I’ve had a number eight for almost 35 years - love the carbone blade- it sharpens easily and has a wonderful patina. I agree everyone needs to own at least one.
When i retired we were going through boxes we hadn't opened in decades. In one i found the Opinel #9 i bought when i was 10 in Branson MO. Memories came flooding back of fishing, cleaning, and cooking. Good times.
My opinel no.8 oak was the first knife i ever bought for myself and I learned how to sharpen it on the bottom or a cermaic mug. I still have it and i still carry it from time to time despite the other "fancier" folders I have
Iconic knive for more than a century...Top 100 best designs at the Moma ! My grandfather offered me one when I was a teenager...still have it, and daily use it !
My dad carried an opinel in his lunch box when I was a kid. He cut a lot of apples with that knife and I have a lot of fond memories of seeing him use it. I got a number 8 with olive wood handles for Christmas many years ago and just started to edc it last week. Perfect timing for this video and love they are still making their products in France. Thanks
If they made a fixed blade no.8-12 I would buy multiple and use them for hunting. I have used a no.8 as a bird and trout knife before and it’s perfect other than cleaning it is not easy.
My number 10 and number 10 corkscrew arrived today. I am going out right now and get a number 8 and the spook and fork kit! Now that the weather is warming up, I'll be looking forward to getting it out in the woods!
My Opinel story. Took the family to the North Georgia mountains on vacation. The boys couldn't find the latest whiz bang folder they wanted and after a long search headed back to the car. I saw the Opinel display and thought these were the coolest old school knives I'd ever seen. The boys came back in and we all got one. They were just amazed with the mechanism.
I must have over 20 of these. My favourite? The #6 in Walnut/Inox, imo the best ultralight hiking knife you can buy at any price, giving proper all-round 3" blade cutting ability at just under 1 ounce. The backspine will raise an awesome spark from a ferro rod (including when the knife is closed!) and is just the right profile for scaling a fish too. Not a 'supersteel' for sure, but takes a screaming good edge and very easy to sharpen in the field. The walnut wood swells less than the standard beech wood when wet, and the Inox is more corrosion resistant than the Carbone.
I actually stopped a jail break with that #7 once. It was on a visitation day and several inmates rushed one of the visitation hall doors. I threw that knife and buried it into a door frame right in front of the lead man. It so shocked them all that they backed up down the hall into the cell block. I never said a word, just retrieved my knife , put it into my pocket and signed in the next visitor. The Sheriff never chewed me out so apparently, no one ever told anybody about it. The #7 actually throws pretty good with a little practice.
I probably have 60 some odd knives, and I rotate weekly and sometimes daily, but by far my most used knife is the Opinel No. 6 HA! MY cheese knife, fruit knife everything knife:) I have the No. 8 no doubt but I love that little number 6 ya'll:) HA!
My Opinel number 8 I’ve had for over 20 years and has always held its sharpness to the point I’m sure I could shave with it. Awesome knives and I agree everyone should have an Opinel.
I got two 8s and two 5s this year. One each in stainless and carbon. None of them arrived shaving sharp, but they were decently sharp. I could some of the edge was done sloppily though on portions of the blade.
I’ve got a bandaid on my thumb and pinky right now Thumb from oiling a Moritaka kiritsuke (was in a rush) and the pinky from a Civivi Element sheepsfoot in my pocket. It had opened and I sliced on it. One of us!!
i carry and use the #7 seems to fit better in my pocket, but more people need to try these knives. i think most folks shy away do to its low price, but they preform so much better than the cost indicates.
My favorite is the #9. And I made myself a hybrid #8 and #9 walnut handle/carbon blade. The Opinel site shows the model number is the length of the blade in centimeters.
Can i get a replacement v- lock ferrule from Opinel to replace one which cracked and fell apart on my knife? I am in the UK Nice review, i have no 6-12, inox and carbone, the oyster, the garden, and the saw all are superb. I used to dismiss them and bought what i thought were better knives but i eventually purchased one and wow was i surprised, i use them all the time now, so versatile, so light and sharp. I can see great uses for that little one especially for leatherwork. Thanks, stay safe from UK

