The opinel no. 8 has been a part of my edc for many years...I purchased my current opinel through Lee valley tools in canada for around 12$...they are an awesome bargain...for the rust issue I find oiling once every 2 or 3 months with basic 3in1 oil works nicely! Nice to see more interest being shown in the opinel blades!
I have a Opinel no.8 as well. I really like that they have different sizes from a key-ring blade, to almost a machete. The option of having a softer stainless steel is great as well. Also, since they are so cheap one can afford to have heaps of them!
Privet Brut. Great review as usual, I just bought my first opinel and have quickly grown to love it for its purity, practicality and elegant simplicity.
This knife is a good one to give a starter child cause of the locking ring. I fell in love with the one my father had which was a no.9 it taught me the value of paying attention to what your doing and I still have the scar from where it bit me. I also still have the knife which is close to 60 years old. I now own close to a dozen of these knifes I have bought at flea markets and carry a no.6 spear point and a no.8 spear point as part of my edc. They throw really good sparks off a ferro rod as well
one nice thing about using Opinels for box knives is that they are easy to keep sharp--and I like the fact that the locking mechanism is not immediately obvious--which helps keep the gendarmes/Stasi calmer
I have all of them from 6 to 12. Handle material can impact price. Beech, Olive, Walnut, plastic, and horn are available at least in some models. Oak has been used. The horn is over 100. Blade material varies. The cheapest still have good carbon steel blades. You can get stainless and high end super polished stainless with a spin that won't work on a sparking rod. The 6 through 10 seem most practical to me but I do use the 12 for food prep. Most of the knives have a spine that works great on a sparking rod.
Very nice video! Im thinking of buying myself a fixed blade knife soon and these videos and the glock knife review are informing me of the types of knives out there. Great videos man! Keep it up
i love this knives, and i owned several sizes and models, the number 8 is kind of the elite of it all. i recently had the opinel n. 8 "de survivance", and man that thing is not like one of those toys you think it is. it combines the care of having everything perfect derivated from the classic simplicity whit the features of it. it has a partially serrated blade, whit a new tipe of serrations, wich also has a nice "cut" into it, a double polymer handle (don't worry, only the materials changed, the shape is still the same, man that thing feels SWEET in your hands even for chopping or so) and it also has really loud whistle in the bottom of the handle. it really deserves a look, trust me. one cool feature, wich you did not talk about, about opninels is the lanyard like loop: in fact it has a hole where you could put a lanyard in, but it comes whit this really nice feature that i have never seen on other knives: a small loop (on the classing ones it has a leather string whit a simple knot, the survival one has a nice, small string whit this no-slippery anatomic attacchment-that is what i mean about care of the minimum detail). it is for, since it is a pocket knife, so that you put the folded knife in your pocket and leave the top of the loop outside your pocket where you can grab it, that way to access the knife you do not have to get the hand in your pocket, but it is much easier and faster to grab the knot and pull out the whole thing.
As a good frenchie ^^ , I own several of theses and I truely recommend the N°10 or N°12 because for me they are just the right size, I think N°8 is a bit small for bushcraft and survival purpose. Anyway, a very good video, is great to see a "foreigner" (If I can say, dont sue me) appreciate a good old, simple piece of hardware such as the Opinel !
Have three of them. I have the Carbon Steel No 9 and 12. Would love to get a 10 and see how well that fits. I find the 9 a tid bit too short and the 12 too long. I also have a Slim No. 12 that I carry from time to time. Love these knives. Thanks for the review !
Nice to see our ultra light farmer traditional knife ;) n°8 is the main used size here for more than a century, opinel is always tight at the begining, traditionaly we knock the bottom of the knife on the table to open it, we also choose carbon blades, the blade rusty patine with the time is the way the opinel needs to look, the cost here between 7 to 9€, very cheap, all the boys scout are equipped with opinel knives, we also have another traditional knife called "laguiole" but its more expensive, less "expandable" cheers, and yes its o pee nel ;) "i" is pronounced "ee".
