Mahalo for watching! Here is the full Oahu itinerary without a rental car: thehawaiivacationguide.com/oahu-hawaii-itinerary-seven-days-no-car/ Have a great trip to Hawaii and stay safe.
What about carseats? We have a 1 and 4 year old? How do yall get around with ubers/lifts etc with carseats?.. and we love biking but I'm sure baby seats/trailers aren't available
I’ve been living on Oahu for 17 years without a car. The transit system is pretty good here, just might take a little longer to get where you’re going. 🤙
My husband and I went to Oahu for our honeymoon and no car rental. We went everywhere from Waikiki to the North Shore and all over the island through The Bus. It was the best!
@But I'm not a rapper you can get the bus card at any ABC store but you have to check like which bus or buses to take to arrive at your destination. I would just use google maps and it says what bus to take and where there is a bus stop 🚏
we did 8 days in ohau just using bus passes. we did have private transit to and from the airport but thats all. the rest was on the public buses. so worth it.
My wife and I honeymooned in Oahu and stayed in Waikiki for 7 days in 2014, we only rent a car for one day and we drove around the island and visited a lot of places in North Shore on this day. We took the PCC tour bus to the park and spent 1 day there. The rest of the days we used Da Bus to visit places like Pearl Harbor, Diamond Head, Hanauma Bay, Kailua State Beach and many other places. It took a long time to use public transportation but we were on our honeymoon so it was a great opportunity to spend time with each other. Our hotel, Pacific Beach, charged 30 dollars a day for self parking! Great video! I enjoy watching your channel!
You clearly did Oahu right without a rental car. Sounds similar to our recommended itinerary! When on island time, the bus isn't a bad option. Thanks for sharing your honeymoon!
You can take the #60 bus from Ala Moana over to the windward side. It goes over to Kaneohe and then up to and then past Kuloa Ranch, all the way to the far end of Haleiwa. And back. If you get a bus pass and load it, you can get around very reasonably. Plus, you can transfer to get a bus to Kailua and Lanikai and not have to park.
Those are great tips! Thanks for sharing The Bus information! We will have to try that. Not having to worry about parking at Kailua or Lanikai is a big plus.
We have stayed on O'ahu for weeks at a time w/o a rental car. We get bus passes. The bus is efficient, cheap and goes all over the island. No need to grind your way through the heavy traffic. Once we rented a car for a performance we wanted to see and it was such a hassle, we never did it again. You can reach the Bus on line and check out schedules, destinations, fares etc
As a former resident of the big island I can confirm even there you can get around from just hitch hiking and public transportation, I did it for a year
We stayed five days as a family of four in Oahu with no car (we did rent one for the Big Island which we hopped to next). We actually packed our kids Razor scooters in the suitcases and we zipped around Honolulu and Waikiki no problem! My husband and I rented the bikes when we had farther than a few miles to go. They even rode their scooters to Diamond Head from the Hilton! It was a ton of fun, I felt like we saw more of the island that way. We did not venture to the north side of the island though, maybe next time!
Thanks for the tip on Ubers. Ubers/taxis don’t always take dogs so that’s our issue with using them. Your trip sounds great with the razors. Get the kids moving and experience so much more!
Do you think you could’ve done that with a 1 and 4 year old? I don’t think I’m comfortable letting my four year old ride his scooter around the busy unfamiliar streets of Hawaii and I think having a 1 year old pretty much seals the deal on a must have rental car but if you feel differently I’d like to know.
@@mustang9549 our kids are upper elementary school/middle school. They rode the scooters on the sidewalks mostly, unless it was crowded then we carried them. I agree, having toddlers makes it difficult, unless they would ride in a stroller for you.
