@@theeclectic2919they probably knew each other in their youth since their dads were business partners. I think the idea that Elaine has had a crush on Ben for a while explains a lot of her actions in the film. She’s clinging onto the idea of him that she has, holding on tight even in spite of the affair with her mother.

The ending of this film is so powerful and one of the best moments in the history of cinema. So much is said once they are on the back of the bus and yet nothing is said, their faces present the dialogue and an uncertain future is mutely looked at by the both of them as they ride away in that bus.

The simple, nonchalant way she gets the waiter’s attention after Ben fumbled and failed to flag him down is a perfect snapshot of their contrasts. He’s skittish and vulnerable as a yearling antelope’s first time at the watering hole. She’s a seasoned alcoholic who has the drink-ordering part down pat, with a leopard’s confidence of being the apex predator in her natural environment.

The proposal scene is very underrated. The beautiful lighting, the way they’re hiding in the shadows as they must hide their love from their families, the way he kisses her so gently, the way she buries her face into his shoulder, the way they whisper, the way he presses his lips to her hair … it’s just so romantic. Yes it’s pretty weird that he was involved with her mom and their relationship may not last because of it, but it’s important to remember that Mrs Robinson was a horrible mother to Elaine; her ferocious slaps at the end prove her to be abusive. She resents Elaine just because the pregnancy forced her to marry Mr Robinson, as if Elaine could possibly help or be responsible for the circumstances of her own conception?? Mrs Robinson also takes advantage of Ben’s loneliness and manipulates him into believing she is his only escape from his parents. Elaine shows him there is more to life than that, and Ben shows her she should not allow her parents to control her anymore. I think there’s enough there to make them a sympathetic couple.

The fact some comments are saying they are disgusted by this film. It's literally every 20 something year old guys fantasy to sleep with a 40 something year old woman that looks like her lol. She never rapes him, he's not a kid, she doesn't even shame him for being nervous instead of masculine. What they find disgusting about this movie I do not know, obviously apart from when she lies to the daughter about him raping her rather than telling her the truth that she seduced him near the end of the film. That was fucked up.

The camerawork in this film is satisfying and remarkable, in that, it reveals the psyche of the characters in the scene, especially Benjamin.
Some examples: That leg shot where Ben delivers the famous seduction line symbolizes that he’s trapped.
The moment Elaine finds out about ben’s affair with her mother, the camerawork is blurry. But once it racks focus on her, she immediately reacts to the news.
At Ben’s graduation party, the camera is shaky and close to his face, showing that he feels nervous when awkwardly interacting with his parents’ friends.

I was 25 yrs old when I saw this. My girlfriend saw it too. She thought that Anne Bancroft / Mrs Robinson was "horrible". I could not admit to her that I thought Anne Bancroft was more attractive than her and Katherine Ross.

Read the book by Charles Webb. He lined out all the dialog perfectly. The movie follows the book nearly to the letter. Except we don't get to see the nervous look on Dustin Hoffman's face when Anne Bancroft says, "Did you know I was an alcoholic?"

These scenes are comedy gold! Dustin Hoffman’s awkward and nervous behavior is hysterical but at the same time relatable to many young men when losing their virginity.

Whenever I feel down or bored, I put on "The Graduate," then suddenly I find myself smiling. Bancroft was so good in the role that I think it was difficult for her to improve upon, and why not?? It was pure genius, a combination of raw sexuality, frustrated emotions, equaling utter hilarity. The final selection of a totally unknown Dustin Hoffman was equally genius, especially when they wrote the role exclusively for Robert Redford. On the Charlie Rose Show, she said that she always knew when it was running on TV because total strangers, mainly men, would give her "that look" in the street, with a wink and a grin.

Well Mr Gould...He must have been a wonderful roommate to have in college in your dorm...Dustin Hoffman, that is...Thank You for being one of the most wonderful leaders, mentors, and teacher's of the "arts" that so many have been allowed to become apart of...Both at Irvine High School and Northwood High School...There's even a reference to a Crosby off of the most traveled street in the world, as I was told in CONfidence while travelling on a bus in Los Angeles, Wilshire Blvd...In Koreatown of all places, which happens to have quite a few references to The City of Irvine in it...The Normandie and Wilshire Purple (B) Station used to display an El Toro reference in it...Good Job and Fine Work to the best teacher out there...
