Great video... I was an Inspector at Union Pacific for several years before a work injury ended my railroad career, but the Caboose is where the Brakeman & Conductor would ride and they sat in those chairs to watch for derails or whatever could cause problems and if they seen danger the Brakeman would grab that Brake Valve that had the Pressure gauge and either slow it down slowly by easing off pressure or throw it over to Dump all the air at once. Which in turn would fully engage all the brakes to stop the train as fast as possible... It's called "Big Holing it"..., because a Train can still roll with small amounts of air leaking off, but not if there was a "Big Hole" that locks down the brakes, so that Brake lever when thrown created a "Big Hole" and locked down ALL the brakes... Your Caboose is cool, but if you ever get the chance you should look inside the Union Pacific Executives Cars that the Executives travel on to each Hub usually 1 or 2 times a year... They are old style Passenger Cars that were gutted and remodeled and are now literally rolling Executive Suites with one car as a sitting & dining car with a fully stocked Bar & restroom, another is like a Board Room to have meetings, another has Bedroom with Shower & Toilet and the 4th is a Chef's Car with a Full Chef's Kitchen and a Servers Prep Station with a walk-in cooler FULL of Aged Steaks & Fresh Lobster, Salmon & produce. The 2 servers are always 18 to 25 year old girls who look like they could be Playboy Models... It's usually 4 cars and a locomotive with each car being around 50 foot long... Those 4 railcars probably cost $5 million or more to set them up the way they are setup... Super fancy.... I know this because I was ordered by my Foreman to restock the ice, but "DO NOT talk to anyone or go inside, Just leave the ice and go" when they stopped at the Fort Worth Hub... Well I knew the Executives weren't there as I passed them leaving, so I walked right in and gave the Chef the ice and did a quick walk through... My Foreman wasn't very happy with me that day, but I didn't give a shit.. All the Directors, Managers & Foremen all jumped through hoops to KISS THE EXECUTIVES ASSES when they came to town. It was pathetic to watch them act how they do,, especially when a Union Inspector like me would walk right up to them and introduce myself and shake their hand and talk to them... I was threatened with Termination over that time. My Manager turned white like he had just seen a damn Ghost, so after the Executives left and he washed his face and brushed his teeth he called me into his office and tried to chew me out, but I held my ground and told him, "You Company Guys can jump through hoops, suck up and kiss their asses all you want, but I won't. They are only Men and that's how I'll treat them. They can't eat you"... Well he stormed out severely pissed off and I wasn't ever asked to take them ice anymore and was always sent out of town to inspect something when they came to town~! lol
🚂🚂🚂. My gramma carried a picture of my grandpa standing in front of a caboose just like this one. He was a brakeman for years and in a freak accident lost his arm. Took hours to set him free and nearly died. My gram couldn’t handle all the moods he’d have later and while he was out with the boys took her three kids and jumped on a train for California. Before she died she game a trunk with journals he had kept. I nearly cried reading all his feelings as he searched for her and his family. Sadly one week before I found where he lived at MO/OK state line he had died. One year after gram had died too. Amazing stories about the train rides across country and how he loved to wave to all the kids from the caboose. Everything really fell in place for you as you acquired it and sure did a great job redoing it and preserving it too. I could envision him in that seat waving to kids. Don’t know how I happened onto your videos but I have a rough time sleeping at night and have thoroughly enjoyed watching many of your older videos while staying up. I applaud you for keeping up with your comments cuz that’s time consuming. I do hope you’ll be able to read this cuz this video was months ago. I wish to say that your place and all the work you’ve put into it is incredible. Do you have a degree in architecture or engineering? Your home is fitted with details the common man wouldn’t know how to do. And how you blended the ring and hangar is amazing. The security system you designed has so much detail it blows my mind. This is surely a forever home and ranch to be lived in and the land to be worked hopefully by your kids and grandkids forever in the future. So many places are just abandoned cuz it’s too much work. You apparently have lived a full life in the past with dreams of what you’ve created already. And that’s what I always get excited about.....the history and the hopes for