I feel so sorry for Carlton. It really pulls at your emotions and was a great way, at the time, to show racism.
I related so much to the confusion of Carlton when it came to my teachers and how they mistreated me
As a fan of the show I think it made him a stronger character. Later when he isnt accepted into a frat for being "not black enough" he immediately stands up for himself instead of assuming it was something he did. I know its a different situation but It seems it shows Carltons growing strength

Yup, its very dehumanizing to a lot of black guys that just so happen to be nerdy or intellectual and have entirely different hobbies, interest from the stereotypes, they are punished by both black & white people
That's just how Arthur handles all celebrity cameos. They make them look as realistic as possible for the art style. They usually look out of place.
The anti-racism PSA featuring Garnet is the one people bring up most often but I really love the two shorts you didn’t mention that feature Pearl and Amethyst.
In Pearl’s short, she argues that we should do a lot more to represent black people in history than just giving facts that they exist.
In Amethyst’s short, she and the kids agree that just because people of different races should be treated equally doesn’t mean they are all the same since they have a wide variety of cultures and face many different kinds of racism.
I’m really impressed with how these shorts handled this topic.
I’m personally not impressed at all over the fact that they decided to handle these topics in this manner… at all! Why the hell should kids be conditioned to care about what the races of each of their friends are when they are just kids? If you tell a black kid that people of his color has constantly been discriminated and enslaved in this country, but NOT about the extremes that this country went to abolish all of that, you better hope that you haven’t influenced something truly miserable that will affect his lifelong dedication and citizenship to his country.
@@Kirs.. but yet at the same time I feel as if younger audiences ( 7 or lower ) shouldn’t have to really learn about this type of stuff at such a young age since they are still children. but it’s important to teach children about these types of topics too.

While teaching kids about the history of racism abolition, I think the point of the PSAs are to remind people of ways to be anti-racist, because even though we've done a ton of work to stop racism, it's still very common in today's society and it's ok to remind people of what they can do now and not just what has been done.

but what I’m arguing is that we shouldn’t teach kids about this stuff without teaching about the whole story of how it came to be, all the way up to how America eventually came to the point of its complete abolishing.
Also be careful when you talk about social equality because there is two different types: Equality of opportunity, and equality of outcome.
fresh prince is honestly the best one. not only does it reflect on the racism that the victims sometimes face just because they a "minority", but how they FEEL. it must be hard that no matter what personality you have or if you're a criminal or not , people are going to take one look at your skin colour/race and think "this man/woman does not deserve to enjoy a happy life like me."

I don't think it's a bad episode but I respectfully disagree. The parts I personally have a problem with is the episode saying that all cops are racist which isn't true some are and others aren't and part where will says all black people have harder lives than white people which also isn't entirely true some black people do and others don't.
I don't think it's good to assume someone has a hard or easy life solely based on their skin color it would drive me crazy if people assumed I had a hard life full of struggle just because I'm black life is definitely not so black & white.

One of my favourite racism episodes in cartoons is in Teen Titans, because it felt more like a realistic approach to portraying racist individuals. Racism is just ingrained into some people and they'll sometimes never change even if their lives are saved by the "inferior" race. It goes on to highlight how powerful and deeprooted the issues can be.

Static shock impressed me so much with that episode. One of the greatest episodes of my childhood
I watched a few episodes growing up but don't really remember them to heart, but this is a strong message, it had progression to it, it just wasn't "this is a racist message", they really fleshed out a whole issue with the friend being insecure about his father's racism clearly while asking to go to his house, he was concerned when has dad arrived home early, and he bluntly called out the message it was trying to send, racism hurts everyone.
I also like how in the end, Static's Dad also seems far more professional and fatherly than racist dad, and called out the problems. Telling him how much it damages his relationships with his family, and creates a barrier for socializing, etc.
The static shock portion of the video legit kind of caught me off guard, 4:24, real sh*t, no holding back, no crap, just lays it right out.
EDIT: It also points out that a son is calling his father "stupid" due to his racism, it conveys the stupidity of racism to children.

