  • There's one really simple thing you should be doing with your newborn from day 1, that sadly gets overlooked quite often.
Doing this daily can help reduce the risk of your baby developing a range of problems such as positional plagiocephaly and torticollis. Often by the time these conditions become noticeable, they already require intervention to resolve, so it's obviously a much better outcome if you can avoid them altogether.
While positional plagiocephaly and positional torticollis can't always be avoided, there are things you can do to help reduce the likelihood of them becoming an issue. Implementing the steps in this video is one way you can do that.
    I hope this helps!

I never got told about this from my baby's pediatrician. However, I started noticing a couple of weeks ago that she favored turning her head to the left, hardly ever turned it to the right, and when she did turn it to the right she would only go so far and then just continue trying to follow objects in that direction with just her eyes, SO I did a lot of research myself rather than immediately taking her to her pediatrician and learned that she could possibly have or be developing Torticollis. After doing all the research and watching several different videos I learned how to properly start moving her head to both sides myself and with the use of objects that got her to want to move her head, and stretching the side she didnt want to turn to. I do believe I caught the issue before it became too severe and I needed a doctor involved because she will now easily turn her head both directions, and I will continually make her switch sides when I'm holding her, breastfeeding, playing with her, or she's laying down so that the issue doesn't arise again nor get worse. She's only 2 months, so I got lucky to catch it myself in time.

Our four month old has both of those conditions. We noticed from day 1 that he loved his right side. We tried to keep turning is head towards the left but he kept looking the other way and sleeping the other way. Took him to the chiropractor a handful of times and it helped. Tried to put his toys the other side but rarely helped. Did a lot of tummy time and other things recommended from you other videos. His doctor didn’t seem concerned at 2 and 4 months. Switched doctors and the new doctor was concerned and now we have to get evaluated for a helmet. 😢 it is slowly getting better as he gets stronger. Wished we would have switched doctors sooner. Our gut was telling us we needed professional intervention. :( thank you for your videos! Always such a pleasure to watch. We learn so much.

My son was breech and because of the way he was positioned in my belly he didn't have torticollis quite yet but they said if we didn't move his around from side to side he would end up with it. So we were able to avoid the torticollis but his head shape was already off a little bit because of his positioning in my belly, so now at 5 months old he will be getting sized for the band/helmet to help with his heads shape. So I couldn't agree with this video more! Make sure you're keeping your baby looking both ways! It's so important. I know in some cases (like mine) it's unavoidable no matter what you do but still change the direction they're looking so the get torticollis too! I'm so thankful he didn't end up with torticollis as well!

Our little one was in the NICU and from sitting in the crib a lot of the day developed a slight torticollis and had flattening on sides of the head. Play with them on their back and sort of hold they head center, and it really does slowly go away. We also found using a swing/car seat to sit him during awake times was helpful since they had those cushions that kept his head more center.

Wish I knew this sooner. Fortunately I went to my osteopathe 2 months after my son’s birth and could correct his torticoli as well as a plagiocephaly quite quickly. But man, it as heartbreaking to know that I did nothing for 2 months. This should be said by professionals right after birth as prevention. I turned his head at each nap, but he turned it very often during the same nap. It was very draining.

Oof. I got a bit scared by the title of this video, but, luckily, in this case we asked our pediatrician early on why our baby keeps turning their head in just one direction and so we managed to tackle the problem before it became serious. We weren't doing the routine from day one, but we managed to address it in time. Next time, we'll know.
But you gave nice tips in this video that we can use. All your videos are super useful, so thank you for them!

Hey Emma, both of these is what my oldest boy developed and I mentioned in another one of your videos when I commented. Like I mentioned there both his doctor and both my husband and I noticed it when he started severely favoring one side during play but we were able to get it rectified and the flat spot on his head (and the bald spot it caused) was able to correct itself with intervention.

My baby seemed to be born with torticollis. She didn't get much in flat spots and it was much later. It's hard to move the neck to the other side when it's painful for them. The nurse at the CLSC a week after she was born told me she had this. Went to an Osteopath, Chiropractor and Physiotherapist who specialized in working with babies.
Edit: also wanted to say, once she started to sit up more and then crawl the flat spot slowly went away.

    • @EmmaHubbard

Some babies are born with it, as it is due to the position they were in while they were in the womb. For these kids it's important to get help from an allied health professional straight away. Usually, it is something the doctors will check in the hospital prior to being discharged home.

Hi Emma! My 3.5 month old has bilateral clubbed feet which has made tummy time on the floor challenging with casting & now boots & bar wear for 23/7 for the next 3 months. Even though she doesn’t love being on her tummy on the floor, she does like being held upright so she can look around. She has good head and neck control in that position. It’s just tough to try alternate tummy time positions with the boots and bar on her feet when it comes to laying her on our chests or on our laps. I think she’s doing well. I’m just curious if you’ve offered any advice to other parents of clubfoot kids before?

I'm honestly not sure why this information isn't covered. I think it has to do with the fact that they are completing health checks. You could maybe ask your paediatrician to give you more information about preventative strategies at each appointment.