I have a tenaciously sharpened n.6 Carbon for indoor use, where I often need a sharp and accurate blade and an INOX n.8 that I carry with me whenever I am hiking/camping etc. or sailing. Fits in my pocket, is really lightweight, looks good and is easy and safe to deploy. I love both of them and they were really affordable. Oh, and then there is a n.10 INOX that has a corkscrew, too. That one is in my kitchen drawer.
i love opinel. theyre just classic. my dad has his no.10 for over 30 years now and i have a no.9. you just cant say anything against this knife. its simple cheap and effective
My dad has one he got from when he visited family in Malta and it is a great knife. He uses it for eating (a European thing) so it isn't the sharpest anymore but I want to get some for myself for camping and everyday use. Besides the knife being dull 20+ years later it is a quality knife
this is a very common knife, here, in france. For 4 or 5 euros you get one everywhere. I think in the countryside, almost everyone carry or have one. We use it for gardening, cutting ham, kill chickens, hiking backup knife.. That cost nothing and it's always good to have one in your pocket =)
This company came up with their variant of the knife, I believe with a simple locking collar unlike the current one, in 1890, but the basic style of the knife, without a locking collar, was carried by the Roman Legions 2,000 years ago. If any design is time tested, it's this one. I carry a number 8 carbon Opinel. It's like carrying a piece of history in your pocket. It's also extremely functional. For me, it's a ten out of ten stars. In France, everyone from poor farmers to rich aristocracy generally has an Opinel in their pocket. I'm not sure this can be said about any other pocketknife.
great knives, extremely sharp like you said and quite beautiful, however the lack of choil and the blades thickness make it a little impractical for heavy work.
the largest Opinel pocket knife is the 12 (no 11) and the 13 is primarily for display--as a descendant of the Russ, I prefer the 10 and 12 since I am a short version of cousins that were football linesmen (over 6 feet tall and extremely strong--in college, I was able to bench 350 pounds (over 160kg) despite being 6 inches shorter
Normally when I cut cardboard with knives in that price range you only make such a clean cut once before it already gets dull!😅 I think it doesn't get any better in this price range than Opinel high carbon steel blades.
I dont need to know any of this. But i find it so intresting and love the videos. Im new here and came from the crazy russian hacker. Kgb survivalist you have a new sub
KGB Survivalist Yes in france those blades are the most expensive knife caus' it old as Opinel i think. I if you know Laguiole but just to be sure to buy the good one and not the chines one there is a bee on it :)
METTALICAFANify You have to be careful with "Laguiole" knives. You have to know that there's no trademark or copyright for this name so you can have cheap knives made in China that look like Laguiole knives crafted in France, with the same bee on the hilt. Concerning Laguiole, I would say that the design is a little older than Opinel's. The first comes from the region called Auvergne (a rural and mountainous area in the center of France), the second comes from the industrialized area of Savoie, French Alps). Laguiole always had a reputation of elitism, an earned reputation for real Laguiole knives are hand-crafted pieces of art when Opinel knives are more industrialized hence less expensive but of good quality and extremly popular. When I was young (I'm now 37), every boy or girl owned one for Scouts camps on a regular basis without special supervision from adults...
Great review tho ! And if i can say ,you, sir, have done a good video ! I'm french and i can oly say that Opinel do such a good work they are the best with blades :) I've got one wich is an very very very old model caus' it's on my family for 3 generation now and it still does a fuckin' good work :) .
There are a thousand times in a day I find it useful to have a folding knife...anything from skinning cable to opening mail...anything blade is just a useful tool to always have around!
***** That's really strange, because a locking blade is a safety feature. In Australia, folding knives that lock are perfectly legal, but folding knives that have an assisted-opening mechanisms are illegal. So are folding knives that allow opening with one hand. The last one is easy to get around, though. Just loosen the hinge, lubricate it, and/or use the knife a few times and it'll soon open easily with one hand.