@@viderevero1338 yeah unlike modern shows it teaches these topics in a way that doesn't belittle other races and paints them as pure scumbags who don't change that kinda characterization is equally racist in my opinion but Static handled it in a way that didn't insult it's white audience for being white because one person in the crowd is racist unlike Velma would man that show sucks.
Shows like Sesame Street and Bluey are why I can like children's programming. Both touch on real life issues and teach kids healthy ways to deal with said topic.
Those show are more for toddlers tho but they do a decent job that makes babies understand

I still don’t support Sesame Street condoning the whole BLM thing. It was only riots, no protests. George Floyd was an excuse for destruction, for he wasn’t killed by just a white man, but also a black man and a hispanic. And, may God have mercy on his soul. But no protest needs molotov cocktails, that’s terrorism.
Aside from the the "rocko" storyline. The adults do nothing to stop Zoey from using rocko to do whatever the hell she wants and they just tell elmo to deal. Like. Nah. Man.

I'm pretty sure It's more to the fact that newer shows either dumb it down to the point of impracticability or just suck at writing it.
No one gets passed off about Teen Titans, Static Shock and other shows from that generation. They discussed the issues in a mature way that doesn't come of as preachy or stupid.
@@jasonfurumetarualkemisto5917 I feel like for every Static Shock, there was forced messaging like Captain Planet, or the Tiny Toons "drinking is bad" PSA episodes that didn't handle topics with nuance. And on the flip side, for every Louder and Prouder, something like Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur handles themes of stereotypes well.

That's fair.
I think the remedy to this sort of stuff is taking out the "activists" and "Souless execs looking to check a box" from these things. Any shows that touch on these topics should be done by people that fundamentally care about the franchise in question, people who have a nuanced view and understanding of the social issues they need to talk about, and people who seek a discussion and not a soapbox..... and finally people that actually know how to write a show.

Basically people that authentically care. People want to see more Static, Teen Titans and old PPG... and less Captain Planet, Louder and Prouder, Stephen Universe PSA's (only the PSAs though, most of the show is pretty great, it's like an anomaly) and High Guardian Spice.

I like how some cartoons aren’t afraid to tackle real life issues and teach children why these issues are bad in the first place. That way the kids become more aware of what is actually going on in today’s world.

Static Shock was such a good show. As a white kid growing up in a predominantly white area (by design I found out.) My dad was racist and used to make racist comments, even telling me to “stop watching that black show.” Needless to say, this episode spoke volumes to me. It was important to me to see black superheroes and to see white kids hanging out with black kids, cuz it wasn’t always my reality. Now I fortunately have black friends, and a lot of black people I love and respect in my life. And you know I kept watching Static Shock as much as possible behind my dads back.
Edit: I know I’m not special. Not looking for respect, just happy there were positive role models to look up to unlike my dad.

Honestly it seems like a lot of "older" cartoons and series tackle the issue of diversity and racism better than most modern shows. Static shock handled it a mature way for older kids, and Sesame Street handled it in a simple way for toddlers, teaching kids that they can be friends with others no matter what they look like. Obviously there are some more recent series that tackle this issues in a more nuanced way, and diversity in childrens media has become more wide spread, which is good, but there are definitely some HUGE misses in terms of tackling theses issues.
Stuff now is just WOKE bs that doesn’t portray actual issues but rather push an agenda of their political beliefs
That's because they think that advocating for a better future and wokeism are the same thing. They're not.

Static and Raven talked about and brought these issues up in a respectful manner instead of how let's say the modern Proud Family beats you over the head with it. Kids and Adults don't like being talked down to and that is how every one of the modern cartoons have handled these situations. They throw it in your face and just want you to soak it all in instead of understanding the nuance and learning from the experiences.

I remember one educational show I think from Europe was pushing this whole “racism can only happen to black people, no one else” which is a horrible way to tackle it, racism is discrimination of a person/group of people based on their heritage, regardless of race.
When I was in 7th grade, we read a book called The Skin I'm In. It's about a middle schooler who gets bullied because of her skin color and doesn't think she's beautiful because of her differences. It's a great book that talks about the everyday struggles of a person of color!

The Static Shock episode was very well written, Virgil never assumes that Richie's dad is a racist at first, he takes alot of his sour attitude as just that, he explains that his dad doesnt like that music either and doesnt just assume the worst from Richie's father until he hears him explicitly say what he says, seemed like a small thing but i think the message was "dont just assume someone is racist just because they dont like what you like" it draws a real line between people just not connecting and real problem behavior. This contrast with Virgil's father who has every reason to be upset with Richie's dad but still puts that aside because he genuinely cares for Richie and doesnt hold anything against him showing his strong moral character.