Our first had torticollis and had to go for pt to help correct the issue. Unfortunately, we should have made the decision to have her fitted for a helmet because she did end up getting a flat spot on her right side and some subtle difference in size and shape of her eyes. She's 7 now and you most often can't tell since she has curly hair and a beautiful smile. She hasn't noticed or asked about it yet but I feel like some day she will. I know it can be a serious issue and a source of legitimate worry, so let me share something light hearted. At some point in those chaotic first few months, we did struggle with this issue. No matter what we did, our daughter would always turn her head back to one side. I remember, when out of frustration, during the middle of the night, I turned her head and she would always turn it back, I said to my daughter: "OK, if that's what you want, then let your head be flat!". My wife just woke up to this very sentence and burst out laughing. Since then, when something random comes up, we often say "Why? Because then you will get a flat head!" :)

my newborn that is now 7 weeks old LOVES sleeping on her tummy and did since day one, we just found it out when she was 2-3 weeks old as we were practicing tummy time. And we let her do it as long as we supervise her., but lately even during the night (she auto wakes and asks for food every 2-3 hrs). Does and can this contribute to uneven skull? I dont notice the unevenness and weve been warned about this by every medical professional since day 1 so we have always made sure shes fed in different hand each time, sleeps on different sides on her bak etc.
And sometimes shes unable to calm down even during her witching hours which happen to be at bedtime. So we let her sleep on her tummy. Of course, we follow all safety procedures such as her matress isnt too soft for her to sink her head in and choke on, no toys in bed, shes in her sleeping bag (not swaddled, she hates it), etc. While i watch her thru the baby monitor she changes her head from left to right a lot and I didnt notice shes had near choking moments. She actually even gets annoyed and squeals if something even touches her face, like the sleeve of her sleeping bag, cuz it also triggers her reflex. So im like thinking its not completely unsafe...she still sleeps on her back when i can get her to, but if shes having it rough and its time to sleep thats the only things that works...thoughts?

When she was younger her skull was perfectly sculpted. She is able to move her head freely from side to side during the day, and is mostly on her stomach anyway. I think the problem is when she sleeps, she turns her head straight up in her sleep. I've tried and tried to gently turn her head to the side while she sleeps, but a few minutes later she turns it back in straight position. She sleeps around 11 hours during the night, and co-sleeps with me. When she is breastfeeding during the night, she sleeps with the head on the side, but otherwise always turns to head straight up. When she sleeps during the day she does it too, but takes the longest naps laying on me, where her head is to the side.
I don't know what to do, but am eager to fix it before it's too late. Any advice?

Hi! Now that your little one is 4 months of age, turning her head during sleep won't work as well - as she will just move it to the position she prefers at this age.
What you can do though is try to remove the pressure from that spot during her wake time. You can do this by:
      - doing lots of tummy time (which it sounds like you are already doing),
      - limiting the time she spends in car seats (only use them for travel)/bouncers/rockers or gliders as these place pressure on the back of the head,
      - consider doing some supported sitting (where you sit her on your lap while she plays with toys),
      - Consider using a baby carrier at times to take the pressure off.
I would also recommend you talk to a paediatric physical therapist (AKA physiotherapist) for more specific advice.
      I hope that helps!

This is very timely! I've started to suspect torticollis in my almost 4 month old as he really favors his right side. It's especially noticeable now that he's starting to swat and grab with primarily his right arm. I can hardly get him to turn his head to the left when he's on his tummy, even with toys and me being on that side I basically have to force him and he turns it right back. I've heard chiropractic care or craniosacral therapy can sometimes aid in this... not sure what to do next.

Hi @paigekoehl7032 so glad to hear this came at the right time. It sounds like it would be good to get your little one checked out to see if he does have torticollis. The best person to see for this is a paediatric physiotherapist (AKA physical therapist). They are the most skilled in assessing and addressing this condition. ❤

Hi Emma! My 1-year-old sleeps only on sides (both left and right) but never on his back. Is it okay in a long run (for his back).....

I think it should be fine in the long run. If you are concerned for any reason though I recommend you talk to your little one's doctor.

I'm not sure if it's normal but if the baby is feeding normally, taking enough milk and is not loosing weight,Dr's in England are not concerned.

Odio llorar, siempre lloro y no soluciono nada.
Soy horrible, he tenido muy malos pensamientos.

Omg…I had no idea I had to do all of that besides tummy time. What I will admit is that I let my girls sleep on their stomach despite the SIDS warning because I wanted to get more sleep. I was tired of them waking up every hour when sleeping on their back vs 4 hours off/on when sleeping on their stomach. I did make sure that my children were able to hold their heads up on their own before letting them rest on their stomach. I’m sorry I couldn’t take it anymore after 6 weeks.

We always place baby on his back to sleep but he has started rolling and will roll onto his left side frequently. He switches back and forth between his back and his side. He is 3 months old. He has been to an Osteopathic Manipulative Therapist for tongue tie treatment, and she said he didnt have torticollis or anything. He turns his head both directions without issues during the day, but definitely prefers that left side at night. Is that something to be concerned about?

Lucky my kido never had this problem with favouring a side. He did get a small flat spot because I kept holding him in my left arm cause I’m right handed, we caught it and started changing/ rotating feeding sides.

I diligently followed the safe sleep advice (sleep on back, no pillows) and guess what happened, the back of my baby's head flattened. Then I was told by the mach nurse to give him regular tummy time ON the floor but a 2 week old didn't want any of it. So I was at a loss until the GP advised that not all babies have perfectly round heads.
