An excellent player on a set where Canopus reproduced what classic jazz drums should sound like! So why was a hole was cut in the bass drum’s resonant head? It’s rare that a jazz drummer does this, as it deadens the TRUE sound of the wood used(a Canopus obsession!). A mic placed in front of a “closed” head reflects the true personality of the BD. A hole for the BD mic is typically used in rock/funk/pop music recordings for a focused dead sounding “Thud”.