Honestly, I like how shows can talk about very serious topics in a mature manner. Plus, I'd listen and watch an entire cartoon pointing out racism with a straight on plot. It's honestly important to learn about what racism is and how it can affect people in a very strong way
Teen Titans also had an episode on racism back in the day, titled "Troq". Basically a big name space hero, Valior, comes Earth, following some hostile aliens which he ends up taking out in front of the Titans. Then the rest of the episode is the Titans going with him for hero work and the whole time, everyone gets along with him and him with everyone but Starfire, who he refers to as "Troq" while just being a general dickhead to her. Cyborg, being a concerned friend picks up that it bothers her and asks what it means, to which Starfire replies "It means nothing." As in "It means he's saying I'm worthless and nothing." but it's taken as "It doesn't mean anything" and is later used by Cyborg as a nickname for her. Predictably, this pisses her off and Cy kinda just gets confused and says "I thought you said it didn't mean anything?" which is when it's clarified that it means that she's nothing and it's a racist term for Tamaranians. And god... Cyborg's response here is great as an adult he basically says he's faced discrimination too because he's... a robot. But there's the slightest hesitation in his words and as an adult you can pick up that he really means "Because I'm black" but he doesn't want to ruin Starfire's view of humans. The episode ends on Starfire saving Valior's ass from dying despite the fact that she could have left him to die. Then he says the typical "I guess not all Tamaranians (blacks) are bad. You're one of the good ones." to sorta just signify that like... yeah, this guy's still an asshole and changing a racist's views is incredibly difficult. Go watch it if you can.
can i just say that "troq's" definition hits HARD as a racist term? like,most of the time racist words are kind of cut and dry without any deeper meaning: you're this and that's a bad thing. but "troq" actually is a word that translates to "nothing" and to call someone one is to basically tell them that they they simply don't matter to anyone because they are nothing.
NOW,i'm not saying that it's worse than non-alien based racist terms or am trying to downplay those words by any means: i'm just saying that,as a word it hits hard based purely on the fact that it's definition could technically be used for anyone and still hurt.

You missed out on some solid examples that show the complexity of racial issues. In a later Fresh Prince season, we also get a perfect example of how racism affects the culture of the targeted group. They're attempting to join a black fraternity and immediately push Carlton out because he's "too white" therefore doesn't understand their experience. That's something not enough people talk about, that's something I've experienced firsthand, the racism that can occur within groups of.
Yeah black fraternities/sororities were quite colorist and it went both ways back then. Some sororities didn't let you in if you couldn't pass the paper bag test or the small tooth comb test. If your skin was darker than a paper bag or if your hair was super coiled (most type 4 textures) they wouldn't let you in, or in some cases if you were too light they also wouldn't take you (this one is rare though). It wasn't if you were black, it was based on shade of skin and hair type. Colorism was introduced during slavery to keep slaves controlled since they couldn't band together if they were turning against each other. Light skinned slaves got to work in the house and were seen as better than the others, who worked the fields, even though they were subjected to s3xual abuse frequently. Colorism sadly is still harming our community today. Through European colonization of India and South America, colorism was also introduced, so the black community isn't the only one struggling with colorism. Racism discriminates purely by the race of the person no matter their shade, whereas colorism is more complex since it deals more with how those of the same race treat each other based on the shade of their skin.
Dang that's tough, I couldn't imagine what it's like to be a Black person and being told that you aren't Black enough. Big strength to you my friend

I put the Static Shock episode the same level as one of the best ways to show social problems. Another example is one of the episodes of Powerpuff Girls called Equal Fights that tackles gender equality in a good way and not really shoving it down our throats like some movies and shows nowadays...
fresh prince is no joke probably one of the best sitcoms that came from that time. absolutely hilarious, but they werent afraid to tackle some bigger issues too. infact, i think they tackled a lot of different issues throughout their run.