Our first trip to Hawaii ever we camped at Malaekahana just north of Laie for two weeks with no car! We used the bus to get around and long walks. We picked one thing a day to go do and devoted the day to it. Got to see all the residential places & real life along the way. It was amazing. Also great on the wallet
@@TheHawaiiVacationGuide and we're actually leaving tomorrow to camp at olowalu on Maui this time with the kids and a family tent. Staying last two days in an off grid cabin in Kula can't wait to get my Maui on and see some 🐋🐬🐢
Getting around Oahu without a car is easy. The #60 is the lifeline that goes through all of windward North shore and is not much slower than driving if you time bus schedule correctly
I love your videos! You do a great job. My first trip to Oahu was car free. We stayed in Kailua and had no issue having an amazing 10 days without a car. We bused over to Kailua from the airport and then walked to our Airbnb. Well, Airbnb rules have changed on the island now. I now live on Oahu and have been carfree for a couple of years now. I love it. We have Hui car rental when we need a car, but walking, biking and busing is sooo much easier than driving and trying to find a place to park on Oahu. Well done on your video!!
Thanks for sharing! Very cool that you are getting around well without a car. It takes some of the stress away from life to not have a car. Less is more at times!
I really enjoy your Sunny Disposition and joy for life. Amazing content and real life examples. This video is very helpful and informative. Can’t wait for our trip in early March 🤩
Been to Oahu first time last year with 2 kids. Amazing trip and we did not rent a car. We took ubers and the bus to get everywhere including north shore, pearl harbor, kaylua beach... it was easy and amazing. Also you have the freedom of mind of not thinking about parking and driving. 100% recommend. It was real cheaper also
I just did a version of this last month- Oahu with no car. We stayed in Waikiki and used the trolley Blue Line to do more of the active stuff for two night. Then we were at Aulani for seven nights and did a rental car for one day through the Alamo at Aulani for a North Shore day. Loved it 🥰
You did it well! Great idea to rent a car from Aulani to North Shore. Waikiki Trolley is a great option. Their downtown Honolulu line would be good for our day three tour.
I will be going February 2023 for my honeymoon. I’ve been watching all your videos and I’m just getting even more excited.Thank you so much for your advice and help.
Love the idea of no car rental and would love to try it sometime but we got SO LUCKY! We are going to Oahu at the end of this month got a 4 door jeep rental for 8 days for $400 😱
Rental car prices have gotten closer to normal, compared to last summer. You can get good deals but beware those parking fees as it all adds up! Have a great trip and enjoy the Jeep!
Thanks for this video; i just actually thought about this last week. We’re only there four days, then hopping to Maui, so we’ll likely just spend time in Waikiki, Diamond Head and downtown.
The hotel I usually stay at in Waikiki charges $48 per night plus 4.8% tax for parking for hotel guests. Then add on tips for the valet when they bring your car… I know you mentioned parking fees but I wanted to make sure that people have an idea of how much they can be.
Thanks for sharing! We used $35 parking fee per night. One can get deals on a rental car but parking fees are always there plus valet tips and taxes. Good point.
Look for condos instead of hotels - many of them include parking and you don't have all of the extra fees that hotels charge - We book through Ali'i Beach Rentals and they have been great. (they list on VRBO also)
I went car less this past June. Rented a scooter one day out of the two weeks I spent there and that was a blast. Otherwise I was on vacation and as a driver by trade I didn’t want to sit behind a wheel. And yes the bus system is awesome. I got “lost” on the trails outside Honolulu and when I finally came out there was a bus stop 1/2 mile down the road. Waited…hopped on…switched buses once…and was back to where I was staying.
I was in Oahu 4 times (every time for 2 weeks) and we never had a car :) now we're going for 8 weeks and also won't have a car. the bus is absolutely fine :))
I have been to Oahu and while you’re right that you don’t need a rental when you’re staying in Waikiki it is better and time saver to rent one in general. When you’re on vacation you only have a limited number of days and you need to maximize those days and while the bus system is great it could be slow and it doesn’t take you all over Oahu like the North Shore. I went to Oahu prior to the Pandemic 😷 and we rented a car for 3 days we didn’t rent for the week. It was so worth it. We went to the places that you need a car to get too ie. North Shore and for us it was needed/worth it. That was just what works for us and worth it. If you just plan on staying in Waikiki and not venture off to other parts of the island I agree a car is not worth it but if you plan on seeing the other parts the car is definitely with it.
