William is obviously still young and has a long way to go. The choice of this masterpiece, which has baffled and eluded many excellent pianists, was unfortunate. He is not ready for all its elusive secrets. He was best at the polonaise moments with crisp rhythms ringing out clearly, but there was a lack of fantasy overall. He was playing the notes without bringing out the constantly changing vistas in this fantastic piece. He would have done much better with any of the other Chopin polonaises. To be fair, even good performances, let alone excellent, of the Polonaise-Fantasie are rare, and the only one that bowled me over was from Horowitz.

All of the finalists were required to play this piece. He played other works brilliantly throughout the competition (and this performance was very good as well!!)
