In Buddhism, it is recommended that a person does not engage in any job where you are paid to reward addiction (so, you wouldn't work in industries like alcohol, gambling, recreational drugs, sex work, or unhealthy food). I find it quite sad that a lot of our world is focused around these 'guilty pleasures' - they feel like a sticky web that it can be very hard to escape from. Please know, I'm not judging people who work in these industries - shaming people is pointless and only furthers the cycle of addiction.

This film really touched me, bc of my personal experience with my own father. He died right after my 14 birthday, due to being morbidly obese, the last time I saw him is when I was leaving to go back to my mom's house, my dad was laying in his bed, skin pale as snow, purple eye bags, screaming in pain everytime he had too move anywhere. He was such a kind and generous man, and I miss him more than anyone could ever imagine. Nobody ever realizes how much pain people with morbid obesity go through.

Me too, I kept crying throughout the entirety of the movie. My dad doesn't have binge eating disorder but he has a chronic illness that has made him obese. He's been sick my entire 20 years of life. We're blessed he's still alive and kicking at 55 but we're anxiety ridden because he's a ticking time bomb. It really hit home for me. It beautifully captures the pain and hopelessness that I have seen in my dad. I can really see him in Brendan's role because he's always trying to be positive and is always seeing the best of us despite what we've done. He also desperately wants to connect with me and my siblings. Sadie Sink's role reflects my older sister and brother and somewhat me. So this has shaken me up in a good way to be kinder to my dad.

What I find so poetic and yet tragic is that Charlie even though he was dying he saw the good in others and gave them a chance. Except for himself, Charlie didn't gave himself the chance to get better to be better for his Alan and most of all for his daughter.
One of the things that came into my mind was the quote that Kratos told Atraeus and vice versa: "Do not be sorry be better." To that I see that trying to improve yourself is not just a way to show that you are sorry but you are there to improve for the well being of yourself and others.

I agree, the bits where instead of meeting his daughter's rage with any of his own, he loved her, he gave her the benefit of the doubt. I think that if I treated my parents like that I would feel extremely awful, and seeing how he was okay with it because she was at least there for him broke my heart. He really wanted the best for her because he believed in her even after all she said and did to him.

One of my favorite things about the end of this movie is how open to interpretation it is. It invokes conversation and thinking rather than just giving us all the answers. It gives us what is important without spoon-feeding what is obvious.
Did Charlie actually get up off the couch? Did he die when Ellie opened the door? Is the whole scene just symbolism? Is it meant to be positive? Is it a religious nod? I absolutely loved it. Like you said, it's depressing, but in a way that is intriguing, and thought provoking. Such an excellent movie.

ellie never read the essay, and instead, left him to die. the scene of him walking was a vision he wanted to have. to be able to stand face to face with his daughter, going back to the moments where he could feel his feet against the ocean. ellie never saw him as a good father, not even after he was gone. that was the last he saw of ellie, and he ended up dying on that couch alone.

As someone dealing with bulimia and binge eating since I was fourteen the addiction towards food was so well portrayed in this film, almost better than any other portrayal of an eating disorder I’ve seen on screen.
The sheer loss of control and anxiety you feel while stuffing your mouth with food until you feel numb and literally sick is something I’ve dealt with more times than i’d like to admit but I never thought that a piece of media could do such a perfect job at portraying just what it feels like to deal with a food addiction
That’s why I genuinely find it so revolting that some people have been saying this movie is fatphobic. i’m an eighteen year old female still in high school at a completely normal weight yet it’s astounding how much of myself I see in Charlie it may sound kind of weird I know but that just goes to show how much of a /person/ his character is rather than just a dehumanized caricature of a fat person
Also I don’t cry with movies

I believe he killed himself bc he felt couldn’t do it anymore.. and charlie telling him that he didn’t need god didn’t help at all..

Watching this film was so real. It made me ugly cry at the end because it felt too personal to me. The real pain of watching someone you love slowly die, is so gut wrenching. I have a family member who is currently around 500 pounds. I’m his closest family member, as no one else will really talk to him, as the pain of seeing him do this to himself is too much. He’s always been larger since I was a kid, but he’s currently at his absolute heaviest and in poor health. We’ve tried absolutely everything and begged him to get help and help him lose the weight. But he’s okay with just “letting it happen now.” He’s constantly asking me to buy him fast food or get him sweets, since he is now too big to fit in his car and it breaks me. I have to tell him no. And I know I shouldn’t feel bad about it, yet I do. Because I love him. But I can’t bring myself to contribute to this. Watching this movie was so hard for me because it felt like I was watching him. It felt so surreal and painful. The ending cut so deep because I think about that possibility almost nightly, that he could go at any time. As hard as it was, I appreciate the beauty of how raw this movie is. It’s one of the few movies that has deeply affected me.

