Probably don't need to see drilling and soldering but the assembly technique would be interesting. Suggestion: Take the volume and tone knobs to someone who does insert work and get abalone pieces fit to those to match the pick-ups. Don't ever play this in a darkened nightclub where people have access to the stage... someone will trip over it, having not seen it. You are looking VERY happy here DB. Looking forward to the results.

Really cool build,I have something similar.Couple of years ago,I turned my old, beat up,late 90's Yamaha Pacifica into a Frankenstein -Superstrat with the help of a buddy of mine, who does these projects all the time.We took the Yamaha, alder body stripped it completely down, refinished it in a cool light metallic blue.We got a Warmoth neck, quartesawn maple/ebony fretboard, compound readius, stainless steel jumbo frets.GOTOH/Wilkinson locking tuners and VS100 tremolo, like the one Andy Timmons has on his Ibanez. My friend sculped the neck heel and made the cutaway deeper for better access to the low frets. For the electronics we put in a S.Duncan JB/Classic Stacked Plus/Cool Rails combo with a 5-way blade and an additional mini-switch,in order to split the JB separately.(with the switch on,you have only the outer coil of the JB,on position one, with the switch off, full humbucker)
That thing sounds and plays fantastic,I would put it up against any boutique superstrat.

      +greekfreak1980 That sounds amazing!!

    • @greekfreak1980

My friend, also build a Jake E. Lee inspired superstrat, for one of his students. The kid is a big Jake E.Lee fan and was GASing for that white sign.model that Charvel sells for a ridiculous price. They used again a Warmoth neck and a second hand American Strat body, they found online for dirt cheap.Electronics same as in the original guitar(S.Duncan JB and 2 DiMarzio singlecoils) and the fixed bridge version of the Hipshot, you got.
Again, the result is a pro-level guitar, which plays and sounds amazing, for a fraction of what Charvel sells the official sign. model.

Yea Darrell, showing the wiring workup and the soldering are important to us doing it ourselves. Especially with the Ultimate Epiphone build, the wiring is one of the key areas we need help. The Epi LP Custom Pro (I bought a well-used 2015 ebony & gold to do this rebuild) has quick connects and of course 3 push/pull pots (both volumes and one tone to phase shift). The wiring is perhaps key to success here, as I have found more than one wiring diagram for these. Not trying to harp on this but if I am going to go to someone to pre-wire it, I might just as well have a Luthier do all of it. I understand if you cannot do the wiring work yourself, but you could film someone doing it. Just a thought.
That said, your tutorials and reviews are great and you ARE making a difference for us out here. Thanks again, Darrell and let me be one of the last to wish you a Happy and Prosperous New Year.

I have been building, modifying, and repairing guitars for 33 years now.
It is very fulfilling to select your own parts and assemble them into a great instrument.
The chief attributes needed are patience and attention to details. Of course, it's fun also.
Good luck, and the final instrument should be excellent. All guitar players should try this.

dying to see what it sounds like. HOWEVER its almost not fair seeing as how these are amazingly high quality part. The trick would be to put together a high end sounding guitar with cheap parts! Say under $100 total? Maybe $200 max if 100 is not doable. Next challenge for you lol

I have these tuners. They needed a fairly thin headstock to install them. The shortest tuners in set did not have enough room to thread the string through. I had to sand down the neck to make it thinner and refinish it make them fit. Curious if you will have similar problem.
I would say I thought a super strat had a locking trem. But I think I would rather see how this hip shot setup goes together!
Thank you for the videos Darrell!

    • @DarrellBraunGuitar
      @DarrellBraunGuitar  6 лет назад

+bwgti I test fit mine today. Lots of clearance. I wonder what happened with yours?

    • @bwgti
      @bwgti 6 лет назад

Cool. Thanks for the response Darrel.
Who knows. Looking at the Hipshot box it looks like to make a staggered set they use tuners with different post lengths and sell them as a boxed set. Maybe this box was an odd one.
I really like the tuners! And it was the sort of neck that figuring out the the tuner install was a welcome challenge. Not a deal breaker!
Need to go watch part 2 now!

I know this is a 3 year old video, but I enjoy the full build process. I don't care if it's long, people can easily skip ahead if it's something their not interested in but the whole thing is there for the rest of us. One of the reasons I like the whole process is because when I'm working on my guitar, it's always the small things that frustrate you and you can go watch a detailed video and find out the small thing you did wrong. Short videos barely cover the basics and edit out the part that I seem to always need...

I'd love to see every bit of this build from start to finish. Personally, all my builds are done with budget eBay parts and random Craigslist bodies, so seeing the differences during the build on a guitar where no expense was spared would be really cool to me. There are bound to be issues that arise from using the cheap parts I do that don't happen through your process.