My no9 has drop point thumb stud and pocket clip. My no7; I chopped down to a little carving knife. I think Joseph opinels dad did not like his pocket knife. Didn’t want him to make it. 😆

The chestnut/garlic Is really cool. Years ago I shortened the blade of a carbon steel nr.8 with a dremel in order to get that design. I use it for whittling and it's great, thanks to the carbon blade. It would be cool of Opinel made a line of knives for whittling.
Bought my Opinel Nr. 10 as a stainless Version in 1994 for Vacation. Using it since then as a kitchen knife. Sometimes for something else. Still sharp and in good working condition despite some lack of servicing.
The mushroom knife is my prized opinel. I also like my camping utensil knife. I have customized many of the traditional and I love all of them. You can put a hair popping sharp edge on them.

I’ve seen the fork and spoon recently. Didn’t know they work with the #8, so off to get them. The picnic set looks very appealing and would make a perfect gift.
Best cheap EDC pocket knife in the world. I've had one in my pocket for 50 years now, bought my first when I was eight. Shaving sharp and so cheap it doesn't matter if you lose it, which means, of course, that I still have every one I've owned. Ever noticed that you only lose the expensive ones?
Dear Opinel: I love your knives. I have a few and I carry my #8 every day. Pleas release some of your premium wood models with a high carbon blade. I prefer it to stainless and would buy three or four if I could find them with a high carbon blade. Thanks- Kyle
Just what do you mean by "Bushcrafty extras"? Opinel is great for bushcraft. I used to carry an opinel 6 with me along with my fixed blade. Whenever I went into the woods. But check out the number 12 with the tick removal tool and built in whistle.

Kind of a weird idea for Opinel, but also VERY Opinel; What if y'all made a hatchet/hand axe that unfolded into a full length axe? It would take some beefing up, but I'd bet a LOT of $ on it selling.
I’ve had a number eight for almost 35 years - love the carbone blade- it sharpens easily and has a wonderful patina. I agree everyone needs to own at least one.

An Opinel fixed blade would be sweet!
Their paring knife is pretty much that.
If they made a fixed blade no.8-12 I would buy multiple and use them for hunting. I have used a no.8 as a bird and trout knife before and it’s perfect other than cleaning it is not easy.

I have a number 08 gardeners model and it only weighs 1.3 ounces (37 grams) I have a same sized lock knife and it weighs 5.5 ounces (158 grams) Best to keep the Opinel dry though.
Best regards. 🙃
for the datation the stamp on the handle and the stamp on the blade has different
the best french trad knives opinel douk douk and laguiole! and the oldest nontron since 1775
Opinel #7 because I’m super cool 😎
The woods on my knives are not living organisms.
thanks for watching
I'm one of the 300 million. Use my no.8 multiple times a day, every day, without fail.
The no. 8 is a great EDC
@@SMKWcom I solely use it for food along with a folding knife and fork. It's perfect for the task, from prep to plate.
Kind of a weird idea for Opinel, but also VERY Opinel; What if y'all made a hatchet/hand axe that unfolded into a full length axe? It would take some beefing up, but I'd bet a LOT of $ on it selling.
An Opinel Ax... we would like to see that
I love them
💯
I carry the #9 🎉
#9 with rule 9 just makes sense 👍
@@SMKWcom when I bought the number 9 it was cheaper than the number 8 so I said why not?
the virobloc has been on Opinel since 1955 , and knocked de opinel butt is named "the savoyard's blow"
Your Correct about that
Nifty.
The ' knock ' as you call it is the coup de savoyard.
Opinel the best ....after Nontron and Laguiole 😏😊😊
Thanks for watching and all of them make awesome blades
Vav price
The Bugout has a ways to go. Lol