It's so heartbreaking and infuriating that there are people who think of him as disgusting like his own daughter, and don't understand him/try to change him like Thomas.
I mean hell, even after Thomas finally admits he thinks he is disgusting for being obese and gay, he still wishes Thomas to have a happy life and go back to his family. Even after his daughter telling him she doesn't care if she dies NOW, he still loves her, so, so much. And yet despite all that he thinks he deserves to be punched down on because he made mistakes in the past.

I had a friend who sadly ended up succumbing to his addictions (cancer induced by alcohol abuse). I had begged him to stop, I tried everything I could; "Just one meal without a drink?" (got the silent treatment for that one, from him and his enabler).
"Why do you do this?" He said: "I know the consequences. I don't want to live my life in a cage of rules about what makes me good or bad." When he received his terminal diagnosis, he was stone cold sober for his last 3 weeks on this earth (he didn't last long; his chemo papers came through the day he died). He wrote his own eulogy and spent a lot of time staring at the wall...it was hard to watch and be with him in his pain. I loved him a lot and I miss him every day. I wish he was still here, but maybe that's selfish of me. Maybe I only loved him because I needed him somehow...this film made me think about this a lot. I hope I wasn't selfish in wanting him to stay. I can't really think of the right response to the "don't put me in a cage" argument. I wasn't trying to force him to stop, but I didn't want him to die young...He was a brilliant guy. It was like watching an ever encroaching, slow, painful suicide. I don't think that pain will ever go away until I can solve that argument in my head.

    • @batjackattack5556
      @batjackattack5556 Год назад +2

nah it’s totally not selfish at all to miss someone. i’ve heard that you don’t ever rlly get over the death of someone, you just learn to live with it, just like any trauma. i don’t think that there rlly is an answer for the cage thing, it’s just something unfortunate for everyone. it not your fault either, because you literally can’t do anything to help if the person doesn’t want help. and you probably feel guilty bc you couldn’t do anything abt it too. but what you are feeling is very much normal and expected, but i am sorry that you have to feel it anyway. i haven’t lost someone before, all i know is that it isn’t easy. i would recommend looking into a therapist if you can afford it. if not, there are many online free resources that can help educate and give advice on how to handle it. i personally recommend journaling to everyone too, as there are just too many benefits to count. i hope you can work through this.

I had a bunch of emotions built up from last year that the movie got out of me, it's honestly one of the best cries of my life. And it's because of how personal it is to me.
I was raised by my grandparents, both of whom have been obese my entire life and are somehow over 75 now. My grandmother spent half of last year relearning how to walk after a bone infection and there were several times where things got worse and I thought she was going. I was literally spoon feeding her at one point because she didn't have an appetite and she was wasting away.
She's okay now, less mobile and her memory is less there after all that stress (physical and mental) but alright enough to handle herself (my brother and I check in often, of course). I know I can't have her forever but I am not ready to lose her. I know we never are but I really don't know how I'd get through it.
tldr; when you're ready to get that cry out, it's so worth it. take care of yourself 💕

I went in simply because I had been a fan of Darren Aronofsky’s past films and because I knew this was Brendan Fraser’s big comeback. I went in simply expecting to either like it or hate it but I really loved it. Sitting back to reflect on it I see more and more how realistic this actually is which is why it’s so depressing that at times you want to laugh. Not because it’s funny but because there are moments when you’re suffering and you do something “cringey” to express that pain. It’s a surreal moment where you realize how bad it’s gotten that you sometimes just laugh at yourself. I probably didn’t explain it too well but I saw those moments on screen and my god I’m glad Aronofksy didn’t hold back. Truly a gem of a film

The main story is about his relationships. The message: 1. We are the ones who love us, 2. Life is fleeting. 3 Truth and honesty matter. 4. Our children are our future, our immortality. 5. People are incapable of not caring (though some try really hard). 6. We are all going where Charlie goes. The last words in the essay don't need to be said, she looks at her dad, and she smiles.

Just got done watching this movie last night this was the most depressing and frustrating and yet beautiful movie I’ve seen in awhile. darren aronofsky really put his stamp on this film and showed you why he’s a great director from the score and acting in this film is just amazing. and Brandon Fraser puts on a performance of a life time this movie deserves the hype and even more.
