The titmouse and the fox: Soft fur for lining a nest |

- Occasionally our cameras catch things that we wouldn't believe if we hadn't seen them ourselves. This is one of those things.
A fox snoozing in the sunshine outside a den was being disturbed by a tiny titmouse, who seemed intent on doing everything she could to be irritating. She pecked at the fox, jumped on his back, and launched little kicks at his side, and every time the fox stirred and tried to get her to leave him in peace, she flitted out of reach. And then came back.
What on earth was the titmouse thinking? She could so easily have wound up being lunch.
Turns out this is what she was thinking: "This is a very furry fox. Fox fur makes a nice, soft nest lining. Surely this fox doesn't need all his fur? Summer is coming, after all. Surely he won't mind if I take some?". And that's what she did. Once she'd established that the fox wasn't going to kill her, she went to work plucking out fur and the fox let her do it! We were astonished. She hopped around on the fox's back, harvested a beakful of fur, and took off with it.
Eventually, the fox got up and moved to sit on a tall stump to consider his next move. The titmouse flew up and sat beside him. The best of friends, apparently.
The next day, the fox was sleeping in the exact same spot the and the titmouse returned to harvest a little more fur.

We had three dogs. My wife would brush them then put the fur out on the lawn. It didn't take long before birds from all over were collecting premium nesting material.
Very smart. We learn a lot from our commenters. Thank you.
That's such a nice thing to do.
@@garyboyle695 it was fun watching them.
Ive been saving cat fur balls 😂
Are you my grandpa and grandma? 😂 tk
The fox is shedding its winter undercoat, just when the birds are starting to nest. Fox doesnt mind the bird giving a groom.
So it seems.
This titmouse can come pluck loose fur from my shiba when he blows his coat twice a year. I can use all the help I can get!
beautiful symbiotic relationship
Amazing video! Jackdaws do this with sheep in the uk in spring too. Its getting warmer - mammals are shedding and birds are nesting! Nature is efficient 😅
Really? That's brilliant. Makes perfect sense. Wool would be a great nesting material.
And it's almost like the birds get excited it's fun. The squirrels get greedy with it, but, our dogs are shedding machines
The titmouse and the fox have the same coloring, so the fur matches her decor! That's just amazing. She's lucky that wasn't a ringtail after seeing what the ringtail did to the yellow jacket!
Yes! Isn't that funny. They do have the same coloring.
It's spring, he is shedding, it works for both! ❤😊
Yes, very true.
So cute interaction between two different life forms
Only FOX FUR will do to line her nest! She has impeccable taste!
She does, and did you notice that the titmouse and the fox are pretty much color-coordinated. Gray and soft orange. Very tasteful indeed.
Thats such a cool fox
It was!
Was ?
As in the video
It’s like the episode of SpongeBob when him and Patrick take Sandy’s fur 😂
“Hopefully u got some ticks” - fox
They are both so adorable! I also live in Texas, neighborhood has tons of mature trees. We have the most diverse # of birds! LOVE the apps Merlin & Ebird to identify & keep track. My retirement guilty pleasure! I love nature right outside the patio!😂❤
You are very lucky. We also use Merlin and we've learned an enormous amount about the birds we're seeing and hearing in the backyard. It's fantastic.
That’s gonna be the softest nest!
Wow. That's amazing. And the fox just kind of ignores him.
I don't care about the reasons why this happens, to me, it is just hilarious 😂
I get dog fur from a local groomers and spread it on my lawn it attracts greater variety of birds than any bird feeder ever could, love watching them gathering it all up.
I guess that’s one way to loose the winter fur 😁
The nerve!😊
they gunna be some comfy babies with all that padding
Had my cat jump up on my desk while I was watching this. Seemed to be attracted to the bird.
Ha! Maybe s/he is.
Your voice is very calm and softly spoken, very beautiful, thank you for the video and your lovely explanation.😊
Birds used to do this to my cat 😂😂😂
He didn’t eat them? Not a real cat!
Now that’s a cool cat lol
Lol like that episode of SpongeBob when he and Patrick were plucking Sandy's fur bc they were trapped under the dome and needed to keep warm.
That coat is beautiful
Great! We love our wildlife! Keep it coming!!!
What a beautiful fox
1. Its facinating how an8mals can develop casual relationships like this. Reminds me of how ravens help wolves in their hunts
2. Also WHO TF COMES UP WITH THESE NAMES FOR BIRDS??
Good question. Lots of birds have "tit" in their name. It's Middle English for "small bird". Here, it's paired with "mouse", which is a corruption of Middle English "mase", which meant "tiny".
What beautiful creatures
oh that's great. Probably symbiotic like a great way to clear that shedding coat.
Probably feels like a nice grooming!
My husky has let birds to this to her before. But she has also eaten birds before.
The foxes definitely eat birds. We were really surprised by this little titmouse.
Every nest. For miles around… is lined with Golden Retriever fluff!
What a great moment you captured, you didn’t quite loop the short though. Oh well.
Loop the short? We'll have to research that. I confess that we are new to creating shorts. Thanks for commenting.
OK, I checked this out. Creators don't control looping. It happens (or doesn't happen) at the viewers end. Right click on the screen and check LOOP at the top of the popup menu. However, we actually would not want our shorts to loop endless if we did have control over the setting.