Statik Shock was one of my favorite cartoons as a kid, it was amazing & all the messages were so well done but also in a way that its acceptable to show to young kids, make them think... nowadays the cartoons just seem like mindless content without the heart & soul, only mass produced for profit.
that's so raven has so many episodes on real world problems and it was definitely an amazing show. it was my favorite show growing up and its still really good today. Episodes ranging from stealing to smoking. definitely worth watching

Yeah I think the first Stephen Universe PSA did anti-racism a disservice by combining two big issues into one. Even with LGBT out of the equation, racism can be encountered in many ways beyond just romantic relationships.
Kinda surprised you didn’t mention the Proud Family episode that featured a scene about racism toward Muslims. We even learn about aspects of Muslim culture, like fasting and the hijab.
It’s the few times a cartoon covers racism towards a minority group that isn’t black (I know it’s religious, but in the US, it’s heavily associated with Middle Easterners).
I know African-Americans are the largest minority group in the US, but we’re definitely not the only minorities who experience racism. Hopefully, more people of color also get representation in cartoons.

@AyePaidboy I agree! I feel bad for feeling this way, but I truly just want some middle Eastern rep that isn't just Muslim or Arab stereotypes. Me and my other middle Eastern friends were talking and they mentioned the fact that there's barely any characters that are middle Eastern. There's some Indian characters, but the rest is just ignored. A lot of them are also very oddly fetishised by Western culture?? The fact that they can't even get proper hijab right sometimes is just ignorance. Of course its different for everyone, but a little research into the culture would be nice. We barely get any coverage as it is, to the point where when I saw people actually recognising my country I was so happy and surprised

I don’t think proud family is the right show though. They may have included discrimination towards Muslims which resonates with me because half my country is Muslim (other half is Christian, but no religious clashes!) but it grossly displays colourist stereotypes and excuses it as a ‘joke’. Like for example all the light skins are either smart or beautiful (penny, her mom) and most the darker skinned characters are portrayed as ghetto, ugly, dumb (penny’s dad, dijonay) especially Dijonay, purposely making her the loudest character, giving her a bunch of siblings and making her obsessed with a guy who doesn’t like her back. And the writers being asked on Twitter to improve this aspect in the reboot and them blatantly saying no. My point is all the shows shown in this video don’t perpetuate stereotypes on children watching this shows.
As a non-black kid, who lived in a mostly white area but did have black family. That Fresh Prince episode really hit me hard watching it as a kid!

I grew up with the Fresh Prince. It was one of my favorite shows aired in the Netherlands and I watched it with my family. There were a lot of situations my parents took the opportunity to explain and educate me on racism, and specifically racism in America - obviously they have their own history as well. I loved how they explored the personalities as well, how anyone can be funny, sexy, professional, an authority figure, smart, dumb, etc. The show undoubtly influenced me since I was young and I am grateful about it. All I wish for now is an expanded exploration of those families and I hope we get to see more.

There’s another episode of Thats So Raven that really touched my heart, Eddie has a monologue where he explains that his best friend as a child was white but one day his father tore them apart because he didn’t want his child to have a black friend 😭 That’s So Raven has many good messages from positive body image to being anti racist, im grateful I grew up watching it

What episode was that?
In the 2000s, these topics were usually handled very well, with the lesson usually being we should all treat each other with respect no matter the color we are all human. Kids are manipulated by the parents to somewhat hate or distrust those who don't look like us. This unfortunately still happens in society of all ethnicities, especially those who seem to only see color. Static shock was an amazing piece of media that I enjoyed as a kid, even though I didn't fully understand most of the topics at the time.
I do wish shows would also show that a lot of people who are racist don't acknowledge that they're racist. I've known people that would openly say racist things (even the N word), and insist that they're not racist even when called out. I thought Teen Titans did it best with the character never acknowledging his own racism even at the end of the series.

I’ve always been worried about racism because of how my dad was treated. He was adopted from South Korea and has told me stories of getting bullied for looking different, and I always have it in the back of my mind. But luckily in the age I’ve grown up in (he was born in the late 70s and I was born in 2010) I haven’t had to deal with racism, for what I can remember at least. Everyone born in the late 2000s early 2010s is so lucky that we didn’t have to deal with racism (too much at least), and I’m glad that people like MLK Jr. helped people realize that racism is and always will be a problem in our world.