Hi Darrell, I've built a few parts strats and some are hit and miss. the real art is the actual setup, neck pocket, neck angle, string height, neck relief, nut string height etc. It is the difference between a good parts strat and a bad one. I would love to see the entire process. I have two that are ok and two that are nice and it would be really good to see how another person approaches these details.

I’m currently making my own so I’d love to see more in depth. Hopefully before my neck and body arrive in the next few months :)
Went with warmoth for body and neck and obsidian wiring and fender pickups for the electronics. Doesn’t have to be painstaking detail but a peak at putting things together and any tips you have about putting those certain parts or pieces together would be very cool.

Build? Assembling is the correct term, you're not actually "building" anything. Picking out parts and screwing them together doesn't count as a build, sorry. To use the word build infers actual skill and craftsmanship on a level far higher than is required to simply put parts together. Have some respect for the people who possess the skill and knowledge to actually build things for real.

+Jason T. You mean like hitting start on a CNC machine? Is that what you mean by skill and craftsmanship - cuz that's how all guitar parts are "built" 😉

I too would like to see all of the build drilling, soldering final setup and adjustments. I have done 3 builds, using nicely beat up standard squier strats as a base. These are good for me since they are full body thickness at 1.75 inches.

The hipshot contour is the best 2-point tremolo ive ever played. I put one on my Fender Jeff Beck Strat and its such a huge upgrade. The tone is so much more full and it sustains a lot better. I wont say the stock Fender trem is bad, but its not in the same league as the Hipshot. And their customer service is crazy good.

I tell people that building guitars (especially strat types) are musician adult Legos. You choose which neck and body and pickups, etc. It is so much fun just picking out the parts and when you are done you have a beautiful guitar exactly as how you wanted it.
Also, Warmoth makes the best parts in the world. Period. Their quality control is amazing.

I've built a couple of Strats. One was a standard 3-tone sunburst and the other was a pink swirled that I gave to my niece. The only part of each build that made me nervous was drilling into the body for the pick guard and trem cover screws but, it all went well. I went with pre-wired for convenience but, strats are pretty straight-forward anyway. I've built a bunch of Ibanez RG's and JEMs and wiring HSH Evolutions to a five-way switch, on the other hand, are quite the chore! Especially the RG's without the pick guard. Everything is inside that small, body cavity.
Any way, it would definitely be cool to see the entire build. I'm sure you have some good tips that we can learn from.

I just did a mim fender strat from standard single coil pickups to hsh, with a 3way toggle for each humbucker. I am just using the stock neck and hardware now, but I plan on buying a new neck just to get 22 frets. Great video my man.

Just modified a Jazzmaster with the switching options you are talking about in this video. The neck humbucker/bridge single coil setting is my favorite. Very nice mid-range tone, with a little bit of chime added back in.

The guitar parts all look Badass! I was completely amazed when you pulled out the pickups with complete mother of pearl covering the tops of the pickups. I was not aware that pickups can even be made that way!
Having said that, I personally would have done something bigger and bolder with regards to the mother of pearl inlays in the neck. Perhaps, fancier inlays on the neck. I think they would tie the two main pieces together better. But that is just my very humble opinion. Your way is very creative, as well.
Thank you for sharing. Can’t wait to see it finished.
I know you’re going to do this, but i will say it anyway.....Have fun putting it together😎👍
Peace and love be with you. ✌️

Just bought my first Warnoth neck , it far exceeded my expectations. Fit , finish and most importantly the fret work was as good as I've ever seen at any price. Almost done but the cold front showed up so Lacquer is on hold better very happy . Also neck pocket fit was perfect.

I would like to watch how you put it all together and hear your comment about the hardware or the installation process. And off course you must do the tone test. Really curious how that guitar sounds like.
About partcaster, I don't have enough passion to assembly a guitar. I know some people enjoy the process of doing it. I'd rather buy a good guitar, plug it, and play it.

    Hi Darrell
Nice choice on the new build... I have been watching Warmoth for some time now. I was going to write you about the Fender LSR roller nut... I was going to try it on my next build other then the Floyd Rose build I am doing now. What are your thoughts on the Floyd Rose setup?
I am impressed with the Darkmoon pickups and pick plate, although I am surprised you did not use the Obsidian Wire system. I am really impressed with it...
1.) Have you ever check out the McNelly pickups for Obsidian? I like the looks of the way they are constructed.
2.) There are so many different pickups out on the market -- how are you making a choice? Each time a watch a different pickup video I am learning of another brand or custom pickup builder...
As always my friend have fun with this build and keep up the good work, I have learn so many different great ideas from you views, likes/dislikes, and sound advice
    Dale