So true. We've been to Oahu multiple times and rented a car for the duration each time (10 days). We needed it when we stayed in a rental on North Shore, but in Waikiki, the car stayed in the parking garage for most of the time we were there. Next time, we want to stay for a month and we will only rent a car for days when we need to shop for groceries or do specific things where we don't want to rely on bus schedules. We've shopped local rental car companies and Owl looks like the one we will use.
Loved this video. You are correct. Because on Oahu the bus system is pretty good and my wife and I even traveled to the Polynesian center for the day. Car rentals now on the island are really high. Mike in Colorado. Ps. My daughter lives at Pearl Naval base.
I love all of your videos we can’t wait until all this Covid is contained so we can fly without the mask. This time every year we go to Maui for the Humpback whale tours
Does your itinerary include whether or not you need public transportation? If not maybe something nice to add on where to catch buses or shuttles near destinations. Traveling in August and going to use your itinerary just have it bought it yet
Our itineraries are meant for a rental car so someone can explore more of the island. You can pick days and use public transportation but it takes a lot longer, harder to do all the stops.
Some sources I've seen say Hawaii is one of the few States where you need a licence to use rental scooters (legally, enforcement not withstanding). Do you know for sure if that's true?
Uber prices have gone way up, do you think taxi is not cheaper? Upon checking the app, an uber ride from waikiki to disney's resort is approx $60, ouch. Great videos! You guys definitely earned my thumbs up.
Yeah but I feel like most people are coming from outsides Hawaii in general so the extra $300 on top of the 3-5k minimum being spent to get there and stay there for 7 days or more is really nothing. I also feel like as long as you plan to leave early on in the day to get where you need to go the traffic isn’t really a factor. I’m planning a vacation there in the next month or so and I couldn’t imagine not having a car for a family of 4.
you fit in one of our three reasons to get a car, you have a family so the ease is worth the effort. We always get a car but wanted to show how to do Oahu without a car. It is possible, but not right for all. Have a great trip!
Hi Guys, Just been bingeing your videos as my partner and I are travelling to Hawaii in December from Australia as our other plans have been cancelled due to COVID-19 I’m wondering how much of an issue not renting a car is in Oahu as opposed to Maui? We have rented a car for our time in Maui but not Oahu would you recommend that we need one for our time in Oahu. We are staying in Waikiki at the Hilton
See if you like the type of itinerary we share in this video to decide if not getting a rental car sounds right for you. If it is two of you and staying in Waikiki, not getting a rental car is very doable.
It all sounds good in a video but is not that realistic. It is doable to see some places without a car but it is also very very hard , takes long time and very time consuming. Let alone bus goes on average 30-40 min apart. In addition, Uber prices have doubled since 2021 when they had shot the video. North shore Uber costs $80-90 one way, not both. Lighthouse trail $40 one way. Do your research before deciding on going without a car especially if traveling with kids. Took trip to Oahu in September 2022
Yes, that’s an easy way to cruise Honolulu but wouldn’t take them farther out. You can rent a 50cc moped without a motorcycle license. It can be cost effective for a couple and parking is easier.
Thanks for the comment! We have a video on vacation rentals vs hotels. Vast majority of vacation rentals are owned by out of state investors or out of state second home owners. All islands are cracking down on them as some are illegal. We were going to do a video on identifying illegal vaca rentals but that is hard. Vrbo helped eliminate 2000 illegal rentals on Kauai last year. Vaca rentals are best for large groups to save money. After cleaning fees, taxes, and Airbnb fees they are expensive.
@@TheHawaiiVacationGuide good point. i noticed some on airbnb saying "LEGAL" and always wondered.. out of state investors need to kick rocks and let the locals thrive on their own island!
Thank you for this Channel, I love the information you guy's give about hawaii I can dream of living In paradise, Me & my wife will be Honeymooning in Oahu, would you be willing to make a video on romantic thing's to do as a couple on Oahu?

Loved this video. We are planning a trip to Waikiki with our 2 yr old. Can we take our son in an Uber without a carseat? Also is it possible to hike the Diamond head with a child?
Diamond Head is an easy hike but strollers can't go up the trail so you have to walk or carry them. It can get slippery on the uneven surfaces. Car seats are required as far as I know.
