- The Scottish war of Independence was a conflict fought between the kingdom of England and the Kingdom of Scotland as Edward the 1st of England sought to subjugate the kingdom.
After the Scots defeat at the battle of Dunbar Edward, the 1st of England or Longshanks now seeks to subjugate the Scots.
However, two men raise up to try and save Scotland from Longshanks.
Part two of a series of video's on the first war of Scottish independence and the History of Scotland.

Because most of them owned lands in England and France which were areas controlled by the English Crown so their allegiance was split.
@Stevie Moore Tennant's is a brand of beer. I believe you meant Tenants. But yes, they were granted lands to control and tax on behalf of the crown.

@Stevie Moore Well it depends on how you look at it. Does that mean every 'average joe' was a slave in medieval times across the world? You're correct in saying that nobles did own land, whether it's been given to them from a higher Lord/King or inherited it from family. When I said 'our people picked Wallace' it's a figure of speech. Hundreds if not thousands joined Wallace freely, he was a very minor noble who would normally go unnoticed, we shouldn't have heard about him at all and that's why individuals took up arms and supported Wallace.
There was absolutely no obligation to join Wallace and as far as I'm aware Wallace did not force individuals to fight as this was a rebellion.
The medieval period in Scotland is extremely interesting and over the hundreds of years history has been filtered and it can prove difficult at times to get the accurate picture as so many individuals have different opinions and interpretation of what happened back then. Its deep history indeed and I'm certainly not challenging you I'm merely pointing out that opinions are different and our outlook on medieval Scotland can also differ depending on what you choose to read and study.
@Stevie Moore Fear indeed was key. One thing I'm sure we can both agree on is screw living back then! Growing up I'd say how cool it must have been but when studying the topic and rapidly changed my mind. There's thousands of books on medieval Scotland and you form your own opinions and morals when reading what life was like. Dark and violent times indeed but it wasn't always like that, again this depends on who you speak with and what you read.

I loved Outlaw King. It was never going to be 100% accurate but I appreciated the attempt at least. Some seriously braw scenes in there but was left disappointed that Mackenzie cut the Wallace scene. I know there's zero evidence (that I'm aware) of the Bruce and Wallace ever meeting even though both men were alive at the same time. I'd love to see the original 4hr cut, wishful thinking sadly.

It's like all words, isn't it? Pronounced differently by different people in different places.
And before any might invoke it, I reject the claim of monopoly of correctness by virtue of residence at such and such a named thing. For those from elsewhere, there is a place of which they talk, known as... Which is as legitimate as any other understanding.
That said, you're right, it's pronounced by me n many others, inc. locals, as berik.
But I just never feel only one way of saying a name is correct.

'Berwick' is pronounced like 'Warwick', also I believe the correct pronunciation of Andrew Moray is Murray like John Comyn is Cumin. Due to medieval vowel shifts.

Correct, the original bridge could only accompany 2 horsemen at a time making it about 2 to 3 rows of troops crossing the bridge...

Weren't Moray that guy, in the movie Braveheart, who abandoned Wallace at Falkirk and later Wallace killed him in on his bed with a ball and chain? Totally no justice in that portrayal!
Andrew de Moray wasn't depicted in _Braveheart_ , the character you're probably thinking of is that of the greedy, treacherous Scottish noble *Mornay*. Him and Lochlan got dealt with for their treachery. Also Braveheart was not historically accurate at all.

England Kings were battered by the Normans in 1066 there was no English invasion as the English were wiped out it was a Norman invasion😂

In Braveheart at the Battle of Falkirk, King Edward refuses to use his archers and says "arrows cost money, the dead cost nothing". I feel like that's paying homage to the real Battle of Sterling. The English had 1,000 longbow against an army of mostly unshielded light infantry Scots. Why not just shoot at them? Ah, because Cressingham wanted to save money. Fat bastard became a belt for Wallace, a fitting end to an incompetent tightwad who didn't want to waste anything, and in the end the Scots made sure not to waste any bit of his flesh.

The jack - called gambesone - was worn yes (basic armor), and some were yellow, but obviously not all of them were yellow. It's just in the game.

