It was neat to see the differences between the old and the new. My No.8 rides to work with me every day in my lunch cooler. My favorite food prep knife. Cheers, buddy!
Opinel knives are great , cheap and cheerful, I think most collectors have one or two of them kicking around, great picnic knives food prep slicey..Nice one William
Well, your old Opinel was made before 2000, because that’s when they added the “transport security” function to the Vibroloc. I always have my Dad’s old #7 from the ‘80s in my vest.
These Opinels are not much on looks but are very useful, they also make them with different color handles. and plastic handles. Cool how they fix that lock problem.
Hello William. I have many of these great little knives and use them for more or less anything. And a few Of the bigger ones and saws too. Also a drop point gardening blade and a very thin sharp fish or steak knife is available and of course a mushroom knife. All the best.
Opinels are great slicers. Nice thin geometry. I have a nbr 7 and a nbr 9, and a nice custom leather sheath for the 9 for belt carry. Great inexpensive knives.
So that is what the French version of the "live long and prosper" hand sign looks like. For just one micro second I thought the hand was giving the middle finger... LOL.
If it gets stuck to the point that it is impossible to move, they are easy to take apart and then you can lightly sand the inside of the pivot area BUT only slightly or the blade may get side to side wobble. Or put it in rice overnight and that should cure the problem. I have been using them all the time for the last 30 years and never had to take one apart yet except for modification reasons. Do not try drying in an oven as that may alter the temper (hardness) of the blade. Best thing to do is the comment by @rick gattone. It is called the Savoyard knock in France. My methods are only in extreme cases. All the best.
I agree but i have large hands, the thing is that it bumps the blade length over what is acceptable in a lot of places so the no 8 tends to be seen a lot more.
I HAVE 2 some old opinel with the virole and classic with out virole ! in france opinel it s the classic and traditionnal peasant knife for work eat and all farm and wood job ; and bushcraft with the twelve number
They make that model for 130 years and just as you had the brilliant idea for a cutout in the virobloc lock, they already did it! Oh man you could have made money out of that idea if you where just a little sooner. Well a lot sooner because this new type of lock they have used it for about 20 years now..... Oh well wear it with proud William.
Being in France i can vouch for that being true. I don't know of any other knife collectors near me but i know of NO ONE that does not own at least one Opinel and most often a SAK as well but the Opinels are cheap and people use them for so many different things that they are everywhere. All the best.

Opinel knives are great knives! Lightweight and very sharp!!
That's true 👍
Same as the Mercator from Germany another great blade. They don't break opening tin cans for food.
Got my wife a 7. For her art table.I ordered me a 6 for a neck knife with lanyard for easy outdoor access.
You can't go wrong with an Opinel. 👍

Funny you did this video because I just picked up my first Opinel knives. No8 in carbon and No7 in stainless. Nice little knives
Thank you Steve. They are great knives that sort of get overlooked for fancier knives.
@@WilliamsKnifeLife I agree with that.

Thank you Rhino. Once you have a good design, you might as well offer a few different blade shapes. The saw is a nice addition.

Thank you Timbo437. I have seen those belt sheaths for them. Always something to add to the want to get list.
@@WilliamsKnifeLife I got mine from a guy on ETSY. It can be used both horizontal and vertical. Pretty nice set up.

I thought so too. 🤣
They are elegant a rustic sense real beauty.
Things are stunning.
Thank you Rick
A little bit of work with the Dremel on the bolster lock it'll be as good as your new one William 👍
Thank you Andrew
Very cool to see one that old.
Thank you. 👍
Baguette? Baguette. Hawhawhaw. I should have an Opinel.
😆
Thanks for sharing this, William. I have never seen an Opinel review before. I thought you were gonna do a French accent for a stretch there :)
😆 I need to practice my French accent
Those are great knives. I found out if they get wet or the humidity is high the handle will swell and the blade will be stuck.
They say that's why they have that hump on the handle. You can tap the whole knife down & the blade has room to come out.
Just tap the back part of the handle in your palm..Out it comes.

Those are some good knives. Use a No. 8 in the kitchen all the time. Great knife for the price.
Thank you Steve. I need to get a few more.
Tap the toe of the handle against the table to release the blade. It's designed so you can do that, so they say ✌.
Thank you Ian 👍
Awesome
Thank you Mike
Everyone seems to buy a number 8 but the 9 is much more comfortable for most size hands. My 2 cents worth.
👍

I read somewhere that every junk drawer in France has at least one. And yeah, you gotta try your hand at modding 👈 as if that were an actual word 😁
I know people like to modify these.

MAM represents the owners name initials.
Antonini is another very popular Italian knife.
Thank you Rick
Great knives and highly modifyable
Thank you Rusty