I be n Hawaii this Sept I be staying n Oahu Waikiki I wana do the Lava boat tour on the BIG Hawaii island do thy have Daily Flights going bk & forth on those islands ????
The lava isn't flowing into the ocean right now but the volcano is erupting, you can do a one day guided tour from Oahu to the Big Island here: www.hawaiitours.com/oahu/one-day-island-trips/?ref=Jordan (we earn a small commission with this link at no cost to you!) Or see our article on island hopping here: thehawaiivacationguide.com/hawaii-island-hopping/
we take car seats with us, we have a light travel seat that we share here: thehawaiivacationguide.com/hawaii-travel-gear/ We have a strap for our 5 year old that we will share too. It is hard to lug them to baggage drop-off but they are free to check. You can rent them at the car rental but they are expensive.
That’s a popular option. Last summer Turo was a good option but not cheaper. But a good way to support local businesses and I bet one can find a good price.
I'll have to respectfully disagree thinking Diamond Head is overrated. At least for that price that was too quick of a hike. The view wasn't bad but to me that's a one-time thing I would not revisit it. Because my group had to go pass, we at least got our money's worth but I would not pay the normal fee just a hike up Diamond Head.
Hi, does Uber or Lyft in Honolulu take a kid, 4 yr old, off course with parents, without car seat? What is the law there? Or should I bring car seat there? This is a great video!!
I'm only going for three days and just want to go to the Dole Plantation. Is there like a bus to take over there or do I just stick to uber/lyft or taxi?? What is cheapest and how long will it take me from Waikiki zoo to get to Dole plantation? ;_; Thank you!

that is great to hear! thanks for sharing
Nice video! How do I pay for the transport in Oahu? Can I pay visa for Bikki bikes or the buses?
Uber prices have gone way up, do you think taxi is not cheaper? Upon checking the app, an uber ride from waikiki to disney's resort is approx $60, ouch. Great videos! You guys definitely earned my thumbs up.
I assume taxi rates went up too. Worth trying them both. During the summer, surge pricing for uber is common.
Hi Guys,
Just been bingeing your videos as my partner and I are travelling to Hawaii in December from Australia as our other plans have been cancelled due to COVID-19
I’m wondering how much of an issue not renting a car is in Oahu as opposed to Maui?
We have rented a car for our time in Maui but not Oahu would you recommend that we need one for our time in Oahu.
We are staying in Waikiki at the Hilton
See if you like the type of itinerary we share in this video to decide if not getting a rental car sounds right for you. If it is two of you and staying in Waikiki, not getting a rental car is very doable.
I am here right now and using bus and uber. No hassles and no fees.
Can anyone tell me how I’d go about getting a 7 day pass? As well as if the bus would take you from the HNL to and from hotel?
It all sounds good in a video but is not that realistic. It is doable to see some places without a car but it is also very very hard , takes long time and very time consuming. Let alone bus goes on average 30-40 min apart. In addition, Uber prices have doubled since 2021 when they had shot the video. North shore Uber costs $80-90 one way, not both. Lighthouse trail $40 one way. Do your research before deciding on going without a car especially if traveling with kids. Took trip to Oahu in September 2022
Have fun stuck in Honolulu traffic. Lived and worked for several years.
When I visited Maui, I noticed some folks rented motorcycles (or mopeds).
Is this something you’d recommend or consider?
Thanks
Yes, that’s an easy way to cruise Honolulu but wouldn’t take them farther out. You can rent a 50cc moped without a motorcycle license. It can be cost effective for a couple and parking is easier.
Are travelers able to pack rented surfboards on the buses? Is there space or storage for that sort of thing?
Boogie boards=Yes... Surfboards=No
I was wondering where Hilo Hattie was hiding 🥰🥰🥰
She’s around! She has a busy schedule
@@TheHawaiiVacationGuide I have no doubt 🥰🥰🥰
can you guys do an airbnb vs hotel price video. i find airbnb to be cheaper and directly supports the people of the island. thoughts?
How about with 2 kids? We are coming with 2 kids, whats your recommendation?
