What the game means to me is this: Trying to get to know someone you don’t know just through what they make says more about you than that person.

The main issue or any issue with a review or meaning creation of this game is that, by making connections between this game and Davey, aren’t you making the same mistake Davey made about coda. Davey assumed was going through turmoil due to his games, even though coda wasn’t. By making assumptions about Daveys depression through ‘the beginners guide’, you’re doing the same thing. You can learn new things about a game from its developer, but not necessarily the other way around

    • @B3RyL
      @B3RyL 6 лет назад +53

Here's the thing, it's OK to analyse and judge and give your honest opinion, as long as it stays in the realm of criticism. You shouldn't just take things into your own hands if you think someone is not doing a good job with their own creations, but you also shouldn't shy away from providing criticism or praise, because that's how artists grow.
You can't escape judgement, or criticism, or opinion. Those are just natural elements of living in a society, and you shouldn't shy away from them, you should learn from them. But what shouldn't happen is the situation we see in The Beginner's Guide: the critic "improving" and presenting the creator's work to the broader audience according to their own vision, not the creator's. Be it an internal struggle or a conflict between two people, just try and remember where your creativity comes from and don't let yourself or others take away that passion because of silly things like fame and public opinion.
And if you're like the Davey in the story, again, just remember that it's OK to give criticism, it's OK to have an opinion or an input, but it's not OK to act on it on your own accord and in the process destroy what made the work creative and unique in the first place.

His assumptions are plausible. Wreden has talked about how his emotional turmoil reflected on the Stanely Parable, so would it be wrong to think that the beginner's guide (a game in which Wreden assumes his friend is depressed or lost to help himself find meaning) was inspired by Wreden's real life personal struggles?

@@J25-p3h Its not wrong to think that, as long as you dont view it as "the true meaning" of the game. To me it said more about the of art But such is the nature of art. It has different meanings to different people.

The Beginner's Guide hooked me after 20 minutes and made me think a lot about what being a creator means long after I finished the game. The story is so deep, I'm sure it can be interpreted in many ways, but I believe you did an amazing job by adding your thoughts. 330 views for this great analysis is pretty sad, so I hope you'll get a bigger audience and that I find more friends who know this game, so I can slap this video in their faces. Nicely done, my friend :)

As much as I enjoy this video, I feel like it glosses over a lot of the important elements of the story that really emphasize the message of changing someone's work to give it a message. The lamp posts for example, were added by Davey, as were the various cheats and workarounds he added so that he could move on and show more of Coda's work.

    Hi, really enjoyed the video.
I've just finished the game and for me the labyrinth at the end is key. The spot that we rise from isn't a random spot but the centre of the labyrinth, if you look around the rest of the labyrinth this particular spot is different and significant.
In Jungian psychology the labyrinth is a key motif in the individual and collective unconscious, it represents a journey to find the self. The end of this journey is always to find the centre so that the labyrinth as a whole can be seen and contextualised.
Therefore I think that the game is about self actualisation or mindfulness. The key to finding happiness and contentedness is not through external validation or short term pleasure but finding your own centre and being content with life for what it is. I think the title is alluding to the idea that until you do this your life hasn't truly begun.
That's what I took away from this game but the beauty of games like this is that another person may take away something completely different.
In the next decade I think that computer games are going to finally be taken seriously as an art form and get the respect that they truly deserve.

And then you destroy the machine, and Davie is talking about the work becoming "self-destructive" and he has to step in and help, when he is very clearly the force doing the damage

I rather think the infinite maze is supposed to show that, while you may have thought there was an end, or a life goal, or some sort of meaning to our lives in general, life is actually just a meaningless journey. Our intuition deceives us and tells us that there must be a meaning, an end goal, right? But the sad truth is that we are all just walking through a maze, looking for an end that does not exist. There is only one way out of this maze, and it is death, this is symbolized by you walking into the beam and rising upward, finally realizing that there was no end the maze, and walking through the maze had absolutely no meaning in the long run.

Davey is Coda, as a game coder (Coda) this is the argument Davey had with himself as a game developer throughout the history of his game development career and personal projects. It's the man he was as a game designer vs the man he is as a professional and the horrible reality vs the dream and vision a story creater wants to tell with all of their works/efforts. We've all seen it...
Put yourself in Davey's place (in game) and then put yourself in Codas place (in game) as the young ambitious you that desired and then luckily broke into a job you thought fit you. Only to find out the deep-seated politics, and by extension dangers and hatred and all out lows that comes along with it and what it does to your body mind and psyche versus it not being a job in a passion that gives you the platform to express yourself tell a story reach out to other people and leave your mark/message with the populace.

