Thanks for this review! I was looking to see this from an artist’s perspective since it was on sale on Amazon and Blick. I’m definitely buying this for my urban sketching.

Same. Looks like they heeded her advice. The white is still there, but the other colors she suggested are in place. Also, Emily, there's a ring on the bottom of the box so that you can slip it over your thumb and "wear" it securely on the hand that holds your journal. That way, you don't have to prop it in your lap.

There are two versions of this field box. The one that sells for around $25 has the Cotman colors. The one that sells for around $70 has the professional colors.

I would recommend the student version. The differences are not very noticeable, except for the opacity of the colors.
If your buying the 70 buck one then only buy it if your a professional artist or is going to use it fully

I just got this set and I think they must have listened to your advice as they changed the colors. For my yellows, i got lemon yellow and cadmium yellow hue, and for my blues I got ultramarine and cerulean blue hue. They added the paynes grey but still kept the white. I would rather have pink instead of white. I love all of the other colors though, and I do have a tube of permanent rose so I think I will switch the white out for that one.

As of May 2024, they've significantly adjusted the colours available. It seems they've taken your suggestions. Currently they have:
Lemon Yellow, Cadmium Yellow, Cadmium Red, Alizarin Crimson, Doxazine purple, Ultramarine blue, Cerulean Blue, Sap Green, Burnt Sienna, Burnt Umber, Payne's Gray and chinese white
There are a couple of colours I'd still change but better.

I've tried these too, the saturation isn't so good but if cost is a concern, I think investing in good 100% cotton paper is the first point and then if Cotman is all that's affordable afterwards, then the colors have a chance to look beautiful anyway.

    Hi Emily,
Thanks for the nice review..I was debating and your video closed the deal. Especially the attached water cup. I have seen few people on Instagram remove the water container and brush and put in another 15 half pans. One even removed the center clip and fit 15 pans instead of 12, making it a total of 28 - 30 pans..
Yes please, I would love to see that box in action...
Thanks again for this video.. 🙏🏼

Anyone watching this, do not buy it at Michaels. It's totally not worth $60 after the 20% off coupon. Amazon has it for $20-$25, and that's about what it is worth, considering I had to switch out a couple of paints to make it a usable, set. I swapped out the white for quin rose, switched out the "cobalt" (p29+white) for pthalo blue.

@@EmilyOlsonArt I swapped out the alizirin crimson for something else, too, but can't remember what. I actually bought a Koi field box as a travel set for my Xmas travel, but I like the Cotman field box much better. Koi seems "grainy" to me. but not granulating if that makes sense. As soon as I use up most of the Cotman colors I'm going to replace them with QoR, I think. It's a nice little box! I fill an empty water enhancer bottle (like Mio, or any other brand) with water and use that to top off the water cup for that set. Works great!

That was the oddest product review. "I'm going to review this product, while using all of my other stuff that isn't the actual product, but does the same thing". Next, review a stool. But have a dining chair there, too. Tell us how great the dining chair is.

  • @evelynl.4554

I’m going to be honest…$60 is way to much to pay for this set of colors….especially when you can get 8ml for $3.29 each and 21ml for $6.35. Tubes are much more economical, and they rewet beautifully. And this set is 1/3 the price on Amazon.
Most people buy cotman because they are beginner not wanting to splurge, or can’t afford professional yet….so PLEASE send your viewers to price friendly sites or give them price friendly tips!
