
