- It would seem that there are no end to variations on tomato sandwiches. For example, today’s sandwich, the Tomato Sandwich from “Festive Foods” by the Milwaukee Gas Light Company in 1959 has us flavoring the mayonnaise. Which I do not hate at all. Just not something I’ve seen in the myriad of other tomato sandwich recipes.

There is something so pleasing about the bread matching the size/shape of the tomato slice 😍
You took the words right out of my mouth! 👍😊
When you mentioned the classic tomato sandwich with mayo from the South (I'm in Bama), it reminded me of my Mother. When I was a kid she died from breast cancer, and when she was in the hospital on chemo, one of the few things that she could think of that she could eat (or wanted to) would be a tomato sandwich. She would bring tomatoes to the hospital, chill them on the AC unit and slice up her own and make sandwiches in the hospital bed.😂 She loved those! Me...not so much.
I'm glad she was able to find something to eat that gave her comfort
They have wonderful egg salad in the cafe at our cancer center. My wife asked me to buy some today before my treatment so I wouldn't have to cook this evening. I made a half sandwich for each of us before giving in to nap time and put sliced cucumbers and half a dozen sliced cherry tomatoes on mine. I just woke up and saw this tomato sandwich video and got a laugh out of it.
I'm glad she enjoyed herself even in the hospital!
00:26 Reminds of when Adrienne Monk was given square tomatos by a scientist. The slices were perfect for sandwiches. "There's no overhang!"
And then Monk told him “You’re doing the work of the Lord “. What a line.
@@gr8buy It's a gift, and a .......?
Thank you for the recipe✨
Tomato sandwiches are one of my favorites!
🍅
Sprinkling some smoked paprika adds some depth to the flavors as well.
I’m going to check out the other tomato sandwich recipes you’ve posted~
🍅 🥪
Be well, stay kind and blessings to all~
When our heirloom tomatoes are ready at the end of the summer, I have tomato sandwiches almost every morning. We have Beefmaster this year, can't wait!
I’m a French baker (in Tennessee) and one the bakers that works with me brought me a ton of tomatoes from her garden, so I brought home a baguette I made today. About to go make one now.
hard to beat the combo of mayo and a really good tomato
@@suppersready and a wee little bit of yellow mustard! 😊
The building of the Milwaukee Gas Light Company is still downtown. It has a light at the top that looks like a blue flame. I think it's a museum now {I'll have to investigate}. Their Christmas cookie book was very popular I hear.
Finally, a good dose of black pepper.
Headed to the Farmer's Market this weekend. This will be on the menu now. Grated onion, hmmm.
grated onion also yields onion juice so you get another ingredient making this sandwich 😎
Purple Cherokee tomato instead of what you get from local Grocery. The black pepper is a key to the wonderfulness of the sammich. Still like Roman Meal bread over your whitebread. The taste of the Cherokee Purple, or it's variants, will make a HUGE difference in the sammich.Fresh thyme is always better than dried, but you use what's ya gots.
Seconding Cherokee tomatoes. Those things are heavenly.
I grew up eating tomato sandwiches and still do. That’s a very basic version. To plus up you can use Ranch dressing instead of mayo and add any or all of the following: thin slices of cucumbers, bell pepper and/or onion with black pepper, maybe garlic powder and a touch of mustard.
Your merchy merch is uber cool and very reasonably priced. I just ordered two T-shirts. Plus up: I’ve never done business with a cartel before. Very exciting.
That looks delicious! Without any plus ups!
I love these simple videos and your thoughts on sandwiches. Cheers mate
Cutting the bread round seems like such a British tea sandwich thing to do😂
I wonder what celery salt would've been like
Cutting bread rounds is a great idea! I’ve been cutting the tomatoes to fit the bread all these years 🙄
That absolutely could be lunch, plussed up with a slice of cheddar. Of course you’d need two or three of them. The black pepper + thyme is perfect with tomato.
From the south here... Pretty much any way you put tomato, mayo, onion, and black pepper together it's GONNA be good.
I would have added a burger patty, cheese, mustard, pickles and lettuce.