Probably feels good af for the fox.. who doesnt like pets?
How beautiful and how efficient is nature, I guess everything you need is provided by nature , we can see it in how other animals co exist beautifully together, just using the right amount of what they need unlike us human 😢
Wow, my dog is so less tolerant of me picking something out of his fur in comparison to this fox. It’s amazing how chill (and adorable) that fox is.
It is surprising. We agree. Many people in the comments have wondered if the fox might have actually enjoyed it.
beautiful animals, I love them both
Yes, we do too.
This is so cute. 🥰
had to watch again, great footage
I never have to comb my husky again!
Love my Titmouse, my GSD could use a good plucking!
I've always found this extraordinary.
Adorable
That mouse has the best bird costume ever.
Very brave for that bird
Nature is the only true creator.
I love grey fox.
This is me with my old lab’s undercoat lol Adorable❤
Beautiful ❤
Incredible footage.
Thank you, Tonto. The fox lay down right in front of one of our cameras. It was very lucky.
Bird moves at 5 frames per second
They're busy little birds, titmouses.
Jesus have Mercy on these precious animals and Bless those who help them
Amazing how animals can work together❤
True, and surprising.
Why haven't I discovered this channel before? It's so awesome. Thank you 😊
Thank you!! Comments like this make it all worthwhile for us.
Today we'll be painting a Happy little fox.
Is that a Bob What's-his-name thing? We really need to watch some of his stuff.
😂❤🎉 😊love it.
That is absolutely adorable.
Titmice are so cute 🥰
They are! Beautiful little birds.
Sweetie Pie Fox. 🦊
Here in the Dolomites (North Italian moutains area) last fall a titmice nest has fallen from the pine tree close to the house: it was made from my Abruzzese shepherd's hair (a big white dog who is loosing tons of hair practically every time of the year), with a lovely moss finition
What a wonderful story! A pair of titmice made a nest in one of our nesting boxes about 2 weeks after we filmed this event, and after the chicks had fledged we cleared out the box and the nest had fox fur in it. So I think we must have had a few more snoozing and obliging foxes around who were happy donate fur to a good cause.
Interesting. Cozy nest right ?😊
Yes, very cozy.
Love these vids, man!
Thank you, Skip!
Beautiful nature is smart
softest nest ever
Aww a cute little fox 🦊
Favour for a favour that’s awesome
She cleaned him
I, myself have also been known to be somewhat of a titmouse from time to time.
Interesting...
Thats so cute
soooooo cool!
Нужно теплое гнездо - нарви с лисы!
Нормальный подход.
Точно.
"I will take this and this and this and this and this..."
Exactly.
Co-symbiosis at its best
😍
My old Rottweiler would lay out back and birds would do this. He never seemed to even notice.
I wonder if he quietly enjoyed it. This fox seemed pretty happy.
Love this video ❤ Thanks for sharing, it’s a gem 💎
My favorite scene, which we didn't include in the long version of the video, is the titmouse sitting beside the fox on the stump. Best of friends. Too funny.
Love it!!
Sounds like a daily thing my wife does 😂
I have two dogs that shed a lot. Ive been leaving the huge balls of fur out for our garden birds and now there are some golden retriever coloured nests in the trees around us 😂
Very, very nice.
Some have fur coats , some have fur apartments.
I live on a fairly remote mountain here in Allegheny County Maryland. We have pictures of birds eating what i guess are ticks off a red fox in our backyard
OK, that's fascinating. I wonder if it's scientifically recorded. That's real symbiosis, isn't it? This was a brave and opportunistic little nesting mama bird; symbiosis is a relationship
You sat there and waited. Doing NOTHING BUT WATCHING ! my kinda thing but my friends think I'm strange. What do they know eh?
We were a long way away. All of our cameras are operated remotely. Most of the time, all we can possibly do is watch. If we manage to see something about to happen that seems dangerous (a fox and a newborn fawn about to meet on a trail, or a coyote heading toward a raccoon family) we rush around making noise, but it's rare for us to be able to intervene. Not that we would have, here; the fox seemed pretty cool about being plucked.
If I lived in a tree I'd have a whole house made out of Foxes.
Nature is awesome
Thank you
So cool
The bird is probably taking shedded hair. I don't think the bird is pulling hair out
Well, maybe you're right. It certainly didn't appear to hurt the fox at all.
just need to borrow a few
❤❤❤
Symbiosis. Kool.
T-tit mouse?🤣
Yep. Titmouse. A species of small song bird.
Beautiful Music Peace
So cool!
I always put the dogs fur in the garden after a brush, and also when going on walks along farmers fields taking some of the sheeps wool that get caught in the barbed wire and putting that in the garden for the birds
That's great. What a good idea.
Whenever i brush my pet house rabbits, i leave the piles of fur for the birds to take for their nests. They never do though. I have dumb birds near me.
Maybe you need some different birds. But it's great that your wife leaves the rabbit fur out.
Amazing, Ill seek out the long video
The long video is great. The nice thing about the short is that we put in the final scene of the fox and the titmouse sitting together on the stump, best of friends. It's not in the long version.
😂Wise little bird!
natural comb
PATRICK ARE YOU CRAZY
SpongeBob in Sandy's habitat during winter situation
Beautiful
Brazen bird.
