I like that Vanitas chose to be darkness. Some villains CAN just consciously choose to be evil and reject a proper redemption, you know.
It's less that he's choosing darkness and more that he's legit actually darkness

@@TUCell-ps5mi but what is concerning... is that he had a form before. Because he has a bit of Ven's heart to give him form. And he was able to reconstruct himself from negative emotions in KH3. Which makes me wonder... can the other darknesses do something like that? Or is it just Vanitas because Ven gave him shape and part of his heart. And does that mean Vanitas can possibly return if reconstructed?
honestly, I'm more disappointed that Vanitas didn't have as many scenes like I'd hoped; I was *REALLY* looking forward to seeing characters other than Sora and Ven (e.g. Riku, Kairi, Donald & Goofy) react to his face.

I think that Vanitas accepted being darkness because he was the darkness inside of Ven. In a strange way, he cared about Ven and Sora as his brothers because as long as he is darkness and plays his roll, it saves Ven from having to have that darkness in his heart. He defined himself and became the necessary villain so that Ven would never have a possibility of becoming it. He never really tried to actually hurt any of them. And if you think about it. Even when he was about to strike down Aqua. He had to have known that Sora could unlock Ven's heart. And being one of the strongest warriors of darkness, he could have taken all 3 if them on because Aqua and Ven were already in a weakened state, meaning Sora would have been his only real challenge.
I really like Ven interrupting Sora in this. In BBS, Ven was always treated like a kid and sheltered away from the world because of Master Eraqus and Aqua stopping him. Instead, Ven made his own path, but still found his way back to the light. It shows Ven’s maturity and understanding: not everyone stays the same and sticks to the same path as everyone.

He originally had a personality similar to Ventus, but Xehanort twisted his mind to the point his mind was broken. Also I would like to add that sadness was his first emotions about him and Ventus, but that sadness turned to hatred and bitterness

Saying that Vanitas is evil is a gros an over simplification of what’s happening.
Vanitas isn't even evil. Doesn't the manga describe his birth with Master Xehanort as sad and depressing for him. He didn't even have a face until Ven's heart makes contact with Sora at the start of BBS.
Vanitas chose darkness because... he never had an actual choice. That's his tragedy. That's the point in the whole scene. And Ven understands that. I wonder where Kingdom Hearts will get opposing determinism and free will like this. I think this whole new arc will discuss those questions.
First we gotta find Sora, figure out who Subject X is (there are theories but nothing confirmed) and figure out who's still around from that time, including tracking down Lauriam and Elrena.

Logically, subject X is either Ava or Skuld. I personally think we are going to be surprised (characters can merge in this series, remember?)
Who's still around from that time depends on the new unknown time travel mechanics that go foward, the same used by Maleficent in Union Cross.

@Jeff Actually, it is Vanitas. The physical one we fight in kh3 is from the past like Ansem and Xemnas. When you beat someone from the past, you simply destroy their replica body and their being return to their timeline without any memories of the future. Present Vanitas is still lock inside Ventus's heart.

It has always felt weird that Sora and Ventus are actually together and actively interacting, they've always felt close but always apart, never truly interacting with one another. Now that they are interacting, it just feels a little odd that they are finally occupying the same space

It's so ironic that Sora was the one the most connected to Ven yet never held a face to face conversation or knew each other's names. Their hearts sought each other out in their desperate times of need yet never interacted. Ventus's heart was always inside Sora and influenced his life yet Sora never was aware of it. They influenced each others' lives so so much but they do it so unconsciously and it's so peculiar and strange.
Yeah, it does feel weird, but at least Aqua and Sora kept their 10-year-promise. :]

I do like that this plot point goes against the grain of most other fictional works that say you have to accept your other side and merge back into a whole. This one basically says the split happened, both darkness and light went on from that to become individual people with a right to exist.

The dialogue from 1:29 to 2:02 sums up their relationship, and why in the end, Vanitas took the path he did since Birth By Sleep. In the words of The Master of Masters:
"Darkness cannot be defeated when it's formless. However, when losing it's physical form, it also loses sight of it's _purpose._ In order to win, we need vessels with strong hearts."
Who would've guessed, that one of the thirteen darknesses the Master of Masters planned to eliminate, stuck with Ventus long enough to become Vanitas.

In kh ux there is an entity called darkness, and he was connected to ventus, master of master said that he had a plan to eliminate darkness definitely, a plan that would take multiple lifetimes. I can see vanitas being this darkness, he even said "I am darkness", this can be a hint of what is to come. and if I am not mistaking, darkness used maleficent to get out of the virtual projection world, so even if ventus defeated vanitas here, there may be another way to bring vanitas back, as a bigger threat
@@user-mf5iw9pl9j I like that idea that xeanhort extracted darkness from Ven knowing that he was a vessel for the original being known as darkness and manipulated terra to take his body to stand a better chance at defeating darkness once it refused with ven. With his new body, kingdom hearts, and the xblade he’d be a god capable eradicating darkness forever.