Thank you for this Channel, I love the information you guy's give about hawaii I can dream of living In paradise, Me & my wife will be Honeymooning in Oahu, would you be willing to make a video on romantic thing's to do as a couple on Oahu?
Thanks for watching and the comment! We just published a video on romantic ideas for Maui, all apply to Oahu too. We have a list of recommended activities here, like sunset sails: thehawaiivacationguide.com/hawaii-recommendations/hawaii-best-tours-and-activities/oahu-tours-and-activities/
Please explain Waikiki Trolley
You buy a ticket for a route to different parts of the island. It is a hop on/hop off service. waikikitrolley.com/
I be n Hawaii this Sept I be staying n Oahu Waikiki I wana do the Lava boat tour on the BIG Hawaii island do thy have Daily Flights going bk & forth on those islands ????
The lava isn't flowing into the ocean right now but the volcano is erupting, you can do a one day guided tour from Oahu to the Big Island here: www.hawaiitours.com/oahu/one-day-island-trips/?ref=Jordan (we earn a small commission with this link at no cost to you!)
Or see our article on island hopping here: thehawaiivacationguide.com/hawaii-island-hopping/

Big big thank You 👏👏👏👏👏
I don't have a driver's license, so no rental car no car period! I'll take the bus, or get an uber/lyft or trolley All good
All good indeed. You have lots of options for wheels
For those that've rented a car and travel with toddlers .. how do you do it? do you take your own car seat/booster or do they provide one?
we take car seats with us, we have a light travel seat that we share here: thehawaiivacationguide.com/hawaii-travel-gear/
We have a strap for our 5 year old that we will share too. It is hard to lug them to baggage drop-off but they are free to check. You can rent them at the car rental but they are expensive.
I wonder if renting a car from Turo is cheapest?
That’s a popular option. Last summer Turo was a good option but not cheaper. But a good way to support local businesses and I bet one can find a good price.
I'll have to respectfully disagree thinking Diamond Head is overrated. At least for that price that was too quick of a hike. The view wasn't bad but to me that's a one-time thing I would not revisit it. Because my group had to go pass, we at least got our money's worth but I would not pay the normal fee just a hike up Diamond Head.
Fair, thanks for sharing!
What about from the port on a cruise ship?
You can pickup Uber or a taxi from the ports.
Can you take the public bus from the airport for less than 50 round trip?
Yes, I think bus fare is around $2 or $3. it just went up in 2022.
I would say, half the week rent a car with the other having no car. 6-700$ is way to much to not have the ease of a car.
It’s a good option. Rent when you need it so it doesn’t sit in the parking garage collecting fees.
Hi, does Uber or Lyft in Honolulu take a kid, 4 yr old, off course with parents, without car seat? What is the law there? Or should I bring car seat there?
This is a great video!!
gotta bring a car seat or rent one as car seats are required as on the mainland.
Can I rent small tents to sleep in ???
Cute
What time of the year has least traffic/ tourist
Shoulder seasons are the fall and spring.
I'm only going for three days and just want to go to the Dole Plantation. Is there like a bus to take over there or do I just stick to uber/lyft or taxi?? What is cheapest and how long will it take me from Waikiki zoo to get to Dole plantation? ;_; Thank you!
I believe The Bus will take you up there but may require a transfer or two. See The Bus schedule for more info.
How to get from the airport to waikiki?????
We mention in the video and itinerary, Roberts Hawaii, Uber, Lyft, Taxi, etc
ride the bus or Uber it
you did not say how you got to these places and how easy lol
No way for a short vacation you need a car in Oahu
You can rent a car for 40 a day.
There are some good deals now but prices change. It was $200 or more last summer
FIRST rent a car ✅
🤙🏼🤙🏼🤙🏼🤙🏼💕💕💕🤙🏼🤙🏼🤙🏼🤙🏼
thanks!
For some reason a video about not needing a rental wastes half the video talking about rental cars
thanks for watching! A lot of folks are debating getting a car or not so it doesn't hurt to share the knowledge.
If you go to Hawaii be prepared to spend money 🤷♀️🤷♀️
Roys is horrible.