The Fresh Prince episode about Carltons blackness is a really great one as well. He isnt accepted into a fraternity because he is deemed not black enough by another members. Carlton eventually stands up for himself at a party and the rest of the fraternity sees.
Steven universe, Regular Show, and Adventure Time hit mad different when I was a kid and to this day I'm 16 and still watching all them
I’m surprised how civil and respectful most of the discussions in the comments are, wish discussions on these topics were usually this civil
I’m one of the die hard fans of Steven Universe, and I find their SU racism PSAs very shallow.
The delivery of the messages is so painfully fake, it almost seems like they were made just for brownie points, and they ONLY discuss “Black VS white” as if other racist dynamics don’t even exist; one even spreads the claim that Lewis Latimer is the true inventor of the light bulb, which is simply... not true, so misinformation on top of that.
It’s so weird and sad to see, because the main show is so good at delivering heartfelt messages and discuss real issues.
I hate the show but I’m glad a die hard fan can criticize this problem to a show you love

I agree with your criticisms. One thing I want to point out however is that literally every example in this video of racism episodes in television has the same dynamic of a white person being racist to a black person it's pretty much the default so why only critisize Steven Universe for it?
I'm not saying people shouldn't talk about how some white people can be racist but it would be nice if television could also acknowledge that other races are also capable of being racist.
You make a very good point of these PSAs only addressing white and black people but I think that the PSAs that the gems were working in were meant to be poorly written, and Pearl and Amethyst acknowledged that they were.
I always questioned if Rebecca Sugar or any of the original team for Steven Universe actually worked on those little PSAs. They, all of them, just felt so basic compared to and disconnected from the intelligent writing I'm used to seeing on the actual show. I've just never bothered to look it up I guess.
Prince of Bel-Air has some great racism messages, I’ve been watching the show for a while and they address it often. Carlton saying that the police were our friends was so innocent and shows how people in different financial situations see things.
going home after school is one of the most stressful things i have to deal with every week. i have no idea what my dad’s mood is, he’s either quiet and awkward or angry and hot headed for no particular reason, at least to me i guess. i cried when i first saw this short it’s too relatable 😭
I remember being younger and watching that episode of fresh prince of bel air which is weird bc i was way more into that so raven. I think i got the impact more from it. I do love how it pans out of Carlton symbolizing the realization.

The dyslexia P.S.A from Static Shock was how I found out I had dyslexia. I remember watching it and thinking "oh, that explains a lot."
I am also dyslexia 2 i found out in college.
I knew a few of these but only because Arthur and the Static Shock episodes were called out as being very racist episodes. However, I now have a better understanding that the purpose of the episodes was originally to deal with racism and teach about it and not the direct racism for the sake of racism. Plus, I have also never had the opportunity to see these episodes in question myself, so I have had to rely on what other people say about them which biases my previous understanding.

I think Steven Universe has handled certain difficult issues really well within the show, but the PSA was just comically bizarre. It felt like a caricature.
No issue with the avatar. I know how much added work that can add from an editing/recording perspective. I've been debating getting something like that too.
I always love when we get direct lessons about racism like this, but I have to say that I also love when they go more indirect routes to get past the sensors. One of my favorite examples of this is the episode Troq from Teen Titans. They get around it by making Starfire the target, and the racist is another alien who looks down on her for being Tameranian. Cyborg ends up being the first to find out, and they again find a clever way of having him relate to her for the mistreatment because he's part robot, which has already been a reoccurring source of insecurity for him throughout the show.
Starfire: You also know how it feels to be judged for how you look?
Cyborg: Of course I do. I'm part robot
Static is what helped me reach out about dyslexia it still affects me pretty bad on the daily. Thankfully, everything has spell check and grammar check now it's not the best but it helps a lot

Lots of DC fans in the early 2000s say how underrated static shock was… clearly as I never heard of it despite watching the likes of btas, justice league and teen titans a bunch when I was little.

Static Shock handles issues so well. There’s also the gun at school episode that was great. Media nowadays could learn from it. It’s not oh look racism or whatever issue is bad. There’s more to it and it’s real. I loved Fresh Prince of Bel Air. The episode with Will confronting his dad gets me bc i can relate

