  • For two decades, various American leaders have tried to counter Russia’s aggressive foreign policy through a conciliatory approach. But strategic narcissism blinded those who hoped for warm relations with Russia because they underestimated the power of ideology, emotion, and aspiration that drove Vladimir Putin’s strategy toward the United States and Europe.

Blah blah blah "Russia's aggressive foreign policy". The USA promised Gorbachev they wouldn't try to recruit former Soviet countries into NATO. Now we literally have nuclear weapons in Poland. Could you remind me whose foreign policy is aggressive???

Virulent Russophobe and NATO war hawk McMaster doesn't tell us why an almost unknown former KGB operative all of a sudden emerged as the leader of Russia in 1999. It was a reaction to NATO's war of aggression against the FRY earlier that year, which ended with the ethnic cleansing of most of the Serb population of Kosovo. It has been the aggressiveness of NATO which made Putin Russia's leader and has led to the current tragic situation. Let's remember that Russia was not involved in any war outside its borders until NATO's terrible decision to put Georgia and Ukraine on a path to NATO membership in April 2008. Since then Russia has been at war with both countries but only with those countries. If NATO had respected those countries' neutral status, it is likely none of these wars would have happened. Putin is a nasty nasty man and at his age, he is obviously not long for power. However, I am really skeptical that when he leaves the scene, McMaster will be encouraging serious negotiations with Putin's successor to normalize relations and potentially re-establish Ukraine's borders. A NATO warhawk always needs to have an enemy to counter and Russia seems to be his chosen foe. I hope that I am wrong. I remain (faintly) hopeful.
