I have an Albion Norman and I'm waiting for an Albion Knight and Albion Reeve (5 months waiting for those two so far). My norman has exactly the same issues. A few scratches on the finish of the blade, the guard that is coarsely ground out on one side, and very small pitting on the pommel and guard. I felt exactly the same way when I received the Norman and closely inspected it. I think that when you weigh the pros (semi-custom, hand assembled, excellent quality steel in the blade, hot-peened pommel, solid hilt assembly, great customer service) against the cons (everything you mentioned), it's something that can be overlooked. In my opinion, these are still the best and most historically accurate swords that I can get my hands on. I hope to add a dozen more to my collection in the next couple of years.
Great video. I really enjoyed it.

Thanks. I agree with you 100% on the fact that the pros outweigh the cons. I also agree that they have several swords I'd like to acquire over time lol.

They use 6150 spring steel with a little silicon in it. It is the best steel you can use in a european sword, top quality. And remember, less is moore. It is the lines, handling and the quality that makes good weapons beautiful! ;-)) I have the Knud and the Earl. My Knud have some casting marks but got a super tight fit between the guard and the blade. A perfect fit there. If have any questions about a spesific Albion model, just ask me. I got 85 Albions,so it is a good chanse that i have the same modell. Some of the swords i even got 2 like ones, but in different color. Then i can also se if it is made the same quality. One for the walls and one for cutting you know ;-)

85 FRICKIN' ALBIONS ?!?!?! WOW !!! Damn man... i am very jealous of you... I hope i have the extra money to own one myself one day. And even then, i have to find a way to send one to Greece (where i live) without having it confiscated by the ridiculous customs... or having me pay a lot of extra money in stupid taxes... What is your favourite two-handed longsword, that you think is both good at cutting and at thrusting ?

Do you have the Jarl, Stamford, or Gaddhjalt?? Looking at buying one of the three and would like to hear your thoughts on them if you can, thanks

The fit of the guard and blade would disappoint me especially for the price but it's still a nice sword. Viking Age swords all had small grips. The Swedish swords were a little larger but still small. Roland Warzecha shows how they were gripped. Enjoy your videos. Keep up the good work.

@Rich Stone, Roland Warzecha shows how HE THINKS they were gripped. The jury is still out on that one as far as I know.

    "Best thruster". Nice.
I'd be upset about that sloppy guard fit too. You definitely make the best reviews.

Half a decade late to the party here but I'll share my experience. First albion I got was the knight (received in 2018) and it's absolutely emaculate, no casting marks whatsoever and perfect fit of the blade to the guard, full 10/10. The next year I got the Sempach and it had much of the same issues as shown in this video, casting marks on the pommel and somewhat rough guard to blade fit

I have an Albion Ghaddhjalt that i recently got from them and the fit and finish is excellent. I looked and looked for something and i see no scratches or rough surfaces around the handle , pommel or blade. i just ordered a Thegn and cant wait to get it. I would THINK that a mark or 2 wouldnt bother me so quite crying aboutt it . Its a sword and a Viking sword at that . Vikings dont whine about silly stuff! RFOL

Looks like sanding marks. Without somebody checking another's work, it does happen. There's a lot of marks that we miss that another eye sees. My deal is, at what level of polish do we accept at the cost of these blades, we can't expect a matchless finish on every sword at this price point , can we? I've always wondered that. Mirror finish admittingly is an extreme amount of work by hand, anything less perfect, the finish should probably be done mechanically like bead blast or belt finish and then call it done. Myself, I've never been able to leave polishing at anything less than matchless because of those visible sanding marks show up under strong lighting at different angles, always brings up those marks. Surely back in the day when quality swords were made by masters, there had to be marks at some level, unless polished to matchless every time.

I really like this sword, and great review of you!!
However I think the critisiem on the finish, although fair I would not consider that as importent at all. Two weaks ago I finaly got arround to visit the Imperial Treasury in Vienna and by your standards you would not have liked the Imperial Sword of the Holy Roman Empire.

Thank you! I agree with you. I have seen a lot of famous originals that would drive me absolutely insane. I am sure wear and age plays a role, but I also read a great article the other day discussing the fact that modern, high end swords are generally far superior in terms of symmetry etc... than historical originals. Additionally, given the difficulty in removing imperfections in the steel in less modern forms of smithing, I am sure that would drive me crazy also. However, I think we judge swords for what they are. You know, if I buy a cheaper Hanwei, or Windlass and it has weld marks, or some imperfections in the leather etc... it doesn't bother me in the slightest, given that I get what I pay for. I think my problem here is more in the fact that this is an expensive sword coming from a higher end maker known for quality. And while I absolutely do not doubt the quality of this weapon; arguably even better than the original, I think I hold it to a higher standard because of the hype that surrounds Albion swords. Does it live up to the hype? I don't really think so. Is it an awesome sword, built with high quality materials and put together as solid as a tank? Absolutely!

Yes from that standpoint you are right, from a sword crafed with modern Technology one can and should expect also a perfect finish.
What do you think of sword makers like this one form Poland, he is not trying to craft swords out of our time, but rather to recreate how the used to be back then?

I liked the character marks. The mild steel fittings did have pits on both my Oakeshott and Kern. Both blades had machine marks on them and were not mirror finish.
I think it makes them look more genuine.
Just looked at both my swords and while my Oakeshott is close to perfect, my Kern has the same minor hilt flaw on one side as yours.

I work on expensive marble I see way too many machine marks on that all the swirls are not acceptable. I want to get a night and I would be pissed after probably waiting a year

I actually cancelled an order with Albion because of this. I'd like a Tyrolean, but am in the same boat as you. Do I want to spend that much money, wait a year, and end up with "character marks". I'm thinking of going with a custom maker next.

Oakshotte Type 10 or Geibig type 5? Maybe both.

The character marks looks like nothing, probably makes the sword more interesting to look at i think.
I get your point about the guard not fitting the blade well though that's a bummer.

These are awfully expensive for a laser cut (not forged) blade. I was interested in a Caithness until I did some research

Albion are ok swords, but over priced based on their construction. They are ground high carbon steel...not forged. This leaves weak points along the edges of the blades...exposed end grain. Not good!! Look at Lockwood or Valiant/Vision. I own a couple...great swords! Plus, less "character" marks.