If I may throw my own hat in the ring concerning vanitas, spoilers for Union X, I don’t think he’s darkness with a capital D. It’s been stated repeatedly that he’s the other half of Ventus, one being light and the other darkness, and with the exception of Kairi and the princesses everyone in this universe us made up that way. Ven’s personality is that of a young boy that’s a little naive but hopeful. Vanitas embodies his darker emotions, which fits into what happened with Union X. Ventus, no doubt overwhelmed by all that was happening since the keyblade war, wanted power. One of the thirteen found him and gave him such power, tricking him into killing Marluxia’s sister. Ventus clearly was either reincarnated or hurled into the future, so, in my head, Vanitas represents the memories Roxas lost, complete with guilt, sorrow, and especially rage, particularly at himself.
It seems to me that both interpretations are equally accurate. As an entity, he is Darkness, as depicted in Union. An ancient shadow, cast from the sparks that flew from the first Keyblade war. But when that Darkness was given a host inside Ventus, it was forced to adapt to it; to gain sentience and form. It became a being that was everything that his host was not; a being of rage, hate, sorrow and envy. But the vessel also served to shape that Darkness in a much more literal sense, in that it became something more tangible, more real. It became something more (or perhaps less) than just an abstract shadow. It became a person in their own right. This emergent individual's form was derived from it's host, and thus was born Vanitas, as we know him from Birth By Sleep.
So, the answer to Vanitas's true nature depends on whether you define him by what he is now, or tack on his origins as something who's definition doesn't fully apply to him anymore, but once did.
This could explain why he does seem to hate and abuse Ven. Toughening him up to get stronger, but also actively getting on his nerves whenever he can. From this perspective it would make a lot of sense that him hating himself and Vanitas abusing Ven to the point of nearly going against Xehanort makes sense.

A few big ones being that they're so in tune with each other that they can finish each other's sentences(how romantic!), this closure scene was for Ventus, who was being opposed by him the entirely of BBS and he wanted every moment of it, and Sora talks too fuckin much.

Part of me thinks that the smile vanitas gives at the end is because he knows that his painful existence is finally ending and for once he doesn’t feel negative.

There's something just so sad hearing Vanitas come to those conclusions. He really thinks being the enemy is being "close" to them. And given the opportunity to change, he just questions why he even has to change if he's happy.

I’d often come back to this video to imagine Vanitas passing away differently. Instead of saying that he did choose who he is, he says he didn’t get to choose. That he can’t even choose what to feel or be, he is just full of hatred, sadness and despair, he just can’t be otherwise, it’s what he is. But there’s always a light at the end of the tunnel. Then he would state that the main reason behind helping Xehanort to forge the keyblade was to just disappear, to finally cease to exist and therefore putting a stop to all of those fledgling emotions he did not choose to have. Finally, thanking Ventus for allowing him to end this suffering, he would begin to fade away, as he sees how Sora and his friends did get to choose, as he sees how everyone else’s can feel at least one positive emotion, even if it’s for the dumbest reason.
“You’re all… lucky.”
There's just one problem with that!
Vanitas isn't dead! The Vanitas you fight in kh3 is from the past before you fight him in bbs. When you fight him, you simply destroy his replica leading to him to return to his timeline with no recolaction of the future. As seen in remind, present Vanitas is still inside Ven's heart.
Also, the manga isn't canon. Union x show us the true origine of Vanitas. He isn't Ven's half. He is a being of darkness that use Ven to become pure darkness leading to Ven's heart to become pure light. Ven lock him inside his heart.

I strongly belive we will have an other Ansem/Riku situation with Ven and Vanitas. That Ven will have to use the power of darkness to save the ones he love. Riku, who is a keyblade master, is the perfect one to teach him that. Once he does, Ven would have access to Vanitas's keyblade allowing him to dual-wield like Roxas and Sora.
It is also possible for Vanitas to communicate to Ventus in the realm of darkness like it was possible for Terra with Aqua. Remember, in the limit cut of remind, we saw the birth trio going there!
Also, with Vanitas appenrently being one of the primarial darknesses, maybe the other darknesses will try to free him from Ventus.
All I'm saying is we aren't done with Vanitas yet!
I think a very hatefull person would want to take everyone with him. Because a hatefull person wants to hurt what he hates. And if it is xehanort, or the world that is at fault of how hevus, he would want to destroy the world.

That explanation didn't make any damn sense
Yeeeeah, it's definitely vague. According to the wiki, the first time Ventus tried to make the x-blade 4 years prior to BbS, having Vanitas pulled from Ventus put him into a comatose state and Xehanort left him on Destiny Island thinking he would die, only for Ventus to somehow come in contact with a newborn Sora and allowing his heart to mend prior to the game's events. But that's -after- Vanitas was pulled out. Maybe what they're implying here is that Vanitas lacked a physical form beneath his armor until after Sora mended the part where the darkness extracted was with Ventus.
So I guess the implication is that because Sora was able to replace Vanitas with what was taken from Ventus, Vanitas' appearance was dictated by Ventus' perception of him. Or perhaps Vanitas was able to mimic Sora's appearance because he saw that Sora was able to help Ventus recover.
Bottom line is it's Nomura and nothing he writes is ever straight-forward or makes sense... = \

Ok so like essentially. Vanitas was half a person and lacked physical form until sora became a part of ventus, and by extention vanitas. It doesn't make sense but thats the logic. Sora completes both of them.
Vanitas had a physical form, after Ven came in contact with sora his look changed. (Also looks physically buff from the constant training from xehanort)
That only works if they were still connected after the seperation. Which is not indicated any where else.