Just played the Beginner's Guide, and the question of whether Coda is real or not is irrelevant to the brilliance of this game (or more accurately, experience). This is art. This is art that talks about what art is or is not, and probably has introduced concepts about art that many gamers are not aware of. Such as 'death of the author' - that what the author intended in a piece of art is separate from the art itself. Art can take on meanings for people that were never the intention of the author, and that can be powerful. Davey takes on the role of the 'unreliable narrator' in this, and while he seems 100% trustworthy at the beginning, Coda is clearly angry with Davey for justifiable reasons (lying and stealing), and Davey simply won't allow himself to understand it.
There would really be no way to make this piece of art, which says what it does, and have Coda be a real person. Enjoy this art for what it is, and it's invitation to think about art, and the messiness of human relationships and emotions. The funny thing is that the character of Coda understands this.

  • @Sam_Hue

Trying to decipher the beginner’s guide is like trying to understand the fundamental concept of language, which itself is bounded towards the concept of communication.
There are no Authoritative ways to understand it. Everyone consumes them differently and creates wildly different interpretations.
This game single-handedly shows the limitations of text, and the dangerous consequences of misrepresenting them.
Because of how the game is presented, you cannot conclusively interpret the message behind it all without knowing both perspectives.

This is the conclusion I came to when I played. Although I think you missed a big part of it, these are two people, they just share a body. To begin "Coda would put lamp posts in the games from now on" (some of this is paraphrased) then at the end "Would you stop putting lamp posts in my games -Coda" These are the same person, one of them just exists in memory now. The door puzzle is important in this, because if you think about how if you go through that transitional period enough are you still you. This is the replacing every part in a car way of thinking. you are there but your motivations, thoughts, and feelings are different. "Coda never made another game" This tells me that he thinks although he shares a name and life with this person this is no longer him and the motivation that inspired these games is gone forever.

There is no point to a lot of the "games" you play in beginner guide.. and maybe after he got all the attention he though he wanted or needed to be know he was successful..he realized he didn't actually want it and that maybe.. he just like making prison games...maybe he just enjoyed doing it for himself but now he has to please everyone and if he is to fail.. he'll end up letting himself down .. when before he didn't have all that pressure to please everyone with the games he made...and it was just about making the games..

Is it possible that "The Beginner's Guide," is a metaphor for life itself? Or at least, the life we live before we realize our truth worth? The Beginner's Guide is the point where you reach the "end" of the tutorial of life, having learned all its basic elements before embarking on the real journey? The metaphor of life being a game is very good starting point. Its the literal tutorial. The puzzle was a need to understand the importance of repetition and the basic understanding that "practice makes perfect," in no matter what it is you choose to do in life. The "jails" were metaphors for being stuck in the tutorial, and one can't break out until they understand and fully live the experiences needed to move forward. Finally, some of the puzzles, like the invisible maze and the 999,999 digit number code was an indication that you need both patience and perseverance to proceed. And finally, the part where you come to a dead-end in the tower doesn't mean you failed. It means you need to start over and try again, because you missed something. Like coming to a dead-end in a real-life maze. This idea, combined with the lyrics of the end song as the credits roll are a clear indication of this if you think hard enough about it. If you have come this far and read this message, perhaps it is a clear sign that YOU are ready to take that next step in life and become the successful person you were meant to become. Its your time now. Go be the amazing and happy person you deserve to be and that the world needs.

My personal belief, given all the evidence gathered during the making of this video, is that Coda as described in the game doesn't exist, but I don't think Coda is completely fake either. I've listened to interviews with the creator of The Beginner's Guide, and he tells stories of letting his fame complex ruin many close friendships he had. Clearly the creator lost someone close to him, was that person Coda? Impossible to say, but I believe the story of the game is true, but the details may have been exaggerated for the sake of story telling. Thanks for watching!

Idk. I feel like by explaining how you think Davey feels you kinda missed the point of the game, atleast partially. Good video but I feel you missed the mark. It is years old at this point, so maybe it's a video you don't look fondly on anymore. But still.

this game bored me to death. a good premise but absolutely abysmal execution.

It's less of a normal game and more of a experience and story

@@crsttn1613 oh yeah ofc thats what i expected. i am always fine with an on rails story / experience as long as the story intrigues me lol. but here, none of the twists had any impact on me, the narrator just tells you what is happening and then suddenly "oH the nArraTor haS a sKeweD perSepCtive aNd is actUally wRong" while it plays pretentious sad music lmao. walking simulators dont bother me, i just need a reason to keep holding down w.

If you go back into the game with the twist in mind you can see from the beginning that something isn't right, maybe not the start but as you get to the middle the narrator shifts the story to himself more then coda