This is literally the tomato sandwhich ive been making for years, everything except the ahapped bread and and thyme
"Some black pepper"= ALL THE BLACK PEPPER!
My favorite summer sandwich is a thick slice of summer tomato that I put salt, pepper, sugar and cream of tarter on. Put it between two slices of bread spread lightly with Duke's mayo, and you're in heaven.
sometimes simple is all you need for a sandwich.
It's almost like this guy eats one sandwich everyday
Grillos now has a cookbook. Just so you know.
Another great plus up would be thin slices of red onion!
You should have play lists by main ingredient (tomato, anchovy, etc)
i'm starting to be convinced that the gaslight company has been purposely confusing me with their sandwich recipes....
Have you ever done a cucumber sandwich?
yep!
Hard to improve upon a Tomato Sandwich - perhaps Japanese Milk Bread and Kewpie Mayo (the one WITH MSG) - honorary mention for Dukes.
I expected fresh basil instead of thyme :O
Oh yeah, it's finally that time of year when Barry makes all the sandwiches with tomato on them.
My first thought was to add dill and garlic. I approve of the thyme and pepper though.
This is similar to am Italian tomato sandwich with the thyme swapped for fresh basil and celery salt.
I've not tried celery salt on tomatoes 🤔
@@DeborahMaufer It has very unique taste on hot dogs, but mixed with tomato, mayo and basil it has a very herby umami flavor. Also Rye bread is ideal for this sandwich.
Have you tried the Dale Earnhardt Jr banana and mayo? It’s pretty good, just a thin layer of may with banana sliced into rounds.
Some tomato with your black pepper sandwich? 😊
there is always thyme for plus-ups
😊
Oh yeah. Yummy.
I would probably make it a proper lunch sandwich by adding sliced ham and round provolone or Swiss cheese.
Id probably add a slice of cheese, but that sounds amazing. or a runny egg.
Chunky blue cheese dressing instead of mayo.
It looked like basil to me. Maybe that would work too.
I think Milwaukee is trying to gas light me. Pepper always, pepper often. Fresh tomato in the summer is a pleasure, at least the ones that grow in Maryland, salt, pepper, mayo, hold the onions and leave that bread alone.
Dainty as well as tasty.
"Some" black pepper
love me a tomato sammy
Looks Tasty
➕⬆ Garlic powder!
Talk about a tomato sandwich!
Sandwichs for tea service
Needs a tin of soup pouring over it 😂
😂
Just a pinch more salt please 😊
Found you because of my local news show.
Isn't really the only difference between this tomato sandwich and others is just the circular cut of the bread? Break it down it's still basically mayo, salt and pepper. We've seen that before right? Does the added shredded onion make that much difference?
It does if you don't like raw onion! 😉
@@DeborahMaufer I find a lot of times, and my parents did this to me when I was a kid, if there were foods I didn't, different vegetables, they would hide it in different meals to see if I noticed. I rarely did, lol. Guess my tongue isn't very refined
Really not all that different than Southern/Appalachian tomato sandwich... grated onion is the outlier. Definitely needs black pepper! Thanks Barry!
Barry do you think the Milwaukee Gas Light Company and the Vancouver Gas Company were at war with each other trying to make the best cookbook?
I grew up in actual poverty in the 1960s and a tomato sandwich was an easy and cheap stomach filler for us kids. None of this wasteful cutting the bread to be the same shape as the tomato, sliced tomatos in bread and butter. We also had banana sandwiches and pickled beetroot sandwiches, also flipping delicious and I still eat them now.
Tea sandwich?
Based on their name, is the cookbook publisher gaslighting us?
Is there a wrong tomato sandwich?
Good thing you didn't use a cherry tomato.
That would be the teddy bear's picnic version!
Like if you just made a similar sandwich using the first maters from your garden. That's the only way this sandwich actually works.
too mar toe.. get it right
What's festive about it?
There's no Milwaukee Gaslight company, you're making it up for attention.
Tomatoes are nothing more than sauce that isn't done yet.
Nice sauce that isn't done yet sandwich.
Alternatively, tomato sauce is an over- processed tomato 🍅