I love these cartoons. It's a great example of how media can demonstrate the issues present in society within demonizing the common man or degrading peoples identity. That and the fact they don't shove it in your face makes these shows definitely a 10/10 in my books.
I love Tuv man, every single vid is just so well edited and probably takes abt 2 or 3 days and you obviously love your fans and it is just amazing because there are so many celebs and yourubers who see there followers as "numbers" but you literally have full first thanking all of us. I ALWAYS burst in laughs when I see the racist boy of Garnet's PSA, for two reasons:
1- He says "people from different races cannot marry" and COMPLETELY ignores they're the same sex. It's like: "Hey, I may be racist, but being homophobe is a line I'm not willing to cross".
2- He is an actor. AN ACTOR, and he is the only one, in the end, who is completely aware of how silly his character is.
The hate towards the new Sesame Street BLM and Antiracism videos is so unwarranted. The videos are so wholesome and take a really deep look at how racism effects multiple ethnicities and its in a mature yet child-appropriate way!
The criticism is warranted when they do it so half assed.
True. When tackling a tough and deep topic, it's best you do it appropriately and respectfully. Otherwise it just feels like a disrespectful mockery.

I feel like kids shows teaching about racism is very important. Kids do need to learn that discrimination and hate is a horrible thing and we do need to learn more.

The cartoon Horseland (about a group of friends and their pets who live at a ranch) had an ep where the ranch is having a nationality themed parade. A Native American girl comes along and becomes a main character. The mean girls want to impress the new girl by wearing her traditional clothes. Problem is that they make them short, dye them pink and blue, and add glitter, which insults the new girl
I love this topic/style video so much! Even though the main topic is super heavy, I feel this video is super light and fun.

Great video/topic and appreciate the effort to be more consistent! Enjoying the content about cartoons especially since so many people here grew up with these various shows that had influence on the reality that we grew up with. To be honest don't hear an audio difference between real Tuv and cartoon Tuv, just put that mic up higher kind sir - no issues if it lies just below the chin. Keep up the great work though, there is a reason for the great growth in this channel's popularity!
this is my first vid from you and it was great! i will say while i like the idea of you splitting the format 50/50 between your face and character i think you could definitely use more expressions! the transitions between different shows being discussed while the fade out is kinda awkward with the open mouth expression and the moment of silence. overall the video is still edited very well, im excited to look at more of your content in the future!

I actually liked the way Steven Universe covered racism, it was in a simple and brief way to explain prejudice. It's weird how people thought it wasn't appropriate or wasn't done right for kids making it "Woke" or whatever but why is it that? Kids can experience racism why can't other learn its not right?
I think you explained it perfectly. The argument that kids shouldn’t learn about racism because “they should stay kids” is sooo flawed. Those kids n face racism too, and without knowledge they can be confused and allow it to keep happening to them.

Not sure how pushing for "be anti-racist" a.k.a. blaming everything on _fellow whitey,_ is teaching kids to be not racist.

I don't think the people found it inappropriate, just that they tried to tackle two things at once. It just mixed peoples mind when they show 2 boys wanting to get married but another kid coming and saying it's a race thing, I'm guessing people we're diverted from what they expected it to be mostly about. And kids do experience racism and should learn about it, but the kid that wasn't aware of it just apologized too quick and easy. It would've been better if Garnet took the kid out too show the kid that it does happen and worse then he thinks it is. That way the audience, the ones that aren't aware like the kid, can see how real and difficult it is. I think people also forget is that the purpose is to make kids aware of racism and teach them it's bad, and just having a kid say I'm sorry I didn't know wasn't going to teach or make them aware of it.

I dont think the inclusion of a gay couple in the first psa was too distracting. I think that was kinda why they put it in. To show how a gay couple shouldn’t be distracting and how it isn’t any different from a straight couple. I kinda like that, that gay people aren’t being treated as tokens, but rather just another couple no different from Steven and connie
Thanks for expressing your opinion. I’d also like to add that since romantic love is a major part of Garnet and Steven Universe in general, I think it’s good to show how widespread racism is and that it can even get in the way of love.

I remember when I was watching tuv back way before he hit tuv and him joking about him changing when he hit 1 mil subs and now he has 1.5 mil and I'm glad he's doing well and this is the best content I've seen so far and how far he has come.

the fresh prince one was my favorite representation of how it feels. when carlton is reflecting at the end on the fact he’s gonna be profiled like that forever, it hit me really hard because when i had my first racism experience that’s how it felt. there’s no easing into the topic once u learn it’s permanent for the foreseeable future, it all just hits u at once. u can try to rationalize it like carlton did, but after the first couple times u realize nothing you could’ve done would’ve changed the treatment you got.
