- Jaran 'Julio' Green's homegoing in the Treme neighborhood of New Orleans, La. He was 23 years old, father of a new born baby girl, killed on March 26, 2009. Loved ones danced on his casket, carried him thru his old neighborhood one last time.

At the risk of sounding patronizing, as a White Man and New Orleanian, I greatly respect the Black perspective and worldview on death. I only wish more folks, all over the world, would explore this perspective on how to celebrate the passing of another human being.

In New Orleans, we always pick an accent color for funerals. My grandmother's is this weekend and it's pink. Often times it's a pastel color to bring life into the celebration. We try not to overwhelm the service with ALL black. That makes it a mournful gathering... we would rather celebrate the life of the loved one we lost!

As you will get older. I want you to remember this statement. "Your favorite bar." I used to love the clubs. But as a 40 year old. That ship has sailed. Now it's my favorite holiday with family.

Can you imagine the therapy in this, the joy, sadness, happiness, all those emotions. Africans dance at funerals, not sure which country, but I've heard of it. Celebrate life. Why sit and mope. Celebrate their life. Wow!! That's pure love.
Way to go those left behind should not grieve but enjoy the ceremony. My time will come and this is to me

You right about that! Julio was my boyfriend's best friend (dark skinned brother on bass drum), they grew up together. My bf cried like a baby when Julio was murdered but on that day we laid him to rest, the jazz funeral for him was the most joyful, celebratory, powerfully spiritual event I've ever experienced. He's moved on to a place of peace, love and safety. And I'm sure Julio's spirit was so happy how we turned up for him, showed him how much love he had in the community.
BigRedCotton I am sorry to hear that. I believe that New Orleans shows the world the epitome of a homegoing. Family and friends with a peaceful mental transition of our loved on leaving us physically. They will never leave us mentally though but 2nd lines like this settles our soul.

Trombone Shorty's mom Lois started the tradition when her son DMan died back in the 90's. she danced on his casket. Its to celebrate your loved one's homegoing. Far as I know, its only done in the Treme

Ha, they indeed dance on the coffin they do! These folks seem so disciplined and dedicated with what they do, especially the musicians even just improvising all the way. This must the perfect funeral. Much respect and admiration for this very particular culture!
good observation! Those musicians are just a hook up band, meaning they don't play together regularly. But the musicianship in this culture is so strong and the neighborhood relationships and bonds are so tight, they move like one like-minded unit. I love being able to film them regularly. its a real honor
This seems a really proud and solemn tradition to give the spectacular last honours to the deceised one. It must have been a rare priviledge to participate, so thank you for sharing with others!

it was the most meaningful, emotional and beautiful tributes I've ever witnessed. Unfortunately one of the pall bearers, Kyron, was just murdered two weeks ago. The neighborhood, his huge family and tons of friends have been mounting nightly tributes to him and this coming Saturday is his funeral where they'll be doing the same tribute for him. RIP Kyron
Hey Brenton - Tater told me. I'm so upset I won't be able to make it. I've got a job training in Miami Saturday. But I'm coming out tomorrow night and probably Thursday night too to film the second line, interview family and friends. I want to publish a tribute to Kharen. I know how loved he was. I used to live over on Ursulines, used to see him and Julio all the time. They helped me move furniture once, wouldn't take money from me for helping. Big Red Cotton Passed away from injuries sustained in the Mother's Day Second line shooting several years ago. Her story is worth researching. As you can tell by her incredible videos she was an astute chronicler of the the New Orleans Second Line Street scene. She is greatly missed by all who knew her.

@@elexis3728 I heard that she actually visited the person who shot her while he was in prison and forgave him. That's a lot more than I could do if I was ever shot. Big Red is the unofficial patron saint of New Orleans second lines. Every time I see a Second Line, I think of how she brought it to the world. Check out more of her videos.
@@1blastman wow she sounds like an amazing person. I originally saw this particular video years ago and it stuck with me. It still makes me tear up, smile and makes me want to ask 100 questions. Like what was this young man’s family doing during all this, where was his mom? I don’t know why I keep wondering about that but I do. The first time I watched it and left a comment someone actually replied back to me and told me that several of the other guys we see in this video had since been killed also. I wanna say it was her. I asked if the girl who we see dancing on the casket with all the guys was his girlfriend or sister and was told something like she grew up with all those guys and hung out with them every day. She was the only girl so I was curious what her relationship was to him. She was right up in the mix with them and they were looking out for her. I live on the Northshore. On the other side of Covington. Last night I went through her channel and watched a lot of her other videos. I know she is missed.