this awesome place called home. We trained showed and bred 48 horses and AI was new discovery. Also knew a lady in Maryland that was using zebras and donkeys to clone her famous purebred Arabians from Poland. She kept them hidden way deep on her ranch cuz wasn’t acceptable at the time. When we bred horses it had to be done in a protective area so neighbors or public couldn’t see or county would fine you or shut you down if reported. In the 70s the AI was suppose to help the many stallions that had severe injuries from a wild mare breaking the tie downs and give a deadly kick. But then it was used for other things such as traveling a distance for a costly breeding leaving either horse there until the mare conceived. Always looking for the perfect pedigree and a lot of fails. We had a huge cattle run for many miles we’d always go on from the mountains to near San Diego and that included a chuck wagon like you have. Our dogs were trained like yours and today I still miss them. So many of the videos I’ve seen reminds me of distant time. A life I’d loved until an awful accident. No complaints about hard work and early rising although like you I hated the constant rain and snow and icy winds. A good sweat was better cus knew I’d be able to cool down. Your operation is so much larger but the work is the same. But the joys taking the small kids along like you did with your grandson those are moments never forgotten. Adding your helicopters has to be so exciting for them. In time that little guy will yearn and beg you to teach him cuz the freedom of the skies. The hard winter will be here soon and you’ll wish to ignore that damn clock. Once working and smelling the air and seeing what you own miles of land around you......then you’ll know how blessed you are. I miss that so now I’ll follow you and dream of what I once had and just the feeling of the great outdoors. Sorry this is long but I’ve really enjoyed watching all your videos and those I haven’t seen yet. You have a calming way of presenting yourself and so much to share. I am looking forward to next time and many more. 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Wow! Thanks for sharing your story. I don't have an engineering or architectural degree. I have a dyslexic mind. It makes me very good at designing and engineering things. I also have a wife named Bonnie!
Why don't you have a TV show? I stumbled on your videos by accident. I'm a 60 year old woman, raised in the Midwest. Not an adventurous person at all. Now, I'm wishing I had a life like yours. You're so fun to watch and so damn intelligent, athletic and funny. God got stuck giving you so much talent, son!! Damn!!!
Just plain cool. When I see ATSF, it's a family thing. My great grandfather came to America from Ireland, moved to Atchison, KS to work on the RR. The Bible says "don't envy" but I'm envious. Love the channel.
Love it! My grandson when he was about 4 was obsessed with the Thomas the tank trains. He had every piece of those trains My daughter and son-in-law took him to somewhere around Eureka Springs, Arkansas, took him a train ride and they stayed in a Caboose Bed and Breakfast. He is 28 now and still remembers it!
My buddy has two, they left one almost all original with the hanging “bunks” built a small porch between the two and the other they put in a small kitchen and a “master” bunk… makes for great ranch weekends and get togethers. I’ve been jealous ever since I seen them!
Thats Pretty Darn Cool ! I've seen Some pretty Neat Things on some big Ranches around Texas. We Know a Family In Tx That Has a 200 ft long Building that every 20ft wall section tilts up and open .. and on one end there's a complete Tire shop and Mechanic shop and fully stocked Parts House for all Equipment and vehicles They own .. Hoses, Belts, Tires, Lights, alternators, radiators Etc... Its Crazy.. 64 thousand acres They live six miles off of the Highway And everything is converted to natural gas....Jason Represents Texas Well, Texas Is the best Country on Earth...!! I love being a Texan
You did a nice job on the restoration remodel. As a former conductor I have spent a little time in these. They were already removed from regular service during my career but we did occasionally use them as a shoving platform for taking a train in a reverse movement for a longer distance than one would want to ride the side of a boxcar. You were spot on with your information about it.
Love the caboose. You know how to do things with class and style. It's a terrible waste when trains derail. Even if nothing is wrong with stuff, they won't let you buy it. A lot of trains loaded with new cars derailed in Nebraska. They wouldn't sell any.
That caboose is so cool! I wouldn't mind living in such a dwelling, seeing as to how I'm a city girl, living in Brooklyn NY. The idea of a bnb is not a bad one at all! Thank you for the tour!