I like these knifes too. I always carry a No. 8 in my bag, and as a kid, I saw most adults around me having an Opinel too.
Another great video from one of my favorite channels! Keep up the good work.
thx !

I got my no.7 yesterday and so far it seems like a great simple knife. I'm going to use it as my edc.
Great video.

Proud owner of a No. 6 since 2004, still sharper than any knife I have, use her constantly, never taken her to the stone...

I used to have a rather small carbon steel one. Lost it somewhere. A French knife company if I remember correctly. I was quite fond of it .
I enjoyed the first part of the video. Thanks for the Information.
Opinel headquarters are only 50 kilometers (about 31 miles) from where I live. Hello from France! :D
I have the exact same knife, and is probably the best folder for the price. I sharpened mine to where I actually shave my face with it
I was wondering if i should buy this knife, but now i will definetly buy it

Hey man thanks for this I just bought one two weeks ago when I was in Europe
great knives, extremely sharp like you said and quite beautiful, however the lack of choil and the blades thickness make it a little impractical for heavy work.
+blue debussy Indeed, but anyway no folder is made for heavy tasks.
I have used one to skin and breakdown deer. Easy to keep sharp and light weight for backpacking.
Great video I know what I'm getting myself also my father for his birthday
Awesome video as usual. I bought one 25 years ago in france and still have it. What knife would you rate a 9 or 10 not to put you on the spot
Hey Alek, what is your favorite EDC pocket knife? I'd be interested to know!
the largest Opinel pocket knife is the 12 (no 11) and the 13 is primarily for display--as a descendant of the Russ, I prefer the 10 and 12 since I am a short version of cousins that were football linesmen (over 6 feet tall and extremely strong--in college, I was able to bench 350 pounds (over 160kg) despite being 6 inches shorter

Great knife and great review :) Nice work (Y)
Will you make a review of wirst watches such as the famous soviet "Vostok Amphibia" watch ?
Hi, can you make a vid of how to sharp and clean the opinel? Cause mine is not so sharp.
I love all of your videos!
hi alec. how well does this hold an edge? thanks.
if you're doing knife reviews you should check out the Kershaw Volt 2. it's quite good.
Could you do a video of your knife collection?
It would be awesome to see some basic climbing videos
I like it too! Great review!
I dont need to know any of this. But i find it so intresting and love the videos. Im new here and came from the crazy russian hacker. Kgb survivalist you have a new sub
Probably would make a great camp knife.
Do you have any BUCK knives because i know BUCK makes great knives
The stainless is a better buy in my opinion the blade is thicker and sharpens really easy
i have the same one, love it ;)
What is the best knife for camping for you?
Can you do a video about an entire survival kit, with all the gear needed
Good video. Awesome knife :D
I love your vids , keep it up BRO ! :D
Do you own a Laguiole? Another legendary French knife company. You should try one.
no I don't, but I do know of them , also with a rich history , but the real laguiole are quite expensive no?
KGB Survivalist u should do a lot more stuff which zgboom and try cutting wire with that nice
Yes they are quite expensive.
KGB Survivalist Yes in france those blades are the most expensive knife caus' it old as Opinel i think. I if you know Laguiole but just to be sure to buy the good one and not the chines one there is a bee on it :)

I second the buck knife review they are great knifes and really good although they are a little pricy
They one most initiative design at the World's Fair if I am not mistaken.
Awesome video :D
Could you review the swiss soldiers knife ?
Great review tho ! And if i can say ,you, sir, have done a good video ! I'm french and i can oly say that Opinel do such a good work they are the best with blades :) I've got one wich is an very very very old model caus' it's on my family for 3 generation now and it still does a fuckin' good work :) .
French quality :D
Good knife but I think all its missing is a guard from letting your hand slide onto the blade.
KGB Survivalist you should do a review on a mora companion carbon steel its a great knife and its made in sweden
Now that's a good knife
What would you use the knife for? Is there a practical use for the normal person?
There are a thousand times in a day I find it useful to have a folding knife...anything from skinning cable to opening mail...anything blade is just a useful tool to always have around!
yep just like Adam Adamowicz just said . 1000 uses for everyday stuff
I've used my Opinel No6 for everything from carving to food prep. It excels at cutting meats and cheeses!
it's a shame knifes that lock into place are banned in the UK, I really don't get it..
*****

i used to have one of them when i was younger i thought it was a real good knife they used to sharpen up like a Bute
I wish I could like the video twice
Yes so can I
Is it ok for throwing?
YE
Yes I use it for throwing
Its a good thing to use wd40 to keep the Blade clean and stainless
If the wiggle the blade up and down enough the lock will open. Plus the grind on mine is awful/non existent
do an Q&A plz
Ouch cutting cardboard makes even the sharpest knife become dull
I have the same one
Ha you was ment to say "meant" too
Why isn't my garage as tidy as yours? Is that your dads garage?
Im 199,300ty subsriber