Why are Scottish English and French observers accounts of the battle all different from each other's .
The French didn't use the info for propaganda and wasn't discovered until centuries after the battle,
Even though the French had no love for the English the accounts seem simple logistics, numbers involved who moved against who , the outcome, nothing elaborate or fanciful, just simple facts , or at least more realistic than either Scottish or English.
Irish didn't fight for Scotland, they hated each other , English did have Norman Irish (Anglo/ Irish )as some historians call them , fighting against the Scott's.
The Scots were fierce fighters and very hardy people especially the Highlanders, who were the nearest thing to the ancient Celtic warriors who painted themselves with symbols using woad, a plant based dye used for clothing.
The didn't paint themselves like Celts as depicted in braveheart, that was all mel Gibson's idea as anyone who watched his interviews about the movie will have seen,
In one interview hes asked why they were shown painted with woad & why they wore tartan kilts which didn't exist for another few centuries, and Gibson obviously fed up about the unrealistic things in the movie just angrily replies why does everyone want to focus on the negative, the few inaccuracies instead of enjoying a great movie,
The interviewer replied when making a movie about true historical events, especially when its something everyone in Britain especially Scotland is passionate & proud of ,gets taught & knows every detail about it, and then see a movie which is something completely different from the factual historical events, its natural people are going to ask why , why no bridge at the battle of sterling bridge,
Why wearing tartan kilts, which didn't exist
Show the Irish joining Wallace , which didn't happen,
Portraying Wallace as a peasant when he was son of a knight and landowner.
Sleeping with the French princess, who at the time was a toddler,
Showing the king throwing gaviscon out of the castle window
Which didn't happen,
And........
It's a long list of errors,
But most of the Scots are unhappy about not having the bridge
Because Wallace was clever the way he used it to his advantage and won a famous victory,
Without the bridge no victory would have been possible.
Lots of incorrect stuff here.
Wallace was portrayed with a blue dye because he was a pict Knight, picts are from the North and East coasts (Wallace being from the latter). My family are of pict and viking decent.
You mentioned the Irish not fighting with the Scottish, that's not true. The gallowglass were a known unit from Ireland who fought as mercenarys within Scotland.

The Vikings lived in the east coast side of Scotland, the early Irish ruled western Scotland, and the isle of man and everything within that sea region, long before the Wallace failed, Robert the Bruce WAS the real brave heart, he actually won Scottish independence from the English and it stayed Scottish until James 1st came from Scotland to join England and Scotland after Elizabeth 1st died without any children, James was her nephew, son of Mary queen of Scots. In 1602

Back then Scotland was split up into picts, celts, Scots and nords... The celts were very influential on Scottish history so it's pretty ridiculous to say there were no Irish/Scottish (celts) involved in that battle.

@@Jack-xy4fy your right lots of incorrect information is in that movie, pretty much everything, the French princess was only a baby and had never left France , let alone have an affair with Wallace, Wallace wasn't a poor man who lived in a Scottish mud hut, because as you said he was a knight as was his father as well as a wealthy land owner, his portrait hangs in one of the Scottish castles ( his father I mean, painted well before young Wallace grew up and started the rebellion) Scottish didn't wear kilts because they didn't exist for another 400 or more years, neither did clan tartan, they didn't paint themselves in woad , that was a English Celtic thing that Caesar wrote about in mid 1st century bc , museums in England are full of Celtic woad grinders, all that stopped not long after the Romans invaded under the emperor Claudius, who managed to invade what became England almost a century after Caesar tried and failed twice.
If you're Scottish you should know about the writer Scot who after the jacobite rebellion wrote ( around the 16th or 17th century ) about the Scottish wearing clan tartan kilts during Wallace time , he basically invented what the Scottish later became, a romantic writer who lied, the clan tartan didn't appear until after the Tudor era = 16th century .
The original "tartan ' was something the original English Celtic people made , a thick woollen cloth which the Romans loved and traded back across the continent, along with hooded cloaks, one Roman emperor original name is almost forgotten because he loved and wore the English /British hooded cloak called a Caracalla , his actual name was ;

Interesting but the appalling pronunciation of Scottish names spoils it a bit. Not 'Moraaay' but much shorter 'Moray' for example. You even got 'Lanark' wrong which is unbelievable as it is such a simple word.
