Thanks Jerry & Lorri for all your great stories. We love it :) My mexican wife (Gdl) and me (German) lived and worked in MEXICO for 9 years and we are thinking to go back to MEXICO (we are now in USA) in retirement in the next years. Your videos give us a great guideline for the next steps. Year end we might visit Ajijic to feel this community. Thanks and keep on !
2008 was a VERY tough year. It literally was a "perfect storm" where basically any type of investment crashed. I was lucky like you -- I held on to my investments and all rebounded. HOWEVER, I did do one thing (I was in my mid 40s), I did get a financial adviser and was told to do 60% stocks / 40% bonds instead of being heavily invested in equities (which I was at the time - I was doing my own investing). 2008 was a wake-up call for me - I seeded professional help. I basically froze and didn't do anything in 2007-2009 while my portfolio tanked. There was nothing I could do. Again - LOVE your videos. AND MAYBE in 2019 I will make it down to Ajijic for a week with a buddy of mine. Hopefully, we can take you two out to dinner.
I enjoyed hearing your background and how you came to live in Mexico. A few points I got out of it is, don't pay for an advisor who is only advising after the fact. If you are invested in quality investments, hang on, it will come back. Finally, live within your own means, because you never know what the future will bring you.
You two are so joyful, happy and appreciative about life that I look forward to meeting you some day. I've been exploring retirement in Mexico for some years and still 4 years away to the transition. Visited San Miguel, Ajijic and Moreila before I found your videos but now because of your videos I feel more enthusiastic about retirement in Mexico. Many thanks for all your great information and enthusiasm.

Wonderful story, so nice to know more about you. This happened to my husband and I, lost 70% of our portfolio. Thought are retirement would be ok till 2008. You 2 are the bomb! 🌷
We all lost tons of money in 2008. Now no more stocks right? It was a good time to buy real estate at the crash. And if you bot stock right after the crash, if you had known that, you would've made a lot of money. You can make 8% interest in a bank account now in Mexico, right? Did you buy a house in Mexico? Hey thanks Jerry and Lori! Great story and videos. Maybe see you in Mexico.
The company I worked for went belly-up in 2010 and took our company retirement with them. It has been difficult since, just living off Social Security, after my savings was used up. I own my home and that has been my blessing. I am thinking of selling it and moving to Mexico. The only thing that keeps me from doing so is that my children are spread out throughout the states and I would not get to see them as much as I do now.

I fully understand what you are saying about unexpected investment losses. My IRA has been managed by advisors on Barron’s top 100 list. Guess what? The only thing that saved my IRA from the Great Recession was that I lived long enough for it to recover to pre Recession levels. I think the big downside comes at age 70 1/2 when you are required to make distributions to meet the RMD. If there is a market downturn you have to take the required percentage out or be penalized. This accelerates your losses. Maybe a ROTH IRA is the way to go. I’ve been retired 20 years. During that time the Market shocks have been...Tech Bubble...Fed raising rates....Fed lowering rates....sub prime mortgage crisis..etc.
Yes, I just got temporal visa , because the permanente visa wants me to have $2,600 a month income, which I don’t have, just cash which they don’t look at as income of course. I too lost half of my investment portfolio value but was not in retirement yet. The following ten years have been difficult being self employed and a homeowner in the US. I too stuck it out and have seen a nice rebound since. However I couldn't continue to invest as I could prior to the recession and haven't been able to accumulate as much as I had hoped as I near retirement. Trying to stick it out a while longer as much as I can. Glad I didn't panic and sell! I wonder where it was that you traveled in the motor home?

Why do you keep telling people they can live there for 600 a month. Don't you have to prove to the Mex Gov that you have guaranteed 2,000 a month income to get a long term visa?
If you want to live here on a temporary visa or a permanent visa you have to show the Mexican government you have anywhere between $1400 a month to $1700 a month each person. But if you come down with the tourist visa you do not have to show the Mexican government any income so you can Live here six months a year then go back and renew you're tourist visa for another six months this is how people are LIVING on $600 a month.