Vanitas is also the Shadow Sora we've seen since Kingdom Hearts 1...

Having seen this after Union X or whatever it’s called makes this scene more crazy. Vanitas is literal darkness one of the 7 true darknesses. But because he was alone stuck into Ven for so long he gained sentience. Even in that sentience he still knew what he was pure darkness. If he ever came back he wouldn’t become a member of light. He’d probs try to do a suicide move to protect someone then sora would save him. BUT NO MORE HOW MUCH LIGHT YOU COUKD PUMP INTO HIM. He’d still be darkness. Crazy
This is a rough translation from the actual dialogue of the game. Sora and Ventus just defeated Vanitas, darkness is released, signifying the clash. And his mask begins to break.

Vanitas: I am the missing existence of Ventus. And you are the one who supplemented his heart. And so your image was imprinted onto me because of that. I am Ventus with the image of you, Sora. We are brothers, who together make a greater whole.

Translator:He actually says “You cooperate together.” But, I think he’s sassy Sora, so it makes sense if it’s worded like that 😂

I like to believe that Vanitas really cared about Sora and Ventus, despite being pure Darkness.
In the end, he was born from the stolen piece of one's heart and took on the other's appearance because his original self found refuge there.
Sora and Ven were *really* his brothers after all, and by vanishing forever and staying true to himself he showed them "affection", in his own twisted way.
He wasn't redeemed, but his arc ended in a satisfying way.
Actually, no he wasn't. He is one of the original thirteen darknesses that once never had physical form. They can only be defeated when they are. He possessed Ventus thousands of years before this and made him kill Strelitzia. Neither of them probably remember this; nor, maybe even how old they really are. But these kids are ancient.

There's something really funny about the cutscene showing the characters all being like: "You shouldn't choose darkness. Darkness is bad" then going back to the battle and seeing Anti-Sora being used
tbf Anti-Sora doesn't seem to be a danger to anyone else besides enemies and there's also Riku being in complete control over his Darkness (and if Dark Form is as canon as any other Formchange so could Sora lol)
Wasn’t it basically cause Soras newly born heart helped repair the missing part that was vanitas at the beginning of birth by sleep?
The only thing I remember is after their final fight, Ven's heart find a sanctuary inside Sora.

its crazy based on the fun fact from union cross that Vanitas is the literal 1/13 darkness that the MoM mentioned. And that Ventus was in union cross. Vanitas looks like sora because during the time Ventus and vanitas were 1 a symbiotic linked formed, then when xhenort seperated them and ventus search out sora to regain his shattered heart vanitas took the form of sora. As per Vanitas "I am you and Ventus' shadow, all 3 of us share a link thus making me what I am, Darkness".
Vanitas is a reflection of the one that took his place in Vens heart.

I kinda hope he returns in the future it feels like he should comes back even in a cameo boss fight to end Sora’s character arc in the final KH game it just feels like his character needs a proper conclusion since he’s so important to Sora as a character, plus it would be wicked to get him as the main villain of a game

They probably shouldn’t have shown Vanitas’ face until this; it’s way too confusing.
But from what we know after the events of Union X and Re:Mind, wouldn’t Vanitas technically be an ally. Life cannot exist without light or darkness. Too much of either is bad. Eraquas was willing to harm Ventus because of his darkness, and didn’t hesitate to fight Terra. With the MoM, a being of pure light supposedly, wants Kingdom Hearts for his own motives, just like Xehanort planned to take over the course of a decade. Yeah sure, the darkness is evil, but if everything was light, anyone like Riku or Terra would’ve been killed. It’s in the hero’s main interest to have help from the dark in order to fight the Masters. Unless Vanitas is one of many Darknesses, then that’s another plot line that needs to be covered lmao.
Well there is a strong connection to the idea that vanitas is a darkness from union cross as he hides within ventus and attacks strelitzia (not sure on the spelling) and doesn't have a physical form of his own until he was forced out in birth by sleep and mixed with the negative emotions of ventus and I think it hints to soras as well but more loosely like he feeds on it rather fusing with it and thats why when ven heals vanitas takes on soras face

This is still confusing, so that would mean that if Vanitas died in KH3, he’d go back to his original time in BBS, even though he’s from UX?
@@danieloftamriel from what I understand just basic logic no since he has no real body of his own he should go back to ventus and slumber as stated in union x what they refer to as darkness cant be killed unless it has a body and further hinted that those beings of light are supposed to in a way chain that darkness to their own body thus sealing both fates when killed like sacrificial lambs.