I'm sorry to tell you that the author of this video can't respond to your question as she's one of the victims of the secondline shooting on Mother's day. We as well as all New Orleanians and otherwise wish her a speedy recovery, I lost my 2 year old great-grandson (Jeremy Galmon) some years ago to a shooting near a secondline uptown N.O. (see Jeremy Galmon video).

You’re right Patricia, HE WAS SO WELL LOVED!! He lived on the corner of my block with his grandmother who makes the best gumbo in the whole Treme neighborhood! Everyone goes by her house on Christmas to get a bowl. He’d just had a baby girl not even a month before he was murdered, was trying to get his life together to be a family man for his gfriend and daughter. He was early 20s, life ahead of him. I saw him just 20 minutes before he was gunned down. He opened the door for me as I walked in, hugged me and flashed a smile no one hardly ever saw him with (he was a hot tempered dude, usually scowling). A few minutes later he was gone. Just like that. Its a scar many of us are still sore from.
the energy during his parade was ELECTRIFYING!! Ppl just chanting his name, it was so powerful! You could just feel the life and love roaring thru us to him and him back to us. It was pretty otherworldly. Never felt anything like it before or since.
BigRedCotton I'm really not trying to be nosey but I kept getting the feeling that the girl who was dancing on top of his coffin in the gray was his gf. Is she? I don't know anyone in this video, I just stumbled across it but I felt like she was really dancing her sadness out. It was so much more than just dancing and the men were giving her her space to do her thing. I'm from Louisiana too.
hey Jill Jill. No that's his cousin. Forget her name but she's extremely active in the cultural community, her family is huge and she's always around her male cousins. She's like a tag-along little sister from what I've seen of her and them. They all live on the corner in Treme, their houses sit across from each other. The family has just recently gone thru another tragic murder. The light skinned pall bearer, handsome, second from the front with shades on at the 1:33 minute mark, was just murdered a couple of months ago. Ambushed him in the house, shot him and stole his car. Not sure if anyone has been arrested yet for it. The family was understandably devastated:(

I love this but my family would not do this. Our funerals are inside of a funeral home where everyone is mainly in their own space and crying. A little mingling but nothing serious and you can always feel the sadness in the building. This is just great.
@adamlivs thanks for your message. Julio lived on my block, was a character, left us too soon. You posting this is making me think of him. We had a nice exchange about 20 minutes before he was gunned down, a different kinda moment than the others. I hope his soul is resting peacefully

what a way to go....this ought to feel good for anybody who is going to the other side...also the relatives that must keep on going, will feel happy to have shared time with the departed...as opposed to the funerals where one feels so sad and even empty...i hope this kind of funeral never stops ...this is like music ...jazz..blues...it is a cultural event..very unique to the south..i don't think we have anything like this in California...maybe in south central Los Angeles...

thanks for posting this video ...for some of us this is one of the rare opportunities to view such a funeral....i hope they never stop having funerals like this, as other people have said it before, a funeral should be a celebration of the life of the person that is departing....

Legend has it that in 1862 the Indian tribes would dance on the graves of their deceased loved one in hopes of the spirit returning back home with them providing comfort & peace to the family making the grieving process much easier, Those people were called “Grave Dancers”. Later on as years went by a lot of people who started to do experienced paranormal activities which were “Good & bad”. A lot of times some folks would wake up with unexplained bruises or dreams they couldn’t fathom at that moment with their deceased loved ones appearing in dreams without speaking a word/Just cold blank stares. The tradition was made popular in New Orleans when a voodoo priest babaloo decided to use that same ceremony to not only welcome the spirit back into the realm of the living but to also use the spirit to exact revenge on those who have caused the family harm. Many of the people who started to participate in these ceremonies became members of the occult manipulating other spirits who were not of “kin” to them but of their enemies causing havoc in many households...,when it started to become a trend it made the black magic market sky rocket due to everyone running to get hexes and other bad juju casted on those who did them ANY harm & I believe that’s when things started to take a turn for the worse bc Magic & power were no longer used for the celebration or Good of the deceased, it was used as protection for some of the living bestowing death upon others”

I think that was Julio's favorite color. at many of the Black funerals in New orleans, especially for the younger people, the friends and family of the deceased will wear the same color and/or a tshirt with their picture as a way of honoring them
This is special in so many ways.. To have people who love you so much, that they're dancing on your casket... and the BAND, music was awesome... This was really nice...chokes you up a bit. And I don't even know anything about the person who died. This is how everyone should be sent off :)
